finally got this behemoth on the table and given it a play through solo, took a while to paint everything and get my head around how it all works I get it, not gonna lie easily the best table top game I have played in a long time, it’s going to get played a lot this year at least and I can’t see myself ever selling it, it’s a keeper of the solo collection

Absolutely amazing great video. But you made it harder for yourself at one point. Immediately after building your first workshop you start researching a technology. You don't have to use the building itself. Fun to watch, you have my subscription for sure!

I just started the game early this morning 7AM. This may be the best game I’ve ever played!! So inventive and thematic. I do see some inspiration from the board game greats like Arkham Horror 2nd edition and Mage Knight but I see some new mechanics that’s blown me away!! I would love to see a horror expansion added to the Expeditions, i.e., Alien or the Thing; That would be so cool!!

To ensure I don't forget to spend coal on the automaton, I place the coal directly on it and only add it to the supply when I retrieve it. Thanks for your great Videos. I always enjoy them a lot. And there are extremely helpful.
Having played quite a few hours in the original Frostpunk video game, this is a little weird to watch (a factory and a brand new automaton on day one?!), but overall I like how the mechanics have been changed to suit the different medium. The core theme and feel of Frostpunk, of harsh decisions and unforgiving challenges, is still very much there. Also, this is my fist time watching this channel, and I must say I'm impressed by the quality of this video! Subscribed!

I like to think of it as some of the research already being finished when you start, like in the fall of winterhome story. Also it is possible to build an automaton in the same day as the factory, if you do it early enough.

Really efficient opening round that led to a great playthrough: Your (first round ) actions were: 1- Build Factory, Workshop, Gathering Post 2- Use a factory to produce Automaton 3- Remove Snow with Automaton 4- Use Gathering Post to gather 4 coal and 3 wood 5- Use the platform to pass a law (Child shelter) and automatically build Child Shelter. 6- Collect 2 wood 7 - Build 2 tents and Hunters Hut By the end of round 1, only 2 sickness. Very solid opening sequence, well done!

Just managed to get this game at a decent price. Stayed away from it for a long time because of the setup time; table space needed etc, ... but actually I think I will manage quite well, I'm now more used to heavier and bigger games. I hope you have some benefits from this channel and some publishers will send you some free games, because you are "selling" a lot for them and your channel is better than Rahdo's, slikerdrips or Jongetgames. The atmosphere, the voice, the filming, the games you choose, it all makes for the best Board game channel, and I am sure others will think the same when will discover you.
I really hope your tastes are the same as mine and you enjoy these games as much as I do. Since I'm a playthrough channel, I only make videos about games I recommend, so the channel does become a kind of curated list. I'm actively trying to make playthroughs of all my favorites (with solo modes), as well as sharing the new games I've run across. Watched your part 2 yesterday! I now plan to restart my game ( totally playing wrong, giving myself way too much food, although still getting sick 😢). @15:33 Are we sure that the yellow buildings are heated? I thought the heat marker ( red, yellow, orange) have to be below the main flame (heat) marker? That’s what it says in the book but maybe I’m reading it wrong? NEVERMIND, I see it now. The building adjacent to the generator is indeed below the heat line and therefore covered. 😊
I just found your channel, as I started my first game myself. This was a really nice tutorial and helped me a lot. Just one thing I noticed, you placed the storm token at round twelve, but the "A new home: Crater" Scenario says, to place the storm token at round 9, wich makes it a lot tougher...
Yeah, dumb mistake on my part. But watch part 2. I address the mistake and explain why it didn't really matter in this game. But it usually would make a big difference, you are right. @@TotallyTabled Thank you, I just started episode 2. One more question, to my understanding of the rules you are only allowed to heat up the generator at the start of phase 4,6 and 9. The important part here, "At the start" of the action phase (6), so you can't gather coal first and then heat up the generator for the other actions. If so, you would have to plan a lot more carefully with your coal reserves.
If you check the rules page 23 under Player Turns it says, "On your turn, you may first choose to fuel the Generator (as per the rules on page 20)... So you can absolutely heat up the generator a little bit to make some actions warm (like getting more coal) and then heat a bit more to make more actions warm. :) @@Budda523

It is a big game that is long and difficult with a lot of rules. The first few plays are tricky and takes a bit of work. But if you power through the learning curve, you will find a truly satisfying and epic survival/city building experience. It is not for everyone. Definitely for me! 2 errors I noticed: The first storm starts on round 9 not round 12. You choose which technology you are working on when you build the workshop, not when you first go to it.
@@TotallyTabled Shaggi what's this game like 2 player? Personally some Co Op games (TWOM For Example) I have found to feel a little unnecessary in 2 player mode..
This is exactly like TWOM in that it is really a solo game and they found a way to share actions and turns for the multiplayer. That could be fun, but for me it is a solo game all the way and I doubt I would ever play co-op. I want to make all the decisions in this one. :)
19:00 this is just me I also used to also do child shelter, but why make our toiling workers and engineers work in cook houses, when the children can do that just fine? why not send your workers to build hunt or work in one of three mines/mills and let the kids clear out the piles of coal? why have children slightly improve medical efficiency when you have infirmaries?
I got it from KS, but I didn't get all the fancy resources and buildings and things, so I believe what I showed is what comes in the retail box. But I'm not 100 percent sure. If it is, then I would say no extras are needed, but I'm not much of a blinger. Thanks for watching and supporting the channel for so long!

Great playthrough as always! This decided it for me-although Frostpunk looks like a good game, I think I'll have a better experience with This War of Mine. Although Frostpunk has the same hues of social commentary, I think the more personal approach in TWOM will make a bigger impact on me. Hi. I have doubt on the action phase on the beginning. If you would like to incerase the heat, you must put the coal in the generator. Not in the bank as you did.
Nope. You place coal in the generator during the generator phase. The more you heat, the more you will dump in, but it isn't 1:1. By doing it this way, you don't know how much damage will occur, so you can sometimes push your luck during the action phase. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching!
Can it be that you missed on the feeding citizens part? Normally you feed the type of citizen from the day before? If the round marker is on the engineer you feed the children?
@@TotallyTabled no I just thought on the feeding phase you feed the people who were hungry the previous round. So for example when the round marker is on round 2, in the hunger phase you feed the type of citizen depicted on the icon above round one, meaning you feed the citizens who were hungry in the previous round. But I can be wrong in this, just thought I learned it like that from te rule book😁
@@TotallyTabled you're right, this part was sort of confusing to me too, at first though. basically you decrease any previous hunger first, by spending food, then you spend more food to feed the appropriate citizen type. any food that you're unable to spend in the first part increases sickness, and any food you're unable to spend in the second part increases hunger. so people can go 1 day without food, but you will need to pay that food cost the next turn or people will get sick. edit: I'd also like to add that this pretty much mimics the effects of food and hunger in the video game as well, people can go 1 day without food but need to be fed after that or they get sick.

Sorry, Katy, I missed the second part of your question. I agree with NRGY. Sleeping Gods would be my recommendation if you want story, exploration, and adventure. Frostpunk would be favored if you want a city-building survival epic strategy game.

Hi! Amazing play through, I’m very excited about this game. Say, how practical are the miniatures/wooden buildings? I haven’t seen a single play through where they are used, I myself like the wooden version and I’m thinking on getting them but I’m hesitant as they may block things from view… what do you think?
I personally like the cleaner look of the cardboard, but it really comes down to aesthetics. I don't think they block or make the board more confusing once you understand the game. But they don't add anything either, except for maybe a more beautiful look. I didn't want to take the extra step of placing out the building minis, especially when filming. But keep in mind I often prefer standees and cubes to miniatures, so I might not be the best person to ask. 😀
It is the most counter intuitive rule in the game. I did a double-take when I read it in the rulebook and really had to study their example. Well placed gathering posts are very important in the early game. Thanks for checking out the video!
Help. Storm card I/09 ... What do effects 1 and 2 mean? If I remove the yellow marker, can I no longer heat yellow buildings and areas? What does the X in the yellow and orange markers mean?
Amazing video. At 54:12, the card says "Place 1 Spent Worker token in the supply." I'm confused about how this works? Could you please explain it? Also, what do all the conditions along the bottom mean (-1 Hope, Activate Anger -1 Hope, Activate Anger -2 Hope")? Thanks so much!
And at 54:52, you said you dealt with the hunger, but I'm not super clear on how you dealt with that. Can you please explain? (I played through for the first time today and a few things are unclear :)
The "spent worker" part of the card (upper right) is only used at the beginning of the game as part of setup. You can ignore it during the game. The bottom part of the card is used for a death condition -- something bad happens depending on what type of worker died. Again, you can ignore that when playing the card. Hope that helps. @@ckclz Yeah, hunger is basically unmet food needs from the previous round. So I spent my food to cover that leftover hunger first. Then I fed my workers. I didn't have nearly enough food to meet the food need, so the portion I couldn't meet created new hunger that I'll need to take care of next round. Essentially you have two rounds to meet your food needs before something bad happens. It is a bit confusing but hopefully that helps. Thanks!
I'd say Frostpunk will hit the table more, because I have to be in a special mood to play This War of Mine. But when I want that thematic experience, there is little better. So, yes, Frostpunk is barely ahead for me. Thanks for watching!

Ha, ha, yeah I sympathize with you completely. Rulebooks are the worst -- even when they are well written like with Frostpunk. I am one of those crazy people that actually enjoys learning new games. And I've done it more than 800 times, so I've seen it all before. New games are 90% older games with a twist here and there. So experience is really the key and that is one of the few things I can bring to the table. I hope my videos can make reading and understanding rulebooks a bit easier, because it is definitely the #1 barrier to the hobby. Thanks so much for watching, Charley!

Watched your part 2 yesterday! I now plan to restart my game ( totally playing wrong, giving myself way too much food, although still getting sick 😢). @15:33 Are we sure that the yellow buildings are heated? I thought the heat marker ( red, yellow, orange) have to be below the main flame (heat) marker? That’s what it says in the book but maybe I’m reading it wrong? NEVERMIND, I see it now. The building adjacent to the generator is indeed below the heat line and therefore covered. 😊

I just found your channel, as I started my first game myself. This was a really nice tutorial and helped me a lot.
Just one thing I noticed, you placed the storm token at round twelve, but the "A new home: Crater" Scenario says, to place the storm token at round 9, wich makes it a lot tougher...
Yeah, dumb mistake on my part. But watch part 2. I address the mistake and explain why it didn't really matter in this game. But it usually would make a big difference, you are right. One more question, to my understanding of the rules you are only allowed to heat up the generator at the start of phase 4,6 and 9. The important part here, "At the start" of the action phase (6), so you can't gather coal first and then heat up the generator for the other actions. If so, you would have to plan a lot more carefully with your coal reserves.
If you check the rules page 23 under Player Turns it says, "On your turn, you may first choose to fuel the Generator (as per the rules on page 20)... So you can absolutely heat up the generator a little bit to make some actions warm (like getting more coal) and then heat a bit more to make more actions warm. :) @@Budda523

It is a big game that is long and difficult with a lot of rules. The first few plays are tricky and takes a bit of work. But if you power through the learning curve, you will find a truly satisfying and epic survival/city building experience. It is not for everyone. Definitely for me! 2 errors I noticed: The first storm starts on round 9 not round 12. You choose which technology you are working on when you build the workshop, not when you first go to it.

@@TotallyTabled Shaggi what's this game like 2 player? Personally some Co Op games (TWOM For Example) I have found to feel a little unnecessary in 2 player mode..
This is exactly like TWOM in that it is really a solo game and they found a way to share actions and turns for the multiplayer. That could be fun, but for me it is a solo game all the way and I doubt I would ever play co-op. I want to make all the decisions in this one. :)

19:00 this is just me I also used to also do child shelter, but why make our toiling workers and engineers work in cook houses, when the children can do that just fine? why not send your workers to build hunt or work in one of three mines/mills and let the kids clear out the piles of coal? why have children slightly improve medical efficiency when you have infirmaries?

I got it from KS, but I didn't get all the fancy resources and buildings and things, so I believe what I showed is what comes in the retail box. But I'm not 100 percent sure. Very 'This War of Mine' or 'Robinson Crusoe' like. Not so keen on that plastic tower, thoe. But, I do like it!

Great playthrough as always! This decided it for me-although Frostpunk looks like a good game, I think I'll have a better experience with This War of Mine. Although Frostpunk has the same hues of social commentary, I think the more personal approach in TWOM will make a bigger impact on me. Hi. I have doubt on the action phase on the beginning. If you would like to incerase the heat, you must put the coal in the generator. Not in the bank as you did.
Nope. You place coal in the generator during the generator phase. The more you heat, the more you will dump in, but it isn't 1:1. By doing it this way, you don't know how much damage will occur, so you can sometimes push your luck during the action phase. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching!

Can it be that you missed on the feeding citizens part? Normally you feed the type of citizen from the day before? If the round marker is on the engineer you feed the children?
I fed the citizens and it is based on the current day. Why do think I missed feeding? I don't understand.
@@TotallyTabled no I just thought on the feeding phase you feed the people who were hungry the previous round. So for example when the round marker is on round 2, in the hunger phase you feed the type of citizen depicted on the icon above round one, meaning you feed the citizens who were hungry in the previous round. But I can be wrong in this, just thought I learned it like that from te rule book😁
@@TotallyTabled you're right, this part was sort of confusing to me too, at first though. basically you decrease any previous hunger first, by spending food, then you spend more food to feed the appropriate citizen type. any food that you're unable to spend in the first part increases sickness, and any food you're unable to spend in the second part increases hunger.
so people can go 1 day without food, but you will need to pay that food cost the next turn or people will get sick.
edit: I'd also like to add that this pretty much mimics the effects of food and hunger in the video game as well, people can go 1 day without food but need to be fed after that or they get sick.

Sorry, Katy, I missed the second part of your question. I agree with NRGY. Sleeping Gods would be my recommendation if you want story, exploration, and adventure. Frostpunk would be favored if you want a city-building survival epic strategy game.

Hi! Amazing play through, I’m very excited about this game. Say, how practical are the miniatures/wooden buildings? I haven’t seen a single play through where they are used, I myself like the wooden version and I’m thinking on getting them but I’m hesitant as they may block things from view… what do you think?
I personally like the cleaner look of the cardboard, but it really comes down to aesthetics. I don't think they block or make the board more confusing once you understand the game. But they don't add anything either, except for maybe a more beautiful look. I didn't want to take the extra step of placing out the building minis, especially when filming.
But keep in mind I often prefer standees and cubes to miniatures, so I might not be the best person to ask. 😀

Help. Storm card I/09 ... What do effects 1 and 2 mean? If I remove the yellow marker, can I no longer heat yellow buildings and areas? What does the X in the yellow and orange markers mean?
Amazing video. At 54:12, the card says "Place 1 Spent Worker token in the supply." I'm confused about how this works? Could you please explain it? Also, what do all the conditions along the bottom mean (-1 Hope, Activate Anger -1 Hope, Activate Anger -2 Hope")? Thanks so much!
And at 54:52, you said you dealt with the hunger, but I'm not super clear on how you dealt with that. Can you please explain? (I played through for the first time today and a few things are unclear :)
The "spent worker" part of the card (upper right) is only used at the beginning of the game as part of setup. You can ignore it during the game. The bottom part of the card is used for a death condition -- something bad happens depending on what type of worker died. Again, you can ignore that when playing the card. Hope that helps. @@ckclz Yeah, hunger is basically unmet food needs from the previous round. So I spent my food to cover that leftover hunger first. Then I fed my workers. I didn't have nearly enough food to meet the food need, so the portion I couldn't meet created new hunger that I'll need to take care of next round. Essentially you have two rounds to meet your food needs before something bad happens. It is a bit confusing but hopefully that helps. Thanks!

It is a kickstarter version, but I didn't use anything extra like the fancy resources or building minis or playmat, etc. I'm not sure how different the retail version is from the kickstarter version. Thanks for watching!

How do you get through the rulebooks and remember them ? I look at the rulebook and ADHD kicks in and it'll take me a month to read through it.
Ha, ha, yeah I sympathize with you completely. Rulebooks are the worst -- even when they are well written like with Frostpunk. I am one of those crazy people that actually enjoys learning new games. And I've done it more than 800 times, so I've seen it all before. New games are 90% older games with a twist here and there. So experience is really the key and that is one of the few things I can bring to the table. I hope my videos can make reading and understanding rulebooks a bit easier, because it is definitely the #1 barrier to the hobby. Thanks so much for watching, Charley!
