i loved the part where she disagreed with her father and went to save her little brother. That was one of the epic moments of Game of thrones together with the red wedding scene :).
This guy is easily the best interviewer, besides Zach Galifinakis in B/W 2 ferns of course, that I've ever seen. He's funny and he can talk to any type of personality. they all seem to like him and feel comfortable, which is uncommon with actors...
I don't know who saw her and thought "promiscuous pirate-come-warlord" but it was a good call. Asha is one of the biggest casualties from book to show. I'd love to see her in a Kingsmoot adaptation.
Lol she's a Greyjoy. What do you think? They don't have times for ribbons and appliying make-up. It's a dark, humid and salty place. They live on ships. Mud, water and wind is what's in store. So no, she's not doll-ified in the tv show. Which is good. Asha in the tv show has definitely a look of intelligence and dare I say of menacing undertone that suits the character very well. I love it.
In the books, Greyjoys are generally all black haired and handsome, so I always imagined actors of Slovenian, Croatian or Serbian origin. There would be perhaps better option, but all haters, shut up. Seriously. She's a good actress, good viking pirate girl, so GTFO.
FalconRS Those nationalities wouldn't make any sense at all nor are those nationalities better looking than any other european ones. The greyjoys are a cultural real world mix of Vikings and Irish people the Irish of which have dark hair generally so there is no problem in that department also those people are darker skinned than western and northern europeans the ironborn are from a cold dampy Island and islands that match Britain and Ireland and their skin would be particularly white as is shown in the show.
god i love her. in the books i had a really hard time visualizing this character and then i saw her and she made Asha/Yara make sense. I was like "Oh duh. that's exactly how she should be."
As GRRM himself said in interviews, casting an actor doesn't mean they have to be exactly like the way it is described in the books, when he wrote Tyrion, he always had Peter Dinklage in mind to play Tyrion - he said it was more about performance than anything else. I find Gemma's portrayal of Yara to be brilliant, a strong character - and it isn't just producers, GRRM is heavily involved in casting decisions too and approves of every actor brought in for roles that he'd written.
Personally when I imagine Asha, Gemma isn't the person I'd think off but that's just my opinion as many other people who have read the books will have their own image of Asha. She's very good in the show, or the amount I've seen of her so far and can't wait for more
There is a difference in saying that you aren't attracted to someone and referring to them as "ugly" - considering someone unattractive to you is an opinion for which you are more than entitled, but when you refer to that person as ugly, that is an insult to which it is sickening in every way and I am perfectly within my rights to state my opinion on that comment
The show does her perfect justice by showing her as a strong female character who can command respect despite being in a man's world and being brought up a warrior - it is incredibly insulting when you make comments like "pretty people becoming uglier" - Gemma is beautiful and the fact that you refer to her as ugly is rather sickening. Not everything is all about appearance and shallow features, casting actors is about looking at the performance and GRRM thought of Gemma as great in the role.
That's a good point, but they also changed the name of Cleos Frey to Alton Lannister, and changed the name Jeyne Westerling to Talisa. Also everything about her is different from that character from the book, if you read the books carefullly.
Alton and Talisa were made to be completely different characters though, even if they fit similar roles. Yara is effectively the same person as Asha though, and the name was indeed changed to prevent confusion with Osha - same as how Robert Arryn is called Robin in the tv show.
in the books Theon's sister name is ASHA but in the TV series its YARA they changed it so Asha will not be confused with Osha the wildling woman Robb/Theon caught during that Bran scene
A low centre of gravity would make roller-skating more difficult. This is because it's harder to adjust for balance due to less inertia compared to a tall roller skater. This can be imagined by picturing a roller skater as an up-side-down pendulum. A long pendulum has a slow momentum and a short one is fast.
They wanted to avoid people confusing her with the wildling Osha. Considering the numerous plots, family trees, houses, banners, the vast number of secondary and tertiary characters, locations and 'fake history', they thought THIS was the point where people might get confused. Go figure..
I hate all these comments about Gemma being ugly! She's not supposed to look like Sansa Stark she's supposed to look like a woman who spends her life at sea! Mist characters in ASOIAF aren't drop dead gorgeous they're normal looking. Gemma played Asha brilliantly
let me but in as i like to do in these convos. The actor that portrays Yara/Asha looks essentially how she is described in the books. She isn't described as a drop dead beauty in the books, and even then she is described as more masculine and attractive in a gruff more tomboyish manner. Unfortunately it seems reality just can beat imagined beauty, granted nothing seems to beat peoples preconceived imaginations about the attractiveness of book characters.
I think she's really good actually, and I am a huge Asha fan. The writing for Yara in the show was not very strong with the exception of one scene near the end of season 2. She doesn't look at all like how I imagine Asha but that's not her fault. So there's that, but I think she's a great actress.
Wait wait wait....Yara Greyjoy is sister of Theon Greyjoy....I thought "Asha" Greyjoy was Theon's sister...? I'm so confuse please help understand this....
Being a pirate is fun. Asha is fun, she dances the finger dance, has her "husband" and "suckling babe", and teases every man she encounters. Victarion is fun, he invents new methods of human sacrifice and shoots crossbows at monkeys. Hell, even Euron is fun, in a black metal S&M kinda way. Yara isn't fun, she's dull and grim. And again, I have nothing against Gemma - she has the exact kind of looks and personality I imagined Asha having. But the writers changed that for some reason.
Still don't understand why they changed Asha to Yara though! I mean, it's not confusing in the books, how can it be confusing in the series where you actually see what the characters look like? Not that it bothers me that much, only that I was confused when "Yara" appeared in the series and I was like, where the hell is Asha!
Yeah whatever. I'm complaining that they completely changed the personality and appearance of a POV character for no reason. I don't care about them changing details like Bronn being commander of the Goldcloaks instead of Jacelyn Bywater, because that's understandable. Asha looking and behaving like a chav instead of a tomboy heiress of a Great House isn't.
She is so much bubblier than the character she portrays. She is lovely.
AtTheDriveBy
Duh
she is lovely
i have a major crush on yara greyjoy

She's so cute.
This lady's effervescent personality comes shining through in this interview. She's the kind of person who brightens a room.
Her smile just melts me.
One of my favorite actresses in the show.
Really cute when she smiles.
she's such a wonderfull actress! I want to see more of her in GoT, her Asha/Yara is just perfect
I'm in love...
Talented actress.
i loved the part where she disagreed with her father and went to save her little brother. That was one of the epic moments of Game of thrones together with the red wedding scene :).
How can she be so different to yara greyjoy.
What a great actress!
Love Gemma as Yara/Asha. She is fabulous in this role. She also seems like the coolest chick.
From all the interviews, this blew me away the most in how different the character is from the actor!
Such a bad ass in the show!
RIDICULOUS YOU MEANT, SHE WOULD HAVE BEEN KILLED LIKE THAT IN REAL LIFE IN 2 SECONDS
i love her laugh at the end :D
me too..hHHHHAHA
i met Gemma at wales comic con and...omg she is gorgeous, inside and out.
This guy is easily the best interviewer, besides Zach Galifinakis in B/W 2 ferns of course, that I've ever seen. He's funny and he can talk to any type of personality. they all seem to like him and feel comfortable, which is uncommon with actors...
You are a fantastic actress, and perfectly fit Asha/Yara´s shoes!
Keep up it up Gemma.
Jaime is my favorite character and I loved Gemma's appearance on S3's finale the most. Keep up the amazing work!
I don't know who saw her and thought "promiscuous pirate-come-warlord" but it was a good call. Asha is one of the biggest casualties from book to show. I'd love to see her in a Kingsmoot adaptation.
+GardenGnome118118 ITS HAPPENING THIS SEASON
Everyone on this show seems to be a really nice person...
she's gorgeous
LOL
her smile is beautiful. never seen her smile in GoT
I love it.
Called Yara in the series because Asha is too similar to Osha I suspect.
Probably the same reason they renamed Robert Arryn "Robin".
he's also called sweetrobin in the books, so it's not as big of a stretch
Geo Judd In Germany she is called Asha
Gemma is so pretty! Kudos to the makeup department on Game of Thrones for making her look SO different!
she seems a polar opposite from the character she plays on Thrones
charming lady
00:25 Love it when people incorrectly pronounce 'pronunciation'. Irony lvl 87.
I love this woman... Great Asha.... and sweet Gemma....
I love Gemma, she's so cute 😍
I love her accent......huge crush on this girl, seriously...
She's so adorable.
Can't wait o see her comeback in season 4 and 5.
Very pretty, very down to earth. Great Yara!
OMG, she's so pretty when she's clean.
In the books, Greyjoys are generally all black haired and handsome, so I always imagined actors of Slovenian, Croatian or Serbian origin. There would be perhaps better option, but all haters, shut up. Seriously. She's a good actress, good viking pirate girl, so GTFO.

She's cute
@@sansastark1497 yea...she is
Her scene with Theon in Winterfell is amazing.
She is absolutely beautiful
Adorable - & the first interviewer in far too many interviews that doesn't annoy! (actually very funny, good work fella..) :)
typical girl!..bully her brother and then tattle when he retaliates!
I don't know what it is about this cat. She is just adorable.
omg i love her
god i love her. in the books i had a really hard time visualizing this character and then i saw her and she made Asha/Yara make sense. I was like "Oh duh. that's exactly how she should be."
WOw ... She is so beautiful
She's so fucking adorable
Gemma's personalty is sooo different from Asha/Yara! She's a great actress.
She's so adorable

Her name is Asha Greyjoy in the books!
want that audition tape... lol. miss whelan you're my celebrity crush :*>
Personally when I imagine Asha, Gemma isn't the person I'd think off but that's just my opinion as many other people who have read the books will have their own image of Asha.
She's very good in the show, or the amount I've seen of her so far and can't wait for more
She is ridiculously cute. I can't believe she is 38 years old :o
7:38 love the smile
Like the smokey voice..
I love it when people say Gemma's nothing like the character Yara in GoT. It's called acting folks, lol.
Canada SHOUT OUT!

Literally never watch GoT, just come here to see how Solaria would sound like.
Gemma is lovely. But this guy's questions are silly and boring. I'll go find another interview of Gemma to enjoy.
That's a good point, but they also changed the name of Cleos Frey to Alton Lannister, and changed the name Jeyne Westerling to Talisa. Also everything about her is different from that character from the book, if you read the books carefullly.
I think she was a great Asha/Yara. Screw all the haters. In words of King Joffrey: "Haters gonna kneel"
she is sooo cute
Alton and Talisa were made to be completely different characters though, even if they fit similar roles. Yara is effectively the same person as Asha though, and the name was indeed changed to prevent confusion with Osha - same as how Robert Arryn is called Robin in the tv show.

Solaria The Monster Carver ⚡
I saw her in one man two guvnors - the entire time I was trying to figure out why she was so familiar!
less dress = more views
more dress = less views
sadly...
there is a scene from the book like that, except it is a bed if i remember correctly lol
she seems quite lovely
Yara rhymes with Lara (as in Croft) and Yarra, a real world name, would be the first pronunciation.
They wanted to avoid people confusing her with the wildling Osha. Considering the numerous plots, family trees, houses, banners, the vast number of secondary and tertiary characters, locations and 'fake history', they thought THIS was the point where people might get confused. Go figure..
STOP! WE YIELD!

This interviewer is 2nd to none, am i right?
she reminds me of a more delightful Lena Dunham
wow, didn't recognize her at first.
I think she's really good actually, and I am a huge Asha fan. The writing for Yara in the show was not very strong with the exception of one scene near the end of season 2. She doesn't look at all like how I imagine Asha but that's not her fault. So there's that, but I think she's a great actress.
And it's not online at all. :(
Gemma is brilliant
Tyrion is described totally different in the books also, should we fire Peter Dinkalge?
Ah I was like I don't remember a yara in any of the books
She's cute as hell, wow. It looks like they used make-up to make her look "dirtier" so she'd look as gnarly as Balon and Theon.
4:10 Look at that window...Jesus in Westeros? Took me forever to notice XD
Wonderful and talented Actress and Comedian I love Gemma as the naughty-but-nice Chastity butterworth
I thought it was strange that they changed Asha to Yara, and kept Osha's original name, while Asha is a much bigger character in the books then Osha
Hell, even Euron is fun, in a black metal S&M kinda way.

what is the difference between asha and yara???
Is Gemma Whelan related to Douglas Murray? They look alike in a way.
hahahah 6:53 "GOOGLE IT"
According to Theon Greyjoy if you read Clash of Kings..
why did they change her name?
Still don't understand why they changed Asha to Yara though! I mean, it's not confusing in the books, how can it be confusing in the series where you actually see what the characters look like?
