I totally agree with your point that they made him too sympathetic. And him acc having no regret and literally moving somewhere else is an interesting idea i dont even think was explored in the og book or movie

Literally no one has brought this up, but disney low-key copied the onceler when they made maleficent 2014.
Like, try to guess which character I'm talking about:
This character was pure evil in their og counterparts and didn't have very many redeeming qualities. But they get remade into a new movie where they're shown to be more redeemable and sympathetic. They were actually really nice at the beginning of their movie and easy to root for, but smth tragic happens to them that makes them evil. But evil during their villain arc, they're not ALL THAT evil or irredeemable. They clear have regrets and are remorseful for hurting the. one's they care for. Look at that, they DO still have a heart afterall 🥰. Then they're forgiven at the end and they're the good gut once again. Plus, totally unrelated, they're kinda hot in their new movie. Guess who I'm talking about, onceler or maleficent.
