    I love fly fishing, but man that just looks so fun. Those fish are going nuts.

    Thats a cool video guys. The haunting marauding background sounds add an eerie element. The soundtrack of minnows that live in those waters.. Cheers!! thanks for sharing!!

      Cheers Clinton, no have never heard of them, will give them a google, pretty limited here in New Zealand with lure selections hence buying from the states, these fish are not too picky and will take just about anything to be honest! Thanks, Andrew

    One of my favorite fishing videos by far...beautiful fish!....this is why I won't be giving up spin fishing anytime soon. I fly fish mostly now, but there are times where I'm fishing for landlocked salmon and they refuse every fly I have, then a rainbow or brown trout pattern Rapala run by them just sets them off and they destroy it. I do the same setup with just one hook, but change my connections to either a split ring and mono or just mono to the hook.

    • @troutboynz
      @troutboynz  11 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comment, it's a fun and hugely successful method alright, and like you I'm mostly a fly fisherman of 30 years experience, I love the mixing of the two methods. Interesting on the mono connection instead oif split ring, will look into that, what is the main benefit it offers? Cheers, Andrew

    • @Matrimoney
      @Matrimoney 11 ปีที่แล้ว

      The mono connection doesn't make the hook stick to a certain side, and allows the hook to move around when the fish is shaking whereas the split ring only allows the hook to move certain ways, sometimes forcing it to pop out.

      Thanks Steve, glad you appreciate it, I sometimes get a bit of stick for spin fishing, but it's a hell of an effective, and fun method, fly fishing is my true passion, but I love the odd spin session too, usually outfishes fly too! Cheers, Andrew

    Main rod is a 2-6lb, 7 foot Daiwa Wilderness, it's a 3 piece rod, the Teloscopic one is a Shimano Telospin 1-4kg, used mainly if in the bush as fits in my fly rod tube, the reel is a Shimano Stradic 2500Ci4 carbon and the line is 5lb Powerpro braid in green with a 8lb leader around 3m in length. Only EVER use Rapala CD5 and CD7 in the Brown Trout pattern as a lure with one single Gamakatsu Lure hook on the rear (trebbles need to be banned in NZ IMO). Cheers, Andrew

    Just saw your video. Great action and it got me inspired with lures again.
    I used to be a mad lure fisherman and collector, then got hooked onto fly fishing since 1990 and still love it, particularly in NZ. But after seeing your video, i reckon I'll pack a spin rod on my next trip. Tight lines!

      @troutboynz  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks mate, I'm the same as you, 25 years fly fishing experience and guiding for many of those years (and still do!), but there is something inexplicably exciting about Rapala fishing! Really gets the blood pumping with those high-speed follows! Cheers, Andrew

      troutboynz Well your placed in one of the best places in the world for it (as you would know). I absolutely love NZ, and have spent many a times over there, only with a fly rod. I'm heading over there again later this year and it will be the first time I'll be taking a spin rod. It won't be my first rod of choice, but it will be in my backpack, so I use it on some of dark shadows in those deep pools.... ;) or as you mention in your comments... good to use on windy, wet and / or cloudy days.

      troutboynz Hi Andrew, You may already answered this question, but what size Gamakatzu single hooks do you use for CD5, CD7 & CD9 respectively?

    • @troutboynz
      @troutboynz  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pretty sure they are Gamakatsu Single Lure Hooks in #2. Seems a good size for both CD5 and CD7. Cheers

      troutboynz Hi... Nice one. How fast do you wind on the retrieve out of interest?
      I can't wait for exams to be over so that I can fish the upper reaches of the Mohaka for a few days :D great vids by the way

  • @troutboynz
    @troutboynz  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Cheers for the comment! We found our hookup rate actually improved over using trebles, but we also found that adjusting how we strike played a big part, instead of striking, rather just letting the tension come on - then lifting. The hooks are gamakatsu Single Lure Hooks in No.2 size - very, very good hooks. Andrew

  • @troutboynz
    @troutboynz  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi, thanks for the comments. The hook is always facing upwards, that's the benefit of the eye being in-line with the shank, it rides so well through snags - very seldom catches which is great! Hookup rate seems very good, better than trebbles on large fish for sure. With the split ring at the back, there's little movement for the hook to rotate off centre. Regards, Andrew

    Thanks very much, great to hear such feedback, would still like to get better soundtracks, but being a monetized channel it's a hard task! Hope to bring some even better footage over the winter season.
    I would honestly say spin is 'generally' more successful on most waterways, but it's hard to beat sight fishing with a fly rod as the ultimate challenge. Kind regards, Andrew

    @pecheurhautesavoie 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    great video. I am also a fisherman in rapala and I'd like to know what size of single hook you put on your Rapala CD05 and CD07.
    the fact of having only one hook behind does he not too unbalance the Rapala?
    thank you for sharing with us your other videos to rapala fishing.

  • @troutboynz
    @troutboynz  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi there, not at all, the single hook, with it's 90 degree eye acts like a keel and seems to improve the action if anything, they are fantastic. rom memory it is a #2, but will have a look to confirm, glad you enjoyed it, cheers!

  • @troutboynz
    @troutboynz  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Certainly a deadly method and I’m generally a fly fisherman 95% of the time, agree on the hooks, I use the singles all the time now, but they are hard to source here, although I did see them on eBay recently ex Japan. Have only tried on the CD5 and CD7, but a friend uses them with great success on CD9 and CD11 here, just the one on the end. Certainly has not effected the hookup rate over trebles, if anything has improved it with less damage as you say. Cheers, Andrew

  • @carbivore
    @carbivore 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Andrew,
    Awsome video! Lovin the rapala action. What rivers were you fishing?
    Also, where do you get your Gamakatsu Lure Hooks in size 2? I have been contemplating switching out my trebles for singles for a while and had already found the gamakatsus on ebay but the largest available is size 4.
    And why did you choose to go with such a large size compared to original size 7s that would have come on your rapalas?
    Cheers, Aaron

  • @MRSIKA500
    @MRSIKA500 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    To be more specific what way up you have the hook. If you have it facing up or down , I'm assuming that split ring at the back will only rotate so far , also interested in the terminal connection you use cheers mate

    What kind of nets are those? That's one of the coolest fishing inventions I've seen.
    Great channel. Damn.... you have a lot of vids. Cheers from Snake River country, Idaho.
    Any advice for reeling speed, weight, jigging, or other techniques for someone starting with rapalas?
    Are you pretty much always casting rapalas upstream?

    • @troutboynz
      @troutboynz  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheers buddy. The net is a McLeans Telescopic weigh net, made here in New Zealand, awesome piece of kit being extendable, really helps netting fish solo. I normally fish upstream and retrieve down with the current, mostly sot them first, but they don't like it coming on their nose, better a few feet off to the side, slow is best and only use a single hook on the tail so I don't snag up, regards, Andrew

    Using the Drift HD Ghost, it's a far better camera than the GoPro (used GoPro for a few years - never again!) for filming fishing as it is waterproof without the case, does not fog, lens rotates, battery lasts twice as long and best of all it does video tagging via the remote so you only capture the action you want instead of wading through hours of footage. Cheers

      Thanks Paddy, always a tricky one music for me, some like... some hate it, but it's what I can scrounge up that's royalty-free that's the hard part as my channel is monetized and deemed commercial, but point taken, will try and improve the soundtrack side of things, some of the recent clips maybe better. Was using a Daiwa Wilderness 3p. 7' and rated 1-3kg. The other rod I sometimes use when in the backcountry and in this clip is a Shimano Telospin (telescopic) rated 2-4kg and 6.6 long. None of them are blue though, the Daiwa is green and the Telospin is grey. Cheers

  • @matthwy1
    @matthwy1 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just curious. Do streamers not work as well with the trout in this case? Is there something about the lures (depth, weight, action, etc.) that makes them much more effective than streamers? Thanks for the video.

    • @troutboynz
      @troutboynz  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, yes, we have tried streamers many times, but just can't get the same result, I think it's a combination of spooking the fish by going above them and swinging the streamer down... they just always see you and spook due to the clear water no matter how far away you get and casting up, and stripping down also spooks them. The Rapala is just so damn effective and easy, especially on a crappy day when spotting is hard due to glare. I'm a fly fisherman, but its a very fun method to mix it up with and you can also cover 3x as much water over fly. Cheers Andrew

    • @troutboynz
      @troutboynz  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, correct. they are some form of Japanese lure clip, very light gauge wire, rated to about 20lb. They are very important IMO, as here when retrieving across shallow rocky rivers, the bib of the lure and the eye are always rubbing and bumping the rocks, this clip just puts that extra 20mm of space so the knot of the mono leader does not chafe and wear through when bumping rocks. I used to loose a lot of lures prior to using these clips, since - no issues at all! Cheers

      It depends really, lots of people will tell you that, but will have never fished the North Island, I live in the North and most of my videos are here, and in my find the trout fishing is far better, there is MUCH less angling pressure and more fish, the South however has larger fish. If mainly spin fishing, the South fishes well, for fly, I think the North is better, but many will disagree (that haven't fished it of course!) Either way it's a great country! Cheers

    • @giacobaziodelvento
      @giacobaziodelvento 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ok so probably having 10 days and coming from oversea thinking abt driving distances in the North Island seems more manageable to have chance fish more different spots. I think will plan the north probably faster to move around and great indeed of course! will check yr other videos also! Thanks again mate

I finally got some shipped to the states from an ebay seller and they have been fantastic. My daughter is a junior at Truman State University here in Missouri, USA and her school has a study abroad program with schools in both Australia and New Zealand. She decided on New Zealand and is in the process of arranging to study for a semester at one of your universities. (Not sure which one) It will probably be on the north island. My wife and I plan to visit her at some point during her stay and I am interested in setting up a fishing trip with you. She will be there for our spring semester, which I suppose is your fall semester, beginning around February. How can I contact you directly to discuss a trip for big browns on Rapalas early next year?

      +David Whitson Hi David, thanks for the comments. Great news for her, both fantastic countries to study in and well graded universities. It's also a fairly cheap process to skip between Australia and New Zealand for a holiday. You can send me a private message through TH-cam, however February will most likely be out for me, I will be in Australia for the most part of Feb. It is also probably the worst time of the year to fish Rapala's, April is the best IMO. But touch base closer to the time of your visit and we'll see if something can be arranged if I'm here. Cheers Andrew

      +troutboynz February is a bad time for me too, but April or May are pretty good. We still have to look at a lot of details before making a plan, but I will roughly pencil in April on our calendar. Not sure if we want to try to take in NZ and Austrailia or concentrate on seeing NZ thoroughly. Probably won't spend more than 10 days and I had trying to see too much in too little time.

      +David Whitson If I were to dedicate two days to fishing with you, which rivers/regions would you recommend? I want to locate them on the map so we can keep that in mind while planning the rest of the trip.

    the rapalas have a far better action the way they wiggle as they go past, trout usually cant resist, but when they do they will usually take a bladed spinner or fly. Also, where is this? not so many big fish in my local river

      i didnt know that , sonoma creek , is in rather bad shape these days , i understand both the napa river and sonoma creek had quite a population of both kings and steelies , someone i fished with on the russian told me they shipped a whole bunch of the russian river fish across the world , and theyve done extreemly well, i told someone that sonoma creek was actually a tributary of the russian but i was thinking of dry creek by mistake , ive only seen and fished sonoma creek where it dumps into sanpablo bay id go catch stripers ive never seen where it looks like it could hold salmonoids up in the hills of its headwaters i apprieciate any knowledge you can send , and any fishing updates since 2014 when i had to move back east to take care of my father, i really enjoyed watching the coho and steelhead spawning like crazy in west marin creeks out by lagunitas peace to you

    awesome video,its just a pity u use such strong line..the fish seem to barely fight,they just seem to get hauled in! you couldn't do that on 6lb or less!

    • @troutboynz
      @troutboynz  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Strong line? Were using 3lb or 5lb Power Pro Braid and 6lb leaders! The 3lb is one of the lightest braids available on the planet! The fights look short as I don't film the whole thing, just short snippets...

I like pink... video is 5 years old, your comment is irrelevant, look at some of my newer videos, maybe it has improved, your opinion doesn't count, music is like art... some hate it, some love it, so maybe you have bad musics taste in reality?... just saying "terrible music" is a silly comment... turn the music down then or look elsewhere, I don't really need to know your opinion.
