Fly Fishing New Zealand - 10 Rivers in 10 Days!

  • 10 days and 10 vastly different New Zealand rivers, everything from spring creeks to backcountry headwaters, lowland freestone to alpine tarns... even flicking flies in estuaries for sea-run trout.
    This documents just a fraction of the fish caught and most within a stones-throw from a sealed road, highlighting the superb and easily accesible fishing available in this beautiful land.
    Highlight fish for me was the very large estuary dwelling brown at 6.35 taken not 50m from the open ocean, it was a magnificent fish to start my 40th birthday with and took me to my backing on several occasions during the fight.
    Most fish taken on dry fly using 6wt gear during early April 2014. Filming and editing by Andrew Harding on the Drift Ghost S (head-cam) and iMovie. Anglers: Andrew Harding, Dan Thomas and later; Darryl Monk.

      You'll have a ball mate, campervan is the way to go, nothing beats having your home on your back at the end of a days fishing and Twizel is a magnificent area, you can even take a camper down to the Tekapo if you go real slowly - it's a bumpy rough road! Cheers, Andrew

    I've been going to Argentina for the sea trout for the last 7 years. Watching this film is tempting me away. The scenery and the fish are just unbelievable. Are there no small trout in your rivers?!

    • @troutboynz
      @troutboynz  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi David, definitely put NZ on your list! Scenary is breathtaking even for a local! There are rivers with small fish, but the majority of fish in the South Island and North Island would run 4-5lbs average for the sort of fishing I do, especially in the back-country rivers, where it's also relatively common to encounter fish of 7lbs+. Regards, Andrew

    Hi Guys. Wonderful to see your video i hope you can rewrite your info and inform people enjoying this video to understand Didymo and the importance of the "Check Clean and Dry". Which i hope that you guys practiced on your 10 rivers 10 Days.
    I see that heaps of people have asked info about where to fish so please let them know the importance of contamination of other rivers. cheers Wayne

    • @troutboynz
      @troutboynz  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutley, good point Wayne, we ALWAYS freeze boots (if near a camp-ground dep-freeze), poly-props, socks, nets etc. each night, or use recommended solution every night. Whilst not always praticle in a small campervan we take the effort to do it regardless, even on rivers not 'known' to have Didymo. Sadly I think we are in the minority... Andrew

    • @calthekiwi6239
      @calthekiwi6239 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're right, Wayne.
      Andrew, he has a point, wouldn't you say? It is no drag - no pun intended - cleaning your gear once you're fin for the day, on the bank. Hey, have a beer and a chinwag while you're doing it. CH

    • @calthekiwi6239
      @calthekiwi6239 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      CalTheKiwi ......obviously, I'm saying it for the wider audience, not having a go at you, of course. We just need the 'Work against Didymo' message more 'out there'. Glad you're doing your bit. By the way, glad you publish/credit the music soundtrack details. It's helpful, cheers.

    • @troutboynz
      @troutboynz  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      CalTheKiwi
      Absolutley, agree 100%. We freeze boots, nets, socks etc. where possible, as well as clean in solution EVERY night after fishing, nothing escapes cleaning, is it a pain? Yes, but I'd hate to see Didymo spread further, especially to the North Island, however I'm 100% certain it has been introduced here, just not taken luckily. Cheers

    Andrew, great video. Thanks for putting it up. Fantastic quality and great fishing. I just wondered what time of year this was. From the weather and the thermals it looks pretty early in the season? I also wondered if you were in the north or south island. Looking at the video I was reminded of the south (north West and Canterbury). I am just starting to plan another trip to NZ with the very first question being North or South? Andrew

    • @troutboynz
      @troutboynz  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks mate, correct on the South Island for this one and this is at the very end of the season in April, pretty cold for the best part wading, but one of the best times of the year for mayfly hatches as you can see and little angling pressure. But on the flip side, the North Island where I live, offers fishing to match most of the time, just not quite as scenic! Cheers Andrew

    Hi Andrew. Great videos! I'll be in NZ for 3 weeks starting at the end of the month and was wondering if you do any guilding? Also I saw 1 video where it looked like you have a weigh scale built into your net. I was wondering what kind of net you use. I look forward to hearing back from you. THX

      No, not guiding anymore sorry mate due to family and other work commitments, happy to reccomemded a guide depending on where you are heading though. The net is a McLeans weigh net, made here in NZ and with scales built in, very good quality piece of kit!

      Book yourself a campervan Ken and just go for it! Happy to give you a rough itinerary for success as we have been doing this for over 15 years now..,. the modern campervan's are total luxury, you could even... cough, cough..."take a woman!" Correct, iMovie, the latest version is amazing, very fast on import and even easier to use, suits me great. Cheers, Andrew

    Anothe great video! Been watching most of your stuff since booking my flights for this spring (your spring). 10 rivers in 10 days must have taken a lot of planning, I have only 14 days and am still wondering where to start! Any chance on some tips for planning?
    Cheers. Chris.

    • @troutboynz
      @troutboynz  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Chris C Thanks Chris, pretty veasy to do here to be honest, every watershed holds fish and is always in close proximity to another one. Grab a campervan, makes things so much easier! Which Island are you fishing North or South?

    • @chrisc4527
      @chrisc4527 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi,
      Just the South Island and probably not much north of Christchurch latitude. I love camping, and since there is just me, I have planned on tenting rather than camper vanning. I am booked for a few days with a guide at the start to help me find my feet, but after that, picking places (times and distances) is proving hard. Too much choice! I have been warned not to try to see to much in too short a time and risk spending all the trip on the road.
      With a different river each day, how long, and how far, did you travel between locations? Would you do it that way again?
      Thanks!
      Chris

    • @troutboynz
      @troutboynz  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Chris C Good advice hiring a guide and concentrating on one area. You MUST buy John Kent's Sout Island Fishing Guide, it's an excellent start point. We move around between East and West Coasts based on weather, one is usually fine while the other is not. Try Waimakariri, Arnold, Hurunui, Crooked, Bruce, Waiau, Hope, Maruia, Buller, Travers, Sabine, Wairau. Travel at night, frees up the days and little traffic round. Kent's guide will outline all rivers in an area you can fish in a day, spend a day on each river and learn it well - fish all tribs. Cheers

    Nice, but why the nets dude,Man up give them a chance. If you use a net you may as well hook them and run out into the middle and just scoop the up All of these fish could have had the hooks removed without taking them from the water,without a net

    • @troutboynz
      @troutboynz  9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      For fucks sake. You clearly have NO idea about fly fishing nor New Zealand trout! Good luck trying to tail an 8lb back country brown by hand! You do also realise a net minimises the stress to a fish, is easier to de-hook and also weigh before release? Please don't comment on something you know zero about, these aren't 12" tiddlers! And give them a chance??? What about the 4lb leader, tiny hooks and submerged hidden snags... perhaps why so many are lost... Idiot.
