Hey Jake. So good to see you making content again. I am the father of 2 beautiful young women here in Australia who are loving building a collection. I take in a lot of content and many of the most sensible messages have come from you. Over the last couple of years you have helped me set a sound direction for a financially successful collection for the them, totally focussed on fun. Good on Ya and thanks!
I am super impressed how you can stay on top, for what seems to me at least, of major sub sections of the Pokémon market. I have no interest in modern, although I feel kind of tired about Pokémon in general. My interest only peaks when it comes to certain pieces for my collection. Yet, you are citing numbers for specific cards and seem to have a general bank of information to draw from. Is it not exhausting to learn it all? Do you find it more interesting looking at specific sections? I get super overwhelmed with people talking about modern Pokémon and just shut it out. If we can request videos, I would love one on Harry Potter, if I remember correctly, you did have some in your collection? It would be fun to hear your thoughts/show some pieces. Kind of how Raffi showed some Star Wars.
A lot of people who got in for the wrong reasons are leaving, selling multi slab lots on ebay for penny's, im loving it 😊. Anyone who is in it for the right reason won't care about the incoming dumps and price instability because they will still be happy in the turbulent times looking at there treasures and be even happier knowing they stayed true to themselves while the market corrects. The fundamentals havnt changed and the market will correct but will take a while now we've admitted recession & the need for money. Buy when there's blood in the street, even if it's your own. Meaning thies dumpers are transferring their wealth to us because of there fomo... I call it the pokemon halfing 😂❤
What do you think is the best way to move PSA 9 Ultra Modern cards that were grading misses? I have accrued some from multiple submissions and they just sit on eBay forever.
I've found people in these positions do best to offload in bulk to Whatnot streamers or having them available to sell at in person shows. While it sucks to take a loss on some cards, it's better to move them quick if the opportunity is available to use those funds towards other more worth while ventures. Keep in mind basic economics, right now supply for Modern 9s far outweighs the demand and in some scenarios it may even be better to crack and sell the card raw. Best of luck
Love that you it should be FUN its a game. Collecting is great right now because its not atrocious prices that make no sense and that every swing with these will always push and pull against each other. The desire for your card to go up and the desire for others to own the card. Only FOMO makes it lucrative and those are flashes like COVID. Anyways this is why I only collect. If we get another silly FOMO rush sure I'd sell it all since I know it will be worth half in 12 months and I can buy it all back again. Goal is generally just to break even overall.
Running a Pokémon reselling business is for sure scary, I am running basically the same business model you are but in the UK & have been doing so for 3 years with a lot of success. The difficult really has scaled up since 2021 which was a very favourable time to enter the market. Also considering the supply limitations, if you were doing this 3 years ago you would've seen first-hand how vintage supply has been squeezed over the past 12 months, arbitrage opportunities on many cards have largely disappeared but competition to both source & sell has increased around 45% per year!- As per eBay data But that said margins are still good relatively and sales data looks positive, a lot of cards are now starting to trend upwards to reflect the sourcing difficulty. I love this job and I starting the business at 24 was the best career decision I made, despite all my family thinking I was crazy.
