I'm sure its not everyone but I waited forever for my raycon impact earbuds. Didnt last 2 days. Love ya Cleet but raycon isnt more then a paying sponsor in my opinion.
what you guys put steves engines through is absolute torture! and they still seem to work! the problems are not because of steves engine designs, but are brought on because you guys are like that rotten kid in grade 5 that just beats the living hell out of his toys with hammers and rocks just to see if he can break stuff! well you guys are trying but that SMX is a tough piece of kit indeed!! Steve has created a well built tougher than nails engine! well done steve!! 👍👍👏👏👏👏👍👍
Incredible engine, massive respect to Steve for creating something that not only refuses to give up but still makes power despite being seriously broken. Cleet needs to step up his maintenance game, anything over 2000 hp needs a teardown after every event to catch this kind of stuff. For the channel, for his wallet, and for us viewers that want to see him succeed.
Sam defending himself over the brake pedal accusations and saying "you both know better than that" immediately made me think of him just absolutely sending the Marauder on the road with a car full of people. Sam is such a legend.
Cleet make sure you guys are using a shielded cable for your drive shaft speed sensor, my drive shaft data looked exactly the same, then I ran a shielded cable right from the sensor to the Holley, and grounded the shielding on the Holley -5V rail and now the data is clean.
Absolutely! Also make sure the drain wire is connected on only one side like you said otherwise you can end up with a ground loop. I deal with issues like this from EMI that VFDs generate. It will cause all kinds of crazy readings on speed sensors because they are looking for a rising and/or falling edge so any noise is assumed to be a pulse.
Glad to see everybody seeing this for what it is. Your engine builder has your back, maybe you could have his. Not maintaining your vehicles is not Steve’s fault.
One are you an employee of Garrett's? If not how do you truly know that he doesn't do the maintenance just because it's not on camera doesn't mean it's not getting done car parts break it happens as for the trans not having second in the moment of ripping down the drag strip he's not looking at what gear it's going in some people just jump all over someone without knowing behind the scenes
I see how hard y'all work. But Steve Morris still showing up means he's totally invested in his engine. That dude is a giant among men. Hats off to you Steve. And congrats for an awesome video of what real friends look like. Great job fellas.
The look of absolute disappointment on his face when he sees those main caps. That's his baby, despite not being in his car. He's devastated this happened to Cleet.
I love that he is so willing to learn about his own creation and learn from every failure and almost always improves. I have no doubt this motor will be coming back at some point
i'm honestly a little upset with Cleetus at the end... poor sportsmanship like conduct and bashing a guy who drove from his home/shop to come fix an engine he sold you... you're never going to get the same customer service from Texas Speed... edit: Steve drove 338 miles to fix the engine.... now if that's not customer service then idk what is... Texas Speed isn't gonna do that just my $0.02
That engine had all odds pointing against it running, with that carnage inside, but yet it ran a 7.6x time twice on 1 cyl down. The amount of forces inside that engine trying to split it up and it still ran all the way to the disassembly, just prove that you can't fault the SMX. Props to Steve to actually show up and stand by his product. WOW
The problem is not the SMX. How can you not have 2nd gear and make so many passes and not realize it? The data was looked at repeatedly. Better maintenance/oversight = less failures.
Don't make the mistake of ditching the SMX.. Steve has had your back through this whole thing and motor had been through hell and back and held together for you and kept you safe! Keep the SMX 🙏
On coopers channel a few months ago Cleetus said that his only real issue was that his engine and trans combo kicked him out of his old classes due to rule changes. The smx is a great platform but mullets chassis cant keep up and the smx cant make enough power reliably to overcome the chassis problems. Mullet is maxed out and he needs to go faster to be competitive in his current classes so he's building eagle to take mullets spot as the main drag car.
@@aidenchristiansen5776 it is making enough power but it is not able to put the power down to go faster because of the way the suspension is set up and also the weight of the car in general adding more power just makes it spin
The new car isn't even a DnD car, I'm not sure what it is even for. Also, there is nothing wrong with the SMX, it won't be any different whether he runs a pro line or some other pro mod type power, it will still break if mistreated the same way. The big difference is pro line or whoever isn't going to jump in a truck or plane and fly over when you break it. I see the new car collecting dust for much of its future if they don't bother with maintaining it.
*After watching the whole video, and reading all of the comments... That engine is top of the line, and Steve Morris deserves all of the praise he's been given!*
Steve Morris is the man. The patience he displayed and willingness to help really shows how good of a guy Steve is. Truly impressive and majorly respectable.
The disappointment and frustration on his face when he saw those main caps was intense. There's something else going on with mullet that's hurting the engine, or just Garrett not doing what he needs to to make sure it survives.
man i understand frustrations being on the road, but this one is absolutely on y'all. that SMX *carried* in a way that most engines would have just thrown rods through the block. Steve deserves his flowers for the level of professionalism and care he puts into everything he touches, this was absolutely user error (if the first ever broken maincap is anything to go by) i'ma be honest, if y'all get an actual good checklist system of full teardown preventative maintenance going for that SMX, she'll take you close to 5's. and it'll be a great jumping off point for Eagle when you finally get behind the wheel on that beast
@steveshortt90 Even though his old brodix block was blowing up at 50-60% of the hp the SMX can take 24/7. That was a stupid take by him and a huge insult to Steve.
Cleet and the boys have got to own this one. Lack of the maintenance and checks required for an engine of that level. Complete an a-z checklist every 2 passes minimum no exceptions. Look at the other 3 Smx cars doing serious numbers with little drama.
Yeah a real lack of maturity with the "we didn't do anything to maintain this, then beat on it with 7 cylinders, now it blew up, so it's time for a change because we should win every event"
texas speed found that out. pete harrel is in the process of finding it out It is good to get in business with garret initially, but their mentality in the shop as far as being able to maintain that level of drive train is..... far below the requirement.
Yup. His team isn't a race team. It's a bunch of good guys doing multiple different projects and their own stuff thrown in. Since cleet isn't a "pro" racer type, his shop can't survive on that type of content
I really hope Cleet reads the comments and rethinks through this after time with his family. A new SMX is the ticket, not going back to a big block. He bought an R&D scratch and dent special and has absolutely beat the brakes off it, then decided to rev it to the moon, and run it on 7 cylinders with two of the cylinders having broken main caps and a wiped Cam shaft, and the Chad motor still ran a 7.6 twice... Steve Morris is a damn good man, and a giant in the engine builder arena while still making house calls to support his customers and friend. Going a different path would be a slap in the face to his friend and just the wrong decision technically. If he goes a different direction, it will be the absolute first time I'll have disagreed with a decision he's made public. Not that my opinion matters, but this one just shocks me.
He's not getting rid of the smx because it keeps breaking due to neglect. The problem is with mullets chassis and suspension, it cant put down the power the smx makes. Not to mention that the smx forced him in to a higher class and mullet just isn't competitive in that class. He needs a different engine to match what the chassis is capable of because atm the smx is too much for mullet to handle.
@@aidenchristiansen5776 U sure a smaller, bur still larger than 427 engine would allow him into a different class? I thought once you go big block, you're in the big boy classes regardless of engine size
@Anderson_999 I'm not familiar with the specific rules, I just remember Garrett talking about it on coopers channel and on this channel before specifically about the smx.
@cleetus read the reddit artice about this video. You killed the engine from your lack of maintenace. TLDR: You drove it missing a gear in the trans, the tires from the burnout pit,and the traction control pulling timing ( Steve litteraly has a video about this). The lifter got stuck becuase you dont maintain mullet. Wiring issues becuase you guys have not worked on it in months. I enjoy the month of freeedom as much as everyone else but YOU killed that engine but just rushing shit again. The suspension is screwed up on McFlurry but you decided to test it the day before leaving when you made a bunch of changes. But you got the blower on Sam's truck! You are about to build a 6 second car with a even more expensive engine that you will do the same thing as mullet and not work on the thing. Hire someone to work on these cars like the Crown Vics or actually schedule the maint on them. I love this channel and everything you do but you need to take this shit as serious as you do about flying. Mullet will kill you if you dropt he crank at 220mph.
Lol 😂 why do you care so much what he does with his cars??? Are ypu paying for the new engine? You think Steve really cares all that much when someone blows up one of his engines? He just gets to sell them a rebuild or new one, it's called job security. Lol it cracks me up that you guys act as if Cleet is running and blowing up their engine. And when you guys build a car that can complete with Cleet, you will start to understand how often things break, even right after they were just tested and maintained.... lol 😂
@@TheMiraldi Alot of us are tired of him blaming everyone else for the stuff blowing up when we have video evidence of him being the cause. Eveyone is aware that steve told him to just drive it one 7. The problem is how the engine ended up in that state. Free country and all that shit.
Man I feel bad for Steve. You know hes feeling the weight of all this and you can see it on his face. It hurt my soul when cleetus said "maybe we need to go back to the big block". The SMX is an incredible engine. Big block also blew up. Maybe they need to lower the rev limiter to where Steve wants it and pay more attention to the data logs.
Big block will make more exciting videos where you don't have to do an expensive dig into the engine to find the damage. SMX will just make faster passes.

Steve for the win here. SMX’s are Beasts, but nothing can withstand torture for too long. Even while broken, the SMX ran 7.61 and Still held together. Like I said, Steve for the Win here!..
I have never left a negative comment on Cleet's channel but I will have to tonight . Cleet admitted two days of testing at least without second gear , who knows how long it's really been out if you can test for two days and not realize you have no second gear . Showed 9500+ rpm for one run so you can figure it did that in everyone since they can't be bothered to figure out the drive shaft speed sensor on the "Rife" sensors car . Steve Morris is so busy at work he didn't even compete in an event he has a very good chance of winning , drops everything to come to the rescue , even gives his blessing to run it on 7 cylinders . Mullet runs a 7 on 7 cylinders twice and drives to the next event . Then for Cleetus to get up on a high horse and rant about the SMX just blew my mind . Steve Morris is a legend ,and so is the SMX . Sorry , not sorry A little more respect was in order .
Yup. Under perfect conditions at that level of drag & drive 50 full passes and 1,000 street miles rebuild is part of regular maintenance. It's not a 200k mile program lol. They did a ton of passes in practice with massive amounts of mistakes. Definitely wasn't aluminum vs iron block. He forgets how much faster and harder he's pushing this setup vs old. Did he even go 6s on the only setup? His new Camaro will be finished soon. He should've waited to announce Camaro will be 6s and Mullet reverts back to 7s. Now that I think of it. He did already say it in a previous video so no need to make it sound so dramatic.
Let's not forget Cleetus did a burnout in Mullet as well, and all they thought of it was ruining the tires. I'm sorry but they're really hard on these cars that people would pour their heart and souls into, and they just seem to break everything. It can't be the cars. Every race car they have they have to overbuild and still they destroy engines and transmissions. It may speak to many things about how they treat their cars, but primarily must include a maintenance program several levels more serious than what they do. It sure doesn't help that they do 100 other things month to month,. You can't just turn on race mode and jump back into 7 and 6-sec cars and try to win events.
I think moving away from that SMX is a step backwards. It's broken because you broke it Cleet! Running with a valve train issue on 7 cylinders @ 40psi... Any other engine would have blown up. Bit of an insult to Steve too to be fair.
If this turns into some goofy sponsored change to a different engine builder / buying part ownership in an engine builder will be super disappointing. Throwing Steve under the bus seems fake / weird / unnecessary.
Exactly. I was quite shocked by the ending. They should do some self-reflection instead of taking stabs at Steve. SMX engines have proven to be great and reliable engines. Yet they need to be taken seriously. Continous inspection. Which also includes the transmission. To me it seems like it's been biggest problem in all the breakdowns. Anyways... we'll see how this unfolds. Probs to Steve Morris for showing up immediately once again.
Y'all are taking this way to serious to think cleet would move away from smx I don't understand why everyone so butthurt all of sudden get a grip it's not that damn deep
@@DesertEagleDutch That isn’t what it was at all. Cleet could have done a better job explaining himself, but yall are also taking what he said out of context. What he meant was the SMX isn’t the correct platform for Mullet, and he’s 100% correct. He can’t even take advantage of all the power this engine has on tap becuz the damn el camino chassis can’t put the power down without blowing the tires off. They struggle to get under 1.17 60 fts, which is a joke to this engine. Mullet 100% needs a new platform, whereas the new Camaro would be a perfect fit for an SMX.
I love about 34:40 when y'all are clearly stressed as hell listening to Mullet's engine squeak...and there's Sam, doing Sam things, polishing everything in sight because it's what he does. What a guy.
Love ya, Garrett, you know I do. Gotta say it though- you're running pro mod times with the maintenance approach for a 12 second car. The issue isn't the engine or driveline- it's your program bro. The Eagle will yield similar results unless you get way more sophisticated in your program. I speak as the former co-owner of a top alcohol rail.
I know absolutely nothing about what it takes to run a team, drive one of these machines, or work on them. Would it be cost effective for him to just replace engines instead of chasing the program for his maintenance? If the title is true, I would imagine a maintenance regiment and more staff would be more costly for Cleetus. And most of all, hot swapping a prepared motor when it breaks, takes so much less time than constantly rebuilding motors. Again I know nothing, but the time and money for the motor is either close to or equal to the time and labor for full racing team maintenance. Would love your thoughts
@@tylerwest2666 Great questions. Short answer: Five times more expensive. Also, Garrett isn't competing in a series, just individual events, even if some of them last a week. Winning a series requires top finishes week after week against a tight field. A pro maintenance program makes all the difference. An additional thing- throwing a crank or rod through the side of a block at 200+ mph can end badly from fire and oiling the back tires.
@@neilreid9005 Swapping engines all the time would be five times more expensive than having a professional maintenance program? Or the other way round? I'm confused because I don't have the slightest idea about wages in the u.s. and can only guess the price of an engine like the smx (70k - 100k I guess?)
@@Harry_Gersack I think he said right around 50k? Don't quote me on that but anyway. You'd have to think even adding someone to the team at 50k a year, that can really add up. If you ask me he's kinda stuck between a rock and a hard place. Especially with his purpose built car almost done. Id say run the fast events with the new car and put the regular big block back in the mino to run drag n drive. But hey who the hell am I right?
Moving away from the SMX will be a bad decision, not only is it a great engine but you get 100% support from the person who builds them for you. But a new block from Steve and start again, look at all his other customers who bought new SMX blocks and haven’t had one issue.
For Mullet I do not think it is a bad decision. Mullet is too heavy for this type of power. Since he went to the SMX, Mullet has done nothing but eat engines and transmissions. They have stripped the car down in weight all they can. Take it back to the big block where mullet was at its peak and wait for the new build from CJRC to get the power and speed he wants.
The problem is that to get such a big heavy monster of a car down the track hard, cleetus is running the SMX at the same sort of power levels almost every run that the other guys are running as the end of the week, hail mary passes. It's been coming for a while now, but pushing the elco to low 6s just isn't working. They're killing parts that you don't kill until you're in the 5s. Put a cheaper engine in there that doesn't matter if it pops and let the elco live its life as a 7.50 car where it's happy.
@@lilbitofjoy6130 valid point, but look at some of the other customers running the SMX, including Steve himself in the wagon, it has come down to poor maintenance on Cletus part and not doing enough preventative maintenance, that engine requires a lot of up keep at that power level but you hardly see them removing the oil pan to check over things. Keep the SMX but do more maintenance and you’ll be fine!

@@chrisjohnson4666 Given Cleet's propensity for breaking stuff, seeing things actually last as long as they do is free marketing, really. Also the fact that this is the first time someone managed to break Steve Morris' billet main caps...
Man, I am super disappointed hear Cleetus say this is a SMX problem. This is purely a lack of maintenance issue, as seen by that wiped out cam shaft lobe. Mullet is heavy and needs to be treated like a real race car and have a semi strip down after every major event. At minimum the sump off to check for cracks and bolts, rockers out and inspected, borescoped cam and cylinders. Trans pulled and checked also, along with full fluid replacement. But for some reason, Mullet runs a event and is then parked and tested 2 days before the next major event only to discover the damage from the previous race and then blame the engine?
He didn't say it was a SMX problem...... Infact he said it wasn't a SMX issue! He knows it's a "trying to push the chassis too fast!" problem..... He's saying that it's time to dial it back, go slower and have fun again! If he isn't going to push the envelope then there is zero reason to run the SMX. Of course he's disappointed he's going home day 2, he mentioned that they blew the Big Block, then blew a trans and the SMX twice in the last 4 drag and drives and had to go home........ The chassis is just not what he wants it to do! He's pushing ~4000hp and getting beat up by others with ~3000! Without a doubt they turned that car around way too fast and didn't do the due diligence after the abuse he subjected it to in Indy. I doubt Eagle is getting a SM built engine as I believe they are planning on more power than anything (I know of anyway) that SM currently builds! Ripping donuts then running those same tires down the track was a much bigger idiotic move than I think Cletus truly realized too!
@@commonsenseisdeadin2024To be fair, he does say they have had a lot of bad luck with that engine and that they knew it was a scratch and dent sale. So definitely feels like he's blaming it a bit. To me it just feels like he's been put off the SMX due to his own neglect. A 10 minute sump drop would of found that cracked main cap. Same goes for the roller rockers and all the other issues this motor has had. But i agree with everything else you said. I'm pretty intrigued to see what engine Eagle will run. I also agree it won't be running a SM engine. I originally thought a Ford engine, since the car will be much lighter. But who knows!
Steve reminds me of a former boss of mine. Unbeknownst to me, the blow molding machines we were rebuilding were worth millions of dollars, and he took great offense to how previous millwrights had treated the parts. Big respect for Steve and his restraint over how the crew beat on this engine.
the fact the SMX went 7.60s on 7 cylinders while the main cap was probably broken is truly a testament to how durable that engine is. also the fact Cleet was the first one to break that main cap is impressive in it self. if you want engines durability tested, call cleet lol. if there is a weak link, he'll find it.

It’d be easy to dog Garrett when a Brett LaSala’s stock block Ford keeps waxing him in events… because, you know, it’s a Ford. But the real difference between the two is Brett is taking apart the car after major events. Checking for cracked welds and parts wear. Rebuilding and inspecting the engine every year. Constantly combing through data from 29-30 sensors monitoring the chassis, shocks, trans, turbos, engine, etc. Garrett and his guys just don’t have that kind of time to commit to one single car
@@anthonygibbo1881 No one knows exactly, but top fuel dragsters are tearing their engines apart after every pass.. This is a motor making 3k hp in a heavy ass car, and they wouldn't of even known if the main cap was broke if steven didn't come..

The fact that Steve blew all the rods on his SMX and was able to rebuild the engine with very little rework and still make 4,000hp is a testament to its design and build quality. I know Steve will have that engine back up and running in the 6's in a flash. Sick Summer may be over for Mullet, but it will be running before June comes to an end.
I think instead of changing engine platforms, they need to just be more proactive on maintenance, inspecting everything so things get caught before they get broken. It's been mentioned in countless videos about it being overdue on oil changes and whatnot. Gonna need to do the same with whatever winds up going into Eagle as well.
true, texas speed were getting a bad name due to seeing Cleet blow them up non stop. Cleetus, this isn't a smx issue! This is a maintenance issue. You and your crew are great! but this motor needs regular routine maintenance. You haven't announced what engine supplier your using in eagle, but its going to need every 12-15 pass regular maintenance.

Breaking main caps isn't a routine maintenance issue. That engine was Morris personal engine before cleetus owned it. He is the MAN!!! Plus steve customer service is second to none. WE STAND WITH STEVE AND SMX!! lol plus steve seem so sad about it, felt like i would've hugged him. Get a brand new smx and send it to the moon.
Sending the engine out to 9500 pass after pass with the broken 2nd gear likely wasn't doing the durability any favors. I am more impressed that with 7 cylingers, 2 busted lifters, a wiped out cam lobe and 2 broken main caps it still ran mid 7s twice before driving itself 100 miles to a shop to check it out. The way it has held together appears to have made fixing it up a minor inconvenience compared to what it could have been if it failed in a louder more spectacular/sudden fashion and was totally wrecked.
@@Nismo-gy3wzyeah. Did you not watch the video? This is 100% on Garrett. Having no second gear and sending it hard, isn't exactly easy on any race motor.
@@jeffhutchison3480looks to me cleetus crashed this motor just in time for his new and faster ride. Coincidence? Why would you rerun your vehicle when it went a 7 while down a cylinder He blew it up on purpose
Wow!!! Mullet ran a 6.68 minus 2nd gear. That is freaking incredible. Over 9500 rpm on that SMX. Just wow. An ode to Steve Morris engines. Mullet is unreal Garrett
Don't forget that SMX in Mullet has already been scattered into pieces when it was Steve's motor in his car. It has lived quite the life. And honestly is a testament to Steve and his SMX motors.
@@54racemanwho else has had issues? And being the first main cap he's seen break on an SMX, I'd bet it can be linked to the wagon blowing to pieces last year. Hairline crack that propagated unknowingly
Tom hasn’t finished a event in years, steve has finished like 1,ned has blown his apart multiple times in the less than a year he’s had it and can’t remember the name of the guy didn’t even survive testing before his brand new one came apart
Listen bud I’m in Ontario Canada that never deals with anything like this but as a fan you really put yourself out there based on your following to help other people and I give you a lot of credit. You are good people and your crew is too. There is a reason you guys have so many fans. World would be better with more like you
How that engine survived on 7 cylinders running 2 x 7sec passes at over 200mph and completing a drive is beyond believe. It's a true testament to the craftsmanship of the SMX and Steve as a engine builder had it been any other engine your rods would have been waving to the ground via the new window in the block or pan. That engine can not only handle abuse and lack of maintenance but can do it with a fucking smile. Well done Steve that is one hell of a product you have there!
@@diambo4life yes and no. They ran it to try stay in the running of sick week. They did not know the main cap was shot to shit. Steve told them to run it on 7 as he did not know the extent of the damage and was confident enough that it would not hurt the motor running it on 7.
Steve Morris went above and beyond anybody else that I have ever seen. That guy is a legend in my book! Good job Steve. Best customer service in the business!
Steve seems to be a very nice guy. When Cleetus got sarcastic, Steve didn't know what to say or how to judge this. C'mon Cleetus you know better. This engine was abused and you also know to not run a hurt engine particular not this engine and then on 7 cylinders. Other engine builders wouldn't even come out after that crap. Get your shit together and start to focus! Still like you though. Time to pull through.
I would not give up on the SMX cleet. Get it fixed and work out a few bugs with the car. Idk if there is anymore weight saving that can be done but. That engine just went though the hell other engines would have exploded from. Idk if going away from the SMX is the move. Steve is a hell of a guy for coming out to help and you could tell he was upset.
Exactly there's alot of metal and pressure being built to move that heavy body and I've seen it on this channel when a trans acts funny like that it takes the engine as well. And they just slap another 427 in. An old ag pilot told me engines reliability dissappears at 600+ hp. It's part of racing.
I agree, runnin it out to 9000+ rpms is probly what did it to the main. Think about that crank was flexin out in the middle puttin extra pressure on the caps. I would have thought that the trans issue would have been picked up readin the data logs but i guess its not something you always look at, till now.
I have been a fan of both cleetus and Steves Morris YT for a many years. I think he should stay with the SMX for the drag and drive and have Steve build a billet big block for the Camaro. But I doubt Steve would want to do this after cleetus bad mouthed his SMX. I won't be surprised if Steve was sorry he sold cleetus the SMX now. I have LOST a lot of respect for cleetus because of his comments. And have gained respect for Steve Morris for loyalty to his customers, his taking responsibility when he should, his engine building skills. his not bad mouthing anybody, and as a family man and father. I have watched cleetus abuse every vehicle he has and I mean EVERY Vehicle. (his plane being the exception). That is probably good for getting views on his YT channel. But it's hell on the Vehicles. And dangerous as hell when he lets it loose on public roads! I don't think cleetus has much natural mechanical ability or understanding. If he wants to be running with the big Dogs doing 6 second passed then he needs to up his maintance game. Or just turn down the RPM and Boost on the SMX and run 8.50s. then stuff should last a long time.
You would be insane to move away from the smx. Steve and his engines are second to none. That would be a real slap in his face, you could clearly see he was just as much if not more so upset about it then you was....
He would still have a steve morris engine. Just not the smx. The old engine he ran was from steve morris also. SMX is a beast but also a pain in the ass. They literally can’t even work on it or swap anything without steve because only certain parts work and steve has to always bring them the parts
@@bmxican0704 He doesn't HAVE to bring them parts. He has them in stock, most of them, and they just don't buy it until they need it and they usually need it RIGHT NOW. Not 2-3 days of shipping later. The only way to make that happen is for Steve or one of his employees to hand deliver it. Cleeter could easily buy 2 of the exact same engine and have spare parts for literally anything. I mean he's literally pushing this thing to its limits every pass.
@@bmxican0704agree, if they had a full time engine person the smx is awesome. but I think a lot of the issues is mullet being a heavy arse car that forces that engine to live on the edge every second.
@@sirmonkey1985 yeah it definitely had nothing to do with spinning it 9500+rpm and then making 200mph passes on an engine that is running off load balance causing rod tensions and compression to be completely thrown off. Dealing with 7000hp compressors, I can tell you if your rod tension and compression is off on one cylinder even 4 foot wide main caps wont survive at 900rpm.
Stick with the smx and perform meticulous maintenance on it. It will definitely last and have minimal issues if it’s treated as a top tier engine. Don’t treat it like a clapped out 350 😂
That goes completely against this channel 😂 have you not seen Ruby shoved in a corner, dale truck, blue f150 now, Supra, and a bunch others. All these cars are meant to get used and abused
"Look how they massacred my boy" -Steve And he still has a smile on his face. Everybody sees the videos of cars making pass after pass, but you rarely see the trials and tribulations as close up as this. Thanks for the entertainment Cleet and crew!
NEW SMX!!!!!! JUST PULL THE TRIGGER! Also need a full inspection in-between every big event. Including dropping pan and checking mains. Pulling valve covers. Make a list so everything gets checked no matter what. Please keep the smx and keep Steve on your team. What other builders driving 4 hours instantly to try to help. Look at how good his process is on the new blocks he is pushing out.
Definitely need to do this after runs this is why things are breaking because no one is doing a tear down on the engine after runs its race car life and it needs to be done.
That pretty much what street outlaws do, they check everything just about after every other pass. Just have to maintain it a little better and they’ll be golden
This whole video just goes to show how badass that SMX engine really is, multiple 9k rpm runs and all that breakers is a lifter, and then it goes and does a 7.6, what a well built and well engineered engine
Not to mention cleetus doing donut burnouts, then vibrating the living hell out of it running those messed up tires down the track when he was preparing for this sick week. I'd say it's 100% cleetus fault, and i love the guy but he's kinda dumb sometimes with more money than brains occasionally lol. Pretty sure other guys with the smx probably aren't doing what damaging things cleetus does. I REALLY hope he takes a lot better care of Leroy and the new Camaro race cars
@@lightning1896 And running it multiple runs banging on the traction control the whole run. Steve did a video a bout how bad that exact thing is a while back.
The fact that many drag and drive set ups use SMX engines and complete race week after race week says a lot about Steve Morris Engines! One customer drives from Canada close to 3000 miles then completes the week and drives 3000 miles home! Tom Bailey has SMX engines in two cars and prior to the fire causing gremlins he ran 5 second passes! That engine had a catastrophic failure on Steve and because of that he gave you a huge discount, I think it’s a individual problem with that specific engine and if you get with Steve he can design a engine program tailored to Mullet! Be it a Hemi or Coyote or just a seven second conventional big block! Or pay $100,000 for a brand new SMX and enjoy the proven reliability that tons of customers are enjoying like that Green Monte Carlo that weighs more than mullet and ran a six today!
Nah. Cleet's just being stupid and doing stupid shit with the SMX. At the level the SMX performs at, it tolerates a *little* stupidity, but not what Cleet's tossing at it.
I know it's hindsight but if you are going to be running the engine for MUCH longer periods than you normally do, before a long event, wouldn't you pop the valve covers and drop the pan to do a quick torque check? Take the intake off and use a borescope to check the cam lobes? Or use a stethoscope to give it a close listen?
Got about halfway through this video and then started reading the comments. I was shocked that Garret appeared to be throwing Steve under the bus. So I skipped to the last 5 minutes. My thoughts? McFarland Racing has always been a poorly run team. They need a dedicated crew chief for each of the big boy cars. They need safety checklists (saw another screwdriver bouncing around Mullet's cockpit on the 6.68 pass). They need regular teardowns and preventative maintenance. I think Jackstand has the ability to make all that happen, but maybe it's not up to him. All that said, I didn't get the feeling Garret was throwing Steve under the bus. He took some responsibility for his improper treatment of his equipment, and he praised Steve for trying to help them. Maybe I'm wrong, and if Garrett does stab Steve in the back I'll never watch a Cleetus video again, but for now it really didn't feel like that IMO.
If anything this proves the reliability of the SMX. Even at 7/8ths of its total power is still runs a DEEP 7 and holds up on road driving. Steve is an absolute legend!
All the damage to the SMX was started during those burnouts weeks prior. Dont take a drag car to a burnout pit and maybe it would last longer. Steve said himself he's never seen a main cap cracked, you're the first guy to do donuts with his engine.
Gotta love Steve. Every time he's in a video in a fun way or a not so fun way he puts a smile on my face. He very obviously puts out the best of the best engines. There is no way anything lesser would have held up for a 7.61 ET with so much going on. Praying the best for Steve and yalls relationship going forward! Maybe the ol scratch and dent SMX goes in eagle......?
I cannot get over the sparkle you put in Sam's eyes while he is lookin at you! That man admires you SO MUCH! He ENJOYS you! Your company, family, friends and FUN! It is just a JOY to watch you and the guys have fun!
Garrett I've been so impressed with your aviation side as to your attitude toward your flying endeavor's. I'm a pilot with just north of 14000 hrs in RW and FW.. I was worried when you started the flying thing but you impressed me with your safety first attitude. Now treat Mullet with the same respect as to exceeding limits, Pre and post race inspections and things might last a little longer. Everything has limits. Its not a Steve problem but a Cleet problem. Sorry to be blunt but Thats the way I see it.Oh yea, I flew a MD E model for 14 years. Keep it up Loyal follower on both the race and aviation side Denny
There's wisdom in that Denny. People will get in and drive things that are ready to fall apart, doing the same with aircraft is usually, well, lets say the landings are rather difficult.
I wouldn't blow Steve Morris off. Great product Great customer service. You will never find a better motor builder that has your back like Steve. The disappointment in his face when he saw the mane caps. He knew why Thay failed...
@@warrenmichael918 at the end of the video he talks about maybe moving away from the smx engine. I don't think the smx is the problem, it looks like it runs just fine with all the abuse.

Never in my life did I think I would see Cleetus and his team in my home area of bfe illinois, let alone in Byron. I hope yall enjoyed the visit. It's crazy to see the steam of the power plant in the background I see that every day just about.
Its not the car its the team. You need a crew chief and more mechanics in the shop. Your team is amazing and makes great content and can build very nice cars. But the maintenance is more then what you guys can keep up with. Bigger team for the dedicated race crew if you want to stay in the 6s
This , there jumping from 1 thing to another , they will have these problems with the new car too . Having too much money too and no mechanical sympathy doing doughnuts in a dedicated drag rig. finding so many cracked welds , broken sensors, Loose wires, missing fittings, loose bolts goes on and on
@@Huda88754 Honestly. now i never have a issue with cleet, but doing burnouts in mullet - then when it fails, acts all surprised. Like, how the fuck did you not expect something like that to happen? Cracked welds, the trans having problems - and now the engine. It clearly shows he has NO mechanical sympathy (all the other drag cars enter the chat, let alone all the VICs he wrecked that could've been reliable dailies for other people). something needs to change, he has no right to blame Steve or the SMX, especially when the SMX is working fine in heavier vehicles than mullet, and going FASTER, from what I heard. Maybe maintain your shit better, and then if it still fails, then you have the right to complain. Plain and simple. And I'm rather disappointed he hasn't said a word since the video came out, and the backlash that followed his words. Cleet? I'm disappointed.
They are TH-camrs at the end of the day😂😂😂😂this isn’t an actual series race team talking about needing a crew chief this isn’t nascar obviously he wants his team to be surrounded by the people he’s always around
Don’t give up on the SMX. It had some memorable runs and numbers and it was fun to watch y’all push it to past its limits. Just keep at it…I enjoy watching you guys not just win, but also how you push yourselves beyond established standards. It’s quite inspiring.
It's not the motor so much as the car it's in. The new car looks sml/ls whatever based, and I'm sure a load more ridgid than mullet. Hard tire shakes and snap revs are murder on every component in a car.
I've been a HUGE cleeter supporter. The ending of this video comes across as a huge whiner not getting his way. His team does a great job but the fact he can't look inward speaks volumes. In fact, the amount of wheel shake and the amount of forces put apoin the thust bearing on a long wheel base car such as mullet is incredable! He then wonders why things break when he runs WITH TIRES HE DID A BURNOUT WITH!!! This may have well been the cause of the broken main caps. My god man...... Get it together!!!!!
@@cbradley4466 I wouldn't have the patience to discuss that situation in front of a camera. There's nothing worse than mechanical failure due to your negligence. Not to mention that these famous TH-camrs know there are crazy fans that will twist their words over the smallest misspoken thing
Steve Morris drives 4 hours to help you out, takes apart an engine that you admitted to abusing, and then you have the audacity to say that you might drop his engines? WHAT. THE. FUCK? I normally support just about everything you and the Freedom crew do. But that's just doing Steve dirty right there, especially after all the support he's given you over the years. The big part of the problems you're having with engines is not doing proper maintenance before/during/after a big event or drag races. You run an engine on multiple passes, take it on long events, then put it away. No oil changes, spark plug changes, minor/major rebuilds. You're riding the horse hard and putting it away wet. That's on you, and no one else.
Steve Morris has been great to you guys and seems like one of the best in the business, so I hope that you stay with him. I think the next level for you guys is to rebuild your motors inbetween races like the factory guys. Time to expand the team and invest in a few more tools for the shop and get those motors specced after every event. Then you would know if that motor has been hurt for a while before finding the problems.
The damn thing hasn’t managed to make it to enough passes once yet for new springs or a rack or any of the maintenance intervals before having to be replaced from either breaking and having to be replaced early or something else failing and having to go back to steve instead
@@54racemanHis goals just aren't realistic for that chassis and he's pushing the engine too hard! He's pushing more boost and turning it higher RPM's than Steve ever recommended! With the chassis he needs to push ~4000hp and he's losing to others pushing ~3000hp! (iE Snot Rocket!) Yeah he's disappointed and doesn't want to be done with the week on day 2, he said it himself that he's not blaming Steve and yet the comment section is going wild saying Cleet is blaming Steve and others are even blaming Steve themselves! You can't knowingly push an engine like that THAT hard with a dead cylinder (not to mention knowing the cam is smacking the lifter as well)! They turned the car around way too quickly and wanted to win overall without even thinking! It sucks but the only person to blame is himself..... (And that's not being said with hostility.... I'd love to see him ease up and go back to the basics so he can be back mingling with fans instead of being buried in the car the entire time! I liked it much better when it was him and Bret and the biggest struggle was getting caught in a downpour in Leroy! Make Mullet a 8.0 or 8.5 drag and drive monster and let Eagle and LeRoy go rounds at World Cup and FL/TK2k! Bring Ruby and the other guys on these drag and drives, just have fun! Don't have to be number one in them all!
you act like he has a choice, plenty of people complain about his engines, when you ask him if the push rods should hit the head in the pushrod ports and he responds "itll work itself clear" youd lose alot of hope in that "engine builder"
They are supposed to have them listed and or available to view. If the state or osha came in they would have been shut down the elevator without the cert lol
Oh wow that SMX engine is insane. Putting out 4000hp when it works and when several things are broken still makes a 7second pass. Thats just a real indication how strong that engine is. Im amazed. Also wonderful video as always!!!
Incredible that the motor refuses to give up and massive props to Steve for building these beast units, this isn't his fault. Cleet really needs to step up his maintenance game. He's upset about parts that have been broken for an unknown amount of time but this ain't a heads/cam LS. At 4000+ hp it *needs* to be torn down and inspected after every event. He runs the car full blast at an event, parks it with maybe an oil change, pulls it out a few days before the next race, then gets blindsided by issues that are totally preventable/fixable but didn't know because he doesn't pull it apart until after it explodes. I love the channel, Cleet, the guys, and the cars but it hurts to see him treat his equipment this way.
Steve Morris is a legend. How many engine builders would tell you to make another pass on 7 cylinders and then drive up and help you fix it. Cleet you will figure out a game plan for mullet and it will be back better than ever.
I think they should've chiseled the stuck lifter out,it already started coming apart during the welding, may as well finished it off, fished it out and replaced it. Hindsight is always 💯👍 but Wow 😮 a cracked main cap?!? She took some serious thrust movement!😮 Next! Onward and upward!
you break a crank 'maincap' when you run an engine on 7 cylinders. A crankshaft is carefully balanced, it's balanced to run on the amount of cylinders the engine has, run it on less for long enough and this happens. The cam lobes being completely worn is something that comes up in regular maintenance. It's a racecar, you're supposed to pull apart and inspect stuff like this after every event.
Imagine the vacuum in the cyl of the dead cyl. if they ran it with the spark plug still in. That seems like it would put some serious strain on an engine running that many R's with the valves closed. I'm not an engineer or race engine builder but it seems like that would load the rod, crank, etc. if the plug was in.
@@mrjelly0077 Not when a valve stays open like they mentioned. It throws the crankshaft out of balance everytime a compression or ignition stroke happens and actual forse is supposed to be applied to the crank from that piston.
Do you notice the Monte Carlo guy he's always under the hood and his 4200 lbs car runs in the 6s or low 7s. Its how your supposed to look after a race engine.
I am glad to see I am not the only one impressed by Steve Morris and his motor. 7 cylinders, untold internal destruction, and still ran like a tank. Very very cool!
I like cleetus and the guys just as much as anybody else but you can’t really put the blame on SMX for this. It’s a beast engine. The abuse and lack of inspection/maintenance after big events takes a toll. It’s also no secret that this engine was used and went through hell and back while in this car. It’s a huge testament to Steve and his engines. I really like the relationship cleet has with Steve and the dedication Steve has to his customers, I’d really hate to see Cleetus throw that away because he made mistakes with this motor.
The little shenanigans really makes it for me! From Mr. Sam’s “you know better” about them asking him if he chicken foot, to auditing the elevator certificates and even them admiring the tow truck across the road! Its all golden characters all around!
Can we take a moment to thanks Steve and SMX durability, god damn, that engine could still make passes, that is amazing engineering, and what a legend, drives down to help out, even shows the guys some cool tricks for lifter removal, and lifter operations, the racing community needs more of SMX
Please don’t leave steve and the SMX. I used to dream of SMXs when i was younger. Thought they were a gimmick and unreal with how insane they were until you started running one. As everyone else has said, Steve clearly cares about his product, and your relations. I really hope you keep that around. After-all, once the Camaro is done, will Mullet really be in the prime light like it is right now? It wont be the car trying to beat everyone out there anymore. The Camaro will be..
Steve has proven time and time again that not only is he a stand up guy but the man knows how to build and engine that being said anything making that much power with that much weight behind it getting as many consecutive passes as mullet sees its going to break that's the name of the game. The limits at which the SMX engines perform at are just incredible.
I'm pretty sure it getting the piss kicked out of it isn't the engine builder's fault with the power levels they are making with it and lack of a real tear down inspection and doing things last minute to make sure it is ready
Love how Mr Sam was riding with his Altoids, phone, and wallet. Straight cruising. Happy birthday gramps. Going to buy your products right now. Proud of what this channel has built.

Exactly what popped into my head hell cleetus was rethinking all his decisions in life just riding with him on the test drive of the truck
Yes exactly and they were telling him to lift!
Me too!!!!
😂 that smile on his face in the marauder when they all got nervous 😅
@apex9177 it's not a limiter, it's more of a suggestion box.. if the valves aren't floating, is it really a burnout?
Cleet make sure you guys are using a shielded cable for your drive shaft speed sensor, my drive shaft data looked exactly the same, then I ran a shielded cable right from the sensor to the Holley, and grounded the shielding on the Holley -5V rail and now the data is clean.
This 100% gotta run shielded cable
It was a stereo problem with older ignition systems.
Quality cable for sensitive Signal wires
Agreed, all of those low voltage hall effect sensors need to be shielded because the smallest amount of noise is huge relative to the signal strength.
Glad to see everybody seeing this for what it is. Your engine builder has your back, maybe you could have his. Not maintaining your vehicles is not Steve’s fault.
This is Garrett Mitchell in a nutshell.
100%
All of this by people who probably don't maintain damn near a single thing they own 🤷🏼♂️
One are you an employee of Garrett's? If not how do you truly know that he doesn't do the maintenance just because it's not on camera doesn't mean it's not getting done car parts break it happens as for the trans not having second in the moment of ripping down the drag strip he's not looking at what gear it's going in some people just jump all over someone without knowing behind the scenes

@kylegoes8119 true , was a mistake on my part. Thanks for the clarification
Cant wait for eagle to take his spot tho ❤

Plenty of Steve’s engines out there running strong. This is on Garrett and his team.
man i understand frustrations being on the road, but this one is absolutely on y'all. that SMX *carried* in a way that most engines would have just thrown rods through the block. Steve deserves his flowers for the level of professionalism and care he puts into everything he touches, this was absolutely user error (if the first ever broken maincap is anything to go by)
i'ma be honest, if y'all get an actual good checklist system of full teardown preventative maintenance going for that SMX, she'll take you close to 5's. and it'll be a great jumping off point for Eagle when you finally get behind the wheel on that beast
Running a 7.61 on 7 cylinders with all that carnage is insane. A lesser engine would have let go a long time ago. SMX engine is incredible.
And Cleet then throws Steve under the bus. Despite everything being down to lack of maintenance, negligence and pure abuse.
Definitely bitched about the motor didn't he!
@steveshortt90 Even though his old brodix block was blowing up at 50-60% of the hp the SMX can take 24/7.
That was a stupid take by him and a huge insult to Steve.
Yeah I dont blame the SMX one bit
I haven't even finished the video, but I can't fathom why you would run that hurt engine. Content is the only thing I can think of.
Cleet and the boys have got to own this one. Lack of the maintenance and checks required for an engine of that level. Complete an a-z checklist every 2 passes minimum no exceptions. Look at the other 3 Smx cars doing serious numbers with little drama.
Yeah a real lack of maturity with the "we didn't do anything to maintain this, then beat on it with 7 cylinders, now it blew up, so it's time for a change because we should win every event"
texas speed found that out.
pete harrel is in the process of finding it out
It is good to get in business with garret initially, but their mentality in the shop as far as being able to maintain that level of drive train is..... far below the requirement.
💯
He's not getting rid of the smx because it keeps breaking due to neglect. The problem is with mullets chassis and suspension, it cant put down the power the smx makes. Not to mention that the smx forced him in to a higher class and mullet just isn't competitive in that class. He needs a different engine to match what the chassis is capable of because atm the smx is too much for mullet to handle.
@@aidenchristiansen5776 U sure a smaller, bur still larger than 427 engine would allow him into a different class? I thought once you go big block, you're in the big boy classes regardless of engine size

Have to agree, maybe didn't realise how it came across, but the engine failure was 100% his fault.
Not to mention the massive discount he got on it, as it was literally out of Steve’s personal car. Race engines need maintenance, not just fresh oil

Yup, needs a top fuel maintenance approach for those hemi style engines 👌
100% cleets responsible for not taking care of the motor after he broke it over and over again. Props too steve.

Without a doubt they turned that car around way too fast and didn't do the due diligence after the abuse he subjected it to in Indy. I doubt Eagle is getting a SM built engine as I believe they are planning on more power than anything (I know of anyway) that SM currently builds!

Steve actually said in his video it should have still run 6.80s on 7 lol I think it would have it it could build boost on the line

Tom Bailey has SMX engines in two cars and prior to the fire causing gremlins he ran 5 second passes!

Cleet really needs to step up his maintenance game. He's upset about parts that have been broken for an unknown amount of time but this ain't a heads/cam LS. At 4000+ hp it *needs* to be torn down and inspected after every event.

Holy cow! That engine was sent through the wringer!! That engine is truly one of a kind! Steve morris! You got a talent/ skill!
you break a crank 'maincap' when you run an engine on 7 cylinders.
I was wondering about that. It's a compression stroke every stroke lol
Bingo!! They even said it was vibrating when they were going down the highway…. The ran 7 second passes on it. That’s how you break main caps.

Don't forget the pants on hangers at the back window
I agree with everyone buy a new SMX instead don’t go back to the big block Steve is incredible and is always there to help ! He’s a asset to this channel
Shielded sensor wire. Ground one end of the shield, coild and tape back the other end. Do not ground both ends. I work in process controls and automation, and I deal with low voltage signal wire for DCS/PLC systems. Chances are that this is why you have a dirty signal.
Wanted to say this too, see it alot in automation. One.... End..... Only..... lol
