If you ever thought about doing a second channel for psychology of video games, might I recommend Psychonaughts, a game where you can hop into the minds of the characters and literally fight their demons, literally sort out their emotional baggage, with the levels and game mechanics being used to explain their psychology, Sasha Nein is very composed, so his mind is compressed to a cube that could launch memories and experiences out when that composer breaks, in Milla Vodello’s mind, it’s very bright and bubbly (literally), but in a little corner, you can see her trauma, and in the famous Milkman Conspiracy level, you go into the mind of a paranoid conspiracy theorist, trash cans take pictures of you when you aren’t looking, there are G-men pretending to be road crew workers or plumbers, and going into buildings put you in the perspective of hidden cameras, you could do an entire series JUST on the characters of the psychonaughts games
It is a game, rather than a movie, but a series on the many characters of Psychonaughts would be really cool, in the games, you can literally hop into the minds of the characters and see the physical representation of their inner world, where you can help them by literally sorting out emotional Baggage, and defeating their nightmares, there is enough amazing levels to make a full series of analysis videos for each character, from Milkman Conspiracy, to psi-king’s sensorium, that franchise is an untapped gold mine of content
I don't know if Alan is an anime(or a Speed Racer) fan, but I def saw it today If he is. I remember being a kid when Speed Racer was popular... and DAMN if the theme song didn't play in my head watching this film. Go Speed Racer, GO
What do you think about Kinds of Kindness? That is one big gaslighting and manipulation topic... oh no... three topics of mental abuse? and physical...
When I tell people Speed Racer is one of my all time films people don’t get it but Alan does…Alan does. The last race sequence is truly a spiritual experience
Everytime I tell someone speed racer is one of my all time favorites films people look at me sideways, but not one single person I've ever watched it with always ends up loving it
Alan crying at screaming, bright lights, and a car crossing the finish line is peak CT content. All of us understanding why he is crying (and probably why we ourselves are crying) is WHY WE WATCH MOVIES
Alan, I'd like to share a story with you. Speed Racer came out mother's day weekend. My mom grew up watching and enjoying Speed Racer. I'd seen the cartoon and didn't care for it. However, I knew the movie was coming out, so I decided to take my mom to see it; going to the movies was often an activity we enjoyed sharing together. It was opening weekend and the only, and I mean literally *only*, people in the theater were my mother, me, another mother, and her young son that I'd guess was approximately eight years old. They sat right next to us which miffed me a bit; the theater was empty they could've sat anywhere else. So, here I am about to watch a movie for which I have negative expectations... and I was ensorcelled *immediately*. The first race had me hooked. I was so utterly enchanted by the movie's visuals and story telling and writing that I was completely wrapped up in all of it, and it turns out that I wasn't the only one. During the final race of that movie, all four of us, in an otherwise completely empty movie theater, had the complete movie theater experience. It was like every moment carried the same weight as Captain American picking up Mjolnir on opening night. All four of us gasped and cried and clapped throughout the race. All four of us audibly wept during the moment of transcendence and during that final stretch, the moment you were talking about the score intermingling with the sound design, that moment of perfect cinema... all four of us literally jumped out of our theater seats and were screaming at the screen for Speed to cross the finish line; we were steam filled pipes with no release valve and to the point of breaking. When Speed defeats the other two racers and barrels into the checkered finish line... I do not have a means to convey the amount of energy and jubilation. I turned to that eight year old boy and he turned to me and we both had smiles on our faces and tears running down our cheeks. I can't begin to recall how many times he and I high fived. It was truly the best theater experience I've ever had in my entire life; me and my mom bonded with those two over that shared experience. I have shown Speed Racer to many, many friends and expressed my love for it. I have not shown it to a single person who has come close to feeling the way I do about it; most people finish the movie and say, "it was alright." I feel very validated seeing how much you care for the movie. Thank you, and I hope you enjoy imagining my mom and I parading around like idiots, standing up in the middle of a movie, with complete strangers. There are few things as wonderful as being truly moved by a story.
I know a lot people were disappointed because it wasn't faithful, but I lived how crazy this movie was. The style, the colors, the campyness. It made me happy. It is a guilty pleasure, for sure.
That final scene where Speed restarts the Mach 6, clear mind, ultra instinct, being in the zone, mindfulness, there all the same thing and when done well a scene like that becomes the greatest live-action anime movie moment of all time, and the only regret I have is that I never saw it in theaters.
I took my young son and saw it in the largest, loudest theater in our area. It was transcendent, we utterly loved it and have championed it since. It is with absolute pleasure we have seen appreciation of it grow over the last few years. It was Joy on film, it was and remains, in our opinion, the Wachowski's greatest achievement.
Seeing Alan's reaction to the end of this film is so rewarding for me as someone who's adored it since I was a child. My dad, who watched the original cartoon growing up, lost his job during the 2008 recession and I remember he let my brother and me skip school to watch Speed Racer in theaters with him. Even as a kid, I left the theater euphoric. I'm so glad this movie is finally getting praised--long overdue!
@ArianaChiarenza that's such a wonderful memory! I mean, not that he lost his job, obviously that really sucks. But what a great bonding experience with the theater!
A few years ago I brought this movie to a "guilty pleasure" movie night me and my friends were having. I felt like I needed to warn them about the cheesiness, the absolute disregard for anything resembling realism and the unending kaleidoscope of trippy colors and visuals. It's definitely not a "normal movie" By the end my friends just turned to me and asked "what's so guilty about this one?" That's when I realized I wasn't weird for being so attached to this movie, its emotional core is a universal experience and the final race hits everyone. I love this movie so much it's unreal
He's awesome. He absolutely nails pretty much everything he's ever been in. And his voice is like velvet - were it not for the hysterical giggles that result, his voice acting alone in Cabin Pressure could send me to sleep
I know this is a movies & therapy channel, but I have to say that the final race in Speed Racer is the peak of race design in movies. You see the sequence of the obstacles and scenes within the previous laps. The whole thing is a rule of three. You don't need to know the exact sequence to know that through each obstacle you're getting closer to the end each time we pass one. Each one is so distinct that you become familiar with it at a glance. And on the final lap you're blown away so many times so quickly that you can't even think about which ones are left but you know the end is getting closer with each one that passes. You know there's a limit and you've seen all of them before, in the same order. Perfect sequence, no notes. There is no single lap race sequence that comes anywhere close to it.
I don't care if this movie was almost universally panned by critics, it was my entire childhood. It's cheesy, but the stunning visually effects, vivid cinematography and slick editing make it unforgettable.
That's just it though. They brought a cartoon to life, and did so SPECTACULARLY. Filled with mad-cap fun, whimsey, and then layered drama on top of that for the adults to enjoy. I don't understand how the critics didn't get that.
It's basically a European art house movie dressed up as a summer blockbuster. The wachowskis were influenced by a lot of obscure avant-garde cinema, & you can see it in there
Mainstream critics have become so bitter and jaded toward pretty much every medium that they see something being genuinely positive and heartfelt and go "this is garbage, don't watch/read/play this." They can't stand that people want entertainment, not endless works that make a statement or are cynical toward life.
Movies like this that aren't scared and ashamed to show that humanity can be good, kind and a positive influence on others need to be celebrated, not bemoaned and put down ad "unrealistic" or "generic." I don't wanna live in a world where good doesn't get done because everyone believes the lie that people are selfish, greedy and cruel by nature.
All of this! It's good to learn that not everyone is perfect, but it's equally important to remember that it's okay and even awesome to be a genuinely good person with integrity.
Even past that. I love the movie showing that in the world of greed and cruelty, that shining light of hope through sheer force of positivity can prevail is the message we should be spreading
So many people buy into that narrative and it hurts. Thomas Hobbes had some useful idea but his notion of the ‘natural state’ is asinine. Humans exist and succeeded by living together in groups and working cooperatively to all survive better
I swear to God, I am one of the only people I know who absolutely loves this movie. I cry during the final race every single time. I watch it online. Thank you so much for doing this
So Speed Racer is oddly important to my family. My dad grew up on the old cartoon, my little brother watched the new cartoon, and we all watched this movie. Our dynamic was incredibly similar to pops, speed, and Rex as well, including the repeated storming out. Hell, I showed this once to my now fiance, and she went from eye rolling to crying at the end. Love this FILM.
This whole movie, specifically regarding the Racers vs. Royalton, reminds me of the quote from Peggy Carter's funeral: "Compromise where you can. But where you can't, don't. Even if everyone is telling you that something wrong is something right, even if the whole world is telling you to move; it is your duty to plant yourself like a tree, look them in the eye and say 'no. You move.'" (Also this episode is what's finally gonna compel me to become a patron because I've been requesting it for months and I need to see more of Alan validating my feelings about the movie. Thank you so much for making this one!)
That quote from Sharon Carter comes right from the comics, where Cap is talking to Spidey: i0.wp.com/voyagecomics.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Captain-America-no-you-move.jpg
It's not just over the top. It's not just way over the top. It's way over, over the top. It was so visually and auditorily overstimulating. Imagine being on the best, most thrilling, most brilliant, genius level designed, frightening but-still-enjoyable roller-coaster in the world. The experience of the roller coaster is perfectly designed to last 5 minutes, and that 5 minutes... chef's kiss. Now imagine being on that same roller coaster for over 2 hours. That is how I experienced this film. In IMAX. By the end, my eyes, my ears, they were exhausted. Maybe I'll try it again on a smaller screen.
When I left the theater after seeing for the first time? I quoted SEALAB 2021 to my friends who saw it with me: “It’s like a koala bear crapped a rainbow in my brain!”
I love to see people properly appreciate Speed Racer. Between this and the V for Vendetta movie I'd argue that the Wachowskis may be unmatched when it comes to their adaptions of comics. NOT because their adaptions are slavishly accurate, because they are absolutely not, but because they make smart choices about what to keep and what to change to still capture the heart of the original in a way suited to the medium of film.
They also have great skills/instincts for capturing and translating the visual style of a graphic novel. The framing, color, poses, dialogue, timing, etc. Think about the sequence on the roof in The Matrix, where Neo almost dodges the agent’s bullets, and then Trinity head-shots the agent while he’s distracted. You could take stills from that sequence, add word balloons, and it would read perfectly as a graphic novel.
@@SynchronizorVideos This makes SO much sense that it actually fixes the scene. I've been mocking Trinity for years, holding a gun to an AGENT'S head, saying "dodge this", and waiting several seconds to pull the trigger. He would indeed have dodged that. But when imagining it in comic form, panel by panel, it's suddenly a perfect moment. Knowing that they were trying to capture that feeling helps me get into exactly the right mindset to appreciate it for what it is, instead of chiding it for not being what I expected it to be. (It was good-natured chiding, mostly, but I still vastly prefer this) Also the bullet-time slowdowns make more sense now too.
Easily one of my favourite movies. Every little detail is thought of and appreciated. Heck Speed was going so fast in the finale that his tires are melting and you can see them dripping onto the finish line! Just a perfect movie. A perfect adaption. And a showcase of how live-action films can take anime aspects, such as speed lines and editing techniques, and make a movie even better. Just incredible.
A small detail, but when Pops tells Speed that he can come home at any time, despite not agreeing with his decision to leave, you can tell that he's thinking of when he told Rex to never return. He's learned from his past mistakes, which is good to note.
So refreshing to see the “you’re not my son/don’t ever come back” trope played straight, but then revisited as a lesson and growth moment for the characters. Usually that trope is included to try to ramp up the drama, but then everyone just makes up 20 minutes later, and there are no long-lasting effects. In Speed Racer, the film ends with Pops still believing he ruined his relationship with his oldest son, who then went on to die without his family to back him up. So that’s a mistake he’s never going to make again.
I absolutely adored this movie when it came out. When people criticize the graphics and the special effects being cheesy, I am like, "Have you seen the original Speed Racer cartoons? They are cheesy! That's the point!" Great movie!
This is a movie I tell people is in my top 5, but is actually my #1 so I can restrain myself from going on a tangent about just how incredible it is every time I bring it up.
I'm with Alan. I. FREAKING. LOVE. THIS. MOVIE. I literally screamed out loud when I saw the thumbnail. It is the BEST MOVIE. It baffles me that there are people who actively dislike this movie.
Like Alan, like this movie is in my Top 5 of all time, one of the greatests. I will always claim that this movie has one of the best opening 15 minutes of any film. In the first 5 minutes, we see the visual extremes this movie will carry for the rest of the watch time, the character's personalities and relationships, a TON of back story and set up to the dynamics. Personally, no other movie in my eyes, sets up the vibes as hard as this one. I remember being like 4 or 5 years old and watching the old reruns of the original cartoon on tv, this movie may not be a perfect adaptation, but it adapts the FEELING of the show, it emulates how I think I remember it, and for what its worth, I think it comes out so much stronger for that than if it was a "perfect" adaptation, its perfect in its own way.
@@TelekinesisStudios I’ve never seen this movie before, but everything about it seems like so much fun. This movie came out in 2008, when I was 2 years old. I only know the original animated series because it’s hailed as an iconic classic piece of anime in Japan, where I’m from. I haven’t seen the original series from 1967 either, but I want to see both now. Just because of your and Jono’s passion for this movie.
@@TelekinesisStudios YEP! I am just so happy to see so many people come back to this film, because saccharine film making can be so difficult to balance and keep feeling earnest. Part of why this movie works so hard its because the whole thing is so saturated and pumped to 11 that anything less than pure genuine love for the characters inside of their world, wouldn't be enough. Thanks so much for talking about the movie and for crying when I cry. When the red and white fills the screen at the end I find that I am usually in tears and holding my breath everytime, and right on cue every time, when the car lets out a sigh, so do I. I hope in the extended cut you talk about the speed lines and anime-inspired special effects.
Can I just say how utterly SEEN I feel seeing your reactions to and opinions of this movie? I found a DVD of this movie in a Blockbuster Sale bin before they closed almost two decades ago, and I figured 'hell, why not. Its like $5, itll be good for a laugh'. I brought it home, put it on my shelf and ignored it for two years. And then I watched it a and immediately realized that I loved this movie so intensely and more intimately than most other movies I've watched in my life. The incredible action scenes, the on point comedy & pacing, the genuine and beautiful dynamics of the Racer family, the transcendent film-making... and everytime I introduce this film to other people they always say 'how is this the first time I've watched this'? Thank you, Alan. Thank you for defending this genuine gem that Hollywood buried and that most folks just kinda forgot. I still well up to this day watching that scene. Thank you, Jonathan. Thank you for pointing out how beautiful and heartfelt and real the loving family dynamic is here. If I could become half the father that Pops Racer is, Ill be honored. You both rock 💕
I remember when Speed Racer came out, it was critically panned and a commercial failure. I decided to go see it on a whim just to assess the damage and have a laugh. It is still the only time I've ever cried in a movie theater.
I'm an amateur racer and I always feel emotional during the heart to heart with his mother and father and during the final scene. This is one of my favorite movies of all time as well. And was the first anime I had ever watched as a kid.
The people who say they didn't like this movie NEED to revisit it again and just find the unbridled joy of it being so, so, SO ALIVE. I watched it with my friends a few years ago, thinking it was going to be a little schlocky. Instead, I entered a world full of brightness, bombastic action, dreamlike insanity, and weirdly enough--hope. Two hours later I came out feeling the most energized and inspired to find similar joys in life again. We all loved it, and we were practically cheering and singing the theme song together by the end of the night. And what I'd give to witness Alan and Jono reacting to some of the vintage episodes of the original anime 😂😂 Speed was an absolute MENACE in every way that's delightful!
I genuinely love how unashamedly anime this movie is, it absolutely works to it's benefit even beyond the obvious importance of respecting the original material. The contrast between the absurdly hype and over the top action and the tender, gut wrenching family dynamics scenes is just A++.
When i was in college we used to call our positive psychology class "the Hippie class" for most of us it was cheesy knowledge but now that i finished i realized that is the branch of psychology which treats people as they are, as humans. Now i love it.
Wachowski Sisters, as always, way ahead of their time with this film. Will always remember seeing this in the theater as a kid and obsessing with it, even to this day as an adult
It's funny how a pair that are such horrible people in person somehow keep pumping out movies that rock. Even the movies that flopped like this and Jupiter still have such great moments.
Said before and will say it again. This will be remembered as one of the greatest live action anime adaptations of all time. The poses, frames, and emotional output just purely capture the vibe. It gives me hope for a Steel Ball Run movie some day.
My dad grew up watching the cartoon. We watched the entire series together before the movie came out. The theater wasn't very full because of the poor critic ratings... we loved it. We had no problems. The second it came out on dvd, he bought it. I can't count how many times we've seen the movie. The end of the Grand Prix is *chef kiss* Also, the cast is perfect.
The thing that I've noticed a lot of people missed about this movie is that it isn't only a great film shot precisely and worked on with passion, it's not only a speed racer movie, it's also a Hot Wheels movie. The tracks and the cars, and even the emotion. It reminds me a lot about acceleracers. Great directors, great action, fantastic visuals, an homage to both speed racer and Hot Wheels. This movie has so much to offer, and when I first saw it in theaters with only me and my date seated (sadly enough), I felt exactly what Allen did throughout this whole movie and even more so at the ending. Years later I'm so happy it's getting the recognition it deserved. Speed racer the move was ahead of its time.
I've always loved the friendship between these two. And yet, in this one you can see exactly the moment when Alan shoots Jono straight through the heart, when he tells him "I've been so proud of you before" and Jono just freezes for a sec and then closes his eyes and let's it in. And I think that's absolutely beautiful. CT is wonderful, has always been. But to let us share a bit of the true marvel and miracle that your friendship is... That's something else. Thank you, thank you so much for sharing a tiny spark of that miracle with us.
I bought Speed Racer as a final purchase as Blockbuster was going out of business. I nabbed it for $3, but i'd go back in time and pay $1,000 for how much joy this movie has brought me. I showed it to everyone I knew in college. I make my wife and kids watch it annually. It truly is one of the best films ever made and the ending closes the film so perfectly that there truly is nothing left to be asked. This movie does what it was supposed to do, and it does it without asking for anything from us except to enjoy.
This is similar to how I got it. My roommate and I were looking for a "bad movie" to make fun of while watching and were blown away. Like 2 days later Blockbuster announced bankruptcy... so I just never took it back >.>
This is, truly, one of the best films of all-time. I will die on this hill. Speed Racer sind Liebchen. (I know that it doesn't translate right. Just keeping it in format with the line from the movie).
This movie holds a special place in ny heart. I went to see this with my dad when i was 12. My mom and my sister were on one of those all day fieldntrips, so it was just me and him spending the day together, and i was stoked. Now,he didnt like it because he's a huge fan of the original show and a bit of a purist. But i remember watching this in awe of the visuals, it was hypnotizing. Despite the fact that i spent the next two hours in a TGI Fridays listening to my dad lament over the ruin of his childhood show, its still my favorite memory of him 😂
I love how this movie has gone from being a laughing stock turkey (at the time it really was viewed this way) to being properly loved and appreciated, it really is an incredible film.
Never understood the hate for this movie, its such a beautifully done movie and pays the best homage to the original cartoon. Favorite scene by far is when Speed refires the car and hes flying through the pack and you get the montage of characters, always loved the line "It doesn't matter if racing never changes. What matters is if we let racing change us.", and the part that always tugs at my heart strings is when they do that flashback and its Speed and Pops watching the race and Pops is talking about how it "just clicked". My dad and I, when I was growing up, we never saw eye to eye on basically anything, still don't, but the one thing we always enjoyed together was racing whether it was NASCAR or IndyCar, on TV or in-person, we always took time to watch a race together and thats something I'll always cherish with my dad.
The final race is one of the GREATEST moments I ever witnessed on the big screen and I'd give anything to witness it again. Not only is the story great but the atmosphere is UNAPOLOGETICALLY anime and I will always love it for that. SUPER happy to see someone appreciate Speed Racer as much as I do. It's still my favorite live action adaptation.
Alan, bro, I'm right there with you. That final scene where he wins the race breaks me. Such a masterpiece. It's in my top five, as well. Glad you two finally did this movie. I was crying there with you.
That race scene convinced me to watch this thing when I have the time. Thanks Allan and Jono! I always love watching how passionate you are with the things you love
This movie is also one of my top 5. It makes me happy to see that others love it as much as I do. I think one of my favorite movie making moments is the scene where Speed, X, and Trixie are on the S curves after the reveal that she's the third driver and the camera and effects transitions between the three having the conversation. Its so smooth, they are still acting out going around the corners cause you can see the wheels and the cars as they're popping back and forth. Incredible. This also leads to one of my favorite "combat" scenes where Snake puts his wheel in Trixie's face and Speed absolutely dumpsters him with what I can only describe as righteous fury. Its funny, thinking about it, obviously noone dies, but very few corrupt drivers' vehicles survive an encounter with Speed Racer on the track. Speed almost makes a point of it, to trash anyone's vehicle who's actively trying to crash him out. Other drivers, he'll dodge, jump over, etc. But the best example is the final two. He might've just been able to blaze past them, but he made SURE they were gonna DNF that Grand Prix. He's almost elemental, with the way hes a hurricane on four wheels that leaves corrupt drivers in their bubble balls in his wake.
I'm sending this video to my film professor because he is a Speed Racer: Perfect Film DENIER. I bring up this movie in our filmmaking classes all the time partially to annoy him as a joke but also because I genuinely think there are so many perfect examples of different masterclass applications of film techniques and stylistic choices. I absolutely agree that this is one of the best movies of all time and it's in my top 5 as well. I am determined to change this 50 year old man's mind and damn it if I don't at least make him doubt his wrong opinions. 😤
@@Matt42MSGNot compatible my ass. If you don't like the style, thats fine. But to say it doesnt work is completely different. Out of curiosity, what is it about the effects you dont think works
@@izzyj.1079 I thought I explained: it's a sort of Uncanny Valley effect, where the ultraclean environments and saturated pure colors clash with the existence of live-action actors. It doesn't create the sense that the world we're watching could exist even on its own terms. People were blown away by the spaceships in *Star Wars* because they were grungy and looked like real, used objects.
@@Matt42MSG That sounds like a suspension of disbelief problem. It's a live-action adaptation of a 60s anime, why would you expect the effects to look realistic? Trying to do so would just undermine its adherence to the source material. On the contrary, the current effects stand way the hell out from other live action films. Star Wars, by contrast, is trying to sell a world where space fascism reigns supreme, and the heroes are fighting with limited scavanged resources from backwater worlds; it wouldn't make sense for that world to be clean. And the places that do, liek the Death Star, are pretty clean and synthetic.
@@izzyj.1079 That's the point: the actors look very realistic. They're in a very unrealistic-looking world. The mismatch interferes with immersion, both for me and it seems for many others.
I grew up in Puerto Rico in my grandma’s house, she didn’t have cable, and I remember watching Speed Racer as a kid. When I saw this movie I was BLOWN AWAY!! People complaining about how “unrealistic” it is clearly didn’t watch the original cartoon. It’s wacky and the directors for this film leaned into the anime aspect to infinity & beyond!! I still get nostalgic and tear up every time. I caught all the references to the cartoon like the same sound effects and the car gadgets.
I agree with Alan, Speed Racer is a top 5 movie! Another thing I’d add for a characteristic is boldness. During the final race, Speed is thinking of what Royalton was saying, but not in a negative way. Yes, Royalton may be right about racing being rigged but, Speed is believing that it doesn’t matter. Speed loves racing, always has always will. He’s boldly saying I love what I do and I don’t care if others use racing for profit or gain. No one will tell me if I win or lose, I will race because I love it.
literally my most favorite movie OF ALL TIME!!!! thank you guys so so so much for going over this movie and its messages. no one can ever tell me that this movie is bad this movie is absolutely incredible (this movie also awakened my love for cars and engineering lmao)
Alan, I am so glad I have found someone who loves this movie as much as I do. Speed Racer is so good. The Storytelling and Visuals are so good. This movie follows the heart of the original show. The level of detail not only in the acting but also in the costumes and the CGI is amazing
Couldn't agree more! I was never a fan of this particular anime, but I immediately LOVED this movie. It's profoundly clear that this was a passion project and a love letter, not some project the Wachowskis were handed or took on as a lucrative prospect only to crank out garbage. They respected the crap out of this source material, and it really, REALLY shows. Heart and soul was put into this. The climax still gives me goosebumps. And the credits song is still SO dang fun.
I watch Speed Racer every couple of years. I have always thought of it as a guilty pleasure. Glad to hear from a movie creation point of view I am not crazy.
Speed Racer will and forever be my all time favorite movie. We had no idea how good this movie actually was when it came out, but I'm glad we have two people who see it for what it is: A Cinematic, Emotional Masterpiece!
I know when this movie came out, so many people disliked it. However, I grew up watching the cartoon, and this movie is so much like the cartoon. Best cast, best effects, best soundtrack, best directing. This is as anime as any amine cartoon.
I love seeing Alan’s love and passion for films running out of he’s eyes. And at the end how he talks about it well #cryingwithAlan. Thank you for sharing your passion with us, that is such a precious gift you give us all and you have given it freely ❤
I can't tell you how great it feels to see someone who loves this movie as much as I do. I grew up on the cartoons and this movie brought it to life perfectly. Best cartoon turned into live action period. Fight me.
This was my comfort movie during the darkest time in my life around 2008. For a few years Id get home from the graveyard shift i worked, drink some whiskey or eat oreos and watch this every morning until i fell asleep. I worked 10 hours a day plus it being graveyard shift made it nearly impossible to manage friends, and I was also ostracized from my family for being a lesbian. Ive been afraid to rewatch this over the last decade because of how intertwined it was with my depression back then. Thank you for reminding me why I originally loved Speed Racer and also explaining how it comforted me back then. Keep up the amazing work guys 💜
Alan, i couldn't agree more!! Seriously, as a film of finding your values, living your truth and getting to see what real family support looks like....this was an incredibly powerful film for me. Not to mention the filmmaking quality, the eye candy, the incredible sense of immersion as a rally car racer and the fecking kick*ss remake of the speed racer song....sigh....chef's kiss heaven of a film!! Edit: It was films like these that let me know that rational humans could exist. Even if was in some dream fantasy world like Speed Racer.
YES! Finally reacted to Speed Racer! I feel I love this movie as much as Alan does. I can't count how many times I rewatched this film. I'll never get sick of it. Its so immersive even though it looks cartoony. And that finale!?Ugh! *Chef's Kiss* ABSOLUTE CINEMA!
YES!!! I LOVE SPEED RACER!! I actually cosplayed as this version's Speed Racer for a comic con the one year, and yes, absolutely NO ONE knew who tf I was 😂
I’ve managed to convince a good few people to watch this movie and I’m convinced they did largely, possibly only, because they could tell how genuinely I am in love with this film. It is so god damn genius in my book and there is nothing out there like it. Most left very surprised and happy! It’s not for everyone, but it nails everything it sets out to do and it’s beautiful for it.
What incredible timing. I had never actually seen this movie before, but last weekend--literally two days ago--my best friend was in the mood to re-watch it, and he asked me if I wanted to come over and join him. I'm so glad I did; what an underrated gem this turned out to be. Pops ended up being my favorite character, not because he was played by John Goodman--though that always helps--but for exactly that scene in the living room with Speed. He could have remained the overbearing "what I say, goes" type, but instead he learned from his mistake and really showed up for Speed. The character growth he displayed and the positive, healthy family dynamic he modeled were inspiring. Great film, great character.
The whole reason that I like this movie is that the story itself is so human. Two talented wildly crazy kids, parents who don't always agree with their kids choices and actions and make mistakes and then own up to those mistakes and try to fix them where they can. And the fact that not all choices can be taken back. Rex doesn't take the obviously tempting choice to reunite with his family. And what I like about the scene at the Grand Prix where Speed is stalled out is it shows that even with all his talent and skill he doesn't automatically know how to fix the car and his dad does showing that there's still things that Speed has to learn and situations that he hasn't encountered yet. You also just absolutely feel what both sides are fighting over Speed is fighting for the art that is racing Royalton is fighting for the money that is in racing. I can't ever watch the last bit of the Grand Prix race without feeling choked up and emotional.
This movie is one of, if not my FAVORITE of all time. I remember my first day of school after moving to America, my parents took me to class and I had a Spider-Man backpack on, and a bright yellow nametag with some english letters I didn't quite fully know how to read yet. In my hand was a Speed Racer lunchbox with Speed in the Mach 6 from the finale. I remember how vivid the colors of that lunchbox were and everytime I looked at the image of Speed I would recall how much I loved watching this movie. Movies have always been this comforting existence in my life that I've relied on to get through everything. I can't say how much this channel really means to me, being able to look back at my favorite movies with the both of you every week has been such a privilege.
YES! This is hands down my favorite live action film to date. Everything about it just makes me feel like can do anything. It’s part of why I love racing in general and why I tell people that what I enjoy is not for the money. I agree with Alan so much about this movie; I was even getting completely immersed into the Grand Prix while at work. Thank you guys for going over it. Hope you guys are having a great day!
Speed Racer is literally my favorite movie of all time. When I was younger I took the DVD everywhere in my bumblebee backpack😂😂. To this day it still gives me good, happy, warm, and fuzzy feelings.
Speed Racer is also in my top five favorite films! It is my go-to movie when I just want to relax and have a great time. I have seen it more times than I can count. Such a masterful piece of work. This is how you do a live-action anime.
I agree 1000000000000.9% with Alan. This one of my Favourite movies of all time!! After watching this, I am going dig out my DVD, pop it in my 360, grab my son and watch matchbox cars scenes of my childhood (and his, he's 11) come to life!! My husband doesn't get it, but my son and I ADORE IT!!!! Then we play racing games afterwords!!! BEST ANIME TO REAL LIFE MOVIE EVER!!! It is my #4 movie of all time, before "The Princess Bride" and after the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy... Dear lord, ssssooooo underrated it's not funny! So glad someone else can feel "Speed Racer"
When I was in high School I was teased constantly by classmates, teachers, and family members for loving this film. To this day, even though I quote it weekly to my boys, I call it my guilty pleasure movie not my favorite... You made my day by covering it and Allen admitting it's one of his top 5 movies! Thank you for showcasing it 😊
This was an incredibly cathartic episode for me, not just for the discussion on positive psychology in the film and reflected in the Racer family, but also for watching Alan react exactly as I have watching Speed Racer, which is also one of my all time favorite movies. To see another person share the exact same emotional resonance I have for this movie has done wonders for me today. Thank you for this episode, from the bottom of my heart.
OMG! I'm so in love with you, guys. Ever since I found this channel a few weeks here it has been a "Let's cry a little" time. You have so much passion: Alan with your crying and your speeches about the beauty of the art, Jono with your history and your experience with psychology, but both of you with your wisdom and this will to give us some of this insights about the beauty of love, of life, of everything... SO MUCH BEAUTIFUL, and powerful! I am profoundly grateful to have meet you here, guys. And in just some weeks you have become one of my favorite channels here of my life. TOP 5, just like this Speed Racer movie is to Alan and me.
Man. I really needed this today, for the same reasons as a lot of you guys. It's times like these we gotta hold onto what's good in our lives. Thanks, guys.

Would it be possible for you guys to react to the 1980 film Ordinary People and comment on the performance by Judd Hirsch as Dr. Berger?
I get it too. It’s one of my favourite. Some people just don’t get it and I feel bad for them. They are missing a spark.
Everytime I tell someone speed racer is one of my all time favorites films people look at me sideways, but not one single person I've ever watched it with always ends up loving it
Personally love "The Top" eurobeat edit. Just feels so good.
Alan crying at screaming, bright lights, and a car crossing the finish line is peak CT content. All of us understanding why he is crying (and probably why we ourselves are crying) is WHY WE WATCH MOVIES
Criminally underrated film, and the positivity is almost as explosive as the colors.
It's SO wholesome and good.
YES! YES! YES! I will ALWAYS love this movie!! 😁
One of my favorite movies to watch on a whim
it's crazy that people said for the longest time live action anime adaptations couldn't be done, yet this masterpiece has been here all along
@@shinkamui RIGHT?! I've been so influence and inspired by this movie! I must pay homage to it someday!
Thank you for sharing your story 🥹
Yes! Such a joyful moment
this was a beautiful story, thank you for sharing🙏🙏🙏
I know a lot people were disappointed because it wasn't faithful, but I lived how crazy this movie was. The style, the colors, the campyness. It made me happy. It is a guilty pleasure, for sure.
Isnt the original speed races a guncrazed psycopath
i feel no guilt enjoying this movie
“It wasn’t faithful”?? This is probably the single most faithful live action anime project pre-One Piece.
@@ThePonderer I guess that might be untrue. I just know a lot of the people who were fans of the original were upset. I love it, myself!
It sure seemed faithful to me!
It's definitely not a "normal movie"
By the end my friends just turned to me and asked "what's so guilty about this one?" That's when I realized I wasn't weird for being so attached to this movie, its emotional core is a universal experience and the final race hits everyone. I love this movie so much it's unreal
Those are what you call true friends.
Roger Allam dared to ask the question, "How can I do Tim Curry, but more camp?", and I'm here for it!
He's awesome. He absolutely nails pretty much everything he's ever been in. And his voice is like velvet - were it not for the hysterical giggles that result, his voice acting alone in Cabin Pressure could send me to sleep
He is fantastic in Cabin Pressure.
I was reminded of Christopher Hitchens
That was almost 100% my thought as well. He is totally channeling Tim Curry and I love it.
He acted the crap out of this role, I loved him. 😂
Love this!
I don't care if this movie was almost universally panned by critics, it was my entire childhood. It's cheesy, but the stunning visually effects, vivid cinematography and slick editing make it unforgettable.
Me too man! I want to pay homage to it someday!! 😁
The wachowskis were influenced by a lot of obscure avant-garde cinema, & you can see it in there
@@patrickt.6492 It's so unique and distinctive here. 😁
Mainstream critics have become so bitter and jaded toward pretty much every medium that they see something being genuinely positive and heartfelt and go "this is garbage, don't watch/read/play this." They can't stand that people want entertainment, not endless works that make a statement or are cynical toward life.
Movies like this that aren't scared and ashamed to show that humanity can be good, kind and a positive influence on others need to be celebrated, not bemoaned and put down ad "unrealistic" or "generic." I don't wanna live in a world where good doesn't get done because everyone believes the lie that people are selfish, greedy and cruel by nature.
this!
Thank you so much for doing this
Now you aren't alone. I friggin love this movie! 😁😍
we are thousands! maybe even tens of thousand! I mean I haven't researched it in any way, but probably?
So happy to find like-minded people on this one 🙏
I’ll be watching it after I finish this video
Same. I'm tearing up just seeing that scene again
You move.'"
(Also this episode is what's finally gonna compel me to become a patron because I've been requesting it for months and I need to see more of Alan validating my feelings about the movie. Thank you so much for making this one!)
That quote from Sharon Carter comes right from the comics, where Cap is talking to Spidey:
i0.wp.com/voyagecomics.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Captain-America-no-you-move.jpg
Great point!
@@SynchronizorVideos
Bound also looks like a graphic novel
@@SynchronizorVideos This makes SO much sense that it actually fixes the scene. I've been mocking Trinity for years, holding a gun to an AGENT'S head, saying "dodge this", and waiting several seconds to pull the trigger. He would indeed have dodged that. But when imagining it in comic form, panel by panel, it's suddenly a perfect moment. Knowing that they were trying to capture that feeling helps me get into exactly the right mindset to appreciate it for what it is, instead of chiding it for not being what I expected it to be. (It was good-natured chiding, mostly, but I still vastly prefer this)
Also the bullet-time slowdowns make more sense now too.
Yes! That detail's stuck with me since seeing it in theaters.
In no way is that a small detail. It's literally one of the two major points of the scene existing.
That's not a "small detail" that's literally the entire point lol
The largest detail of all time, but okay.
SAME, I took a screenshot and sent it to my wife with a "Finally!!!"
Well said! And thanks for watching. :)
Did we just become BEST FRIENDS!!!!??? (Alan here, btw)
The opening scene literally teaches you a new language of film making and how to watch this movie.
We're so glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching! 😊
Not the movie I'd thought I'd see y'all cover but I'm glad
It's one of Alan's favorites!!
ME TOO!! 😊
Royalton’s monologue is one of my favorite villain speeches in film.

I needed this today. Thank you. I love Speed Race Movie!
You're so welcome!

Heck yeah!
My dad grew up watching the cartoon. We watched the entire series together before the movie came out. The theater wasn't very full because of the poor critic ratings... we loved it. We had no problems. The second it came out on dvd, he bought it. I can't count how many times we've seen the movie. The end of the Grand Prix is *chef kiss*
Also, the cast is perfect.
This is one of my favorite movies of all time being talked about by one of my favorite youtube channels of all time!
I've never clicked faster on one of your videos. I love this movie and can't wait to hear all about it from you guys.
Alan, bro, I'm right there with you. That final scene where he wins the race breaks me. Such a masterpiece. It's in my top five, as well. Glad you two finally did this movie. I was crying there with you.
So glad you agree. Thanks for watching!
That race scene convinced me to watch this thing when I have the time. Thanks Allan and Jono! I always love watching how passionate you are with the things you love
Yay! Enjoy!
let us know how it goes!
A hurricane on wheels… Personally, I think *demon* is a more apt description. 😉
Okay. No worries.
In the words of a famous Anti-hero of my childhood.
" I'll be Back!"
I love how when the car finally stops it takes a second before the suspension breaks like the cra itself let's out a breath and sits down
While this film was lambasted when it released, it's only gotten better with age.
100% agree.
No, he's right: this film mixes live-action with anime stylistic conventions, and the two aren't compatible.
THE GREATEST EPISODE TO HAVE GRACED THIS CHANNEL - THIS IS ONE OF MY ALL-TIME FAVORITE MOVIES! GO SPEED GOOOOO
WOOOO! Thanks so much!
I'm with Alan on this one. I have always loved this and no one else every does!
I started crying with Alan during that scene it's such an intense moment. Bless!!!
I know when this movie came out, so many people disliked it. However, I grew up watching the cartoon, and this movie is so much like the cartoon. Best cast, best effects, best soundtrack, best directing. This is as anime as any amine cartoon.
YES, I've been waiting for this episode!!! Speed Racer is one of my favorite movies It still confuses me why people disliked it
I love seeing Alan’s love and passion for films running out of he’s eyes.
I get just as emotional as Alan during the final race scene😅 Goosebumps and tears every time😂💯
YES! Finally reacted to Speed Racer! I feel I love this movie as much as Alan does. I can't count how many times I rewatched this film. I'll never get sick of it.
Its so immersive even though it looks cartoony. And that finale!?Ugh! *Chef's Kiss*
ABSOLUTE CINEMA!
YES!!! I LOVE SPEED RACER!! I actually cosplayed as this version's Speed Racer for a comic con the one year, and yes, absolutely NO ONE knew who tf I was 😂
YES! Best Live Action Anime Love! I remember the ending scene bringing me to tears almost every time I watched it
I’ve managed to convince a good few people to watch this movie and I’m convinced they did largely, possibly only, because they could tell how genuinely I am in love with this film.
It is so god damn genius in my book and there is nothing out there like it. Most left very surprised and happy! It’s not for everyone, but it nails everything it sets out to do and it’s beautiful for it.
How long has Alan been trying to do a speed racer episode 🤣
This movie was and STILL is a blast. Wish I could get my family to watch it cause man it’s SO GOOD!
THIS IS IN MY TOP 3 Y'ALL !!!🎉 I LOVE SPEED RACER!!!🎉🎉🎉🎉
The amount of heart and wholesomeness that's in this movie is insane. I get tears in my eyes at the end every time I watch it
I feel you
Thank you for finally doing this movie! Like Alan, it's one of my all-time favorites
This is some speedy therapy
I get so riled up from that last race every single time. I had a phase where I watched this movie every day! I love that you did this episode
YESSSS YESSS FINALLY SPEED RACER BEING MENTIONED YAYAYAYYAAYYAYAYA
The Music in this movie is so unbelievably good!
THANK YOU! Thank you, Alan! Whenever I say this is my easily favorite Wachoskis movie, people look at me like I'm out of my mind.
I LOVE YOUR CHANNEL!! I always turned my notification I love you guys!!!
This is the way.
Speed Racer is literally my favorite movie of all time. When I was younger I took the DVD everywhere in my bumblebee backpack😂😂. To this day it still gives me good, happy, warm, and fuzzy feelings.
This movie is a work of ART! I'm glad it's finally being recognized
Speed Racer is also in my top five favorite films! It is my go-to movie when I just want to relax and have a great time. I have seen it more times than I can count. Such a masterful piece of work. This is how you do a live-action anime.
This movie seriously needs a re-release in theaters. People will now be able to see how good this movie actually is.
BEST
ANIME TO REAL LIFE
MOVIE
EVER!!!
It is my #4 movie of all time, before "The Princess Bride" and after the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy... Dear lord, ssssooooo underrated it's not funny! So glad someone else can feel "Speed Racer"
This movie genuinely is art. I don't care what people say, this movie is a masterpiece
1 of my absolute favorite movies. Brought my Dad and I closer together, and I watch this movie over and over.
Man. I really needed this today, for the same reasons as a lot of you guys. It's times like these we gotta hold onto what's good in our lives.
Thanks, guys.
