At first I didn’t get this ship, but hearing you read out the scene where it all started made me actually understand why people would get so attached to it. It added a bit more story to it and gave it a new context that’s really sweet. At first I thought their relationship would be full of conflict and stuff, but it’s actually about two heartbroken people finding love together one fateful night. I’m actually kinda intrigued now!
This ship and dynamic is just brilliant. The way they both have their hearts broken, very differently (Twilight unable to find love and Mordecai being rejected by his very own love, Margaret) they are similar but not entirely. They understand eachother. They complete eachother. They NEED eachother.
I had never heard of the fanfic before but from the little blurbs you read the writing is pretty solid, especially for something written by a kid. Honestly I kinda miss the days of "cringy," massive crossover fics, I had a lot of fun writing some of my own.
This is why I love fanfiction so much. People can be so creative and you can really tell this person put in a lot of thought to this and is better than some published books.
The fact that mordetwi came back out of absolutely nowhere, when it was already a meme around when the image came out a few years ago shows how slow 2021 is going.
Deviant art was a WILD time back in the early 2010’s. The things I saw that were made out of that era were so strange. The ships between characters on shows totally different from one another, and game franchises that had nothing to do with each other, mixed with people discovering weird kinks, kids just discovering how to draw, and those who were just hopeless romantics with a wild imagination. All of that spawned the most insane art I’ve ever seen. I had to leave that site a few years ago due to inactivity, but the artists on that site can get really creative and are super talented if they put their mind to it
Can confirm, was very active on deviantART in the early 2010's. Still have an account, but the site updates caused most people to move away from the website.
I can confirm all that in addition to the weirdos that'd sometimes request weird fetishy art from you(esp if you didnt know any better..) Very strange place to spend any number of years on. Then I moved to Tumblr.
My friend and I used to play a game around this time where we'd go Newest and flip through the pages of recently-submitted art, about 24 per page. If we found a page without any MLP, Homestuck, or Sonic fanart, we won the game. I think we won maybe twice. Eventually we added Lion King to the mix because that was starting to become totally ubiquitous for some reason. Of course, the real prize was the completely bizarre and hilarious fanart we found along the way.

My favourite thing about the Mordetwi meme is that a lot of artists/animators have put a lot of effort into their recreations. A crack ship this nonsensical shouldn't inspire actual talent but it does. This meme gives me SO much nostalgia and I'm genuinely so glad it's blown up in the light hearted way it has. I get to laugh at the dumb things kid me thought were cool, but in a way that celebrates it without bashing it. It's just a really wholesome meme and it butters my biscuits and makes the child in me really happy.

I think it’s because she’s an internet child. She just gets it. A lot of other channels like this will just talk about facts but you can tell that they just read it somewhere. Izzy can understand events and contextualise them because she’s grown up on the internet.

Honestly crossover ships being separate from shipping drama is my favourite thing about them. The way shipping culture has moved steadily from "I like these two characters together" to "I think these two characters should be together in canon" in terms of discourse is kind of annoying, and the way crossover shipping sidesteps the issue because everyone knows they'll never really be together is part of what makes them so appealing for me.

Reminds me so much of Non/Disney . A group that ships Disney characters with other franchises or other Disney characters but instead of just art, there is so so much editing that it’s honestly impressive. Recently I got a video in my recommended that was a Non/Disney mep. (Multi Editor Project), they are still growing bigger and it’s a nice rabbit hole to go down. It all started with Jelsa (Jack Frost x Elsa) but they don’t only do ships, they love to do crossovers too. The thing that really stands out is how well they edit things together to make it look like real footage.

Twilight is singing about her heartbreak over Red, and Mordecai is singing about his one sided feelings over Twilight. There never was a ship, they were both upset about one sided unrequited feelings.

I had never heard of the fanfic before but from the little blurbs you read the writing is pretty solid, especially for something written by a kid. Honestly I kinda miss the days of "cringy," massive crossover fics, I had a lot of fun writing some of my own.
This is why I love fanfiction so much. People can be so creative and you can really tell this person put in a lot of thought to this and is better than some published books.

That airplanes song started playing on the radio while we were on a car trip and I started SCREAMING
Deviant art was a WILD time back in the early 2010’s. The things I saw that were made out of that era were so strange. The ships between characters on shows totally different from one another, and game franchises that had nothing to do with each other, mixed with people discovering weird kinks, kids just discovering how to draw, and those who were just hopeless romantics with a wild imagination. All of that spawned the most insane art I’ve ever seen. I had to leave that site a few years ago due to inactivity, but the artists on that site can get really creative and are super talented if they put their mind to it
Can confirm, was very active on deviantART in the early 2010's. Still have an account, but the site updates caused most people to move away from the website.
I can confirm all that in addition to the weirdos that'd sometimes request weird fetishy art from you(esp if you didnt know any better..) Very strange place to spend any number of years on.

My friend and I used to play a game around this time where we'd go Newest and flip through the pages of recently-submitted art, about 24 per page. If we found a page without any MLP, Homestuck, or Sonic fanart, we won the game. I think we won maybe twice. Eventually we added Lion King to the mix because that was starting to become totally ubiquitous for some reason. Of course, the real prize was the completely bizarre and hilarious fanart we found along the way.
@@RisingSunfish Oh geez, yep, going down memory lane, there was nothing but MLP, Homestuck, Sonic art, and the Lion King back then. But it was mostly the lion king that I saw people using bases or recoloring Kira.
My favourite thing about the Mordetwi meme is that a lot of artists/animators have put a lot of effort into their recreations. A crack ship this nonsensical shouldn't inspire actual talent but it does.

This meme gives me SO much nostalgia and I'm genuinely so glad it's blown up in the light hearted way it has. I get to laugh at the dumb things kid me thought were cool, but in a way that celebrates it without bashing it. the mordetwi airplanes image was most definitely passed around before, although definitely not to such a mainstream scale. i'm pretty sure it was around the era animation memes and art commentators like solar sands and spoctor theory were huge.

I think it’s because she’s an internet child. She just gets it. A lot of other channels like this will just talk about facts but you can tell that they just read it somewhere. Izzy can understand events and contextualise them because she’s grown up on the internet.

I can confirm that this was passed around in around 2016-18ish! For me, i found the airplanes image from a solar sands video of "browsing deviantart". unfortunately, i think the video is now lost to time since he deleted a lot of his old deviantart videos.

Honestly crossover ships being separate from shipping drama is my favourite thing about them. The way shipping culture has moved steadily from "I like these two characters together" to "I think these two characters should be together in canon" in terms of discourse is kind of annoying, and the way crossover shipping sidesteps the issue because everyone knows they'll never really be together is part of what makes them so appealing for me.

Reminds me so much of Non/Disney . A group that ships Disney characters with other franchises or other Disney characters but instead of just art, there is so so much editing that it’s honestly impressive. Recently I got a video in my recommended that was a Non/Disney mep. (Multi Editor Project), they are still growing bigger and it’s a nice rabbit hole to go down. It all started with Jelsa (Jack Frost x Elsa) but they don’t only do ships, they love to do crossovers too.
The thing that really stands out is how well they edit things together to make it look like real footage.

I think I saw someone on Twitter claiming to be the original artist of the Mordetwi picture. They said they were a kid at the time and mainly made the picture because they thought they'd get some attention and popularity if they did.

Now that I think about it, I think there's something kind of heartbreaking about the MordeTwi shipping, in that if you put it in context, it probably isn't a ship at all. Twilight is singing about her heartbreak over Red, and Mordecai is singing about his one sided feelings over Twilight. There never was a ship, they were both upset about one sided unrequited feelings.
