There is only one New York City and only one Liza Minnelli and America is lucky to have both.
That was the time when she was shining so bright. Full of energy and stage-presence. She deserves an EGOT.

She sang this better than anybody, Liza was a spectacular performer - I have to agree that this is the best version of it by Liza - even though I like her recorded soundtrack a lot this is delivered with incredible energy that somehow only Liza could muster -

I have to disagree with you Mona! She was actually better than her mom! As she was described Pure Raw Talent! Her mother was a child star but as she grew older she lost her sparkle where Liza just shone!
@@annek1226 I suggest you watch the Born in A Trunk sequence from A Star is Born or listen to Judy at Carnegie Hall 1961.The Trolley Song in Meet me in St Louis was done in one take as was Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe in The Harvey Girls. Judy was never just a child star that lost her sparkle, research her and you may realise.

I had the pleasure to see Liza perform in person in 1977 at the Stanley theater in downtown Pittsburgh. She performed on the same stage her mother performed a couple times in the past. Both ladies (Liza and Judy) were pure real talent that we will never see in our lifetimes again.
She was a great dancer too, when she was younger. Saw her live and met her some time in the '90s. What a woman, literally vibrating with energy (even off stage) and glowing with charisma xxx

I know that she paid her dues, and she was lucky enough to have the background...but this woman had the talent...it came naturally, or seemed so..and that's the key! No fake nothing, just her!
Ths is the way it's done. Forget all that lady Gaga and Adele and Jennifer Lopez mediocracy. This is a personality and energy and one of the best voices ever with nothing other then instruments behind her and a microphone in her hand and she brings the house down. And this is pure magic.
Kitty Viveen I don’t know about Jennifer Lopez, but both Lady Gaga and Adele have written and performed blood stirring anthems that have audiences rising to their feet in appreciation. Taking nothing at all from Liza Minnelli, she is a brilliant performer, but there is room for other talent and it too deserves recognition.

@@ka8mk Audiences stand up for anything these days. Just out of habit. And these 3 that you mention ( and centainly Jennifer Lopez), have all the works behind them to make it sound great. Liza had all at birth. You can not compare. These days, if anyone can sing 3 notes in tune everyone thinks that they are a genius. Well, just listen to this. Put one piano behind her and Liza will make it happen. And maybe, just maybe Adele could do that. But certainly not the other 2 you mention.

Yes, it was written for Liza when she starred in the Movie Musical "New York, New York", co-starring Robert DeNiro, in 1977. Sinatra kind of adopted it as his own, when he recorded it and it became a hit. Liza, of course, always gracious, and would do anything for her "Uncle Frank", was just as pleased that he made it a hit.....

I'm planning to put together a Retro Decade Revival Project. Our goal is to bring real entertainment, true talent, pure originality and diversity, old school and more back into the public mainstream, starting with the 1980s. Talent won't be mediocre anymore.

I think my favorite performance of "New York, New York" will forever be Liza singing it on "The Rosie O'Donnell Show", just a few days after 09/11. Admittedly her voice isn't at its strongest, but it's still damn good. And to have such a resilient woman performing her love letter to a city when it was seemingly at its most vulnerable, it gives a whole new context to the song. The love, the sorrow, the spirit are palpable.

Thank goodness for all the wonderful recordings we have to enjoy. Try and purchase The Judy Garland Show on DVD, it really does preserve her legacy in the most extraordinary way. As for the magical Liza, hopefully more and more of her filmed concerts will get released on modern physical media.

Utterly fantastic. That is what I call show stopping. To me, Liza IS New York. I've always thought she was a little underrated. Her voice is unique, her style is unique, though a bit like her mom.

Kander & Ebb wrote this for the movie "New York, New York," which starred Liza and Robert De Niro. If you've never seen it, it's worth watching. Great music, unique film. (And it's Liza and DeNiro, so what else do you need to know?) ps- I saw Liza at Carnegie Hall right around this time. Her whole show was like this. People went nuts. There were so many celebrities there to see her, too. She was brilliant -- she'd just cleaned herself up and was very healthy and in great form. I remember this specific arrangement very well, as I bought the live double album from the show and listened to it for year afterwards. (Liza at Carnegie Hall, from around 1986, I believe).
