To me he is the PERFECT dancer. His technique in EVERY dance style is perfect. He is the reason I became a dancer. Masculine, strong, passionate, impeccable technique, incredible style & energy. Perfection!!!!
@@Aria2990 The Imperial Russian Ballet School didn’t give him talent. He also studied in New York City with American Ballet Theatre and the New York City Ballet also in NYC. His talent and great training made him the dancer he is. 💯
This was when Baryshnikov was regarded as the world's greatest dancer, and justifiably so. Liza still had it as a performer, before her personal problems derailed her. We shall not see such likes again.
I was in class with him once David Howard was the teacher. He asked me what company I was with. We chatted a bit. I found him to be down to earth. Without any diva airs. Easy to talk to. Very memorable class and day. I’ll always remember
Baryschnikov's form IS perfection! My GOD his dance is divine. You can see the years of training and hard work to perfect his craft and although I adore Liza, she pales next to him. Not that she needs to be ashamed....... her performance is pure Broadway magic nonetheless. Baryschnikov is so gifted and talented but clearly disciplined and a perfectionist in his craft. Divine to watch!
Years ago, when "White Nights" was filmed, MB said he had to learn how to dance all over again; he had never done Modern/Jazz/Tap. He did it beautifully! The "pas de deux" he did with Gregory Hines was magnificent. Also coreographed, these 2 gents made their dance look totally spontaneous!
Two superb artists in their prime. Even though Liza could sing rings around Mikhail and he could dance rings around her that's not what happened here. Instead, each used their artistry to compliment the other, and in the process gave us a performance we're not likely to see the equal of anytime soon. Bravo!

Baryshnikov is the most gifted dancer I have ever seen on stage or screen - over the last century. Tbh, I always had a crush on Fred Astaire - I found his dancing so smooth, so crisp, so perfect… but I have to admit that while I’ve seen Astaire do numerous styles of dancing, I would never ever say that he remotely compares to Baryshnikov whereas, as far as I can tell, Misha can simply pick up any type of dancing that exists and he appears to do it to PERFECTION. I couldn’t say that he tap dances as well as Astaire but I imagine if he wanted to or felt like it he could. (And that’s just assuming he doesn’t actually have the advanced skill.) He certainly looked like he knew what he was doing in White Nights. ) Baryshnikov always blows me away!! 👏👏👏🥰🥰🥰
It’s really sad that Liza had so many demons. I understand demons. But I didn’t have that kind of talent to loose. I wish she had been able to conquer them!!
I KNOW there was little Baryshnikov could not do, and while I never saw Minnelli actually do classical ballet, I'm sure she had ballet training, and I KNOW there was little she could not do. What a team!!
It was easy to be wowed by Baryshnikov, because he was new and and younger (with amazing technique) but watching this, I'm amazed by Liza, who keeps up with him quite well...
Baryshnikov does so much WORK, and puts so much into it... and so much energy, charisma... gives so much happiness, it's amazing, I can't describe it. He is one of my idols, and it takes a lot for me to admire and love someone so much.
My friend, the late Verne Langdon worked on this show. He said that Liza was completely down to earth and friendly to each and every person on the set - knowing that they ALL played a part in the finished product. Not any air or "diva" behavior towards anyone.
I think being friendly and down to earth is part of the diva behaviour! Being mean and shady to other people without any reason is just bitchy (in a bad way) and not nice! Liza is a great diva!😍😍😍

Liza is great film and greater Broadway given in her genes from both parents but mostly her mother Judy Garland. Baryshnikov is class and thousands of years of Russian artistic genius through his ballet yet modern American assimilation gives fire he thrives in. Both are wonderful. How I miss the old TV specials and star variety shows which brought all of the worlds great into our living rooms continually throughout the years.
I think this is something that our generation will never experience at all. Thankfully TH-cam is a thing now so 30 year old me can watch these masterpiece performance.

I have remembered that I saw this tv show when I was a child, now I know why I love dancing, painting, singing... everything, It was because I saw Baryshnikov.
Two of the best dancers. Saw Baryshnikov dance the Prince in the Nutcracker on Christmas Day. Saw him again with the White Oaks Dance Project and was able to greet him/get autograph. No one has come near his perfection. And Liza, well, she was magnificent. Even her backup dancers couldnt perform like she did.
It has been said that he doesn't have the grace of Nureyev. Can't say I've noticed meself. The man is a dynamo. A thousand bravos Mr. B. Long may you live.
mark prescott, nah. Nureyev might be more technical but he doesn't have one-tenth of Baryshnikov's stage presence. Nureyev is just a brilliant ballet dancer. Baryshnikov is an ARTIST.
He makes everything look so effortless and it is incredibly difficult! He has a true talent from God there isn't many dancers that can even come in his league!

Baryshnikov is really singing with the perfect phrasing and rhythm- he must have practiced voice like crazy - well he always did things to the nth degree :) what an incredible and epic dancer he is! 🌹🌱 This is truly the piece d’resistance as a medley of show tunes! Ray Bolger was one of my favorite singer/dancers when I was a kid. Once in Love with Amy is one of the greatest bits in film. I am stupefied though - Baryshnikov dances here an absolutely perfect Ray Bolger! He really is a genius and works his head off to do it. I’m totally gobsmacked!

At the time this was taped, Liza & Misha were hanging out almost every night at Studio 54 along with Calvin Klein, Capote, Warhol, and Halston. All that drinking, drugs, smoking, and sex--and they were still able to get it together for this show ----aah the magic of youth! Dwight Hemion really knew how to produce a stunning TV special.

Baryshnikov was extremely agile and very balletic (of course). I don't know that every style of dance is well-served by having this incredibly precise and beautiful quality of movement, but it sure is a marvel to behold. Liza was clearly in her element here.
I think the opposite - imho, his balletic style and precision actually enhances the different styles. It may not fit tradition, but it sure is wondrous to behold.

M Baryshnikov is exceptional - Classic. But Liza (singer dancer actor) is more than able to hold her own on stage with this great (greatest?) male Ballet dancer of the 20th century. Liza had phenominal talent, versatility & presence!
Watching Baryshnikov explains the assignation, "simply the best." It's evident that every cell of his body is inhabited by the flow, discipline, strength, and flexibility of dance. "Just like butter."

PS...I love Baryshnikov and yes, there was something very, very special about him but there have been a few others who were considered GODs of the ballet in their day. Perhaps you've never seen them dance....try looking for Rudolph Nureyev here....or look up Vaslav Nijinsky! Even Alexander Godunov, a friend, fellow Bolshoi star and classmate of Misha's was a superb dancer...albeit a much larger man at 6'2" tall. You've probably not seen any of them or know who they are.
Kuklapolitan, Baryshnikov is more than just a great ballet dancer. He IS the movement itself. The pure metaphysics of the body, as Joseph Brodsky said. Nureyev was very "cold", even in the "joke dances", and even more so in ballet. Godunov was too "heavy". It is better to talk about Nijinsky as a founder of modern style of dancing, but his dance is not very relevant today. And Baryshnikov - this is for ages. He really is the best.
I adore how Baryshnikov paid homage to certain other dancers and styles I’m thinking Donald O’Connor for one, and yet he made it completely his own …..what an incredible artist perfection 👌👏

Perhaps you've never seen them dance....try looking for Rudolph Nureyev here....or look up Vaslav Nijinsky! Even Alexander Godunov, a friend, fellow Bolshoi star and classmate of Misha's was a superb dancer...albeit a much larger man at 6'2" tall. You've probably not seen any of them or know who they are.
Kuklapolitan, Baryshnikov is more than just a great ballet dancer. He IS the movement itself. The pure metaphysics of the body, as Joseph Brodsky said. Nureyev was very "cold", even in the "joke dances", and even more so in ballet. Godunov was too "heavy". It is better to talk about Nijinsky as a founder of modern style of dancing, but his dance is not very relevant today. And Baryshnikov - this is for ages. He really is the best.
Sorry, but there is no argument alive that can legitimize the idea that LIZA MINNELLI is NOT a legend. She of course is very much a legend.
awesome. I read somewhere that he was first inspired to dance by seeing Fred Astaire movies with his mom in Riga. He came full circle....
How appropriate as I feel like Fred Astaire had that same effortless, unlimited dancing talent too.
He reminds me more of Gene Kelly in his actual dancing. The athleticism and power.

I knew he could dance, but WOW!!!!!!!!! He can sing, too! If I got to meet him someday, I would be so very happy!
Met him in NYC after a show he was a bit quiet but did autographs.
