- King of the Hammers is the newest rage in off road racing, and Ultra 4 is the top dog unlimited class. KOH entails high speed, hill climb, rock crawling, jumps, Baja 1000 style whoop sections, and every other suspension articulating obstacle you can throw at it.

8:31 gotta have that huge air filter. This was the thing that always bothered me about movies like Mad Max. Every vehicle in Fury Road has big through-the-hood superchargers that look like they're off drag race cars of the '60s. But no air filter, just an open, forward-facing air - or more rock and dust - scoop. Their engines would be clogged and blown within a few miles in that dusty post-apocalypse desert environment.
Quill Maurer Wow that’s a great insight, I love cars and I never put two and two together like that. I did think it was weird how they used such high horsepower cars also, in the desert most of that power is being lost to dirt without proper tires and they’re just wasting fuel at that point.
Yeah for real. They should all be driving Toyota Prius with M2s and flamethrowers.
@@billbrasky6827 Actually makes sense, we assume fuel is a scarce resource so something more efficient would probably be more sensible than massive horsepower. If I were in a scenario like that I'd probably build a sail-propelled go kart, at least if it's consistently windy.

Or howabout Mars? In movies like The Martian they always have weird six-wheel rovers for them to drive around in that look nothing like Earth off-roaders. Driving around in sandy, rocky terrain (like Mars) is not an otherworldly problem, it is something we've dealt with and gotten quite good at on Earth - so why not use something developed from an Earth off-road vehicle for exploring other planets rather than re-inventing the wheel(ed vehicle)?
@@quillmaurer6563 Mostly it's because these vehicles are built for different purposes. Mars rovers are electric because carrying gasoline to Mars is impractical. They have six wheels because each wheel can be raised or lowered independently to clear rocks. They want a stable system with the lowest possible risk of rolling over. They're the size of a 3 person tent because it's also a laboratory on wheels. Everything on the Mars rovers is designed with longevity in mind. Earth off-roaders require constant upkeep and tuning which is something that astronauts won't have the time or resources for. A hydraulic lift would take up so much of the weight and space in cargo, not to mention the tools needed to actually install one somewhere.
If we could get some coordination between NASA and SpaceX for a mission, maybe Elon could shoot a rocket to mars carrying an electric off-road buggie and spare parts. Maybe the rocket module could be sort of like a garage with it's own separate solar array so that it doesn't draw power from the main base. That would be really freaking cool.

I agree that current designs make sense for unmanned rovers, which need to be self-sufficient (no mechanics on the planet), capable of crawling over rocks quite large relative to the rover's size, and very low speed requirement (they go less than 1 mph). I'm thinking more about future manned rovers, which in most renderings and movies I've seen look more like scaled-up faster versions of these rovers than like Earth manned off-road vehicles, in my opinion for manned missions Earth off-roaders would be a more logical starting point. Maybe a combination of both, but would need a pressurized life-support capsule that neither have ever had. Either way would obviously need to be electric - regardless of fuel, there's no oxygen to burn on Mars either so a gasoline engine wouldn't work.
@@quillmaurer6563 haha, you're totally right about the oxygen thing. I didn't even think about that. I've seen a manned rover that looks like a pod on little stilts. I think James May actually did a review of it on Top Gear. It's like a little box on six wheels that can all move independently of one another. Very weird looking craft but excellent at what it's designed to do. Fingers crossed that we can have some sick EVs hitting the Martian dunes one day soon.
