    Bought a 996 C4S last year. 2003 in Atlas Grey from a reputable dealer who has been supportive and helped with the (so far) £14k spent on repairs and maintenance. The obsession with IMS and bore scoring on these cars is great ... because it has kept purchase prices low. I have a feeling the word is getting out!
    I had an early (first week of ownership) issue - defective manifold and exhaust hanger work carried out by a previous owner, but covered by warranty - requiring the engine and gearbox (Tip) out, so followed the herd and changed the IMS (and RMS). Have the original bearing on my desk ... in ‘as new’ condition!
    Then developed a misfire at low revs. Bore scoring cried the masses. It’s ticking and slapping said the M96 haters. Scoped and no bore scoring. Differential diagnosis pointed to a hydraulic inlet cam follower stuck in high lift - which it was. Engine out for a second time, bank 2 followers replaced and ... perfect. They pretty much all tick when cold. Most cars sound different at start up. So important to let these M96 engines warm up before injecting ... enthusiasm.
    The obsession with IMS and bore scoring keeps people away from these cars. Almost all are fine and unaffected. Try to find one with a blown engine! I wanted to with a plan to replace it with a Hartech over bore. Easier to find Lord Lucan.
    The real cost is everything else. If it’s not been done, the suspension will need work. Replace everything that you can afford to swap. I did. Drives like new. No rattles and very precise. Brake pipes, steering pipes, transmission cooling pipes are all out of sight and corrode heavily over time. If you’ve got to drop the engine, transmission or front subframe, replace everything that needs doing then - transverse brake pipes, air oil separator, starter motor, alternator, water pump, thermostats, coolant header tank, hoses - it’ll give you peace of mind, a cheaper bill (in the end) and a reliable car.
    The problems I experienced were largely down to buying a car that hadn’t been driven for 4 years (a few hundred miles in that time). Net of the dealer repair contribution, I now have an expensive £28k, 90,000 mile car, but it is mechanically near perfect. The mileage ... sure, I’d prefer it to be lower and it will limit resale value, but I always intended to keep the car and, eventually, will give it to one of my sons. And if the worst should happen, I’ll get my Hartech 3.9!
    Money well spent here. Yours looks fantastic. My bet is that it drives even better. The 996 C4S, whether it follows earlier 911 values or not, is a classic. Great analogue car. Not hugely quick by modern standards - I have a daily 2019 Touareg that is pretty close to the same performance - but it is more than quick enough, beautiful to look at (the Porsche, not the VW!), changes direction like not much else and is unique even among 911s. And you can drive it anywhere and, mostly, people smile when they look at it ... rather than have some irrational envy reaction because it’s red or orange and Italian!
    That exhaust note is great, by the way. Mine has some aftermarket, once switchable but prior to me fixed open, Top Gear (?) boxes. Raspy at low revs. Drove it through the Hindhead Tunnel with windows down. Embarrassingly hooligan loud when the high lift kicks in. They probably need to go ... maybe.
    Found your first C4S video not long after buying mine and am following this and (most) of the other channel content with interest. Thanks!

    • @TGE
      @TGE  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Read all that with interest. Couldn’t be more right. If you’ve seen some of the comments here people have been screaming bore scoring at me willy nilly 😂 Drive safe & maybe see you at the next meet

Also the silver wheels are a cool contrast against the paint colour. Velly tasteful mods which have enhanced the Porker 👍
