Interesting way to prepare vegetables. Nyonya cuisine feels somewhat underrated in europe, and certainly deserves a spot on the list over best cuisines.
Anytime Anthony! Glad to share my passion for food with another person ;) Meals which are time consuming are the most delicious. No pain no gain. Hehe! Happy Chinese New Year to you too! God Bless.
Not many people know about the nyonya cuisine actually. This dish is however, not really a nyonya speciality but more known to be a malay speciality. Of course, you can also find this dish in most chinese restaurants too. Ah, the beauty of many cultures at one place :)
Made this exactly as you mentioned but with 500g of kangkung instead of French beans. Came out wonderfully. I had to take out a handful of kangkung as I could not toss the vegetable. I should have just left it in the pan to wilt before tossing it. There’s always a next time to get it right as this recipe is a keeper. Thanks for the simple explanation. 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
I was refering to the chinese restaurants in Malaysia. Most asian restaurants in Europe are almost hopeless. Haha! Else I would not make much effort to cook, just like what you've mentioned. Happy cooking MrQuagmire!!
I see ... thank you kindly for the reply. I will work at learning more Nonya cooking from yr channel as i miss it when mom and auntie used to do all these delicious but time consuming meals...haha Happy Chinese New Year....God Bless
Thank you for trying the recipe. Totally made my day to know that you and your company love the recipe ;) With support from others like your kindself, I am not more motivated to make videos..haha
Haha...if I do, I will be so tempted to eat the whole bowl in front of the video :P But I will try to do that in the next video. Thanks for dropping by Jill!!! Have a great week ahead!
It is important to fry the prawn mixture first until fragrant or "pecah minyak" as the malay says it. If I add the balacan powder together, I find that the belacan taste tend to sink in. Hence, the taste of the belacan is just not there.
Horray to us! :) Glad you tried it. I can relate to what you say since I have an office job myself too. And after work, I have to cook for dinner. Hence, quick recipes are really needed!
I'm curious about the stainless steel pan you used in this video. May I know what brand it is and whether you 'season' your stainless steel pan so that it doesnt stick easily. Thanks in advance and I enjoy your cooking recipes.
Why do you add the belacan powder after frying the mixture and not add it together with the prawn mixture earlier ? Is there a significant difference if i mix it first then fry ? Thanks...
It depend on what you mean by chinese. Here most chinese restaurants are operated by Vietnamese immigrant who rely on serving 80s style "chop suey", rather than delicious homemade vietnamese cuisine. The few authentic ones we do have serve mostly cantonese specialties. Which leaves us with only one option. Take things in our own hands. well a little fusion here and there catch the best from each part of asia still don't hurt:) The Kristang cuisine is also largely missed (portugues style).
I can;t find the balachan powder..I went ntuc, provision shop and giant hypermart..can't find it so I bought the balachan paste instead..so how much of the paste should I use?
I guess you can :D If you enjoy those veggies. If you have more questions, post them on the recipe page. Our cooks will help you out. www.nyonyacooking.com/recipes/french-beans-belacan~S1JCDDsDG9b7 - Admin
