Hey all, I decided to go ahead and edit out the wolf quip. It was just supposed to be a quick comment, but I was getting a little fatigued on it being explained to me over and over again. It was my bad. Regardless, I do appreciate your comments. ♥️

(btw, this is probably out of your wheelhouse for this channel, but I was just thinking how I loved Angela Lansbury in Bedknobs and Broomsticks, and it made me wonder about an old thought I had when I was reassessing my lifelong obsessions (like Angela)... When Lily Tomlin came out...
Sorry this is rambling, but the bottom line was me wondering if Miss Lansbury is also gay but has just never felt the need to explore that since she's so much older in generation gaps.)
Wow, that was a long aside. Anyway, have always loved the channel and am so happy to see you up to 300k subscribers! ^_^ (I guess I could send this in Patreon, but I wanted to add to the algorithm here)

The side story about the librarian actor and her insurance wasn't a one off, either. Apparently Angela Lansbury frequently had her friends and colleagues on the show, particularly the ones who had had long careers but were waning in popularity as they aged. She has a long history in Hollywood and Broadway, so she was acquainted with basically everyone. I really enjoy knowing that she made a point of ensuring that quality lifelong actors continued to get work whenever she could.

That is, to the best of my knowledge and vision, FL-41 tint, a color that is used in people with photophobia. Given the murder rate of Cabit Cove I'm not surprised that they have a literal vampire around. Dude probably didn't even need to kill people himself, just nibbling a bit on the murder victim of the week in the City Morgue would be enough.
Also if Vampire Lore is to be believed than Baker/Borbey isn't dead, since the Stake through the heart is only supposed to fix a vampire in place until you can decapitate them.
So this guy isn't dead. *triumphant sound effect*

    • @tsubakiofmelancholy6297
      @tsubakiofmelancholy6297 2 ปีที่แล้ว +46

As a vampire...expert myself. A wooden stake will paralyze the vampire until removed. Which is why you must decapitate the vampire and burn the body, then spread the ashes. However, if the stake is made of silver, or at very least the tip is coated in silver it can be fatal to the vampire. Again decapitate and birn body then spread ashes. You do not want to run the risk of it coming back somehow and wanting revenge.

Madlyn Rhue had MS and was confined to a wheelchair by the mid-‘80s. It was very kind of Angela Lansbury to craft a role for her.
Rhue was truly stunning in her youth. She portrayed Lt. Marla McGivers in the Star Trek episode “Space Seed”, Khan’s would be lover. Just as an aside to Madlyn Rhue's part in this episode, she was suffering from multiple sclerosis at the time which left her confined to a wheelchair which explains why her character was also in a wheelchair. Aside from that sad little tid-bit, this episode really is bonkers. Like, the show tends to dabble in the supernatural and the occult from time to time but how insane would it have been if Jessica Fletcher had to face off against forces beyond her understanding and control? I mean, Diagnosis Murder had an episode involving a vampire and Walker, Texas Ranger featured episodes with skinwalkers, Satanic cult members, psychic children and mystical Buddhist monks.

    • @lyinar
      @lyinar 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

I think it manages to get away with the hints of the supernatural in this one because of how completely tangential it is to the actual murder mystery. By making the question of whether or not the photophobic guy with the lost Crane brother as a minion is actually a vampire completely unimportant to the plot, they can give a nudge and wink toward the possibility that he actually is in a way that they couldn't if it *did* actually matter.

I've got a LAUNDRY LIST of episodes that I'd love to hear your take on, and I mean an honest-to-God list:
-"The Murder of Sherlock Holmes", 1x01/02. Might as well review the two-parter where it all began, eh?
-"Hit, Run and Homicide", 1x03. Full-size RC cars, over a decade before MythBusters.
-"Death Casts a Spell", 1x11. Hypnosis and murder, oh my!
-"Widow, Weep for Me", 2x01. Jess hams it up in-character as a wealthy widow in an island resort to help solve a murder.
-"Jessica Behind Bars", 2x09. Jess helps defuse a riot in a women's prison and also solves two deaths along the way. Thrill-a-minute.
-"Trial by Error", 2x13. Basically, what if "Twelve Angry Men" had Jess, Thelma "Mama" Harper and Sisko's dad among the jury? IMO the finest episode of the series, and a MAGNIFICENT tour-de-force for Lansbury as Jess basically hemming in eleven other people.
-"Keep the Home Fries Burning", 2x14. Murder. A smarmy health inspector. Greasy-spoon diners. This one has it all.
-"Christopher Bundy: Died on Sunday", 2x19. Featuring Bert Convy in his second and final appearance on the show (his first was in 1x01-02, "The Murder of Sherlock Holmes"), this time as a jackass publisher who gets offed.
-"The Days Dwindle Down", 3x22. The episode is positioned as a retconning sequel to an old, obscure noir film, "Strange Bargain", down to getting the actors back to reprise their roles. Really interesting outline.
-"Showdown in Sasketchewan", 4x20 (blaze it!). How do you shake up a cowboy-themed murder plot? Set it in Canada, at Totally Not the Calgary Stampede!
-"Deadpan", 4x21. A really good caper involving a high-profile stage play and the murder of a critic.
-"J.B As In 'Jailbird' ", 5x01. Jess is framed for a politically-motivated murder...for her own good! A Michael Hagarty episode.
-"The Wearing of the Green", 5x06. Three words: White-Dwarf Starlet. Prepare for ham. And no, that's not a comment on anyone's height, skin or ethnicity.
-"Prediction: Murder", 5x08. A psychic's predictions come true to the letter, leading to murder.
-"Mirror, Mirror, on the Wall", 5x21/22. Two-parter that sees a rival mystery writer raise unholy hell for Jess...and poor old Hazlitt gets caught up.
-"The Szechuan Dragon", 6x21. What happens when you mix campy martial-arts farce with Jess's mysteries? This.
-"The Return of Preston Giles", 7x07. A very important character from the very first episode of the show returns, with consequences for Jess and himself.
-"Thicker than Water", 8x04. A sad episode involving Metzger's brother Wayne, the family's black sheep.
-"Incident in Lot #7", 8x13. Somebody gets murdered in the "Psycho" house at Universal Studios.
-"To the Last, I Will Grapple With Thee", 8x17. All I'mma say here is that it's hella Irish and breaks the formula.
-"The Mole", 9x03. Perhaps one of Jess's finest bluff jobs, busting a murderer in the process.
-"Final Curtain", 9x11. An acting troupe comes to Cabot Cove, murder happens...and perhaps the saddest conclusion to any MSW episode I've seen.
-"Killer Radio", 9x14. Jess has a stopover in a small town, and has to deal with an asshole shock-jock and murder in a radio station.
-"Murder at a Discount", 10x09. "Misblamed" doesn't even cover the half of this one. Jess gets sued because of unfortunate coincidence.
-"To Kill a Legend", 11x03. Another "Cabot Cove comes to grips with dirt on its town hero" episode, but this one's got a really good twist.
-"The Scent of Murder", 11x12. It's a botany murder! Perhaps the only non-Cabot Cove episode where Hazlitt joins Jess.
-"The Dream Team", 11x18. We've got a one-two-three-four punch of Jess, Grady, Metzger AND Hazlitt all taking active roles in this one.
I haven't seen ALL of the series as of yet, but the entire run, movies and all, getting added to the Roku Channel for free streaming sure makes this easier than buying the DVD set.
(EDIT 3/25/22: List revised. One entry removed, SEVERAL entries added as I've seen the majority of the series now)

This may be a weird thing because it’s something I happened to look into for writing purposes, but which wood you need for staking a vampire is actually quite varied! Ash was common in the Baltic states and Russia, hawthorn in Serbia. Aspen was very popular because it’s believed that Christ’s cross was made from aspen, and similarly any thorny plant is associated with Christ’s crown of thorns and considered to have power over vampires. However, at the end of the day, any local wood was effective because what are you supposed to do if you’re living out in rural wherever where there aren’t any aspen trees around in pre-fast transportation eras, and you’re pretty sure your neighbour’s gonna rise from the grave and drain your town dry? Ya gonna wait for to get aspen from somewhere else? No! Get whatever wood you’ve got and stake that mf! In fact, while using wood may stem from a belief that, to kill the undead, you cannot use something that has never been alive, metal tools and blades have also been used as stakes in what we now consider “vampire burials”, so wooden stakes may not even be necessary depending on your vampire lore!

He who is werewolf in life, shall become vampire in death.
This was a belief because to be a werewolf in the olden days it involved black magic and devil worship. And those who practiced such things were not allowed to be buried on hallowed ground.
Vampires were often believed to be caused because a body was not properly buried, like it wasn't buried on hallowed ground, it had no tombstone, it was never buried at all, that sort of thing.
The belief werewolves become vampires in death actually would explain why vampires can turn into wolves.

Based on those clips, he did not even wrap up the body when he hid it. It would not be long before that entire room smelled like a rotting corpse was hidden in the wall. The room would also have a serious fly infestation problem as the body decomposed. Also, as body tissues decompose, they liquify that would make a gooey and disgusting puddle all around the base of that wall. (Thanks forensic science courses in college for that bit of trivia)
It would have been a bit more realistic if the owner thought the old house has some horrible mold problem and maybe some animal got stuck inside the wall and died. Everyone who comes into the house complains that the room smells like death. The renovations are just to open the wall and deal with the growing smell and fly problem. But since the homeowner and his butler are always around the house, the murderer cannot find a good opportunity to safely remove the body without being caught during the day. Hence the murder of the homeowner and attempt to pin it on the crazy vampire hunter. Also, it would have been interesting to see the murderer getting increasingly desperate as the body decomposes and makes his efforts to keep it hidden more and more difficult.

Also the people in town around his castle call him a German word that I can’t remember the spelling of that is translated in the book as meaning either werewolf or vampire, but in reality just means werewolf. And with the wolf head symbol, if I’m remembering my vampire lore right, wolves used to be associated with vampires mostly the same way we view bats today. Vampires were believed to be able to transform into and control them and some other dangerous or nocturnal animals. While both vampires and werewolves have a lot of history behind them, most of the lore people first think about for them are really modern, within mostly the last century. Saw your post on TH-cam about this video being held hostage and I'm very happy to finally get to see it. I love a wacky episode of murder she wrote. The type that makes me wonder how they kept a straight face through all the nonsense.

Maybe your next MSW video could be on the saga of Harry Pierce (John Astin), who plays a recurring character, a Cabot Cove cop, for THREE whole episodes. Normally the murderer is some brand new character... so that's why the episode "Sticks & Stones" is such a shock!!!!

Great video as always. I will say as to ur ending question. If he and the mutant butler never left the house during the day because of the Photophobia the killer wouldn't have been able to move the body while working without extreme risk of exposure

I watched this when you posted it, but since youtube copyright claimed it I'm watching it three more times because they suck, and adding vampires to murder she wrote is amusing and I love the commentary and energy you bring to all your videos💙

YESS this one was bonkers I remembered hoping you'd talk about it when I binged it :D please please cover the one in Quebec (yknow, where French Canadians live) where for some reason the people have British accents lmao as a Canadian it's definitely the most surreal for me, maybe even more than vampires

Another fun look at a rather odd episode of a really fun series in general. Very good video and I'm going to echo what others have said about requesting a look into Columbo. Also, for cozy murder mysteries, Poirot with David Suchet is a good place to start.

It is always a good day when we get a video from our Mistress of Mystery, our Madam of Murder, our Maiden of the Macabre.
This was a fun episode. But I do agree with the comments. 18 months and the smell of a body never got out? Maybe the vampire did find the body and was using it as a snack over time? I dunno.

I was so excited to see a new MSW episode! This one was a reach for Jessica! The rope and hollow, ok Jessica 😂.
I also wanted to recommend another show to try, McMillian & Wife. I used to watch it all the time as a kid along side MSW and Columbo. It’s such a great quirky show. McMillian is the police commissioner and his wife is always butting in to solve crimes. One of my favorite things was that the wife was always so determined and stylish but every night slept in big tshirts. I know random, but I always loved that.

I really want to like this show but I can't seem to get through an episode without either falling asleep or wanting to throw the remote haha. So I appreciate your recaps and commentary. It's like watching it with a funny friend without having to actually watch it. Thank you!

A note on the wolf imagery on the vampire stuff, wolves actually have a long history in regards to vampires, with vampires turning into wolves being a long standing power from what I gather. The rivalry with werewolves is a relatively recent (but still old) addition to the grater monster lore, as it were. Wolves were initially linked to vampires both because of a wolf's percieved nobility while also being a feared predator mirroring the stately and charismatic nature of vampires charming their victims into isolation where they strike. ...of course now I'm imagining Dracula in wolf form rolling over on his back looking for belly rubs as a part of his hunting routine.

objection! vampires, in particular Bram Stoker's Dracula, can transform into wolves. werewolves are jealous little puppies. unless we are talking about stalking glitter creeps, in that case, misrepresenting native american culture of a specific tribe the author displayed no actual interest in, should not be tolerated. end of rant mode. I'm sorry. good episode.

Jacob isn't a werewolf, per se. The wolf is the totem of his tribe and they can shapeshift into wolves because of that
