Great speech! and it is true, many immigrant parents who bring their children here want their kids to straight up learn English. They sign up their kids in schools that only use English, thinking it's the best and quickest way to learn English, and throughout the years they forget their native language. Even though I was born in the U.S. to immigrant parents, Spanish was my native/primary language. In elementary, I felt left out that I did not head straight to only English classes, I was in classes where they spoke both English and Spanish. But now looking back, I am grateful that my parents kept my sisters and I in a bilingual elementary. That was not only how I learned English, but Spanish as well.
