Oh my god this is seriously what I was looking for, for months! I almost quit the game because all other tutorials were telling me to use rental Prospector to mine quant except I wasted hours looking for something i literarly cannot mine. With this video I can finally enjoy the game.

Excellent tutorial, your whole mining series is terrifically well done and convinced me to give mining a try. I wanted to mention that in 3.16.1 I don't believe MW controls scan angle by default. I have to press comma or period to increase or decrease scan FOV, the mouse wheel in scan mode seems to adjust the focal area of the scan itself. Keep up the great work, these videos are gold mines!
exclent tutorial Red, well paced clear and right on point thank you for efforts to help us all. earned a like and sub right off the bat :D oh and thanks to guys in game who directed me here, very cool everyone.
Well dammit, I had no idea you needed a cargo ship to haul off the refined ore, LOL. I just figured once you waited the amount of time for it to be done, it would just be sold automatically. This certainly throws a wrench in the plans of someone who only has the Mustang LOL. But tremendous guide all the same my friend, very informative and, my hope is, it'll be very helpful to me as I'm definitely trying to make that money.
Thank you so much for putting the series of comprehensive and informative guides together. The amount of data you've put into these guides is amazing. I've had to watch your videos over multiple times just to get a good handle on it all. With your guide I was able to successfully mine my first quantanium last night and it's refining now. I'll be excited to sell it when it's done. One question, you mention the group of miners but I can't figure out how to join them? I'd love to group up with some other like minded people and mine together.
I just started and I love all the info. Unfortunately mining in the Aaron belt so far for me has felt like a waste of several hours. I've found very little of the higher value ore, and with the ore I have found I'll need to rent another ship to transport the refined ore to sell. Not much money will be made in the end.
In our org we help people who want to get into mining by getting them to hire a Prospector and joining you mining. They look for their Quantainium and when they find some we help break the rocks for them. Doesnt take long before they can buy a Prospector ingame.
@@greenthumb710 My org is The Red Legion and you are welcome to join our discord. We host a group mining event every Sunday morning and there are usually multiple people mining during normal daytime hours in the US
Overcharges seem to be a lot less forgiving in 3.16. I remember several instances where I let the rock break with some red, thinking the worst that would happen was some moderate damage that could easily be repaired at the station…and then the exploding rock destroyed the Prospector’s engines, stranding me on the surface of a moon with no choice but to hit self destruct.
Is there a time limit for leaving the REFINED mats, while you go get a hauler? Or can i leave the refined materials in the refiner for 2 months, or till I come back, "some day" ?
Good question. There's no limit to how long the orders can hang out, however they will likely be lost during a patch, so don't expect to leave them there indefinitely
Question: OK you talked about finding a rock location that might be worth to someone else. How do you find you exact location to give or use later to come back and mind it your self? Also IS there a way to change the font color on the screen, when mining on a snow planet it is hard to see your data.
Generally you'd need to stay at that location until the other person arrives. If you change servers then the rocks won't be in the same place anymore. You might also be able to triangulate the location using nearby points of interest, but navigating there is a difficult task for most. Unfortunately we don't have the option to drop private location markers at this time, but hopefully that gets added soon. Regarding font colors, that's determined based on the ship you're using and there isn't really an option to swap that.
I have been on two refinery stations and cant sell ore, cant select the prospector at all. It appears in the refinery console. Did anyone encounter it? Fix it?
First step is to make sure you take off any armor with storage in it, then try to sell. Next would be to check the issue council to see if there's a matching report and see if there are any workarounds.
@@RedMonsterSC Thank you, that worked. I found a mention on Reddit that backpack was causing it. But I was wearing only a chest piece and didn't make a connection. Cheers.

would a cutlass black work as a cargo transport for refined materials?
Hi @Mario M, you won't have the ability to change anything on a rented prospector, so the loadout won't be relevant here. However, I do cover the recommended loadout in the Prospector video in the Mining Tutorial Series at about 1:40 in. th-cam.com/video/cWs9AsOD4JM/w-d-xo.html
That's a great suggestion. We do this pretty regularly as part of our Sunday Morning Mining Session but there isn't much of a tutorial out there for it.
@@RedMonsterSC Nice! I've been trying to figure out what ships would be viable for it, but I'm not sure what things like scanner differences, cockpit visibility, fuel range, and such need to be considered
@@ajneuschwander8928 to be honest, all ships have the scan function using the V hotkey and only a few minor differences in scan range. Combat ships would be good because you can also provide security, but an Aurora will also do just fine.
how does that work? how do they find the thing after say where it is? do they just have to go near where you were and start looking and get lucky? you cant set up a custom point to jump to can you?
Most of the time you'll need to stay within sight of the rock if you want to let someone come mine it. If you took a package delivery mission you could use the packages as a marker and then share the mission with whoever joined.
Great vid.. Thank you.. Also has anything changed with this new update for this ship? I have seen a lot of other ships has changed. And now the hand mining booms are here have you tested them yet? The last min in your video.. ;)
Hey, sorry about missing this comment. The mining gadgets are definitely helpful when dealing with difficult rocks, although I would still wait to mine Quantainium until you can properly outfit the Prospector. You'd need to deploy and collect the gadget several times per deposit which will greatly reduce the income per hour you can expect.
Just FYI and I am not 100% sure how up to date this is but accordining to WIKI's you can save 10k of the Prospectors rental price by getting it from Area 18 OR Lorville.
It's a factor of mass, laser power, and material collection. The ROC, which is intended for Hadanite deposits, has a laser power of 9. The laser power for the Prospector ranges between 1400 to 3000. While technically it's possible to fracture a Hadanite node with the Prospector mining laser, it's two to three orders of magnitude more powerful than intended for Hadanite. Talk about bringing a tonk to a knife fight! Next, ore deposits range from 3000-8000 mass, while Hadanite and other gemstone deposits range from 0.1 to 0.9 mass. There just won't be enough mass on gemstones to make it worth it. Lastly, those gemstones cannot be collected by the Prospector extraction laser. You'll be wandering around picking up each gemstone by hand. If you're really set on Hadanite, rent a ROC for 4k a day or buy it for 172k. Just be warned that, in general, you'll make more in one Prospector load than you will in a full day of ROC mining
@@RedMonsterSC Great explanation! thank you so much. I really want the prospector, a ship where i can go anywhere, not just the ROC for ground mining. Ill see if I buy it with real money or try to work myself up infâme to buy it ingame. but i imagine after a wipe it all goes away (except if i buy the prospector with real money of course)
ok, those cheet sheets are good info. But how accurate are they? Particuarly the sheets detailing ores to locations. Are those from devs, or what players have sorta figured out based on trial and error? Thank you.
Hey there, I pulled the info from a few sources. Some of those are based on direct review of the game data which should be fairly accurate, but that doesn't take bugs and spawning anomalies into account. For example, right now any cluster of rocks on Lyria is Quantanium which makes it easier to find. However, those are always subject to change.
A few patches ago they introduced 30k protection which collected a snapshot about every five minutes that you could restore from if you got disconnected. In most cases the refined material should be there when you reconnect but it might take a few minutes, and isn't guaranteed to work.
You used to be able to swap out the mining laser by claming the ship, logging off while the claim timer expired, then when you came back it would allow you to change it. Did they fix that? Any other workarounds to get a different mining laser on?
I think that workaround might still be possible but it's not something I've proven out, and also may be patched in the future. Its a risk for those willing to take it, but also not something that I'd be able to answer many questions about.
ok i own the Game since about 7 years now and just decided to start taking it more serious, means i want to play it with a couple of Friends. I am actually up to upgrade on of my Ships, think the Cutter to a prospector. I also own a Cutlass Black, a pisces and an Invictus Aurora Gold Livery that i do not want to trade in, expecialls cause it has only 10 years insurance... and yes for me that matters, i am dumb enough to play this game and not looking after the insurance before i crash into any mountain or asteroid cause my dogs wants cuddles 😂... would you say i should upgrade my cutter to a prospector? Would the storage of the cutlass be enough to transport refinded ores or should i better rent the prospector and upgrade to a Freelancer max?
The cutter is a great little ship to run around with, but it won't be moving cargo at all. The Cutlass Black can haul one, and possibly two mining loads if they are only partially full. As far as the prospector, it's a good ship to have pledged since mining is usually a relaxing way to earn credits after each wipe, although salvage has become more profitable with the cargo the salvage ships sometimes spawn with.
@@RedMonsterSC Thanks for the fast reply, i was expecting that the cutlass would only be viable as maybe freighter protection so that they can escape in hazard situations but what would you do? Upgrade the Drake Cutter to the Prospector or better the Freelancer max to transport more and faster and rent the prospector? I think the rental would be no problem after each whipe. The last times they wiped i restarted with rounabout 200K, that enough for the start. ...and yes, i am searching for a smooth way that i can do on my own to make some money during the game... ..but actually i am pretty unsure to pledge the prospector of the freelancer max...
Great video! I’m having issues with selling my raw materials while using the rented prospector. Anyone have any tips or tricks? Seems to be bugged. It seems to not recognize my ship at Arc L1. Should I try to go to a different areas to sell?
Make sure you have removed any armor with storage prior to trying to sell. That's been on the known issues list recently. Otherwise you can try heading to one of the other refineries.
could i expect to make more money currently doing this, or renting and using an ROC? I am currently getting 100-160k per hour with ROC, and thats on a bad run, where i cant find any good clusters.
i was flying around the halo for about 2 hours just getting no luck with finding any ore, i manged to get a quater of the space with bexalite, and another borase, and the rest mostly inert. what sort of % do you go for with the astroids, or am i just being super unlucky with my finds
20 percent is probably the minimum you want to stop for. Anything less and you'll have to rely on really good breaks to get enough material to be worth it. As I mention in the video, Aberdeen is probably one of the better locations for your desired materials. I was able to fill up in 45 minutes to an hour each time I went that direction
Rented ships can be claimed through the insurance system just like any other ship. There shouldn't be any unusual fees for this unless you are trying to expedite your insurance claim, which will always cost a bit more.
Really good and informative video! But for me as a beginner, there is a question that remained after the video. Is this more profitable than for example renting a cutty black + ROC and mining hadanite till i can buy a prospector? Since i have never done this before, i have no clue if this is like similarly profitable, less profitable or maybe even a lot more. And because of that im not exactly sure if i should invest my money in renting a prospector or not.
Both options cost about the same for rentals, but a ROC won't require you to refine, transport and sell. With the changes to gemstone spawns in 3.17 you can actually make around 150k per hour mining Hadanite, so I'd say they're about even.
Hello, This is such a nice tutorial, but i would like to know how much profit u can make in 1 day Take in account that we already spend 50k in renting the prospector. Currently Im mining with a cutlas and a roc that I own and im making about 200k in 1 day. Do you think i Should keep this methot till i'b be able to purchase a prospector and go mining tier1 ores or should I try to mining with a rented one and go for tier 2?
You can earn between 70-100k per run, and that might take you an hour. If you've got a full day of mining available you could earn quite a bit. Maybe two or three days to earn your Prospector in game.
be warned that if you're in a rental prospector and you accidentally blow it up and reclaim it you'll lose your mining laser and wont be able to mine with it anymore and can't put a new one on because you can't modify modules on a rental. Had this happen to me and I was unable to change between fracture and extraction modes or use the laser or anything and had no idea why until I actually looked at the front of it in the hangar and I can see I'm missing the mining head.
You'll need to pledge for a starter package if you want to play long term, but there is going to be a Free Fly event in May during Invictus Launch Week which will give you several days to try the game out, and they even let you fly around some of the more expensive pledge ships for free during that time. Sign up for an account here: robertsspaceindustries.com/enlist?referral=STAR-MBPT-QL2K and keep an eye out for their notifications on the Free Flight.
Problem is if you crash it and then claim you'll need to pay a huge repair bill. Was being charged 48K. I said forget it. So basically I lost today 42k, which is NOT good for a player that doesn't like to FPS and box missions are such a slow drag. I thought mining was going to b my ticket.
That's unfortunate. Insurance claims for a rented prospector work like any other vehicle in game right now. You can claim a replacement for free, then wait out the timer or opt to expedite the claim for a fee. There shouldn't be any replacement costs with modules since you can't change a rented ships loadout. My advice for anyone new to the game is to approach it with Patience and Optimism. It's an alpha, so things are always changing, plus it has a very steep learning curve that's not always very forgiving. I'm sorry your initial experience hasn't been great, but can assure you the credits will flow freely once you climb a little further up that learning curve. My discord server is a great place to ask for advice or help from experienced players, so feel welcome to join!
Nice video however I've yet to find a video that's for the average player that doesn't have a huge arsenal of ships at their disposal to sell ALL commodities at once in a massive C2 🤷♂️
Unfortunately no. The Prospector cargo capacity is designated for raw ore, whether it's a rented or owned prospector. You'll need a separate transport ship.

This will earn you between 70-100k per run, so it's quite possible your ROC expedition will earn you as much or probably more.
Can you move product with the cutlass or is the storage to small.?
The Cutlass Black holds 46 SCU which is enough for a full prospector load, and maybe two partial prospector loads of you didn't come back full.
i was flying around the halo for about 2 hours just getting no luck with finding any ore, i manged to get a quater of the space with bexalite, and another borase, and the rest mostly inert. what sort of % do you go for with the astroids, or am i just being super unlucky with my finds
Just downloaded the game wish me luck o7
Good Hunting!
What happens if a rented ship explodes or dies? I'm assuming you lost it but do you have to pay any additional fee or insurance cost?
Rented ships can be claimed through the insurance system just like any other ship. There shouldn't be any unusual fees for this unless you are trying to expedite your insurance claim, which will always cost a bit more.
what happens if u blow up a rented ship?
You'll need to claim it like any other ship. Wait out the claim timer or expedite it for a fee, then get back to mining.
Hello,
This is such a nice tutorial, but i would like to know how much profit u can make in 1 day Take in account that we already spend 50k in renting the prospector.
Excellent video, and great information for starters lookin for some nice credits.... Liked and Sub'd, will be keepin an eye out for the Legion ;)
how do i start playing this game for free plz help ?
You'll need to pledge for a starter package if you want to play long term, but there is going to be a Free Fly event in May during Invictus Launch Week which will give you several days to try the game out, and they even let you fly around some of the more expensive pledge ships for free during that time.

👌
you should be warned if you refine materials and dont refine all of them at once it just deletes everything not selected to refine...
@@RedMonsterSC Thanks for the tips. I will try again. Will join discord
Great video but wtf is wrong with your website, it crashes any device I open it on
Nice video however I've yet to find a video that's for the average player that doesn't have a huge arsenal of ships at their disposal to sell ALL commodities at once in a massive C2 🤷♂️
Thank you for this video, very helpful.
Yoy can´t use a rented Prospector to transport and sell the refined materials, but a non-rented one can? or do I need a transport ship anyway?
Unfortunately no. The Prospector cargo capacity is designated for raw ore, whether it's a rented or owned prospector. You'll need a separate transport ship.
