I still think a beginner is going to benefit a lot from this, start with his other stick control videos etc to get up to speed for this one. The best is feeling that accomplishment of thinking you can never get there and one day you all of a sudden reach the next level of accomplishment. it's the fun of that journey thsts important.

The Doctor did it again!! I’ve been playing since sixth grade and learned to play on a “Drum Set”, “Drum Kit” playing these beats on my own. It is always refreshing to go back to basics and find those areas where you can pick out certain basic beats and build them into something beautiful just by listening to the basic structure or it’s foundation as the Great Doctor Brown has described here. Outstanding! Much appreciate this basic session to always go back to basics and check yourself. Love It!!
Thanks so much Rob... I used to play and now I got back into it and realized after watching your video that I was clueless for the basics but now with your tutorial I'm starting to get it a bit... Can't wait to watch the rest of your amazing videos... Thank you Rob
My guy!! This is absolutely amazing.. I am recovering from Aortic dissection OHS.. bought an Ludwig Evo kit from a dude, 6mos. old, and heads had never been tightened.. for $300 bucks!!! Nice Zildjian symbols and all.. I woke up from the coma feeling like a teenager again, I dabbled a little on a cb5000 kit as a teen.. I was looking around for a good tutorial on how to play for beginners. You, by far have the easiest to follow and clear informative instructional videos I have found. You get this, a lot, but thank you Man! I hit some dark patches trying to recover from my surgery.. trying to heal your breast plate back together isn't an easy task.. and that's just the bone. I had a nice kit thrown at me by the cosmos, I found you.. now I'm just happy healing brother, and jamming my ass off!!! It's good to be alive!!!!!!!!! Wish you all the best and wish you could all feel like I do right now! 🥁
Really easy to follow and fun to play along with. I like how it allots a decent amount of time to ingest the beat and ample opportunity to pick up the kick pattern before adding in the snare. Perfect for us beginners. Thank you!
Totally new drummer and totally new subscriber. thanks for making my first week of drumming much more fun with these beats to learn and practice. i love how you dont feel the need to show off your skills and you stick to helping us beginners out. So far love the channel thank you for teaching us how to drum better. Drums are so much fun
His dynamics are so good on the hi hats that he can make even the simplest beats sound groovy by adding subtle ghost notes or accents. That’s why it’s important to play with your wrist and not chop or hack at the hats with your elbow or shoulder. Use the push/pull technique: lightly “push” the stick across the top of the hats to get a lighter ghost note, and “pull” the stick down across the hats to get a little more oomph and accent the note.
I was a a remixer from 97-08 with X-mix remix and compilation. My forte was programming drum and bass. I never played the drums though. My boys asked for a kit for Christmas, they got it and I use it more than they do. I'm way better than they expected. Surprised myself too. I really like the way you lay out your tutorials. Pretty much the only one a can relate to on TH-cam. Thanks a ton!
Hi Rob, I always took to the drums. Had a set since 2009 in the box. Just now set it up at 60 years old. Now I can finaly take your beginners lessons. I'm loving it. Thanks so much for taking time for us begginers.
Drumming journey. Day 1. Made it to the second beat (no, it's not pretty, but it's there!) then I just jammed with that for a while and had an awesome time! I think you and me are gonna get along just fine Mr. Brown 😎 Thank you for doing this.
I’m a two-year-old drummer. I’ve had my drum set for about a year now, but I’ve only recently started taking drumming seriously. I found this video a few weeks back and it’s helped me more than any other drumming video I could find. Thank you for this tutorial, Rob!
Ya, excellent! There are some really good drum teaching channels, but this is really one of the best. Rob is one of the best, if not the best. The coolest for sure.
Hey Rob. Thank you for making these videos. Even though I consider myself an intermediate level drummer. I still remember watching your videos when I was a total newbie and I must say I learned a lot from you. Thanks again bro. Keep up all the good work.!
4 years after posting this lesson it’s clearly the gift that keeps on giving 🤓 Just found you, 1 month in with drumming and look forward to learning these and exploring the channel 🙏 Subbed 😎
42 never played an instrument my entire life. Dad of 3 boys all play instruments. I'm following my dream. Your videos have me playing 8th note beats within couple hours. Much appteciated! You're my top content provider for the presumably future
I played as a teen but never really got into it, chasing girls too much. I’m 52 now and got a professional kit and it’s all coming back to me but need a little instruction. I am better now but this dude is gold!!! Soak it up. I like how he doesn’t screw around and likes to hear himself talk like most people on the tube. Excellent teacher/instructor!!!! Thanks
Beatdown, I've been doing all your stick exercises for months and finally got a little electronic kit. Playing along with this video was my first attempt at playing on a kit rather than a practice pad. And thanks to your super clear instructions, I rocked it!! Thank you for your amazing teaching.
Same here, I've scrolled through hundreds of videos on TH-cam and Rob's is the easiest and simplistic by far. Also with the written commentary at the bottom of the video allows me to write this down on drum sheets so I can practice without watching the videos. 👏
I’ve been playing for years, but haven’t for the last 23 yrs. I never had a drum lesson, so counting out time has been very difficult for me. Before if I heard a beat, I just played it. Now I’m starting all over with counting out the time. Thank you for really breaking this down for me. I’m learning! Who said a 66 yr. old woman couldn’t learn this!
I'm 44 year old beginner and this video has me down practicing any chance I can! I have the first 3 mastered...long way to go though!! Thank you for putting this together! 🤘🤘🙏🙏
I just ran across your video, and I have to say that you are awesome Bro! the way you give details is on point, thanks, I can't wait to see your next video.
Another great lessons! If we were paying attention we noticed that the kick drum leads the measure, and that the one beat (or the and of the one beat) is giving the band its anchor or foundation (THEY are counting on YOU). Beats 5 through 10 are money in the bank. Can't say enough good things about your teaching style! Love it! How about a blues (12 bar) lesson? And thanks for showing the benefit of playing with a metronome, very important for beginners and no embarrassment for pros.
I've been playing for 7 years and I somehow clicked on this video because I expected to learn something. Fortunately I already knew all of it but it just explains how informative your videos are.
Thank you for posting your videos. I had my ideal pearl drum kit as a kid. I wanted to play so bad, but life happened, and I never learned to play. Drums have always been a passion in my life, and I have always regretted not learning to play. Now I'm 45 years old with a bucket list and an awesome used Yamaha kit and a dream. I found your videos you made it so easy to understand, so i was able to have productive practice. You taught me how to play and understand so many things it all just came together for me beautifully. I have a few songs I play well, and I feel comfortable and confident behind my kit. I have a long way to go, but I have come a long way in a short period of time. Thank you, Keep doing what you're doing!
Because of this video. My 8 month old daughter loves drumming with her hands on any surface she can get them on. She can hold a solid beat. I need to figure out where to go from here to get her prepared for the real deal, sticks and all :) --- In the mean time, we listen to your beats straight through multiple times a day while she sits and watches intently in her jumper, keeping a beat along with the video. Our Grandfather was a Drum Major in the military and was very active as a stand-in with many many famouse 60's drummers. We have music flowing in our families blood and I think I have the next gen drummer on my hands. Mr. Rob, do you have any recommendations on how to help develop this talent at 8 months old? (Liked, subbed and alerts on btw)
So glad I found your channel, Rob. You teach and keep it moving without being drawn out or using fake enthusiasm. Just real. Thanks. I bought a used kit about 15 years ago, and only tooled around on it here and there. I'm 45 now and have a renewed interest in learning the drumming fundamentals and beyond. I'm looking forward to the journey. I'll be looking to your channel for guidance. Thanks again.
Noticed my almost 3 year old will listen to music with me and she does her arms like she is playing the drums or when she watching a video. So figure get her some sticks and a practice pad and let her go at it. Any advice on good age to start letting her try to learn. Noticed she learns quick and always remember stuff easy. Might sound stupid me asking for info
It depends on the discipline level of the child. If she is showing interest at this young of an age, there’s no harm in letting her start playing and experimenting. As a parent of a similar aged daughter, she might have short moments where she is open to being taught, but ultimately might not take instruction from someone until at least grade school age.
Hey Rob, could you please make a part two for this? More advanced beats? 16ths? Anything you think we need to know? This is a great warm up video. Thank you. -CD
You mean count in 16ths? 1 e and uh 2 e and uh.... Depends on time signature and tempo. Assuming you're doing 4/4, which you are if you're new If it were 12/8, that would be wrong. 12/8 counts 1 and uh, 2 and uh. 3 and uh, 4 and uh.... Look up Stepping Out by Joe Jackson. Try to count in 16ths. Good luck. Lol. Its REALLY fast. So is bodysnatchers by radio head or Rio by Duran Duran. At that point. You'll either count eighths (1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &) or quarters (1 2 3 4). The 16ths will still be there as you'll need them for two handed high hats. You'll be counting 1 e and uh 2 e...alternating both hands on HH. The trick is to ALWAYS go to the snare and hit it on the way back from a fill. Otherwise it don't work. Lol
@@windsofmarchjourneyperrytr2823 Hi friend, many thanks for your detailed reply. I am indeed a beginner. I'm experimenting to see how far I can get by teaching myself before I need a (live) drum teacher. I find I need to count, especially with drum fills, so I know where the 1 is. Thanks again for your advice! Geoff in the UK
Hi Rob, I notice a lot of drummers move their legs (both kick and hat legs) when they aren't playing actual notes or working the hi-hat/kick. Is this a time-keeping technique that I should start using? I notice a lot of drummers also ghosting 8th notes on the snare as well (most likely as a time-keeping measure, because it is often too quiet to add much texture to the groove). I've never been able to do that on the snare quietly enough to keeping it from changing the texture of the groove. I think that too early on in my playing as a drummer I tried to play on the back-beat and never really got a consistent feel for 4-on-the-floor style playing. For instance, I rarely ever click the hi hat on all of the quarter notes when I'm playing, unless I feel like the song specifically calls for it or I'm trying to play something jazzier. Is this is a bad habit that I should start addressing. Maybe ai should also add: while I did receive some drum lessons initially, most of my practice consists of playing along to recorded music through headphones and with a couple bands I play in at actual rehearsals. I am trying to change that and get back to fundamentals, but it is hard to find the time on top of learning new songs to perform in 2 groups and working 50 hr weeks in an already very physical job. Thanks Rob, your channel is an incredible resource to drummers; your production value and insights into drumming are top-notch!
I notice you letting the stick rest on the snare after each beat. That's what I do naturally, but thought it was considered a Bad Thing. What's your opinion on that, Rob? Thanks, Rob.

Bad habits are hard to kick (no pun intended) but these gave me new goals to get my playing level up..I have been doing all your exercises and hand work and it's really improved my playing and feel quite a bit,.breaking it down like you do in such great consise ways is really great and super helpfull, you are my favourite TH-cam teacher and greatly appreciated..now I got a get a shirt but I'm afraid I'm not ready for prime time just yet.
I am just starting
@@arthurbowman6195 I wish you the best of luck, this series of videos Rob puts out I think are some of the best simple and easy to follow. of course he makes it look easy cause he's great at it..but his ideas are so spot on as to how to get to where you want to go. I still think a beginner is going to benefit a lot from this, start with his other stick control videos etc to get up to speed for this one. Every great artist can tell you stories of starting out stumbling around like a toddler. The best is feeling that accomplishment of thinking you can never get there and one day you all of a sudden reach the next level of accomplishment. it's the fun of that journey thsts important.
@@chuckthebull I've seen a million kids at the store who go crazy on double bass but can't do any of this, particularly not in time...
@@windsofmarchjourneyperrytr2823 thanks dude...appreciate the encouragement. I work for a famous drummer as a roadie for awhile,,drumming is HARD to do well,, it really is an art like none other and a lot more to it then people think.. they think whats so hard you just hit shit with sticks.. but man without a good drummer there is no band (in the rock and rolish sense) I really have such a enhanced respect for them than ever,, even if they do drink all your beer and steal your girlfriend.
New drummer here. Perfect video for me. The graphics showing timing especially of the bass drum in blue really helped me. Thanks!
Really easy to follow and fun to play along with. I like how it allots a decent amount of time to ingest the beat and ample opportunity to pick up the kick pattern before adding in the snare. Perfect for us beginners. Thank you!
Great job with this video. I am a new drummer, but an old bassist. Played bass for 35 years and got a wild hair to start playing drums.
I taught my 4 year old from this. He is now 5 and plays nicely...thanks

I agree!
Thanks Rob! I had to stop at #7 and work it for an hour or so...finally tuned in to it! I will groove responsibly.
4 days since i found your channel and i am loving your teaching and your flow. Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge.
41 years playing, teaching. You have excellent timing. Timing is the key to playing. Simple or complex. They both sound good!!
Hey man. awesome vid. Straight to the point. 10 beats, no chattin. Just showing us how it’s done. Nice work!
Hi Rob, I always took to the drums. Had a set since 2009 in the box. Just now set it up at 60 years old. Now I can finaly take your beginners lessons. I'm loving it. Thanks so much for taking time for us begginers.
Just started teaching myself drums on a little electric drum set in my little studio. I’m so happy I came across this resource, thank you!
Congratulations Rob! A million views is quite an accomplishment. You are an incredible teacher. Keep up the GREAT work!!
Thanks a bunch for the encouragement! 👊🏽🙂
Drumming journey. Day 1.
Made it to the second beat (no, it's not pretty, but it's there!) then I just jammed with that for a while and had an awesome time!
I think you and me are gonna get along just fine Mr. Brown 😎
Thank you for doing this.
I'm a beginner and this was sooooo helpful. Thanks!
Its always good to go back to the basics. Thanks Rob!
It's great to give beginners things that can easily play right off the bat so they don't get discouraged. Great Lesson!
Just ordered my drum kit and I’m going to put them to good use practicing these beats that do fit into a lot of rock songs.
I’m a two-year-old drummer. I’ve had my drum set for about a year now, but I’ve only recently started taking drumming seriously. I found this video a few weeks back and it’s helped me more than any other drumming video I could find. Thank you for this tutorial, Rob!
Hi Rob! Any tips on separating your Hi-Hat hand from Kick foot? My natural inclination is to always hit the Hi-Hat when I'm kicking.
4 years after posting this lesson it’s clearly the gift that keeps on giving 🤓
Just found you, 1 month in with drumming and look forward to learning these and exploring the channel 🙏
Subbed 😎
You’re teaching method is the best. Thank you.
42 never played an instrument my entire life. Dad of 3 boys all play instruments. I'm following my dream. Your videos have me playing 8th note beats within couple hours. Much appteciated! You're my top content provider for the presumably future
Super. Playing guitar in bands for 30 years, just got a kit, this will keep me busy for a few months. :)
Me too
I played as a teen but never really got into it, chasing girls too much.

Love it when the snare drops in 🙏👍👍

Finally, new beats for us beginners, ROCK ON Rob!!! 🤘😝🤘
This is the real right here. Basic drum techniques for beginners. If you want to learn please practice these. Great teaching my brother....👍👍👍
I'm 64 yo and 3 months into lessons. This was very well explained, now I just need to figure out how to do it.
Love being able to jump right into it and practice!
Im just just a beginner.
Thanks so much for this vodeo.
same lol
From Elementary thru High School drumming! Thanks for making me to pick the hobby up again now! Thanks for all the sore muscles and good techniques!
I love your positivity and the fact that you can make the most cents.
I'm 37yrs old, single mother of 1, and just discovered my new hobbie, absolutely loving your channel, thank you thank you!
😍
Thank you. -CD
Love your lessons Rob. Q: do you recommend that beginners ‘count’ in their heads? 1,a,and,a, 2,a,and,a.....
Thanks
You mean count in 16ths?
1 e and uh 2 e and uh....
Depends on time signature and tempo. Assuming you're doing 4/4, which you are if you're new
If it were 12/8, that would be wrong.
Love the channel! Simple and straightforward advice and tips. You don’t mess around with unnecessary stuff.
The side snare threw me for a loop for a couple of seconds. I was thinking "Is that literally a free floating snare!?!" :)
Thank you, I mastered the first 7 perfectly but struggled with the last ones so I’m going to come back every day till I can do them!
True, it is to keep that "pulse" going. You need it to be internal, but some physically do this as well.
I'm 527 years old, just bought my second drum kit (didnt like the first) this video has changed my life fr ❤
527 years old and you’re only on your second kit?! 🫤
Rob you are an invaluable drum teacher! This is fantastic for us beginners! Thank you
I notice you letting the stick rest on the snare after each beat. That's what I do naturally, but thought it was considered a Bad Thing.
What's your opinion on that, Rob? Thanks, Rob.
Yea same here. I thought I was doing the wrong thing but have noticed that it is common by people that know what they are doing.
I’ve found that being able to do both is beneficial... especially as the grooves get funnier and you wanna play with different snare textures.
Thanks!
Who else is doing this on electronic drums?
