Life is a series of calculated risks; if you're taking a risk on something you enjoy, adds value to your life, and can afford to lose, then it may be a risk worth taking (that's life!). Like you said, be thoughtful and educate yourself but also be honest with yourself and acknowledge your motives and expectations.

I learned my lesson of FOMO when it came to funko pops. While I still pick up on pops here and there, it wasn't like how I was back in 2018 where I went to the extreme just to get a pop. What snapped me out of that funk was realizing that the item will always be there. There will always be restocks. I will always find some way to get what I'm looking for in the end. So with pokemon, I took that to heart and just pick up with whatever is within my means. I learned to stop hoarding and live to realize that my collection can benefit someone so there's no loss in selling or trading away. I focused on a niche that made me enjoy collecting so much more as it poses as a long term challenge to just enjoy the process. At the end of the day, I realized that these cards or anything I collect will just end up in a binder or ETB box to collect dust so why not just take my time and just go with it.
Idk how yall can manage to keep sealed product sealed tho, I just need to rip packs, lol. Otherwise, I'm all for keeping singles than product.

This was just what I needed to hear right now. I'm glad the anxiety is normal as I look at every cupboard and storage space in my house overflowing with boxes of cards. Then I realised which car I could own right now instead of driving a 20 year old Mazda :) Best Pokevideo I've watched since Rattle CSI. Engaging at this length. Appreciate your real talk mate down here in New Zealand

Your money is far better being in Pokemon cards than in monthly payments for cars/designer clothes/eating out/hangovers.. It is Cardboard Gold compared to some of the trash NFT collections who will happily sing you a song of rarity & scarcity before running off with your cash/crypto

I personally have never cared about stocks or investing. I have always wanted to have a passion for a hobby or collecting. Since I found Pokémon again, I now have a hobby , I collect , I invest and I have a lot of fun. I have been focusing on work and my newborn lately but I know Pokemon is there and very excited to collect again and don’t regret anything ! Was able to have A good “savings” when I was ready to sell parts of my collection. Pokémon has been nothing but positives for me . And thanks for all you do jake

I believe for most cards, 2020-2021 is the highest peak they'll ever achieve (unlimited wotc, commons, uncommons, modern) but this is nowhere near the end for rare, scarce, and iconic cards :)

    • @wjw96

@@wjw96 I do agree to some point. But don't forget that during the hype people said prices would never go down this is the market now qoutes. And now its lower than before the hype. The truth is we just don't know anything can happen.

highly disagree if I was a collector I would pay a lot to obtain stuff, there are some cards that are truly rare and will have to be high prices because of scarcity, look at expedition cards raw cards are insane right now, well let’s look at the print of those compared to base set🤔 big collectors want that stuff🤩

Jake, you’re the only collectible therapist we have. It’s a hobby for the majority of us. It was said to me we’re miniature art collectors. Hobby that we pass on to the next generation. This hobby is my escape. It’s adventerous. It’s fun. Learning. sharing. Connecting.

11:33 - 12:26 speaks volumes. Your perspective on how and why you collect is very relatable. Something I try to keep in mind and tell myself. We can sometimes find ourselves losing touch with that because of market trends and the hype. Collect what you personally want in your collection, what you like, and what makes you happy. In doing that, you'll not only build a collection you enjoy owning, but you will have no regrets with what and how you collected. Appreciate your advice and perspective on the hobby!

Lovely talk Jake. You never give us blanket answers to live and act like robots. Instead you offer tools and the context of the environment we in. Some people might be mimicking plans and processes from others they see and you, but what I think you do which sets you a head from the rest is you encourage us to always apply it to our own situation and think it through ourselves so that it best fits us and it goes from X plan from someone to our own plan. This way we can go from puppets to masters and have our own voice.

I completely and totally forsee a 2-3 year period this decade where pokemon is in a bear market like 2010-2014. For that reason I've been trying to be smart about holding off on higher end items, only investing in scarcity and only buying things I truly like where I'd hold it to $0 anyway. So many people went all in during the hype and now regret it. Thankfully I found this channel early on when I reentered the hobby. Its all about minimizing risk but most importantly having fun in a financially thoughtful way. This instant stonk mindset nowadays is somewhat to blame. Rome wasn't built in a day.

I just noticed how I have a lot more enjoyment of what I have and my place of collecting when not comparing myself to others. Not going through Instagram, people showing off their stuff, how much they bought etc. makes me connect much more with my actual goals and not what I think I should do and have.

  • @pokebb
    @pokebb 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thanks for the thoughtful words Jake. I guess the regret will depend a lot on the reasons people are collecting. For the love of the hobby makes the regret exist less often or at least hurt a little less. Also need to look at the relationships and external benefits outside of the cards that add more to the experience. Hard to have regret when you have gratitude

In the short term all the bad investments we made will bring nothing but pain… but in the long term I believe a selective few set cards will rebound and continue to rise. There is no shame in selling at a loss or holding onto your bad investment. Live and learn

If you're collecting as a hobby and enjoy it then there's no stress. The problem is so many people flooded into the hobby to make a quick buck and are regretting overspending on cards that have fallen 30-40% since the ATH's we experienced last year.

I'm in the UK, where booster boxes aren't as low as they currently are in the US. About £99 - £120 is the current price per box here. For the past 4 weeks I've been investing in one booster box per week of sets that I genuinely think have the potential to rise in the future. Zero regrets here.

If Pokemon crashes I will buy every crystal, shining, gold star etc. possible until I'm leveraged $500k in debt. Just kidding, but I really wouldn't mind the market going down to pick up some amazing deals. As a 25 year old, I honestly do not see Pokemon going down anytime soon. If anything it will pick up as people in my generation (younger Millenials/older-gen z) gain earning potential.

I appreciate the insight of being cautious on investing in Pokemon but wished there were videos like this during the hype from all channels (including this one) which would have saved many people from having to hold the bag on the all time high prices. I myself made a few bad purchases based on the hype market during the high but have learned from those mistakes (and thankfully they weren't too expensive ones).

@@pokenomics You're right I do remember you saying not to buy in your videos but I meant the general tone of videos hyping up the market.
Don't get me wrong I really enjoy your channel and have been following it for almost a year now :) I just thought a video of this tone during the mania would have been nice. Definitely difficult to do during all that hype energy though of the bull market.

I will not regret buying pokemon cards because I am in it for the fun of collecting. If I make some money that is a bonus, but if I don't that is ok. I do it mostly for the fun of completing sets and for playing the game. It is always important to never get into collecting for the sole purpose of making money. Collecting should be mostly for fun and a learning experience.

The fact that Fiat currency is the worst thing to hold is not a difficult concept to understand. Are Pokémon cards the best thing to buy…no. A Business, Land, Stocks and Precious Metals are always better. That said, there’s nothing wrong devoting a small percentage of your funds on key collectibles that retain value. As far as thinking Pokémon won’t be as popular in 10 years I don’t believe this. It’s been going for 25 years and our generation will have more money in 10 years and more kids.

    • @JohnDoe_88

I expect the Pokemon concept to hit the metaverse and could be virtual and has the potential to be an insanely huge success. The concept of the original game boy game is still fun gameplay but putting that in a virtual world that you could feel your walking through could be insane for the franchise's success
