    Good that your car wasn’t the initial Guinea pig. I have an interesting windshield story. My model 3 is 4 years old, got it during their “production hell” time period. When delivered, I noticed an etching on the corner interior of the glass. I still took delivery and the technician noted the defect in the system and recommended me to just wait maybe a year to replace it due to limited spare parts. A year later, and after a rock chip I had it replaced by Tesla under warranty, no questions asked! They kept their promise to replace it at zero cost to me.

    I used to work for Progressive doing auto claims. Next time just file a claim then have everything fixed at Tesla and then turn in the bill to Progressive. Before you have it fixed, call and speak with the adjuster and let them know what you're doing so they can document the file.. easy peezy. Progressive will reimburse you for the camera calibration. Just email the bill to them.
    Great video!!

    • @SaraJAwesome

      Thank you 🙏 Yes, that’s what they said to do. But I also have to pay Tesla the $1,000 then wait for the check from Progressive. So it just seemed like too much trouble. This was definitely the easier route. Thankfully Safelite actually did a great job.

    My insurance guy gave me a tip. Set your comprehensive deductible to the lowest your insurance company will allow (Tesla insurance will go down to $100). It was only about $10/month increase to go from $1000 to $100. It sounds like you might be replacing your windshield often due to the roads you travel on.

    • @SaraJAwesome
      @SaraJAwesome  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very good advice! I need to do that. I was trying to be cheap, but it’s not worth it. I know it will get broken again.

    Excellent, very informative video. Thank you!
    I too had to replace the windshield on my 22 MY. I took it to our local Tesla SC; $1,274 for replacing it.
    I also had to replace the ceramic-30 window film installed on the windshield (it keeps a lot of the heat out.) Total replacement cost windshield and film: $1,500+.
    Perhaps other have commented on another option: auto insurance glass coverage. I paid $0 out-of-pocket for these repairs because I added Safety Glass Coverage for my Tesla to my auto insurance policy. It costs $232/year WITH NO DEDUCTIBLE!
    It covers every piece of glass on my Tesla from headlight to windshield to windows to roof (much pricier to replace) to mirrors, and window film replacement also. And no questions asked, no hassle whatsoever.

    Similar situation when I replaced the windshield in our 2021 Y. Initially went to the Tesla app and scheduled the repair and got a date for the repair, then 2 days later they called and said "we don't do glass replacement." They told me they usually refer people to Sir Glass or Safelite. So I set it up with Sir Glass. Then we had to wait a month for the shop to get the glass from Tesla. Total cost was $1495 for the windshield and $500 for the install. Progressive paid everything above my deductible. In Oregon, you can take your car to any repair shop you choose...not sure it that is the same in Texas. So I didn't have to get an ok from Progressive, just had to inform them of my decision. Sure was a relief tho. Oh, btw, you can do the re-calibration as you drive the car home from your appointment. Car icon->Service->Camera Calibration->Clear calibration, then the car recalibrates as you drive. Takes about 15-20 minutes.

    Your "reaction" to finding out your windshield would be the first was exactly what mine was as I watched you. Priceless. Glad it was done by someone with experience.
    Your puppy was sweet as heck. So interested in what you were doing but after the rain...sleepy time.
    Glad this all worked out. Hope your Texas highway doesn't conspire again against your beautiful new pristine windshield.

    Getting mine replaced next week. Using Tesla insurance. Was quoted $1206 for the windshield replacement, Tesla insurance brought it down to $798. I have a $1k deductible, but I dropped it to $500. Too little, too late. Safelite wouldn't touch my '21 M3. I'm in Fort Worth.

    How timely! My Model 3 got hit by a rock 2 months ago, I didn't realize I had to fill it fast, a few days later a big crack grew. Cost $1540 CAD to replace it. My insurance deductible is $1000 (lowest!). Then, last week another big loud hit on the highway! Crack formed in minutes!!!
    I've driven for 20+ years and never had to replace windshield ever. Now twice in a year.
    Forums state many Model 3 owners also had this happen. Are Tesla's glass more fragile?
    I'm looking into protective films.

    • @SaraJAwesome
      @SaraJAwesome  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s horrible. Same thing basically happens to me. I got so many chips. I’ve never got chips like this in any other car. I don’t understand it. I don’t know if it’s thinner glass or the shape of the car that scoops up rocks and throws them right on the glass. But most people in my city have broken windshields on other cars too so I know our roads are a main factor for sure.

  • @danoc51

    I cracked my Model Y windshield. I called my insurance agent - State Farm - and they arranged to have the windshield changed at my home. All I paid was the $100 deductible. I live in California...perhaps insurance companies are under different laws in other states.

    • @SaraJAwesome
      @SaraJAwesome  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great instructional video SaraJ. Especially with vehicles that have a large windshield Tesla/Lucid. Would work with Tesla to replace windshield. Safelite does a reasonable install, but not perfect especially when it comes to exterior trim. In fact they often do not reinstall any exterior trim. Keep in mind that Tesla is working on windshield improvements.

    • @SaraJAwesome
      @SaraJAwesome  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m not sure what you mean by trim. There was trim covering the Winshield before or after install. It’s actually very easy to replace Tesla glass with no trim removal necessary from what I can tell. I could be wrong, but I don’t see any.

    Cracked windshields suck! I had to pick up my Model 5 hours from my location or get it delivered for an extra 750. I thought I would just go picked it up and save a bit of money but a rock hit the top glass and chipped it. It ended up cracking. Now it’s gonna be 1700 to get it replaced from Tesla! After i get it replaced imma put a bit of film on the front portion to see if that gives it any perfection.

    Did you have your cameras calibrated? Was calibration covered by your insurance or did you have to pay out of pocket? How much did Tesla charge to recalibrate the cameras?

    • @SaraJAwesome
      @SaraJAwesome  ปีที่แล้ว

      At this time, I calibrated them myself. But now there are some serious questions I have about that, even though Tesla told me how to do it and it was easy. I’m wondering if they told me correctly. Now, safelite does the calibration and it is included. Back then they did not do the calibration yet. I will make an updated video when I can find out correct and concrete information. Because I’ve been told 4 different things now between tesla and Safelite. BUT so far I have had good service overall with Safelite. I trust them , but they are still learning about teslas.

    I had my tires replaced at a local tire shop which usually does my non-tesla vehicles. The were able to put the new tires on but unable to do a wheel alignment and told me I will have to take it to the service center. As more and more people buy Tesla’s the auto repair industry has to catch up.

      I drove for a few days before I recalibrated the cameras and I had no issues at all. No ghost braking or anything. But probably best to recalibrate just in case. You never know what it misjudge not being properly calibrated. But I didn’t notice any difference.

  • @olvera411
    @olvera411 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Did you have to make a separate appointment with Tesla to calibrate your camera? I just got mine replaced in Oregon by Safelite and they calibrated the camera at Safelite. I actually talked to the tech about the calibration because tesla told me I could do it easily on my own. He said they actually hook up a computer and have the external targets they aim at to make sure the camera is at the right angle. There is a screw on the camera that adjusts the height and angle of the camera than they do the self-calibration method. They gave me a calibration certification also.

In my opinion, a Tesla hater had to send me a bad spell out of pure jealousy of such a beautiful car. 😀😂🤣. • @SaraJAwesome
      @SaraJAwesome  ปีที่แล้ว

      It won’t void the warranty as far as I know. Tesla even tells a lot of customers to get it done at safelite. And when you void the warranty for the car, it’s only for what part of the car is effected. Not the entire car warranty. And since the windshield doesn’t mess with anything, it doesn’t really pose a risk to voiding any warranty.

Maybe all of my other cars had some kind of built-in factory UV protection and so I never noticed it but on my MYP I notice it every time during this last month that I’ve had the car. I have 30% ceramic tint on my front windows and am now seriously thinking of getting 70% ceramic tint on the windshield as the heat it produces is really annoying.

    • @SaraJAwesome
      @SaraJAwesome  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, kind of. They actually subcontract some things. Like cameras for example. They have them put their logo on it for them. Tesla mobile service told me this when my camera had a manufacturer defect and failed. They said the cameras sucked so they contracted a new company to make them. So I actually have two different OEM cameras on my car, from two different manufacturers that are not Tesla but installed by Tesla at factory. Safelite actually orders the glass from Tesla directly. But there are other non OEM windshield manufacturers for Tesla that Tesla does NOT approve of.. so be sure to tell Safelite you only want OEM glass.

    Best of luck!

    Great Video. I have Progressive also and good to know about this. I would have thought the deductible would have been waived because your crack was in "line of sight". Most insurance companies waive the deductible when it's broke like this, especially when you use one of their providers. Could be a state thing though...

    I am in the same exact boat! So glad your experience with Safelite was good. However what is keeping me from replacing my Y windshield with Safelite is apparently you have to recalibrate the cameras and Safelite is telling me that Tesla has to do it, however, they say they will be able to do this at the end of Sept 2022. What was your experience after getting the windshield replaced with Safelite and using AutoPilot or FSD features? - Fellow Houston Driver working with Safelite in Webster near NASA.

      I have a resolution for you! I’m releasing the video this week on how to calibrate your own cameras! For free! It’s so easy, and I thought it was so complicated!!!! Just let safelite do the replacement and then you recalibrate the autopilot cameras when you pick it up. It takes 2 seconds to do it. ;) Also, don’t worry. I talked to Tesla and they told me this way is literally all it is. And tesla would charge us $20 to do it.

I wish I knew BEFORE I released this windshield video, but unfortunately I myself didn’t get an answer until after I had released it. I had just planned on Tesla doing it and making a video. So it’s that easy! One button then they recalibrate while you drive. It tells you when it’s done too. ;)

    Then they charged me about $1,000 more every 6 months when I bought my Model Y for a claim on a moving accident. Would not adjust the claim. In the UK stone chip and need a replacement. Upside most insurers here only charge small amount - around $100, downside there are zero replacement windshields in the UK. Nada, none, zilch. I know they have the glass as thin as possible to reduce weight but basically you give a model 3 a dirty look and it will scratch or dent. I love my car but it is like driving a porcelain doll at 70 miles per hour.

      I had a similar experience last month at Safelite for my model 3. If I did not know that my windshield was replaced I would not know. The state inspection sticker does not even look different after being transferred nor does a town sticker needed to enter our recycling center. The only clue was that they drove it for a few miles to calibrate the cameras. They had the car for about 3-4 hours and I took Lyft home and a friend drive me back later.

    Tesla is supposed to be the only one to service their own vehicles right? Early on when Teslas started getting bigger they tried to replace their own windshields in house. Crates of glass in the deanships. Trained the techs on how to do it. They learned fast that it isn't that easy to replace unless your are experienced in auto glass. Even if its serviced at Tesla they call a auto glass company to come do the work in my experience.

    What a rigamarole, Sara. Safelite has always done a great job replacing numerous windshields for me… but not (yet) for my Tesla. BTW, I'm sure you figured out it's easy enough to recalibrate your cameras, right? I'd guess the price quotes differed because of what Tesla charges a 3rd party to supply the windshield. In house, of course, they're not charging that markup. I enjoyed seeing Lady Stella! I assume you've got a setup to keep her comfortable and safe in the back seat when you take her with you in the car, true? Yeah, I've recalibrated mine. Really easy: the car does all the work. You just have to drive. ;) Curious if your new windshield has the little heater wires in front of the camera housing? I guess so if it's a Tesla windshield but I always wondered if Safelite would actually hook those up. Also, I'm in FL and insurance companies are not allowed to charge a dedictible for windshields here. I wonder how that works if you want to pick your own place to do the work though: there may be some restrictions since insurance companies are forced to cover the full cost?
