The Microwave was so important to the Pistons and he should be given more credit than he does. As a Celtics Fan I always knew Vinnie would come in and change the game. Great mid range shooter.
And Joe Dumars is modest but he was one of the best guards ever. Great ball handling, great shooting, great defense, great heart and a calm head. On top of it he was modest and humble. His handling was devoid of blings, simple/minimalist and complete control. Pleasure to watch.

Heck of a player. As that Pistons team emerged and broke through I really felt like Dumars had the whole package and at least against the Celtics I felt he was more of a problem than Isiah. I mean his defense, his shooting, his finishing his drives, his selflessness. Just a player an excellent, excellent player. Probably the most likable guy on that team honestly (for a Celtics fan).

I know I am maybe a little too old school, but I think playing college basketball for four years, under a great coach, at a top level program, allowed NBA players of the past to become savants of the game. It shaped the minds of the players in a way that we don't see enough of today. The NBA is simply looking for one and done, or none and done future talent and let's be honest, 19 year olds have juvenile brains that are grossly under developed. College basketball should be competitive and players should be getting a degree not just in an academic realm, but also a degree in basketball. 4 years of nuanced passing, moving without the ball, defensive foot work, screening, all the things an NBA rookie should already know how to do. But, that's often not what happens.
Dumars went to McNeese State (a small school), Isiah Thomas came out after his sophomore year (won the NCAA tournament beating UNC with James Worthy and Sam Perkins), Magic also came out after his sophomore year (also won the NCAA tournament). Bird played 3 years at Indiana State (small school, started at Indiana but transferred)
Nice video. As a pistons fan, got to watch Dumars when i started watching basketball when the Bad Boys started to dissiminate after they win back to back titles when most of them were still there like Isaiah, lambier, Spider Sally and Rodman. This conversation was about the Celtics and Pistons, a rivalry that was one of the most epic in NBA history. Just HOW did Dan Patrick manage to sneak Jordan in the conversation?
Because MJ is by far the best all around player ever, the greatest of all time, the most accomplished basketball player of all time, he did so many things in just 13 seasons and played all 82 regular season games 10 times 😱😱😱😱😱😱🤯🤯🤯🤯

Hahahaha! Jordan played FIVE seasons without Pippen. He NEVER ONCE had a .500 season those five years. He played 10 playoff games without Pippen and lost NINE. He has a losing season EVERY year. Heck, even if you add in the great Dynasty years in the expansion 90s, Jordan's CAREER record without Pippen is sub .500. The difference between Jordan and Kevin Durant is that Durant has twice the skill of Jordan. This is HILARIOUS hearing people like you talk about this dude.

Mr Dumars, you were awesome as well....but yeah, Bird and the Celtics in his prime were GREAT!!!! Larry Bird is my all time favorite player....not saying he was the best of all time but he was my GOAT.....loved him and the Celtics
I saw Joe in the Detroit airport toward the ending of his career. I walked up and shook his hand and introduced him to my daughter who was about 5. He was a complete gentleman. I also loved Joe. Also was very surprised when I walked to him and we looked eye to eye. I'm 6'5. On the court he looked so little lol. Always loved how much of a gentleman he was and is.
Bird was in the same mold of player like Lebron and Jokic and Doncic - their basketball IQ was off the charts and so were their skill-level, athleticism and the will to win. Casual fans pay too much attention to athleticism and skills and don't value enough the will to win and IQ. It's rare for players to have ALL of that as a package, maybe 1-2 players per generation and they all end up in HOF
in my all time fantasy draft i’m picking Bird #1. besides ability to score anytime, rebound, pass, play team defense with anyone, he was far and away the best at making his team better. Celtics before Bird showed up won 29 games. Bird shows up and the team then wins 61 games. MJ individually is amazing, but Bulls when MJ went to play baseball were one bad call from ECF in ‘94 and probably beat Pacers and go to Finals without him. Celtics without Bird were nothing.
He could dominate a game without the ball. He could dominate a game with rebounding, assists, steals and shooting. He didn't need to have the ball in his hands 48 minutes to effect the game, as Jordan, LeBron, Magic, Drexler did. I think it was Worthy who said "when Bird didn't have the ball in his hands was when he was most dangerous. He'd make you look stupid."
Give me Larry Bird and Bill Russell and then you can pick your five guys before I pick my next three and I'll win at least 8 out of every 10 seven game series. I always tell people that.
As a dyed-in-the-wool Celtics fan, I always thought that there were a few guys on rival teams that would have been great Celts. Dumars, Doc Rivers and Maurice Cheeks are at the top of that list. Quality guys, smart players, no nonsense. Doc proved me right when he coached the Celts and hung that banner.
Dumars to this day has never got enough credit for how great a player he was And he played the game the right way was one of the bad boys who was not dirty Utmost respect for him
I saw Gus and Ray Williams both play in high school for Mount Vernon. My high school upset them in the regular season but lost to them in the playoffs in 1971.
Joe has put on some weight, damn!😳 But indeed classy guy, never a Bad Boy really, will always remember that in the air behind the back bouncer to Dennis.😎
Gus Williams was cool he actually gave me a pair of sneakers at Cole Field house at Fort Meade Maryland when he played for the Washington Bullets, they use to practice there and I use to lift weights there and help those guys work out when they came in the weight room, use to see Wes Unseld almost daily too , those guys use to watch me lift weights then I would help them , Manute Bol too, wish I still had those sneakers though 😜 ✌️

Agree 100%. Although today's players are extremely athletic and have skills (and are helped by rule changes), the game itself has become street ball.
Dumars was such a great player. As dirty as those pistons were, he was always classy. One of my all time favorites.
Kudos to Joe. I loved watching Gus play in Key Arena.
Nice video. As a pistons fan, got to watch Dumars when i started watching basketball when the Bad Boys started to dissiminate after they win back to back titles when most of them were still there like Isaiah, lambier, Spider Sally and Rodman. But, they didn't have the Microwave anymore. Then Mcquire soon left. Later when they were all gone except for Dumars, I got to watch Dumars in the Palace during the Grant Hill iteraction.
Joe Dumars is a class act.
Old showtime lakers fan. Hated the 80s pistons but i just couldn't hate on Dumars. Same with DJ with the celtics. Both total pros and impeccable sportsmanship
I loved Gus Williams and the sonics😎
Louisiana's Joe Dumars and Andrew Toney and Karl Malone are so underrated, but Bill Russel was from Louisiana also. So were Mikan and Shaq (both LSU).
Joe D epitomized class and professionalism when he played. The definition of professional athlete should include his picture.

Hahahahahaha! You take away all of Kareem's points, he's STILL a Hall of Famer. You take away all of Wilt's points, he's still a Hall of Famer. You take away all of LeBron's points, he's still a Hall of Famer. You take away HALF of Jordan's points and he is not even an Allstar. That should give you some perspective. He "accomplished" a lot?
Joe is a good man kinda reminds me of Dr J in his mannerisms outstanding human beings
Was a Sixes fan, Joe Dumas was feared every time he touched the ball.
The Wizard, Gus Williams, Warriors and Sonics, man was a stud guard
Joe Dumars was one of my favorite NBA players.
He played during the peak Piston years, had a couple rings with the Pistons when MJ, Larry, and Magic were getting theirs, to put it into perspective.
who wouldnt get along with joe dumars what a nice guy
Joe D was always the class act of the Pistons....great great player and human being...yeah, at the end, the bit about no grudges, that's it, he stayed out of the fights with the bulls and celitc, he just played...well, very well, and never dirty, or sneaky.
thank you Joe Dumars!
Dumars was the only class on the Piston's team
What about Sally?
@@grog3514 showtime fan. Gotta say you're right
@@grog3514 or Adrian Dantley. Or Vinnie Johnson…

Joe Dumars has always been a class act. And what a tremendous player he was.
Joe Dumas is one of my favourite players ever
Celtics fan here....
You could battle them all game. But when it came down to it. Dumars was a killer.
Mad props to you Joe.
Love Joe...a Larry Legend is the GOAT fsn
Joe Dumars was one of my favorite players when I was a kid. Seems like a really good guy too.
And this is why the NBA Sportsmanship Award is called the Joe Dumars Trophy
Gus Williams, Seattle Supersonics guard. NBA Finals champs in the late 70s.
The Wizard!
Great vid !
I always liked Joe D even when I didn't like the Bad Boys. He played college ball I'm my hometown. Joe is nothing but CLASS!
Joe D is a guy that many men say “he is my best friend”.
Bird was in the same mold of player like Lebron and Jokic and Doncic - their basketball IQ was off the charts and so were their skill-level, athleticism and the will to win. Casual fans pay too much attention to athleticism and skills and don't value enough the will to win and IQ. It's rare for players to have ALL of that as a package, maybe 1-2 players per generation and they all end up in HOF
in my all time fantasy draft i’m
picking Bird #1. besides ability to score anytime, rebound, pass, play team defense with anyone, he was far and away the best at making his team better.
@@Colstonewall 100%. might have been Worthy or Cooper i forget….but yes he had amazing stats against overall small touches of the ball.
Give me Larry Bird and Bill Russell and then you can pick your five guys before I pick my next three and I'll win at least 8
out of every 10 seven game series. I always tell people that.
@@steverenom.299 love it!
@@dougnewman3935 I always end up with Oscar Robertson and Jerry West as my guards too. Lol.
Great find! Rare story from Dumars.
Enjoyed learning Dumars is a class guy.
This Celtics fan always knew Joe was a class act. I wish you well!
Great player, especially on defense. Loved watching him shut down Jordan
Very underrated his defense was outstanding and good shooter as well
Dumars amazed me when he was in his prime...I don't think he ever missed a shot.
Joe D. Class act, all the way.
I think the stealing of the inbound pass was perhaps one of the greatest moments in basketball history.
And Bird wasn't even going for the steal He was going to foul Lame-beer buuut
Definitely. I was watching it live.
First class guy... Thank you Joe
Brilliant insight by Joe Dumars about Larry Bird..."He was two plays ahead on everything." Hence nickname "Kodak".
Dumars to this day has never got enough credit for how great a player he was
And he played the game the right way was one of the bad boys who was not dirty
Utmost respect for him
Wow! Joe was a terrific ballplayer!
0:39 Gus Williams, Dennis Johnson, John Johnson, Lonnie Shelton & Jack Sikma 1979 NBA Champions
I saw Gus and Ray Williams both play in high school for Mount Vernon. My high school upset them in the regular season but lost to them in the playoffs in 1971.
Joe is PURE CLASS, AWESOMEBASKETBALL PLAYER, WINNER !!!
Joe has put on some weight, damn!😳
But indeed classy guy, never a Bad Boy really, will always remember that in the air behind the back bouncer to Dennis.😎
Joe Dumars always kept a low-key attitude when he played. He never said much and just did his job.
The only "bad boy" that wasn't a jerk
Joey Dumars was every bit as good as all those greats.
Wow, cool guy. Gained a fan.
No, not a savant. A genius. Big difference, he KNEW why he was so good
Joe was the nice guy, played the game the right way.
Dumars was one of the best Pistons. He and Salley were my favorite Pistons. I wasn't a Pistons fan either.
Dumars is/was always class.
Would love to see a Thomas n Dumars alongside Bird n Mchale rewatch clutch minutes and give a mental breakdown.
Outstanding player
Everyone in these comments keeps writing that Joe Dumars was a good player, etc. Whoa! The guys was a 6 time All Star, 2 time NBA Champion and NBA Hall of Fame. I think that puts him in the great category.
Gus “the wiz” Williams, was a magician.
