    Shrimp paste is used in the Burmese cuisine too.. very similar to balacan , just a bit softer and saltier. Thanks for letting others know how delicious it is!

    So does this paste taste of shrimp or is it just an umami flavor? I'm not a fan of fishy things or any meat from water but i do use anchovies in dressing & things.

    No need to keep your Belacan in the fridge. Keep it in a glass jar, it will last forever and won't be hard when you need to use it.

    Is there a wrong way to have saute green beans? I don't think so. God bless you Flo.

    Cook them outside. My family eats a lot of cabbage and saurkraut. We cook it out side so the smell won't linger in the house.

    Yum love shrimp paste , I used the Chinese one in the jar it’s also pretty smelly 😅l wanted to see if I could find the one you’re using. The more pungent the better 😋 my husband is going to love this 😅😅😅😅hehe

      If you want it more pungent, get the Indonesian 'Terasi'! I use that instead of Belacan though I have both in my kitchen.

    The place I grew up produced the same kind of shrimp paste from Malaysia. A family friend gave me two whole big blocks and kept them in the freezer since 2017.

    I never knew we're suppose to boil the green beans before stir frying. Thank you for showing us. Brings back memories of dishes my mom use eat and cook. She use to stir fry beans with a block of fermented bean curd from those jars. She also use to buy liquid shrimp paste in a jar from the store/Asian market to stir fry squid. We definitely have to turn the overhead fan/vent on high and open the windows because the whole house would smell...even the neighbors could smell it..lol. My favorite dish with shrimp paste dish is Ong Choy (aka water spinach).

    Can you substitute fish sauce for the belacan?

    • @ricklee5845
      @ricklee5845 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Of course you can but it won't be the same. Fish sauce is very salty and tastes a little of fish. Belacan tastes predominantly of shrimp - that's what we want, that's what it is all about.

      I only know of the jars of similar shrimp paste. As far as I know, there is nothing else that will taste like it.

      "Terasai" from Indonesia - even better! Thailand has something called "Kapi" which I have seen used a lot among the Hmong though I haven't used it yet. The smallest amount I have seen comes in 200g containers.

  • @ijsbrandvreugdenhil4652

    You forgot the coconut milk and please next time use Ketjap Manis instead of light soya sauce. Belacan is called Trassie Udang in Indonesia., fermented shrimp. You can also buy this as a powder, which is easyer to administer. By the way it is an Indonesian dish and not Malaysian. The Dutch introduced the green beans in Indonesia and they call it SAMBAL GORENG BUNCIS (The Dutch word is BOONTJES)
