- Two former British National Road Race Champions, two men who know a thing or two about racing at the upper echelons of the sport, Matt Stephens joined up with Yorkshireman and former Team Sky pro, Russ Downing, to recce the 2019 Elite Men's UCI World Championships Road Race Course in Yorkshire.
Taking in some of the same roads and climbs that featured in the 2014 Tour de France, the duo picked out what they believe to be the race deciding points on the course and the riders that will be gunning for the rainbow bands this September.

Matt is one of the best ambassadors of cycling to all of us everyday riders and avid bike racing fans. Very relatable and has a great depth of cycling knowledge. Always makes me want to jump on my bike.

watching a gcn video followed by a sigma one with matt back to back feels like visiting both of your divorced parents over the weekend and my parents are not even divorced.
Hearing Matt's laugh again was a real pleasure.

ScrimHyphen Matt would not fit in with the wooden dorks and posers of GCN. That was the past. This Sigma gig is much better.....creative, fun and informative.
@@lorenzsiggel1515 I disagree mate. I quite like James and Chris as presenters at gcn. They're professional cyclists who rode for Canyon Eisberg. Certainly not posers.

There's the Matt Stephens laugh, haven't heard that in a while. Coincidently I think the last video I saw on GCN was when he trumpeted while out on a ride. The classics never die.

If you're reading this from outside the country and wonder about this circuit PRAY the weathers good! When the weather bad in Yorkshire it's hell on earth, the inclines are hell, the conditions will bring you to your soul for sanity! To sum it up, a moor with a hard wind and rain will reduce you to nothing...
Yes. I ride these roads a lot. You can start off in June in sunshine and 25-30C and get hailstones and 40mph gusts an hour later. Can be the best ride of your life or your worst experience on a bike (and sometimes both in one ride).
It's a tough day.

If it’s wet on the day that finishing circuit could be carnage! That left hander across the zebra crossing will be like a skating rink in the wet. Hate to see a race decided by road furniture and poor road surface!

Sounds like Matts bottom bracket was in need of some adjustment on the climbs ;) incidentally, anyone wanting to ride the climbs, they´re harder in the opposite direction, steeper side up the Buttertubs is from Thwaite towards Hawes, with 20% + switchbacks climbing out of the valley, then going from Hawes via Gayle over Fleet Moss (25%) back to Buckden (where they started riding from) although I guess it was routed this way for the size of the peleton and support vehicles with safety being a major factor.

Hi Graham, Matt and Russ were wearing lap belts that our photographers use when shooting out the back of the car. Whenever they weren't wearing the lap belts, the vehicle was stationary. I'm glad you enjoyed the video! It's definitely going to be a great race. Thanks, Lucy
15'29 clearly not wearing lap belts, you can even see the seat belts on the back of the seats lol
@@Darthshearer Hi Martin, the lap belts aren't attached to the original seat belts as they need to reach into the back of the van, they have separate anchor points. The scene after was when the van was parked up and stationary.
