    I started drum lessons at 15. Now 58 years old and still playing. I had an incredibly talented and technically proficient drummer as my first teacher, and he was a hell of a nice person. He was also the worst drum teacher Ive ever come across! I wish he'd been as relaxed and inspiring as you are. My wish is that every drummer, regardless of age or ability, finds their way to your pages. You represent the very best attributes of your craft. My thanks for sharing your knowledge, enthusiasm and wisdom with us all.

    Not only for guys :-) I'm having a really tough time trying to figure out fills. I always panic for some reason and begin to rush and make a mess of it all and lose count. And this is the absolute best video I've ever seen. Tomorrow I will start with practicing these fills. I learn pretty quick so I should be well on my way.

    I don't know if you will see this comment, but I just saw this video for the first time, as I only recently found your channel. I am learning so much from you. I am about to turn 65 and I've only been playing for a little over a year. I've never had lessons, I just learn basic beats of classic rock songs and do the best I can. I am only now learning about the importance of sticking and I think it is going to bring me to the next level. I got my Groove Responsibly T-shirt yesterday and wore it to band practice last night. :)

    Hey this is huge. As a new drummer, I've been trying to learn many different charted fills and have struggled to memorize them. I'm amazed how different these each sound by just changing the sticking on a common fill. Then spreading the fills across the kit opens up a whole new repertoire again. This is transformational yet easy to learn. Thanks!

  • @jphifer2848
    @jphifer2848 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Outstanding stuff, Rob. You are making better drumming more accessible for the large group of “just OK” drummers! All this stuff is clear & doable.
    The importance of the foundation of sticking vs the color & texture of the voicing is so fundamental - thanks for pointing out the order of priority!
    Likewise, your tutorial of kick drum pedal technique (+, 0, -), was clear and easy to grasp& practice. Many thanks!

    Wow, what a fantastic lesson. If you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. If you teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime! I got so much more out of this video than countless other "beginner fill" videos because you're teaching me how to come up with new fills on the fly from the ground up, and you showed me how to practice them effectively on a loop. I'm practicing all 5 patterns with a metronome on the up-beat. I will never freeze up when it's fill time, ever again (hopefully)! Thank you Rob

    I am a left-handed,but play as a right handet...I'm pretty I play with churches and groups but I'm not professional with it.but this video just made me really realize that the sticking does make a difference..I developed a right handed way of playing over the years so I have that same sound but either I'm single stroking it or double bounce it..but it sounds jus like this video..I never really practiced left handed playing..but this video showed me a technique to playing..now my right leg needs lotsa practice I can't get the fill using the foot pedal..but..it sounds the same with what I do..u can bounce or slide my foot on the pedal but I can't control it to play a fill with it...I thought bout trying a double pedal for awhile but haven't yet..but again this video showed me something to practice

    Been playing bass for about a year. My ADHD really keeps me from reaching my full potential on the bass, although getting good, I had to take up drums so I can push myself to stay in my studio. About 3 months ago I bought a used drum kit and decided to watch a few of your tutorials and a few on using double kick pedals and I swear I've been playing 4-6 hours a day during the week and weekends I'm in my studio 14-16 hours unless I have something goin on... everyone thinks I'm lying when I say I've been playing 3 months if that! Thanks man your video shows are all most people would need to actually become a drummer. Cant say I didn't have experience with beats because I'm also a DJ/engineer so I'm fluent with beats and counts and timing/measures and etc but I just wanted to give you some love back! Keep it up!

  • @michaeleagle2
    @michaeleagle2 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Rob man once again you read my mind. I use these all just jamming, it's when I start the think about my next few phrases I get caught up. Practicing the actual sticking mechanics I think will free my mind... Instinctively selecting one depending on the next phrasing..... And Plus 1 for the far right side crash.. I stumbled into the need as I do a good bit of floor tom work naturally. Having a crash and a splash far right allowed me more flexibility in connecting to new Phrases, as well as that reset to the snare is less manic..... If you do a clinic in the Washington dc metro area, or Atlanta Georgia area after this fall I'm in the front row.. Jah Bless

I now have 5 fills written in chalk on the wall in front of me, I am going to stick the metronome on 60 bpm and work my way through these until I can nail them.

    I've been playing my whole life but am self-taught and missed out on a lot of the fundamentals. This is SO helpful and I'm already seeing changes in my playing. Thanks so much!

    What a full-sounding bass note. Mine by contrast sounds like it's full of sweaters. Love that sound!

    These are great building blocks, and if my wife wasn’t in bed already, I’d be trying these out on the kit right now. There’s always tomorrow! All of the patterns are great, but I really dig the third one. Cheers!

    Rob, this is exactly what i was looking for; principles in drum fills. Will help me with my drum fills without me just copying/pasting someone elses fills. Hopefully i will ind these useful for 3/4, 12/8 time too.

    Please definitely more videos for OK players. I learned to play in church and I learned by ear. First time I’m actually watching a lesson. And this lessons are just so easy to follow. And yes I’ll be getting my t-shirt. Thanks and please keep it going man.
