  • CANADIAN REVIEW OF THE 2023 Honda CR-V HYBRID (SPORT TOURING)
    Demonstrated with detail: the all-new, sixth-generation Honda CR-V is new for 2023 and has been stretched, enlarged, stiffened, retuned and re-optimized-and opting for the available hybrid engine puts the automaker’s latest electrified tech at your disposal.
    My tester’s pricey sticker and long-term fuel savings may leave some shoppers seeking out a more modestly-priced unit without hybrid power, although this is the first time I’ve counted the Honda CR-V's dynamics, powertrain and overall responsive and polished drive amongst its key assets.
    My tester is AWD-equipped, and running a set of Bridgestone winter tires, which we cover extensively with driving impressions and testing as well.
    See how the 2023 Honda HR-V handles and drives in action, and learn everything about it.

    After 7 straight leased high-end Accords, I had to switch to the CRV this year because the new Accord is now more than 1" too long for my garage. Haven't regretted it for a moment. On the US side, the Sport Touring CRV is about 40.4k with the extra cost night pearl blue paint. Two of the bigger plusses to the Sport Touring over the Sport Hybrid are the noticeable extra sound-deadening not present in any other CRV trim, making it sound more refined...AND the Bose 12 speaker sound system, also in the Accord Sport Touring. Best sound system ever in a Honda. Seat height for arthritic knees is a major plus for this old dude. Yes, this CRV Sport Touring is slower than my previous 2020 Accord Touring, but that powertrain is no longer offered in any case. It's NOT slow...just slowER, but the off-the-line torque is excellent, and there is surprisingly almost no body roll. Fun to watch you riding around on snow-covered roads in your VERY nicely done review, Justin. I've had my CRV since April 21, so I haven't had any snow experience yet. But I'll get some next winter, since I live in a Buffalo suburb. I DO miss the HUD and the ventilated seats I had in my Touring Accord. I don't doubt the new Touring Accord is just as quiet and refined, but this is the most refined Honda I've had in my long line of Hondas. I was only surprised not to hear any comments from you on how you thought the CRV AWD functions. Still, nice job!

    I own exactly the same trim 2023 CR-V as on this video, got mine among the first one's back in December 2022, and I got to say, that current Honda built quality has disappointed me. Paint coating of the inside portions of the doors is so poor, that I got corrosion in 4 months old car! This is unacceptable! Went to my local dealership to claim the warranty repairs. While they were fixing it, I've been curious and went on their lot to check a few brand new CR-V's for the same area, and unfortunately, same poor coating and uneven gaps on the hood/fenders area, the lift gate and side panels as well!
    And lastly, what the service department manager told me about those findings, shocked me! His words exactly " It's okay for the mass production vehicles"
    Previously, I had spent hours on the phone with the American Honda call center about this issue trying to get someone in the quality control management, but unfortunately they've said that there is no such one, so that's probably why Honda manufacturing going down in the quality I guess? So sad experience. Beware, and check on those things at the time of purchase!

    For Honda 2024 CRV Hybrid Canadian versions what does “Damping” do in Touring Hybrid? Is it only for tire noise? The EXL Hybrid has no damping but it has smaller 18” tire does this means EXL Hybrid has lower tire noise anyways?

  • @rohitnijhawan5281

    Not many people drive 25000 km per year.
    Most people do 15-20k kms per year
    Gas is also cheaper in the US although it's safe to say it'll average higher than $1.5 per liter in canada all the way up to 2033.
    For the price you're better off with the EX-L and you can get a discount on those whereas for the hybrids you're just a shakedown pinata to most dealers

    Do you use snow mode much during winter - does it make a difference to the driving? Thanks for nice honest reviews!

    • @JustinPritchard
      @JustinPritchard  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Almost never--- Read your owners manual though. In many cases, snow mode is designed for very deep, challenging snow and slush where you might get stuck. In the driving you saw in this video, the normal or 'auto' default mode is more than enough. This all-wheel drive system is very smart. I'd be using snow mode in extremely severe conditions or as a last resort if I was very worried about being stuck.

    • @JustinPritchard
      @JustinPritchard  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks!
      Lower towing capacity would be partly because of the weight I'd imagine. In other applications, adding heavier options to a vehicle can take the amount right out of towing capacity.
      The hybrid is heavier, probably part of the story at least!
      If I'm not mistaken the last generation CRV hybrid didn't even offer towing at all so this is still technically an improvement.

      Watch the video a few times, especially the slow motion launches. I put them in there to illustrate how good this hybrid system is in the snow. You get lots of power to the rear axle right off the line. Highly responsive. I didn't note any issues and I've been testing cars in the winter for almost two decades.
      Mind you my tester is on dedicated winter tires not all seasons.
      I would take it over the RAV4 hybrid, much snappier response which is important in the snow. Hope that helps.

    Im looking to sell my 2016 Volvo XC60 and get the 2023 CRV Hybrid. Im curious about the AWD system. Does the snow setting put the CRV in dedicated AWD mode? Im in New Brunswick and we get tons of snow
    Loved your review. Subbed and liked

    • @JustinPritchard
      @JustinPritchard  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks! Glad you liked.
      The all-wheel drive is always active no matter what.
      From a stop, all four wheels are always powered, every time. When the surface isn't slippery, the rear wheels stop receiving power as you start moving, to save fuel, since it isn't needed.
      If it becomes needed, they can be re-engaged in fractions of a second.
      Turning on snow mode basically alters the parameters in terms of how much power the rear wheels get at launch, and how long the system waits before turning them off.
      In snow mode a slippery launch is expected, so the rear wheels get much more power off the line than in normal mode. They stay engaged more of the time as you get moving as well.
      Though the vehicle behaves just fine in the snow using normal mode, the snow setting makes for a more direct and confident launch in deeper and icier surfaces.
      Hope that helps!
      If you're going to the new CRV from an XC60, I'm quite curious to hear how you find the difference between how the pair drives especially in the winter. Keep us updated please

    • @JustinPritchard
      @JustinPritchard  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Josh
      I can't really tell you about the real world mpg, keep in mind that most car reviewers are driving vehicles with just a few hundred or maybe 2000 or 3,000 km on them. Break in not likely complete, so mileage will typically be worse during a early test drive like this. I hear from a lot of owners of new vehicles saying they start getting better gas mileage somewhere after their first oil change sort of thing.

  • @rafars2246
    @rafars2246 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    There's no transmission lol Just electric motors.... The generator motor can also move the wheels, so it does the engine at higher speeds. Too many combinations. The shifting is simulated only by the interior speakers, not the imaginary transmission you mentioned. Man all you needed to is to read their press release...

    • @JustinPritchard
      @JustinPritchard  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The specific arrangement of the electric motors functions as a continuously variable transmission (CVT), most drivers new to plug in hybrids will be familiar with this term which is why I used it.
      Source: in person conversation with two of the vehicles lead engineers.
      Well technically it is not a transmission, this video was intended for a shopper who may have a lesser understanding of the subject matter than you.
      Can you explain some more about how the speakers simulate the shifting?

    • @rafars2246
      @rafars2246 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@JustinPritchard The speed varies of course, like with any other electric motors, but it is not a transmission. They encapsulate both motors in a metal case that looks like a transmission, but that's the only resemblance. Requires zero maintenance, it will last forever. No belts, no alternator, no starter motor, way more reliable and easy to deal with.
      Helps to put something in the head of the oblivious? Sure, but people should know their car is driven like a tesla for the most part. People would love to know that, especially with the whole cvt stigma.
      Maybe they could if they try, but as they make electric motors today, you can't have shifting at all. That's why they use the car speakers to produce the fake engine noise. Although this trick is being used by so many cars, even those with only gas engines.

    More power, more room, better gas mileage for about an extra five thousand loonies, Mazda CX 90. More the configuration of the CRV, wait for the CX 70. Honda has priced the CRV too close to these vehicles.
