  • Have you ever thought to yourself, is it possible to get stuck in a Zelda dungeon? Well then you're in luck, because in this video I'm going to answer that very question. I'm going to look at 4 Legend of Zelda dungeons and see if its possible to get permanently stuck in them. They are Ocarina of Time's Shadow Temple, Skyward Swords Lanayru Mining Facility, Links Awakening's Eagle Tower and Links Awakening's Angler's Tunnel.

    It's hard to appreciate it in the moment, but when you think about it, creating a puzzle system with so many keys and doors and avoiding softlocks is an extremely meticulous task. Props to Nintendo devs, because they seem to be very conscious of this.

      Meanwhile, (older) Pokémon games have a bunch of softlocks 😆
      There's a whole series by Pikasprey documenting how to perform them, and how to break free.

      A lot of those required deliberate effort though, such that you'd only see it if someone wanted that.
      The most amusing to me were the ones you can technically escape, but the expected time it will take is longer than beating the game many times over.

      In oracle of seasons, I mean it is possible to skip a couple of sections in certain dungeons by saving and quitting. Like once you go to a few rooms, you can save and quit, and skip some keys and stuff that way.

      @@qunt100 One of the dungeons in BS Ancient Stone Tablets has a novel design where the Boss room is right beside the entrance, but you have to jump down a deep hole to get the boss key and then make your way back up. The game doesn't have saving so you can't save and quit, but, from what I remember, it seems it completely went over their heads that you can just die to return to the entrance immediately.

      @Tomsonic41 probably could've but at the time I didn't realize it was a soft lock cuz the ball usually resets under other conditions so I just continued thru the dungeon and then saved, not knowing the ball was permanently stuck

      @@Tomsonic41 No because when you quit the game in LA you get given 3 options: Save & Continue, Save & Quit or Continue (without saving). So you can't actually quit the game without saving it. Mind you, I don't know what happens if you simply switch the power off and back on, I assume it doesn't save in that case and you can continue from the last save point.

      The original Links Awakening has so many glitches it’s actually very easy to soft lock. Specifically the non-DX version has a warp glitch where if you press select right as you transitions screen you and certain other elements will warp to the opposite end of the next screen. This can get you all sorts of places you’re not supposed to be yet… including one particular hole near the Eagle’s Tower that is filled with deep water and will put you into a death loop soft lock if you enter it without the flippers. One of my first ever runs was killed entirely by this soft lock because resetting just spawns you back into the cave… where you immediately start drowning again.

    So this actually DID happen to my dad on Master Quest on GameCube back in the day...due to a glitch. It was the spirit temple, the young Link section. My dad had the small key you're supposed to use to get to the room with the Iron Knuckle, to finish the child portion of the dungeon. He ended having trouble advancing to that room, went to the beginning of the dungeon, and repeatedly rolled into the jets of water. He ended up no-clipping past the jets of water into the adult section of the dungeon, using his only key, then was unable to complete the child portion of the dungeon, and absolutely boned his Master Quest playthrough. Granted it was a glitch, but damn, he got STUCK stuck. This was back before the days of TH-cam video walkthroughs, so we had to scrub written walkthroughs on old forums...this was easily in 2004/2005 lol.

    Funny thing about that Angler's Tunnel key, in the GB and GBC version of the game, it's possible to grab that key with your sword as it falls down the hole the first time you enter the room. I'm not sure if it's possible to leave the dungeon or reset the game to trigger the key to fall again, allowing you to grab it with your sword or not, however. If it is, this is no longer a permanently softlock situation. If not though, then yeah, you're SOL there.

    In Ocarina of Time's Fire Temple, it's possible to collect the first key, then perform a relatively easy jumpslash clip to pass through the hammer-locked barrier and use the key on the lower door in the entrance room instead of the upper door without having gotten the hammer, locking you out of being able to get the hammer without using significantly more complex and difficult glitches. This is probably the closest to a key-lock you'll get in Ocarina of Time.

    • @ghoulchan7525
      @ghoulchan7525 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +18

      This does require that you know about the fact you can clip through there. Which is either something you do on purpose since you know about it. And less likely you do it by accident

    • @AceZephyr1
      @AceZephyr1 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      @@ghoulchan7525 Of course, but that clip is much easier than any known method of collecting the hammer without unlocking the upper door in the first room (void warping, hovering from the left room, using SRM to unlock the door or get the hammer, or *arguably* putting it on B with BA). This kind of key-lock by necessity requires you to get to a state where you have at maximum one key but two potential doors to use it on, and in vanilla OoT, I think this is the closest you'll be able to get to that kind of scenario.

    There's another way to softlock Eagle's Tower that I triggered as a kid. The original GB release of Link's Awakening had a glitch where if you brought up the map with SELECT during a screen transition it would warp you to the other side of the screen. This enabled a bunch of sequence breaks and made it possible to get stuck in non-existant rooms with no doors.
    Another effect that I ran into is that it caused the iron ball in Eagle's tower to get trapped in one of those non-existent rooms. I must have wandered around for hours trying to find it, no dice. Had to restart the game.
    Fun little glitch you could pull off with the warp was getting multiple followers at once, which would either turn Marin into a chicken or a ghost based on the other follower.

    I know it's not permanent in the way you're looking for in this video, but I watched my older brother experience a painful softlock in Majora's Mask's Stone Tower Temple. On his way to the boss chamber, he tried to backflip over the rolling spikes, got hit, and pulled out his shield to reduce the damage. This ended up pushing him backward against the wall and he was permanently stuck to the rolling spikes, getting dragged back and forth with them while the shield sound and flash played rapidly. None of the buttons could do anything. You could pause the game to equip items, but none of them could actually be used since you were stuck in the shielding position.
    Anybody who's played Majora's Mask knows just how painful a softlock like this is in that game. It's not permanent, but you do have to start the entire dungeon over from the beginning, as well as redoing anything you did in that cycle, as there's no way to save and quit without playing the Song of Time or visiting an Owl Statue. And he was on his way to the boss, so you can imagine how upsetting it was having to redo the entire dungeon again.

    Can't say I've been stuck in a dungeon on a Zelda game however for Ocarina Of Time I did miss out on 2 Heart Pieces permanently!! The first one was a 10lbs fish at the fishing pond!! I glitched it so I could get the Golden Scale instead!! I left then went back in and caught a 12lbs only to recieve 20 rupees!! Later on I found out the fish has to be at least 8 or 9lbs for this to work and to still get the Heart Piece!! I guess after 10lbs the prize is flagged!?
    2nd time was digging with Dampe!! I was so impatient I kept going under the grave and coming back out hoping he'd dig up the Heart Piece!! Finally he did dig it up but I once again fell into the grave!! I tried again many hours after and several times after I said fuck it and just went on to finish the game!! Turns out once that Heart Piece is dug up it's flagged so it can't be dug up no more!!
    These were on separate files both files I ended it with 19 and 3 pieces!! While still grabbing everything else!! If it's a game I love I'll 100% it everytime I revisit it and I love Ocarina Of Time!!

    In Wind Waker GC, if you die during the fight against the 2 Darknuts in Hyrule Castle right before you head to Ganon's Tower, you respawn RIGHT at the start of the fight - with 3 hearts. The fight starts immediately as soon as you load, there is no way to escape it, and you don't have a chance to gather more hearts, potions, arrows etc. Even if you save/reset/load, the checkpoint remains at the start of the fight.
    Keep in mind these are the strongest enemies in the game, their standard attack does 1 heart, their charged attack does 2 hearts, and the arena you fight in is VERY small, and the outside perimeter is flames that damages you if you touch it. Granted it is still possible to beat them, but it was exceedingly difficult for my younger self. I had to literally replay the entire game because I couldn't pull it off. Which really sucks because it's right at the end.
    I have no idea if this was fixed in the remake but I have to imagine this was an oversight.

But basically if you bomb them and don't get their treasures they leave behind and leave the screen. One of them will disappear, and never give you the treasure again after that. There is also the infamous softlock in skyward sword on wii. Where you basically do the thunderdragon's song first, talk to that one goron. And then try to get the other 2 songs. And the game will be stuck in that state. And now, if you have skyward sword on wii, and you don't have the skyward sword update channel, you can't even download that anymore to fix it. Not entirely true. Aside from the downloadable Skyward Sword update channel Nintendo back in the day also allowed users with crappy or no internet access the options to mail in your Wii (and they'd patch it for you and they'd mail the Wii back) or you could mail in the bugged physical disc itself in exchange for a reprint/replacement physical disc in the mail where the glitch was patched on disc. Subsequent restocks in stores after the initial release were also the new patched physical disc. If you can track down and purchase one of those later printed discs where the glitch was patched you can salvage your save that way.

Come back in and go to the edge of platform, right to the edge. Jump to second level of the tower, run to where two torches are. Use Dins Fire and go in. Get key in basement, water you will have two keys. Go through door and go back to where you meet the Zora float to second level and use bomb to get 3rd key. Now there is one more key that is easy to find. The statue with the crystal in it mouth. Now you have four key. You now only need the key after the long shot is found. Okay, I honestly would like to know if this was just a 'me' thing, but in Master Quest on the Gamecube, not once, not twice, but 5 times I ended up running into a permalock in Bottom of the Well. Since there are 3 different paths to the 3 dead hands which all require keys, one is the map, another the compass, and one the lens of truth which is why you are there in the first place. My problem was in MQ that only some of the keys you could 'get' without serious trial and error. (One of them was on top of a series of invisible platforms that from what I could tell had no way to 'cheat' to actually make them visible, and if you fell you ended up in the basement and had to make a several minute long loop to get back up). And inevitably I would get enough keys to unlock one of the paths, and fought one of the dead hands, but every single time it was either the map or the compass (usually the compass). I never could find a feasible way to get every key without the eye of truth :/

    funny, there is a earlyer way in links awakening to get stuck, just by using keys in the wrong order in the swamp dungeon, where you need the chain chomp to enter. no wierd stuff needed, just opening the wrong door at the wrong time and your out of keys but have locked doors.

    the dx version of angler’s dungeon 5th key block can still be accessed without the flippers but requires a damage boosted roc’s feather jump… i’ve done this many times… however it’s NOT a permanent stuck since the dx version has the hidden “Doghouse World” glitch and as long as certain chests are unopened the player can obtain the flippers a different way…

    That damn rumor about soft locking the water temple made me reset the game 3 times. Turns out it was just that hidden room in the middle of the temple where the platform rises revealing a room. I strongly suspect that was the cause for most when it wasn't talked about much in the 3DS version and they had a cutscene showing where it is.

    I very nearly got the iron ball softlock once, it was resting on the very edge of a pit that I would fall in if I tried to pick it up. I eventually managed to pick it up tho

    Impressive how well thought out these dungeons are that you have to really try to get soft locked.

    Ugh, I remember jumping the water puddle without the flippers in Angler's Tunnel, and the despair that crept over me after I realized that my key to the flippers fell into the water that I couldn't swim in to get. Needless to say, I NEVER made that mistake again...

    In the second quest of Zelda 1, it is possible to get stuck behind locked doors in one dungeon. Doing this requires actively avoiding keys, and it is not permanent because you can still Game Over or Up+A.
