We Explored an Alligator Infested Florida Swamp and Found TONS of Shark Teeth | Fossil Hunting

- We are FINALLY back to exploring the swamps, creeks and rivers of Florida for all sorts of prehistoric fossils! On this adventure, we hunted a Miocene age marine exposure loaded with juvenile megalodon shark teeth, whale fossils, dugong fossils and more. We also managed to find some cool mushrooms, saw some wildlife and even found a huge snapping turtle skull. It was a very fun and successful trip for the few hours we were able to be out for. We'll be returning to this location for a very long and exhausting full day of hunting as soon as we can!

Love the fossils of course, but that Snapping turtle carcass was the best find for sure! It’s an incredible and rare species to find, but the carcasses are also giving us a neat peak into the same taphonomic processes that some of the fossils we find go through.
I think that’s really cool!
So happy to see another couple other than us who uses kayak paddles in the canoe. It just makes so much sense!

There is this stuff to keep water out of your ears it called moldable silicone ear putty. You take a chunk and push into your ear canal to mold it to the shape and it seals it off so no water get in there, my niece had to use some when she had surgery on her ear!

Florida people are so confoundingly relaxed about alligators, snakes, and snapping turtles.
I have started watching your podcasts recently, so I have a lot of catching up to do. I love what you both do & how you explain your finds to a mere novice like me. Question: Why are you not afraid of the Aligators & snakes?You just jump straight into the water 😮
Just a little tip for your ear. I use echinacea tincture both for myself and my dogs when we have ear infections and it clears it up almost immediately
Looked like a great day of fossil hunting. Never though there would be that much to hunt for in Florida. Always wondered what I would do for outdoor activities, and now I have some ideas. Might be moving down there in the very near future and this looks like a lot of fun if I can find the right location.
On our lake, the reason I say to never mess with a snapping turtle is because we but a stick up to it, about 1 or 2 inches thick, and the turtle snapped it. Never mess with a snapping turtle!!
I really hope bree saved that turtle skull. With a little cleaning I know she can make something beautiful with it.

Chris…they do sell a wax at pharmacies that covers your ear canal. Works pretty good. Just ask the pharmacist

you gotta go check out the bone valley fossil farm! you can find a lot of amazing meg teeth and other Pleistocene fossils
Way more fun to find your own spots. And cheaper. Lol

If you could recommend one beach to go to find shark teeth...Which would it be? I have found 1000's in Myrtle beach but I want to find a few big ones. Not much on going in alligator water. Thanks and love the videos.

It's very close and likely the same exposure. This part of it is scarce in terrestrial vertebrates, but the marine stuff is nearly identical to the marine material in the site Richard is interested in.

can you tell us about the mindset of dealing with dangers like snakes and alligators?
Absolutely. I'll probably go over this in detail in a video sometime, but the most important thing is to stay aware of your surroundings constantly. I'm always looking for signs of potentially dangerous things. I mention alligator slide marks often in these videos, not for drama, but because it's legitimately something constantly on my mind and something I am looking for. With snakes, you just have to know what areas are the highest likelihood of venomous ones and walk carefully. I look where my feet go before stepping for nearly every step if I'm in a place likely to have snakes. If I realize that I was looking off in the distance at something interesting and still walking, it's an uncomfortable feeling for me because I know I placed my feet in areas I did not confirm were safe first.

They make dive masks with built in ear covers for equalization I mostly would wear them for scrapping the barnacles off the bottom of boats to prevent miniscule things from entering my ears and I would definitively wear them in those waters😁
Actually I own one of those masks an Ist brand and I use it as you describe whenever I feel that I should good call Cheers

I was sitting there thinking the other day I would love to meet you all. I live in southern Michigan. One day I was checking out at one of our local small town stores when who walks in? Wildkyle! Im Australian and there is no way you would swm with saltwater crocs here as no matter the circumstances they will attack and kill you. Crazy you are swimming wth gators still.

if you want to protect that ear, i think your best bet is a foam ear plug with the tip covered in Vaseline, then the hood over it to keep the plug in place. (or don't go in!)

I live in Titusville Florida where is a good place to start looking in my area. Would love to do this with my family. Any hot spots you can point me to.?
I grew up in Titusville in the late 1960s and 70s and found many fossils on the spoil islands in the river mainly in the winter when the wind came from the north and lowered the water level. I found many around Haulover canal also. Happy hunting and enjoy the journey.
This is an awesome video I live in Maine and yesterday I found a clam fossil in fossilized sandstone and 3 weeks ago I went to Chesapeake bay and found a stingray mouth plate

Quick tip. Growing up around gators, if we swam in the bayou, I always tried to have (water dynamite) fire crackers to toss in the water before hand….. just to make sure nothings lurking.
