The Beatles - I'm Only Sleeping - Original Speed

  • Another vocal recording inexplicably sped up during mastering. From the August 1966 release of 'Revolver', "I'm Only Sleeping" is presented here with the vocal tracks at the original recorded speed superimposed with ALL backward guitar inclusions from various US, UK mono and stereo mixes. You will not find all of these backwards guitar snippets together anywhere else, for what it's worth. You're welcome.
    Again, for those who question whether the final mix recording was pitched at various speeds, this from an April 29, 1966 entry in the EMI studio logs ('The Beatles Recording Sessions'): "After 'Eleanor Rigby' John overdubbed his lead vocal onto the tape of the previously recorded 'I'm Only Sleeping' [rhythm track]. It was the first of three superimposition sessions for the song. On this occasion the tape machine was run at 45 cycles instead of 50, thus speeding up John's voice quite considerably on playback. Just to complicate matters further, the rhythm track onto which John's vocal was superimposed was taped at 56 cycles and played back at 47 3/4." The final mixes are presented here with the vocals in their native state.

    Is it me or does Paul pick up on the word "stream" in the line "float up stream..." - sounds more like his voice on the high note than John. Maybe it's the two of them, and Paul's voice just overrides...

    John Lennon intentionally tracked his vocals at a slower speed to achieve the strange timbre heard in the final release. The instruments were recorded then slowed down for vocal tracking. They did something similar on Rain, where the song was recorded very quick then slowed down.
    Lennon would later do this same technique on Lucy In the Sky to achieve the ethereal vocals for that song.

      Tim Cox Right. Most followers know how and why they did it, the studio experiments and all ("Hey, I found a way to make a tape loop."). But I'd always hated that many of their earlier final mixes often sounded unnaturally pitched forward (sped up), 'She Loves You' and 'I'll Get You' being particularly egregious. Most of us who've heard everything from them, especially interviews, become familiar with their voices, and it does bother some of us to hear them sped up, for whatever reason. These are just a composite of several final mixes pitched to his natural recorded voice, artistic liberties, if you will.

    • @joepermenter7228
      @joepermenter7228 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tim Cox Just to expand upon what you said, You're almost correct. The comparison to rain is accurate. The track we're listening to was intentionally sped up on vocal while simultaneously the guitars (already recorded) we're re-fed through the machine and looped at 3/4 speed backward. So when they mixed the final version they slowed down the vocal and sped up the backward guitar in order to balance the tempo. Thus brilliantly arranging mix and master. Inventing that line of thought most likely. They only recorded slowed down/ sped up mixes on rain before reigning in the theory on revolver's I'm only sleeping and Tomorrow Never Knows in the mastering fazes, while double tracking the new technology on the latter. :)

      Not sure what you mean, but the vocal playback here (including Paul's) is slightly below the native 56 cycles, as logged by EMI staff. In as much as it matters, I know and have been listening to their voices for 50 years. Sounds like Paul back there to me.

    Man, this is pretty cool! I'm guessing there is a natural "phasing" taking place, with all the different versions on here, which coupled with how the whole track is slowed down a bit, and with all the cool backward guitar snippets, make this track a bit more haunting-sounding. Very nice, thanks for posting this!

    Just by coincidence; I too discovered just how many Beatle tracks were sped up by accident.I discovered a way of doing this by using the sound equalizer on my media player.There is some facility marked Key and one can click +1 or minus 1 or whatever you like.When i'M 64 WAS THE MOST OBVIOUS ONE BUT THERE WERE NUMEROUS OTHERS mostly on Revolver and Pepper.

    Interesting project, but let me throw a fly into the ointment. In concert pitch, the song is in G# (the first chord is Ebminor). On a concert pitch-tuned guitar or piano, the chord progression is |Ebm / / / |Abm / / / |G# / C# / |G# / C7 /|. To play along on guitar (and bass), you need to tune down all strings one half step to get the lowest note (Eb) you hear on the bass, and the open strings you hear on the guitar(s). The progression then becomes Em|Am|G C|G B7|,...much easier to play.

    @TheIzabel11. The fellow holding the gun at Ringo, I believe, is Mal Evans, one of the inner circle of friends to The Beatles, who was with them from the beginning when The Beatles were not even known. He was also their roadie who had bite parts in the all of The Beatles movies. He unfortunately died in 1976 in Los Angeles when, high on drugs, was gunned down by the police. He was a threat to not only them, but to innocent bystanders. Sad. He seemed to be a gentle giant, but for the drugs.

    Why is it swamped with massive amounts of annoying reverb/echo & shit.. Lennon's vocal (& George & Paul's backing) sounds much better dry - as on the original version of Revolver ? Interesting document & I'm not disrespecting anyone here..just curious as the 'effects' sound as though they've been patched in after the final mix..like years after.. I may be wrong about this, please give any details if anyone has any ? Appreciated ! Beatles Forever ! Peace WFR xx

  • @LBrilliante
    @LBrilliante 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    the solo sounds just right.... it gives it a more sound more like a horn.. and really helps it to make sense. a totally dry mix makes no sense. I started out with the yesterday and today version and it was always one of my favorite songs.. the dry UK mix with such buried guitars and totally dry sounds awkward and the backwards guitar sounds random. Love this version.. too bad the Beatles themselves didn't undertake a thorough remix. Day Tripper would sound great in 5.1(7.2? 9.3?)

    @init4fun - Well, after all the "flaming" back and forth, and the differences of opinions have been said and done; I had forgotten to seriously "thank you" for the video, plus the time and effort that you put into it. @gregriv69 WTF are you talking about? Two scientific studies? LOL!They didn't have "capable/reliable technology back then to do a "real" voice comparisons. In later recordings like "Lady Madonna" Paul had said he was using his "Elvis" voice. He was quite capable of singing differently than his typical "Paul" voice. FYI-One's voice does change over time, so go ahead and compare "Cavern Club" era songs to his prior so-called death songs of '64 and Help. All 4 of them got a good laugh of the rumor!

    Check out Mark Lewishon's book to see how this song was originally recorded. The Fabs were going wor a very dreamy effect. The instrumental track was recorded with the tap running faster than normal, so that on playback at normal speed the pitch is dropped. They then over dubbed vocals with the ape machine running than normal speed. A mon-mix down and stereo mix down were then done with the machines running at normal speed.

    I really do like this video and the song's original speed. Yes it may not be as clear as the CD version, but the natural sound of The Beatles and the distant sounding music just adds to the effect of drifting off into a middle of a dream, then floating up stream while only sleeping.

    And this speed can't be right either. it's close...just a tad sharp of D. I would have to assume that they would have tuned to,.. if not concert pitch at least a true whole tone. A whole lot of their tracks seem to be in these just slightly off pitch keys. I will also assume that the only thing that mattered during mixing and mastering was how it sounded....as it should be....there are no rules in music and these guys proved it.

      +carlos delaorden Dumbass. There's an ignorant one in every crowd. This mix is culled from synchronizing several of EMI's orginial US & UK mono & "stereo" 1966 vinyl pressings (to get all the background guitar tape snippets, as they're different in US, UK mono & stereo mixes), and Capitol Records is famous for their insistence in adding reverb to "enhance" their "stereophonic sound." If you come across a US vinyl pressing from that era (until the mid-60's), you'll find mixes saturated with an inordinate amount of reverb, which the band and George Martin hated. Here's a sample: th-cam.com/video/WqBkZfdOl-w/w-d-xo.html
      So, screw you. Like it or not, that's just the way it was.

      Anybody can edit Wikipedia and it's loaded with feds pushing the (patsy) Chapman "lone nut" cover-up of the assassination of Lennon. So, while some info on it can be correct, it's not a credible source. The backing tracks on Revolver were often slowed down (i.e. 'Rain') when vocals were added. The vocals on the released version had the vocal track speed up significantly and the backing track slowed down. Here, the recording is pitched down to hear not only their natural singing voices but several mixes (mono & stereo) with all of the backwards guitar edits added.

    Actually, only the vocals were "sped up" - the instruments were recorded at a faster tape speed so when slowed down it gives that "underwater" drowsy feel. Slowing the track down corrects the vocals but really stretches out the instrumental track.
