Beatles Cartoon - I'm Only Sleeping

- From 1967. After reading tales of the Knights of the Round Table, John falls asleep and has a dream - set literally against the pages of the book - of young King Arthur (drawn to resemble a figure from the "Yellow Submarine" movie) and Merlin the Magician, and a giant fire-breathing dragon that is terrorizing the countryside. The only solution: put the monster to sleep with song!

It really gets to me that King Arthur is the only person to look anatomically proportioned in this whole cartoon.
Actually according to wikipedia, John and George had this to say:
n 1972, Lennon commented, "I still get a blast out of watching the Beatles cartoons on TV." In 1999, Harrison said, "I always kind of liked [the cartoons]. They were so bad or silly that they were good, if you know what I mean. And I think the passage of time might make them more fun now."
I nearly fell asleep during the yawny-sounding guitar solo.

It is great to notice how much better the animation got (in regards to the "lads" singing) from the earlier eps. Also, I notice how much this animation is similar to that of "Yellow Submarine". Definite progression from the first ep (Hard Day's Night).

So this is the original I'm Only Sleeping music video. I also love the new one, but this version is hilarious!! I would love to see this cartoon digitally remastered like another favorite 60s cartoon of mine, Speed Racer.
It's fine to think of this as "the original 'I'm Only Sleeping' music video", although it's not *_literally_* that; it's an 'outside production' the Beatles were not involved with, besides 'donating' the music. (It was made by those who would go on to create the _Yellow Submarine_ movie, though with just a tiny budget here.)

It's really weird, but I love it at the same time. Now that we have better animation skills and technology, we should make a new brand of Beatles cartoons. I would be so happy if someone did that.

Ah, but Yellow Submarine was in PRODUCTION throughout 1967! I could point out more parallels between it, and 1967's "Strawberry Fields" episode (which segment I did not post myself because somebody else already did) -- depicting the sad children in shades of gray, like the Pepperlanders; and John's closing line "It's all in the mind, y'know!", which George spoke in the movie!

If you listen to the first couple of minutes of this episode with your eyes closed, you'll think it's a Dudley Do-Right cartoon (Paul Frees used the exact same voice for John that he did for Inspector Fenwick).
i never new the beatles were ever animated except for the yellow submarine.
i heard that john wrote this song because paul would come to his house to write music , john was always asleep and wouldn't get out of bed. So this was john's way of saying "leave me alone paul!"
Hahahaha, Merlin's not even trying to fight the dragon. Thank god The Beatles were there. (This is the reason they didn't tour much in the late 60's you know)

The first couple of minutes of this sounds very similar to the Beatles' 1966 Christmas Fan Club recording...That is, except for the fact that John has the same voice as Inspector Fenwick on "The Dudley Do-Right Show."

The voice actor for John and George was American; the actor for Paul and Ringo (and King Arthur) was British.

It should be the version from the MONO "Yesterday and Today" album. The mono and stereo verisons of that album, as well as the mono and stereo UK "Revolver" albums, all had slightly different versions.

They hated what they saw based on early episodes, not later ones like this one.
Paul Frees does George. Not sure about Merlin, but Lance P. definitely does King Arthur - sounds about the same as Paul! All female voices, I'm told, (like the peasant woman) were done by British Jackie Newman.

Ah yes, in fact, "Yellow Submarine" was made by the team that had already created numerous Beatles cartoon episodes! You can see about a dozen others that I've posted by searching TH-cam for "Beatles Cartoon alanr4447a".
