    a) Interesting to see Simon Callow playing a thug. Nice contrast with his later roles as posh types, barristers etc, when he had made his mark.
    b) Robert Lindsays character reminded me of my days in the Merchant Navy. We had a 3rd Mate who was a Ted, but the MN rules on uniform were a bit easier going. He had put the officer stripes & buttons on a black drape, for his black trousers he had a pair of drainpipes with a pair of black brothel creepers. He had also kept his DA, so his full officers dress uniform was also full Teddy Boy gear with no compromise. He was also a good larrff and I can, almost, remember sinking many pleasant beers together on that ship.

    I like the contrast of Corporal Marsh being a bullying corporal in the hut and a seriously hen pecked husband at home, he's scared stiff of his wife.

    Tony Selby was magnificent as Corporal Marsh. It's a pity in later seasons they turned his character into a bit of a joke.

      I'll say it is! Too many of today's comedy shows struggle to make mark because they're trying to keep the P.C. brigade & 'Snowflakes' happy.

      The number plate is wrong - it would be silver letters on a black background, and typically 3 numbers then 3 letters.

    @36 hour pass, how come Jakey Smith's fellow teddy boys were not in the forces themselves?

    • @cookstorytime
      @cookstorytime 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @groovy scene Which in that case they would probably have been in the forces by then, possibly at the tail end Of the war.

    • @Corky341

      There were jobs that exempted you from NS. Farmers, miners and Merchant Seamen for example. But it's probably more accurate to say they needed and 'back story' for Jakey's story.

    Was National Service compulsory?

    • @cookstorytime
      @cookstorytime 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In answer to Caroline Lynch asking if national service was compulsory, it was compulsory from 1946 until it was scrapped in I believe about 1960. After the age of 18 young men were called up to spend about 2 years in the forces, some were except on medical grounds.

    Love the show. Bit of an inconsistency here, this episode is meant to happen 23 of March, but the next episode is portrayed as being Christmas time, nine months later. Considering basic training was I believe 8 or 12 weeks or whatever. Wouldn’t have picked it up but it must be my third time watching this show. Maybe some one can provide explanation.🇦🇺

    • @vordman
      @vordman 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It was common to do christmas-themed episodes of sitcoms back then. i noticed that too. I guess they thought no one would notice. Remember, back then there were no home video recorders. You saw something on broadcast and that was it.
