My dream is to have a Gibson Flying V going into a tube screamer driving the crap out of a classic vintage Marshall head on top of two 1960 cabinets (one angled one baffled) and destroying everything around me
What I did notice was how utterly terrible practically everything played through it sounded...that's not to say this is always the case with what Chappers plays/demos - not at all. But the sound here - for whatever the reason - is absolutely atrocious...
Another thing about the Satriani Head is that all channels in all modes work well--incredibly flexible, nice-sounding.The Crunch channel in the Amber mode sounds a great deal like the 6100 at full volume and full gain (even though they call it the "AFD Mode" in the Manual). After using this head as an everyday-driver for nearly seven years, for me, the Crunch channel in the Amber mode is home base, with a 250 ms slap-back delay from an Eventide Eclipse. Very nice sound, like Steve Lukather. I also use the OD1 Channel in Red mode, tweaked and dialed-back so that I can switch between custom shop guitars with EMG active pickups and a Les Paul with Custom Shop Gibson Hum-bucking pickups, and a Deluxe "Telemacaster" Thinline with Gen 4 Fender Noiseless pickups. I can merely switch channels without fiddling with guitar or stage volume. And, the choke that precedes the output transformer allows this amp to sound great at reasonable volume levels, if necessary. :)
I really love your Joe Satriani story. I always imagine that he would be that way. I've seen all these clips of him in interviews and he just seems like a pretty down to earth person. That's cool man.
Watching this video now, I can say meeting you 3 years ago was the same for me! You took the time to actually teach me a dorje song at a clinic I was super duper early to haha. Thanks rob!
I remember when I bought G3 live in Tokyo and Satriani came out to do his set, starting with a little jam before "Up In Flames". The clean sounded so amazing, and then when he kicked the distortion on for the beginning riff I was totally in love. I asked "what kind of amp is he using - I want one!". It was the JSX. Luckily, years later, after they where discontinued I found a used JSX half stack in guitar center for $800. Best purchase of my life. And I must say, that amp sounds so much better.
Its awesome seeing and hearing Chappers talk about Satch with a giddy grin on his face. He is my favourite artist/guitar player and I wouldn't have picked up a guitar if it wasn't for him. Always with me, Always with you is going to be the first dance song at my wedding.
I remember queuing for a Satch gig years ago in London, and Joe pulled up outside the venue in a black cab, cut through the queue where I was standing and I grabbed his hand and shock it, almost blubbing like a little girl! At least we have heroes with talent...
I bought this amplifier in September 2015, and, yeah, buddy! it rocks. I haven't even fully explored the entire range of settings four-months-in, because I am especially drawn to the "Crunch" Channel in the "Amber" mode--AFD-voicing. I also have the EL34-version of the 6100 (1992) 30th Anniversary head. There is something especially sweet in the voicing of the Red Channel of the EL34-loaded 6100 that can't be found in this amplifier. Even so, the Satriani Head is incredibly versatile and punchy: I have not one complaint about any of the channels or modes. In short, this head can give many of the much more expensive "salon" amplifier heads a run for their money, especially in terms of providing a wide-range of Marshall sounds that are all highly "useable." Like the 6100, the JVM410HJS sounds great at reasonable volume settings. And, should you want to play on a vast outdoor stage on occasion, this amplifier is capable of achieving eviction-notice volume-levels. ;) This is--by far--the loudest freaking Marshall that I've owned--in a good way. :D
The Satriani Head is a far better choice than the JVM410H, in my view: The Satriani Head has much richer character than the standard JVM410H, and the Satriani Head has all of the flexibility of the standard JVM 410H, and then some. The JVM410HJS is the nicest head that Marshall has made since the 6100 30th Anniversary Head in 1992, and it offers great tones and is punchy, as well.
you feeling anybetter, i really hope you are it almost killed me not being able to watch a new chappers video :O keep uup the good work lads... All the best ;) x
Think of it this way, that's probably how they developed the amp, with Joe's setup, and Joe's ear. So you're getting the little bit of tone coloration that occurs with stuff like that. It's like playing an EVH 5150 through a Marshall cabinet. It may have the same speakers, but it will sound different.
The Crunch channel in Red mode is what you're looking for and it depends on how you adjust the settings, but it can definitely get you in the Slash neighborhood.
The best video you guys have ever done!! Killer amp, killer playing, and killer EVERYTHING!! Way better than your new videos!! Get Rebea in there more!!
I understand that feeling Chappers because I met my hero on the 25th February 2013 and I met you and I turned into a girl haha. What makes me feel awesome is February is my birth year. So it was a late 21st birthday present =] cheers man you made me pick up my guitar again and gave my the confidence i needed for youtube videos and such thanks mate
I own this amp and trust me the sounds these guys are getting are not what you hear in true time..this is the ULTIMATE MARSHALL amp..it has no equal!!!
What it comes down to is "do YOU like the sound". As other comments mention, an amp's sound will be changed by a PA system, by sitting it in a mix with other instruments, by recording it and making it a digital image and then by compressing, delaying, reverberating it and by adding modulation effects. Then it will be slightly altered again in the mastering process. I look at 1 guitar & 1 amp. How does that sound, respond, scream, get pretty and dirty WITHOUT PEDALS? Me & the amp - good or bad?
More videos of these guys we watch more we see how much the sound comes from the guitarist's fingers. By far these demo videos do not sound even close to the great musicians who use these equipment and who brought us here. These videos also encourage us to seek our own sound/style! Great video and amp buddies!! You got my like!
I recall wanting the 30th anniversary edition half stack when in college (1992) purely because of it being blue! However it was only ever a dream! (still is)
I have a JVM410h and I never really thought of getting a noise gate. If I ever do, the boss noise suppressor works. I also really like having the reverb on the amp... wouldve been a nice change if Satch had a spring reverb thrown in opposed to the studio verb on the standard 410.
The MG series is a good solid state entry into the world of Marshalls. Personally I own a 2nd gen DSL50 and think it's one of the best Marshalls around.
Yup, I'm glad I went with the Script version of the Phase 90 instead of the block version. I feel like the block version is a bit to swell-y and sounds a bit too much like an auto-wah.
I love the way they're going on about having reverb pedals in the chain and satch says in the live from san fansisco dvd that he never uses reverb as it's too cluttered (or something like that), he just uses a couple of staggered delays.
The cleans tones left a bit to be desired but the noise gate was probably my favorite part. It's really hard to get a good decay and natural feel to a noise gate, but this one seemed to do just fine. It's probably a bit too much for me but I like this amp's sound way better than the JSX peaveys
Had a jvm410h since 2007 and changed to a JS signature model when they were released, best amp I’ve ever had. Versatility and sound. I agree reverb would of been nice, just one gripe going from crunch to clean or od 1 2 to clean, there’s a loud crossover noise😣 but that’s the only thing that could be better, 9/10 😉
I saw Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, and Steve Morse, at the Budapest G3 show. Those guys are amazing, and (trust me) they really are worth watching live. The best part was the G3 jam! It is funny this video got uploaded the day after the concert.
Not many people will just run a guitar into an amp, they'll have boosts, modulation effects, wahs, etc, all sorts. There are plenty of demos out there that showcase the amp, these guys showcase all sorts of gear in real-life scenarios, how you'd actually run a rig live or in the studio.
great review! I bet that thing would be a monster cranked up. i take it the Satchurator is a more modern replacement for Joe's usage of the DS-1, back in the day? That's what he had on the floor when i saw him in the 80's (DS-1)
Dt25 linked or not is a great head. Then I found a very low price on a Bugera infinium 333 and was blown away. Some day I will have my stack of Luxury heads.Engl, Mesa,Marshall etc.
I love my Marshall JVM! My Fender American Strat gets the Jimi Hendrix Marshall tone no problem with very little tweaking. My ESP Eclipse gets a breathtaking Les Paul Marshall tone, and my PRS CE 24 is just the scary perfect guitar for this amp, period, all day long. I don't give a fuck about Satriani, so you can pick up a JVM without his specs for less. The Marshall JVM is an amazing amp! The green OD 1 channel will give you all the gain you need for hard rock.
Premier Guitar did a Rig Rundown with joe not too long ago, and I think he doesn't actually use Reverb so much as he uses 2 delays and certain other effects only as he needs them depending on the song he's playing.
I found two other (Hungarian?) JVM410HJS videos that don't come up in searches as often. The guy uses a LES PAUL and it really brings out the best of the amp IMO! There is still a boost on the high gain which is annoying because we all search out these videos to hear what THE AMP sounds like, not the pedals, but search for the videos titled Marshall JVM410H Joe Satriani - erősítő teszt - 1 and Marshall JVM410H Joe Satriani - erősítő teszt - 2
yea yea nice amp. NOW about those Vision shoes!!! Man im sick of searching around for some Vision shoes like that but cant seem to find any, my old ones have gone to hell after 20 years.
I'd plug the guitar right into the wah and go from the wah into the Satchurator. From there I'd go into the phaser. But the current setup does sound very close to Satch though.
when i think of shredder, i think of guys like malmsteen, michael angelo batio, rusty cooley, jason becker. Even joe himself says he never understood why he was put in the shredder category. He doesn't play super fast scales and licks all the time just for the sake of it. he is musical in his approach and may throw a fast lick in their every once in a while for good measure.
Great review as usual. Rob, what are your typical settings for say a hard rock tone? Im hopeless at dialling tones in :[ And i think you guys should look into stocking Egnater amps, they are amazing!
Not the best review of this amp, tone wise. Very poorly recorded. It's actually a great amp. Hate the cabinet with the T75s. I use mine with Greenbacks and it sounds stellar.
as im maturing as a player, i no longer use reverb. just delay. and joe uses 2 time machines, so there ya go. i only use one. but its all the ambiance i will ever need
I am American & a huge fan of both Anderton's reviews, and a huge fan of Joe Satriani.I have a JVM Marshall 250 H 50 watt Head. That being said I have to say I'm not loving the Marshall Satriani. The tone for me is a bit lacking for some reason? Maybe it's the guitar in this video not sure? (it always sounds like the guitar is in the middle position.) Anyway I have to say Marshall got it right the fist time. I'm also using a Fryette Memphis 30 watt combo and amazing amp! you should do a review.
The JSX is a great amp for Hard rock/metal, the cleans are amazing, very rich and warm, the crunch channel is perfect for anything really, the ultra is just crazyness! :) If you haven;t yet, get yourself a JSX and be happy :)
Never have the words been uttered "I bought this Marshall because of the superb clean channel."
My dream is to have a Gibson Flying V going into a tube screamer driving the crap out of a classic vintage Marshall head on top of two 1960 cabinets (one angled one baffled) and destroying everything around me
no tube screamer... just a booster. amp on 11.
+Eric Lopez mesa grid slammer is great for boost. the best I've tried
The holy grail of tone. Marshall and Gibson is a better duo than bread and butter, rum and coke, better even than Kirk Hammet and Wah
Cocaine and waffles! :D
Flying Vs aren't all they are cracked up to be. Very uncomfortable
Anyone else notice how surprisingly good the lighting is in the room this time?
What I did notice was how utterly terrible practically everything played through it sounded...that's not to say this is always the case with what Chappers plays/demos - not at all. But the sound here - for whatever the reason - is absolutely atrocious...

I bought a 50 Watt Tube Combo HK Amp years ago, that I will NEVER get rid of! I paid $1,000 and I think that it is worth every penny!
Watching this video now, I can say meeting you 3 years ago was the same for me! You took the time to actually teach me a dorje song at a clinic I was super duper early to haha. Thanks rob!

you guys give the best reviews bar none! appreciate it much!
I love how people like chappers and other artist play other artists songs, but they put their own little twist n changes on them. it's awesome.
Best reviews on the net and cool guys both of you. Thanks for the work
I remember queuing for a Satch gig years ago in London, and Joe pulled up outside the venue in a black cab, cut through the queue where I was standing and I grabbed his hand and shock it, almost blubbing like a little girl! At least we have heroes with talent...

Would u recommend I go for the satriani model or the regular jvm410 for light to heavy rock and funk rock?
The Satriani Head is a far better choice than the JVM410H, in my view: The Satriani Head has much richer character than the standard JVM410H, and the Satriani Head has all of the flexibility of the standard JVM 410H, and then some. Nice!! Can u get modern metal tones or not rly? I know it's good for 80s metal right
I just got a JVM 205 and its amazing so with the addition of that noise gate i can only drool at that addition :-)
I own one..this is without a doubt THE ULTIMATE MARSHALL AMP!! There is no better!!!
i think rob chapman should use Ibanez JS series. That guitar sounds horrible, even with mojo in the bridge pickup. No offense, just saying....
Well, he's not the best player unfortunately
It does sound crappy. It almost sounds wired wrong/ out of phase.
you feeling anybetter, i really hope you are it almost killed me not being able to watch a new chappers video :O keep uup the good work lads... All the best ;) x
I love these guys, I don't have to watch t.v anymore, I just watch clips of these guys and I get to laugh out loud! haha
This is probably the best review I have ever seen.
Whenever Chappers plays, it ALWAYS sounds like him. Even when he plays other peoples songs. It's so cool.
Wow! It sounds amazing! Great playing too!
The best sounding amp I have ever owned OD/distortion wise. (Gibson/Dean).
You guys do the best reviews on youtube. Keep it up ;)
I bought a Retro Tube....love it. I still plan on giving one of these Marshalls a spin
Think of it this way, that's probably how they developed the amp, with Joe's setup, and Joe's ear. So you're getting the little bit of tone coloration that occurs with stuff like that. This is probably the best review of this amp that will ever surface on this planet.
Joe loves midrange. This amp is definitely voiced this way. But I found tons of great sounds, I just don't need them all.
That really depends on what sound you are looking for. Wah before overdrive/Distortion is as common as putting a drive unit before the wah.
That silver les paul on the left is a thing of beauty, i want it.
You blokes are a riot. I ain't buyin the amp cause it's too dear but love to watch ya'll
Nothing better to do on my birthday than watch a few Andertons reviews and Fretted Americana videos ;)
I wasn't sure if these guys were British, but the Union Jack pillows convinced me.
More videos of these guys we watch more we see how much the sound comes from the guitarist's fingers. By far these demo videos do not sound even close to the great musicians who use these equipment and who brought us here. These videos also encourage us to seek our own sound/style! Thanks for the reply, I can't wait to get one!
That ML sounds waaaaay too fizzy in the bridge position...
That means a lot to me dude, I really appreciate it ;-)
The MG series is a good solid state entry into the world of Marshalls. Personally I own a 2nd gen DSL50 and think it's one of the best Marshalls around.
OMG this tone! I knew there was a reason I bought that saturator. This amp almost makes me love marshall.
Yup, I'm glad I went with the Script version of the Phase 90 instead of the block version. I feel like the block version is a bit to swell-y and sounds a bit too much like an auto-wah.
I love the way they're going on about having reverb pedals in the chain and satch says in the live from san fansisco dvd that he never uses reverb as it's too cluttered (or something like that), he just uses a couple of staggered delays.
best lighting ever in a video :D
The cleans tones left a bit to be desired but the noise gate was probably my favorite part. It's really hard to get a good decay and natural feel to a noise gate, but this one seemed to do just fine.
It's probably a bit too much for me but I like this amp's sound way better than the JSX peaveys
I like how the amp really came alive in Bea's hands. You can see he's been playing a JVM for 5 years
been waiting for this forever!
I've played JVM's. This is something else. I'm diggin the tone
You are correct. Stevie Ray used a Marshall for clean and Fender for overdrive.
I love the chapman t shirts!really looking forward for the new guitar models
Rob you do THE best gear demos. Thanks.
soo awesome you got to meet Satch.....i would probably cry haha!
Joe is using the blue ones on tour. I just saw a video of his rig for G3. He had 4 or 5 out with him on stage
I saw Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, and Steve Morse, at the Budapest G3 show. Those guys are amazing, and (trust me) they really are worth watching live. The best part was the G3 jam! It is funny this video got uploaded the day after the concert.
EVERYTIME Rabea plays, it just has so much power and everything you hear is like FUCK! THIS IS AWESOME!
This is an amazing amp. The JVM was already an amazing platform but the HJS just takes all my complaints about the normal model and resolves them.
Not many people will just run a guitar into an amp, they'll have boosts, modulation effects, wahs, etc, all sorts. There are plenty of demos out there that showcase the amp, these guys showcase all sorts of gear in real-life scenarios, how you'd actually run a rig live or in the studio.

Dt25 linked or not is a great head. Then I found a very low price on a
Bugera infinium 333 and was blown away. Some day I will have my stack of Luxury heads.Engl, Mesa,Marshall etc.
Thanks dude, yeah should have thought about the POG...good idea ;-)
the wait is over oh yessssssssssss
A bit of a shame you guys didn't put a POG and the satriani siganture delays in the fx loop. Great demo though Rob and excellent playing as always.
The green OD 1 channel will give you all the gain you need for hard rock.
that is the best amp marshall has ever made.................................period.

I found two other (Hungarian?) JVM410HJS videos that don't come up in searches as often. The guy uses a LES PAUL and it really brings out the best of the amp IMO! There is still a boost on the high gain which is annoying because we all search out these videos to hear what THE AMP sounds like, not the pedals, but search for the videos titled
Marshall JVM410H Joe Satriani - erősítő teszt - 1
and
Marshall JVM410H Joe Satriani - erősítő teszt - 2
nice tees guys! I Especially like the Aerosmith one!
A noise gate is definitely needed from the standard.Thats essential
yea yea nice amp.
13:51 love that!!! you guys are awesome:)
I still own the JSX peavey combo. That still is a killer amp..
Would be cool to see a side by side comparison with the Peavey JSX and the JVM
Ha ha thanks mate, it was fun to do ;-)
got the extremist tone perfect!!!
I thought the same! The regular JVM410 has an awesome clean tone, though!
Great video Rob by the way..
Fav line
Cap: with or without youuuu....
Rob: don't go there!
Cap: ok
I think i've fallen in love with Marshall high gain all over again
Mother of jesus that Bea can play! Choooone!
The Ibanez JS2400 is fitted with a Mo'Joe in the Bridge and the Ibanez JS1200 is fitted with a Paf Joe in the Neck.
Rob i love the way you play....... :-)
14:21 the moment I was waiting for!!
Haha, its like a new "Marshall Art" i see what you did there Chappers @12:17!
Is that type of clean at 6:47 coming from the guitar, the amp's settings, or simply the amp ('cause I'm not digging it).
That is the sound of a crystal-clean single coil pickup, so it is the guitar/pickup.
Yeah that sounded ugly
Very plastic-y sounding.
metalmusician6798 Watch Paul Glover's review of the same amp then ;)
metalmusician6798 I have a regular JVM and it sounds nothing like that.
might be the cab, i got a normal jvm410h and i can ensure you the clean channels move alot of air ;P
This was overall a great review!! My only complaint is that I thought there should've been more bass added to the Clean.
