This is the first time I've heard 1/4, 1/8, and 1/16 notes explained in a way that makes sense to me. I recently found a small tom tom at goodwill, and i bought a snare from Ye Olde Amazon. I've been practicing paradiddles, then got side tracked when I heard some guest musicians come to my school and play djembes and tubanos. I put the drums aside for a bit to play around with some hand drums....I really have a focus problem.
But anywho, thank you for helping me get this sorted in my head!

I use these beats a majority of the time and the best part about them is the versatility with these beats. You can easily make up your own fills, add extra notes to the beat, or if your feeling really saucy, add paradiddles to the disco flipped beat. I tell anyone looking to learn drums to master these beats first, as they are great openers to learning more advanced riffs, one must learn to walk before he can fly. 👍

Great lesson. One thing about the 'one-ee-and-da' 16th notes verbalization: For decades eight notes were taught '1 and 2 and 3 and 4' just like in this lesson. Sixteenth notes were taught simply by using the letters of the word AND - i.e 'one eh en dee, 2 eh end dee, etc. and written 1-a-n-d 2-a-n-d and so forth. Seems like about 15 years ago this 'ee-and-da' thing started and I think it's just a mistaken interpretation or '1-a-n-d'. Anyway, try it out - it makes sense, certainly when written and trying to explain to a kind.

I played drums a little bit. I’m definitely an extreme newbie. But for me, I have a hard time trying to play and count. Not for the simple beats like this but harder beats playing while counting is nearly impossible for me much better if I just play by ear/ feel the groove and I can stay in time better. Is that weird or is it because I played guitar for 25 years? And learned to play that myself by ear lol.

I want to see if you can do this on a practice pad: ⤵️
First play 16th Notes at 100BPM. Then play: Right Left Right. Right Left Right Right RightLeft.
    *Repeat*
    *Group of Three:*
For this one, call in two fellow drummers, and the three of you can practice this on three practice pads. And now speed up the BPM 132BPM
Left and Right drummers Mirror each other.
Right Left Both. *Hit middle pad for both with both sticks* Right Left, Right Left. *Right Left drummer hits middle pad with their drumsticks individually on “Right Left”*
    *Repeat*
Middle: Right Left Arms Up. Right Left, Right Left.
    *Repeat for 28 seconds*
Finale: Left and Right hits both their drums and the middle drum three times. And the middle drummer hit his/her pad three times. On the last hit, all three drummers raise both arms up. Once you got this down, you can replace the practice pads with three 16” Floor Toms.
