  • This is my instructional solo playthrough of the first mission of Earthborne Rangers, a new board game by designers Andrew Fischer, Brooks Flugaur-Leavitt, Andrew Navaro, Adam Sadler, and Brady Sadler. If you would like to skip setup and the beginning story, jump to 10:35.
    RULES CORRECTION:
    When you dodge an obstacle, it remains active. In order to travel at the end of your turn, you cannot have active obstacles on the table. I needed to remove the overgrown thickets before traveling.

    Thanks for sharing. I think every play through I've watched had dice, which is ironic since the game doesn't come with dice. After seeing dice used I too use them. A lot easier than dealing with chits or tokens. In a couple of videos the player used minis. Not sure if they came with the KS version or they supplied their own. I may do that, although the mini would rarely be used.

    • @TotallyTabled
      @TotallyTabled  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I didn't get any of the bells and whistles with my KS order, so I don't know what was available as far as upgrades. The dice work well and I find it much less fiddly than the cardboard tokens. I've started using red and blue cubes for harm and progress. Haven't used a mini but that is a cute idea. Thanks for watching!

      Sleeping Gods is amazing and whether you enjoy that one will be a good indication whether you would enjoy Earthborne Rangers, I think. The focus is on story and exploration and simply experiencing an adventure. They do it in very different ways and Earthborne feels more chilled out. Sleeping Gods can feel like a survival game at times. Hope you enjoy the games and thanks for watching!

    Wonderful playthrough, easy to understand, you've made this game glow. You went through the first mission in around 30 minutes and with few obstacles (I must say by using a very smart ranger deck). There are 17 missions in total so I am not sure I want to put in $140 plus tax (price in Canada for the French edition) if this is an indication of how much game time to expect. Hopefully there are longer missions. The fact the story book is about the same length as the rule book is a bit of a red flag to me as well. Some gamers said there is more "grinding" than narrative, especially for traveling around the map. You usually hear grinding in video games so that is odd. Did you have fun or felt like working more than playing in your experience with the game?

    • @TotallyTabled
      @TotallyTabled  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      That first mission is a glorified tutorial mission -- the kill the rats in the basement mission. The others are more involved. But focusing on the missions is missing the point of the game and it's why this one will be love it or hate it, much like Sleeping Gods. If you approach this as a video game, grinding to complete all the missions as quickly as possible, then it will not be a great experience. But if you see the grinding as exploring, meeting new people, seeing new things, and watching your character change and grow -- and you enjoy that aspect alone -- then you will have a wonderful time. For example, at the end of the video when I discovered that I might be able to fly the Swift and got excited at the possibly despite a warning from my mentor...that is the game. Does it help with a mission? Don't know and don't care. Progression is not measured by how many missions I've created but rather how many experiences have I had.
      I'm still playing through the game -- I've delayed my Top 10 of 2023 so I can play it enough (and one other game) so I can give an informed opinion. I don't want to make firm statements yet. But whether this game feels like fun or work will be entirely based on your ability or desire to approach this game for the journey alone and nothing more. Maybe not even see it as a "game". That is how I approach Sleeping Gods and I love it. That is how I approach Lands of Galzyr and I enjoy that game as well. Not everyone will, especially when price and value judgements enter the equation. I try to not concern myself with those things, because those are extremely subjective to each person. Hopefully the playthrough can help with that determination. Thanks for watching!

    Great play through. One question - is it correct that if the location you're traveling to is NOT a 'key' (I don't remember the game term) location - you shuffle in 3 valley cards in lieu of location cards? I don't think there are location cards for the 'regular' locations. The 'key' locations are yellow and bold.

    • @TotallyTabled
      @TotallyTabled  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I should have mentioned this but I forgot. You are correct -- if the location isn't a pivotal one then you mix in three cards from the valley set into the terrain set. Thanks!

    @arashii_8 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Thanks for this playthrough. ^_^
    Game looks super interesting, I like the art and relaxing vibes I get, as well as narrative and exploratory nature. How is deckbuilding in this game? I'm not great deckbuilder, I like simple and effective decks and it looks like character we create simply determines what cards we want to include, am I right?
    Another question, I'm a bit confused about the sun effect, like how we interpret it "narratively"? I mean, other things make thematic sense like getting fatigued, putting effort into tests etc but I don't get the sun effect, I probably missed something.

    • @TotallyTabled
      @TotallyTabled  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Don't worry, this isn't a deckbuilding game. You construct your deck at the beginning of the game using very simple restrictions. Then throughout the course of the game you gain cards that you can swap in and out for other cards, thus "tuning" your deck as you go along. But you can switch things up when you camp. And your deck basically stays the same size. As for the sun effect, I'm guessing you mean the challenge card effects that cause actions from the other cards? There are three symbols that could potentially show up when you take a challenge that can trigger effects on other cards. It makes the world feel alive. And adds push your luck to taking tests. It is a fantastic system. I'm not sure how to explain how to understand it narratively or thematically. My advice is to ignore the mechanisms and focus on the results and let your imagination take over. We don't get distracted by the computer code when we play video games, why get distracted by a board game mechanism that allows two predators to attack each other. Or for a fawn to graze on some berries in the background while you talk to a stranger. Not sure that helps, or if that was even what you were asking, but I hope it helps. Thanks for watching!

    • @arashii_8
      @arashii_8 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TotallyTabled thank you for explanations! ^_^ I'm glad that deck construction is not as emphasized, I mean, I like it, but thinking about e.g. Arkham Horror lcg I'm often discouraged as it's complicated. Better with Marvel Champions, here it's pretty straightforward.
      Sorry, looks like I didn't make myself clear, I got distracted by these sun icons, like I know it's mechanism just to trigger effects from other cards, it's just that rest of the game is so "narrative", like even text on your cards "reach to your pocket and get X" instead of "search your deck for X card" that I tried to explain what these weather icons do in similar manner, and why on challenge cards specifically. But nevermind, I asked simply cause I got immersed and tried to "make sense" out of it, like is weather in the game doing that? Haha. 😄 Anyway, great game, I'm dying to try it out, it's not available currently in stores here.

  • @user-nh5bh8vb3o

    Thanks for the playthrough! One rule question: at 17:20, you resolved the sun symbol. Is there a particular order of cards you must resolve? You resolved the sun symbol for the mission, and then drew quisi (the girl) and then resolved the girl’s sun symbol. I’m wondering whether you have to resolve the sun symbol of the girl given that you drew it by way of resolving a sun symbol of another card. I wonder if the sun symbol of the girl could have been avoided in this case. Thanks!

    • @TotallyTabled
      @TotallyTabled  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That is a good question and I can't say I have a definitive answer. The rulebook does say to resolve the weather card, then location, then missions, then the along the way row, then the within reach row and finally cards in the player area. It also says if a card moves to a row that has already been resolved, then it doesn't resolve. Which leads me to believe if it move to a row that hasn't resolved, then it resolves. One rule of thumb I use in all games that usually works -- assume the game has no memory. So I remember that I put Quisi there, but the game doesn't remember when I get to that stage. Most games work this way. But I could be wrong. Thanks for watching!

    Hi - I saw online that there is quite a bit of errata. Would you recommend waiting for the reprint or do you think it does not disrupt the gameplay? How does this game compare to sleeping gods in terms of scope? I loved the size of the map in sleeping gods leaving some areas complete unexplored in my campaign. The map in this game looks smaller?

    • @TotallyTabled
      @TotallyTabled  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It is smaller than Sleeping Gods for sure. You spend more time in each location on the map, exploring, talking to people, etc. So it has a different feeling. Also, this doesn't have the same focus on combat. I really haven't run into issues that needed errata, but I might have missed something. I haven't looked at any of it. Sorry, I can't provide a better answer. Thanks for watching!

    Do you find it repetitive to always play the same ranger cards or do you get enough new ones along the way?

    • @TotallyTabled
      @TotallyTabled  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I didn't personally find it repetitive, but I've not played all the way through. Your deck does change and you get new cards fairly often. But even when I was playing mostly the same cards, it never felt repetitive to me, because I was so focused on the world and all the new stuff I was seeing there. I have heard complaints about the end game being repetitive around traveling. I haven't experienced that yet either. I've been playing this slowly. If you binge it, I could see it start to feel repetitive. Not sure I answered your question, but those are my thoughts. Thanks for watching!

    Learning this game almost drove me insane. Haven't had such a hard time with a game in many years.
    I read the rulebook initially twice and then proceeded to the prologue where things fell apart quickly. The chopped up, creating your rangers process with its bypassing certain rules somehow didn't work well with my head and cause a lot of confusion and frustration. From there on, it somehow never recovered for me. There was just confusion stacked upon confusion.
    After about four location into the main game, I abandoned it entirely. It's a cursed game now for me and I will never return.
    All this is entirely based on my head and not the game. I believe it is generally a great game.
