Ruger PC Carbine vs. S&W FPC 9mm Carbine - Range Review - Which One Would You Choose!

  • The S&W FPC and Ruger PC Carbine are two excellent 9mm firearms and my son and I put both of them to the test. Red dot optics are mounted on both carbines, and we use S&W and Glock magazines for our testing.

@mixup98 Hey, Mixup! I, too, just want you to know that your videos are a must-see for me. I love seeing you and your son enjoying target shooting together. My son graduates high school here in about a month and while he enjoys some occasional shooting with me, there are currently too many alternatives for him that I have to compete with at this stage in his life. He currently seems to have better free time options than hanging out with dear old dad. Such is life. I'm holding out hope that things will eventually come around because I've always been told that I'm supposed to appear smarter as he grows older. 😉
Anyway, I'm curious as to your thoughts on the Magpul backpacker iteration of the Ruger PC Carbine and if you've seen it. Prior to the release of the S&W FPC, I'd been waffling between a Ruger and and a KelTec Sub-2000. After I saw the Backpacker version of the Ruger I thought I had settled upon a decision. Then, S&W released the FPC and added a third option for me. Hmm...🤔

Being the owner of a Ruger 10/22, it seems the Ruger PCC is an upscaled version of that platform and would be an easy transition BUT that said, the simplicity of the takedown of the S&W is a great selling point. Not that the Ruger is overly complicated but any design feature that makes maintenance easier is always appreciated.

I love how genuine your videos are. They’re not over the top, and they’re more relatable I think on a intermediate firearms enthusiast that doesn’t need to know every measurement but the main points. Something about the videos seems more genuine to me than other channels I like to watch for firearms. I’m glad I found it!

Another great review. Every minute is filled with information and even the shooting sequences are illustrating the narrative. Good stuff. I bought the Ruger PC9 take down model when they first came out and so I saved some money over today’s prices. I went crazy and added a Midwest Industries fore end, chassis and a folding adjustable stock. Now I can remove the barrel, folded up the stock and put it all away in a backpack to throw in my truck. Not a cheap setup but I love it. I put a Romeo 5 red dot on it with a riser that allows me to use the iron sights or the red dot. Unusual that you can use both with minimal adjustment of your head position. I have only handled the S&W at my gun shop but simply did not care for it. Of course, with my modifications it is not an apples to apples comparison like yours. Thanks again for another great review.

I've had the Ruger since 2018 but learned just last month that a loose stock can induce malfunctions by altering the magazine feed angle. So I've applied Loctite on the stock screws to prevent them from working loose.

Good stuff, as always. I can't tell you how many hours I've spent behind a 10/22, and the PC Carbine looks like an enlarged version. That takedown mechanism is rock solid. The ability to use Glock mags puts the PC Carbine head and shoulders ahead of the S&W, IMO. I'll keep shopping S&W for my revolvers (although you couldn't buy my Vaquero from me for anything), but I'll stick to Ruger for my carbines.

Once again you go over something of high interest to me! This was fun stuff!😊 You raised many valid points about both rifles for us to choose. Neither one are junk and would serve a person well. I lean to the ruger on possible durability. But who knows. Some of the plastic pieces are Amazing. But the folding lock up parts being plastic give me pause about long term on the Smith. But my use for the Smith wouldn't be running a lot of rounds. Great job brother.

I got a butt stock pouch for my Ruger PCC, which allows me to carry the allen wrenches and DOPE cards as I run different ammo (115gr, 124gr and 147gr, FMJ and HP). It also gives me just the right amount of rise on the cheek weld for my optic as well as making it softer and not so cold in winter shooting.

I was considering a PCC for about a year and looked at many different models. I did look at the Ruger but had decided on getting a different one. I liked the Ruger but for various reasons decided against it. Fortunately for me I waited just long enough for SW to introduce theirs and was immediately impressed. After comparing to the model I had decided to buy, I bought the SW FPC and couldn't be happier. It is well built, easy to disassemble to clean and very accurate.

Excellent video guys..!! Both carbines look terrific, but I have the Ruger, it's the best since it handles glock mags which also used for my handgun so I don't have to think about which mag to use. I'm contemplating changing my Ruger chassis system to the Magpul Back Edition since it looks more sleeker & can tie in the barrel section to the buttstock so it easier to carry in a backpack as one unit. Thanks also for comparing the bullet speeds on the carbine vs the handgun which was very interesting to see, especially since they use the same mag.

Comment for the algorithm. It's always fun to watch you guys shoot and review guns. I'm a fan of both S&W and Ruger. I like how the Ruger locks up with steel on steel and can take multiple manufacturers' magazines but I like how the S&W stays together when you separate the parts and carries spare mags. When you can't decide, the only rational choice is to get both.

Another great video. Thanks! Just would like to point out that I found a study online about the max effective barrel length for 9mm. They found that around 8.5" is the max. After that the law of diminishing returns kicks in. Sort of. You may get more accuracy but not much more FPS. Thought about getting a PCC but after reading the article I decided against it. For example, Cor-Bon 90 gr JHP +P for a 2" barrel is 1215 fps, 10" 1647 fps and 18.5" is 1754 fps. From 2" to 10" the fps gain is 430+ fps while 10" to 18.5 gains only 110 fps and that's not a great increase for the cost. Just saying.

Two basic upgrades I did to my PC Carbine were add a Midwest Industries charging handle. It's made of STEEL, it's only a 1/4-3/8" longer than the factory charging handle and it's knurled for sweaty hands. It's just enough longer to notice a difference in the ease of charging but not so long that it catches on stuff.
Also, I put in a $50 Volquartsen Target Hammer in the gun. It makes the trigger pull just a little bit lighter and shorter. It's not a ridiculously light trigger pull that could be unsafe. Just two basic upgrades that improve the functional usage of the gun.

i have a Ruger. Had it for around 6 years give or take. Love it. Only thing about it is the chamber is just a little loose and the brass comes out all sooty. I imagine it is loose to accommodate all types of ammo without any hiccups.

The $600 range seems like a fairly good deal for either of these. The S&W looks to be a great value with all those magazines out of the box. (As long as you have an extra optic on hand...) But the Ruger is proven at this point.

The S&W is a nice looking gun, but I don't like plastic. So, I'd pay a bit more and take the Ruger. Liked the vid. 👌🏻👍🏻

Nice shooting videos, the problem and the question that was not addressed is how fast you can deploy both of these platforms. Assuming this is a truck gun, the Smith and Wesson can be deployed a lot faster. There is no barrel and receiver to align and twist. That was the main point for me.

Hmmm great vid as always. I have the Ruger PC and like it a lot. I do like the way the S&W folds... kinda cool. I also have the Glock mag well installed and so of course, I can use my 33 round mags. The mag carrier thing on the Smith is nice.... I'm not replacing my Ruger - and I like the ability to customize the pull length. I could see somebody getting the Smith though... if they prioritize it's features...

Bought the Ruger a few years, ago. Besides adding an extended charging handle and mag release it was perfect out of the box and dead nuts accurate. I recently added a Sig Romeo 5 for good measure too. The biggest downside is field strip and cleaning. I hate cleaning this thing, too many parts in my mind, could have been a simpler design. But if that's the worst part, I can live with it. I also love the Ruger for its lack of "offending" characteristics, which isn't an issue where I live but for some might be a selling point.

What, no bloopers? Lol. I also like both of these firearms but prefer the Ruger. Owning several PCC's, the Ruger is my favorite because it breaks down easily, yet it is more like a traditional firearm when firing it. The added weight is a plus for me and like you said, having sights is a big bonus.

The real trick with the Ruger is to get the Magpul Backpacker stock. Then have the G17 mag with a +2 to fit in the storage compartment, and have the G26 mag installed while disassembled. Then mix and match other Glock mags to fit your needs.
