I can tell you with absolute certainty that the lead singer and drummer, who are the two official band members and songwriters, have a crazy range of inspiration both in genre and era. I hear a bunch of nu metal (especially Deftones) in a lot of their music, but there's also distinct hints of old and new school R&B, hip hop, and soul. I think the two genres people miss when trying to put their finger on Sleep Token's style is blues in the vocals and gospel in the drumming. Vessel's vocal melodies and runs are so rooted in the standard bearers of blues, and II on drums is like if you took gospel greats like Chris Coleman or Aaron Spears and threw them into an experimental prog band. Chops and chops for days. To be able to blend that amalgamation of genres into a cohesive song of this caliber is total witchcraft.
Singer/songwriter stuff too. Bon Iver, Damien Rice, even Coldplay, Radiohead.
On a whole, you are correct that the metal fans in general are really touchy about their comparisons. This band is different though. People are still trying to pin them down and are failing. They are the most creative and original band I have ever heard.
The fan base is different too, they are open to the comparison which is nice! The reason for the comparison is because I am trying to find the influences, the band is incredibly unique!

You need to go down the Sleep Token rabbit hole! As another comment pointed out, Ascensionism is great, but if you want to go back to their first album, Sundowning, I'd recommend Higher, Gods, and Bloock Sport (from the room below)!
They have 2 EP's before their first album (aptly named One and Two lol) which are definitely worth checking out. This is their earliest stuff and it's incredible to see how they have progressed and their sound has evolved.
The singer (named Vessel) does all the instrumentation and some amount of producing/mastering of all their albums and EP's, except for drums which is done by Vessel II (or simply II). The bassist (III) and the guitarist (IV) are touring members.
[Bit about their lore: Their idea is that they all "vessels" for the music to the god/deity "Sleep" and so the identities are not known (although, you can find out pretty easily these days) and they wear masks on stage.]
Don't worry, this is a rabbit hole that I am definitely going to be continuing down! Also, thank you for the info on the lore, I found it very interesting! I have often though about doing the whole anonymous band concept myself!

Really enjoyed your reaction to this amazing band. Correct they are British. They were formed in London in 2016 and are a masked and anonymous band. As for other songs to react to. Vessel does some screams on their first album SUNDOWNING with a song called GODS, and on this TMBTE album a song called VORE. When touring the guitar player screams with Vessel and they are phenomenal live.

You can find almost all of their songs being performed live at some point. They sound so good, especially with the TMBTE tour. They've grown a lot since they began. Makes me want to see them live soooo bad. But I'm in the US, and they are here touring now, but not coming anywhere near the Gulf of Mexico 🥺
I live in the southeast corner of the state of Alabama. I could get to Atlanta Georgia in 4 hours, but Tallahassee Florida is only like maybe 2 hrs. *SIGH** Maybe next tour.

@@BraindeadBreakdown Love Avenged Sevenfold!!! They're awesome. The last concert I saw was Papa Roach. And before that Flyleaf, Stone Sour (Corey Taylor is awesome) Def Tones and Korn. Korn was the best band I've ever seen live in person. And I've seen a lot of bands in my day lol (I'm no spring chicken 😉). But from the live performances I've watched of Sleep Token, they are better live than any other band I've heard. Vessel uses preprogrammed instrumentals except for the parts they play live (drums, bass, guitar, and Vessel on Keyboard) and it sounds like the album! Vessel doesn't need to tweak his voice because he just sounds that good in person! Amazing....I hope I will get to see them live one day. Me and my daughter would definitely love to see them. My husband would go but he's not into them. He's a R&B/Hip Hop person, but he loves me and went to see Papa Roach with me so I know he'll go with his girls to see their favorite band. They just have to come back stateside and come to at least Atlanta or Pensacola Florida. I'd drive for about 4-6 hrs if I had to. 😁
Cuz I know it'd be worth it!!! And I dunno if anyone told you, but their concerts are "rituals" and you come to the rituals to worship. So, that's why we respond with that. 😋

I have listened to their entire discography from earliest to oldest, not something I do for all bands,, and it was worth it.

@@BraindeadBreakdownit's so worth it! Last band I listened to the entire album was Disturbed, their first album. After that it seemed they changed And I couldn't get into the whole album. But with sleep token I feel like I'm a teenager again listening to my favorite band all the way through on a cassette tape lol. Yeah I know that's quite dated. But if you want to start with sleep token I agree that you should start with there EPs one and two, and then their albums Sundowning, this place will become your tomb, and finally their latest take me back to Eden album. I think you will really enjoy the journey.

Have you listened to The Apparition, please do so. It hold a very special place in my heart. I know this entire album is Bessel singing to The Goddess but to me this is a song for my fiancé I lost tragically to heart complications 4 years ago. When you love someone so much that all you have are your memories together and seeing him alive again in dreams, it’s songs like this that help me cope through the pain. I feel the same with Lorna Shores Pain Remains trilogy. I still cry even though I have listened to those songs a hundred times. When Will sings “where do you go when I close my eyes”, it breaks me.

I haven't heard that song yet but judging by their previous work, I can completely understand how it would affect you! I will get there eventually, after this song I decided to do the Sleep Token songs in order.
