    Since you've done a Joe Satriani sounds like I think it would be interesting to do one based on his close friend and former guitar student Steve Vai.

    Ironically, the Boss DS1 was staring them right in the face in the pedal cabinet. If they had done just a little research on Joe, they would've quickly found that he used the DS1 into a Marshall(set clean) for decades. Then it's all about setting the gain stages for each. They still did a good job however. I own the DSL40c and it has a nice sounding distortion which is what saved the day.

    • @maxthecat1235

    The JS 2410 Neck pickup is not a single coil pickup. It's called a Fast Track Pro(Satch Track) from Dimarzio and is esentially a humbucker with a single coil profile. The push pull on the volume and tone knob allow for coil tapping and (HPF) High Pass filter.

    Part of the Satch sound is the DS-1 (his are modded of course), or nowadays the Vox Satchurator pedal into a clean or slightly driven channel on his amp. Though dialing in a fair amount of gain on the amp does a decent job as well.

  • @kaelaneketone8054
    @kaelaneketone8054 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    What u need, is a Boss Ds1 on full gain and tone at 9 o'clock, Roland JC on clean with low mids/treble, a short delay, and one of satch's signature bridge pickups with volume rolled back. Bout as traditional Satch as you can get

  • @zdunne

    Also, Satriani did come out with a branded line of Vox pedals but they have been discontinued though they are pretty good and I still use the Vox Satriani Amplug as my favorite piece of gear I own playing it through my Marshall amp with a auxiliary connector.

    Yeah lads - what would be AWESOME is comparing
    BUDGET setup V NO BUDGET setup
    to see if money really matters for most of us chumps who will never sound like Satch anyway.
    That guitar was lovely. Some awesome tones and a beautiful colour. Stoked your shop has such a huge range of IBANEZ on the rack. Here in Brisbane Australia our retailers stock sweet FA Ibanez on the shelf. Essentially we have to purchase online which means we can’t get to test out the different models, look feel touch and sound. So disappointing for a 40 year Ibanez guy like me especially with all the new models they have now. Even just the JS line alone is HUGE!!!!
    Love your work and your humour. I’m signing up.

  • @GazMoz78
    @GazMoz78 9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Sounds great. I'm with you on everything except the Compressor and the EQ? Don't understand the use of a compressor and without it you don't need the EQ? Joe uses a distorted Marshall with an overdrive pedal pushing it to get singing sustain, so why not take that route and eliminate the need for 2 pedals? Plus the pedal Joe used in the 80's was a Boss DS1, cheap as you like. I do love your video's BTW but I feel you could actually research the rigs of the "sounds like" players before hand. Just a bit of honest criticism, Much respect!!! ;-)

    Nailed the sound on this 'without' video, moreso than the 'with' video. Nicely done!
    1:57 Heads up: It's not the EDGE Lo-Pro, since one of the F.R. patents expired, Ibanez has essentially dropped their Lo-Pro version of the EDGE, and gone back to their original EDGE Trem design.
    1:55 Love Rabea, but he's been mistakenly thinking that it's individual coil-tap push/pull pots for each pickup, but it's: vol push/pull pot is the high pass filter [for both pickups]
    and the tone push/pull is the coil-tap for both pickups.

      +Pe Peroni A digital modeling amp with a good selection of presets and an HSS Strat would let you cover *almost* everything... Not nearly as fun as buying lots of tube amps and pedals and guitars though!

    • @Driftuner
      @Driftuner 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +quasarpuffs True, my "home-setup" right now is a Yamaha THR10 plugged into monitor speakers and an Ibanez AR325, which is probably one of the most versatile guitars ever. 2 humbuckers, 2 volumes, 2 tone pot and 2 tri-sound switching wich gives you 3 sounds pro pickup (hb, sc and parallel), so because you can switch the tri-sound independently per pickup, the "in the middle" setting is endless...you can get at least 15 different pickup configuration out of this guitar before you even touch the volume and tone knobs...and the THR is just killer when you know your way around it and plugged int bigger speakers...there isnt a single tone that this setup wont give me...and for home use you really dont need anything else..

    • @quasarpuffs
      @quasarpuffs 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Pe Peroni Yeah, Ibanez likes to have a lot of different tones in a single guitar. My S with humbuckers has a 5-way switch that does: neck pickup in series, neck pickup in parallel, both pickups, just the two inner coils, and just the bridge pickup. Its amazing how every setting sounds noticeably different, unlike a lot of other guitars.

    I've found time based effects sound better in the loop. a chorus is considered a time based effect. Also all time based loops or chains IMHO clean up nicely with a reverb at the end of the line or loop. I know ur going for a "Satch" sound but Gilmore has the reverb at the end.
    Another player is the MOJO or FRED PRO bridge pup has a spike in the mids that works well with the wah, giving it that open vowel sound. I'd give you high marks for getting the "Satch sound"!! Congrats!

    Joe's rig doesn't have a compressor or EQ. He had his JVM's modded to get the compression out. He barely touches the chorus pedal. The wah and a digital delay though are a must ( 500ms, one repeat). He used to get his gain from pedals, but lately he's been using the JVM gain channels, boosting them with a pedal. A distortion pedal will let you get away with a less expensive amp. If you're guitar has passive pickups and the amp has a midrange control, you'll be fine. Any guitar with a decent trem and passive PU's will work.

    Andertons looks awesome! All the local guitar shops near me (Guitar Center included) are really tiny compared to this. Theres one wall of mostly cheap asian made guitars and behind the counter a very small selection of USA Gibson, Fender and like 4 PRS guitars. Theres also like almost literally no pedal section besides used ones.

      As far as I know, Andertons is not a chain of stores like Guitar Center in America; it's only one big store in Guildford, just outside of London.

    initially got a JS100 to get a little shredder guitar .... was really nice, figured getting the JS1000 was in order, then, and actually preferred the 'ease to metal' of the JS100. So maybe the 'without busting the bank' part ends up with a 'just as good as' rig sometimes :)

    There's probably already been hundreds of people make this suggestion before me; Why not have two rigs for these videos, one being the affordable one and the other being the more expensive rig? Perhaps with the expensive rig just being a clip on the end of the video. As bonus footage or something. I'd really enjoy that and I'm sure other people would too!

    I purchased Joe Satriani signiture wah wah a number of years ago and the wah pot gave up after 2 weeks....I heard a lot of other people had that trouble....really disappointed as it cost £150....it did sound good once it was repaired

    I'd like to see you do these 'Sound like...' video's for under say 1200 quid! Though a great effort, £1500+ is a bit steep IMO...

    Joe used a cheap Rockman on most of the Surfin' album, which was a transistor pre-amp with a built in chorus. They're quite sought after today.

    I am assuming you obtained distortion via the amp, right? Would you mind sharing the setting of the amp? I happen to have that same amp. GREAT VIDEO BTW!
    Thanks!
