The moment you mentioned Bethesda, I saw where we were going. This is a well known business strategy of theirs, find a struggling studio, promise to help them out, but put up a whole bunch of stupid artificial roadblocks or just outright withhold payment, see them crumble, swoop in and buy the pieces of the shattered company for a song. It's filthy and I don't doubt a big part of the blame for how this game turned out lays on them.

I admit it's been twenty years or so since I read Lovecraft, but something to remember is that he didn't write any novel length stories. The guy wasn't Stephen King with 1000 page epic tomes.
Most of his stories are like 50 pages, written for scifi magazines.
It's a lot of foreshadowing, an exposition dump, maybe a chase scene then a spooky twist ending that makes the narrator go mad. (you/they were an alien/frogman/apeman/ratman all along!!!)
At the Mountains of Madness is his longest and most 'adventurous' story but even then the climactic payoff is essentially an exposition dump.

The Great Race of Yith is a little more complicated than all that. They aren't just transmitting thoughts across space, they're actually swapping the mind of a Yith with the 'Specimen', allowing the Yith to observe firsthand the locality of their target while the transferred Specimen is interrogated and questioned for knowledge of their species, and they can also transfer across time as well as space, meaning the Yith you meet could be dead long before you meet them.

The scariest shit is that the Yith are at the literal "end times" where they lose the war against the Polyps.
All the Yith's plans that involves flinging their minds into the past is to prevent the Polyps from gaining the upper hand in an interdimensional space war.
It is not uncommon for a Yith to observe the horrible death at the end of their life, just to last-second transfer their mind into a Human while the poor Human has a few moments to collect themselves before being torn to shreds in a body beyond their mind's time.
It is one of those scary things that genuinely freaks me out when I really think about it, you could have a neighbour that suddenly goes a bit bonkers and starts acting weird, they'll call you by your full name and they'll walk strangely as they go about their daily lives - it is as if they had a personality change and suddenly, one day they grab a gun and drive off into the hills where they go to fulfill their destiny to prevent the Polyps from winning the Interdimensional Space War. You might never see them again and their family will be fucked up about their wife/husband/son/daughter/mom/dad just stood up one day and said: "This one shall traverse to the mountains with our projectile accelerator, don't call the authorities I have this under control, this one would say that we would never meet again, but the truth is, we already never didn't." they then got into their car and drove away, leaving behind the car keys - something that your neighbour reportedly didn't need to operate their vehicle.
They would've never found the body of your neighbour, but you could swear that you hear the wind cackling when you're out walking in the woods, thankfully you'll never know of the wind's masters, by the time the Polyps are free you'll be long dead... _Unless you're next..._

It is simple how to write a good Cthulhu Mythos game. YOU DON'T! Cosmic horror is impossible to translate to the screen! You can't translate existential dread and the feeling of insiginficance into a shooter.
People in the Cthulhu mythos don't go insane because "monster ugly now i am insane", but because they realize what the reality of the world is. Imagine an ant living at a graveyard getting a glimpse of our world and realizing his whole world is just a small part of something bigger, the very ground he walks on is just a source of information for titanic beings (the inscription of the gravestone) and his whole world, where his people live since countless generations, is just the remnant of an unfathomable powerful being whose brethren could annihilate you and your world without a second thought and they only don't do that because you are so insignificant compared to them thyt they don't even notice you. And then... you are a normal ant again, having glimpsed the truth but you can't describe it in ant-terms and because of that you can't really understand it either and no one in your colony believes you. THAT is why you go insane and start to pray these beings will never notice you.
YOU CAN'T TRANSLATE THAT INTO A GAME! Simply because a game in its most basic form expects you to understand the rules and gives you agency. Both things humans in the Cthulhu Mythos don't have
That is why "Cthulhu" games are just normal games with ugly monsters in it, far away from what it is supposed to be.

I think it is possible to do, just very hard. I think rather than taking inspiration from the first person horror/light shooter genre they should take more inspiration from crpgs. To me a good call of cthulu game will be closer to something like disco elysium than amnesia or resident evil.
Call of cthulu is a ttrpg, and pretty fun to play. It honestly surprises me that there isn't more crpgs(generally the genre used to adapt ttrpgs) for CoC. Ofc a crpg will be less traditional horror and more atmospheric unease, but I think atmosphere and unease are closer to Lovecraft than monsters and jump scares.

I played this game 20 years ago on Xbox and it was absolutely fantastic. My friends and I still jokingly tell each other to "Spread out! Search the area!" after our memorable experiences with this game in its prime.
I tried replaying this game on Steam a few years ago and it was an absolute mess. What he heck happened to the PC port?? I don't think I even made it to the raid on Innsmouth before I gave up on it. I'm somewhat tempted to retry with all the community fixes one day for the nostalgia.

When I started this channel I only had the Amok Runner Speedrun challenge in mind. However, school took up so much of my time that I quit too early. Then when I started back up again in August, I had set a goal for myself to hit 1k subs by May of this year. That’s what I was hoping for yet I grew exponentially more, something I never expected.
Short answer: No, I was expecting to grow SO much slower. I was only hoping that I’d be able to hit 1k subs by May of this year

    So two things
The Yith are one of the few benevolent races in the mythos so it makes sense that for the supernatural elements of the story they were chosen as the allies
The other I find super interesting is that you liked most of the game despite the bugs (which really this and Vampire the mascarade are the quintessential doesn't work without the fan patch games) except the first two hours; which is really rare since most people I've discussed the game with tend to agree those first two hours were the best and mostly hate the rest of the game as the focus on exploring and stealth gets replaced with regular FPS combat
It would also be worth noting that a lot of the shooting was added at Bethesda's request since the original plan was for a much slower pacing more in line with the original Shadow over Innsmouth story which yes it has a magical hobo that gives an exposition dump

Tbh I wish difficulty for games went more than just "enemies hit harder" or "you have less X". So easy would be for modern gamers where stuff is highlighted or explained through popup boxes, while hard would have none of that and you just have to figure it out yourself.
Granted it's not that simple, but I believe there's room for both current and past gamers through this method. Yeah sure we can look a walkthrough up and most of us would have done easy first than learning it; but it doesn't stop them from trying. Providing there aren't any bugs or softlocks which older games often had sadly; but even then, more than 1 save slot can help.

I never finish this game cause of the bug. In the last mission you need to run fast to escape the collapse of the temple, there is a boundary that the rock will fall down on you no matter what you do, I just die right there and cant progress to the ending. I try to reload, restart the whole level, try to dodge the rock, try to bait the rock, wait for the rock to fall so I can pass it safely but to no avail. I gave up eventually

If you have read the Lovecraftian Book (Shadow Over Innsmouth) The part with Zadok Allen wouldn't have seem bad to you, that part is actually quite decent. This is almost exactly what happens in the book anyways as Zadok gives you tons of information while drunk, but the Book ended differently than the game.

Honestly, if they were able to take a little more time to even just polish what they had in the game and were allowed to drop it on pc to begin with it probably would have been a cult classic, let alone if they were able implement the cut content. Even in its broken state it has the elements of a great dark fantasy

    Also
The developer of this planned a RE4-like over the shoulder shooter horror but it was canned for obvious reasons.
    Yes
The game's good with intriguing plot but they forget fun. Imagine a "riding in the back shooting at enemies" segment but you don't have enough ammo to do that instead of giving you a turret or weapon with infinite ammo like the norm, lol.
After that point which i survived i don't know where to go anymore lol.

I thought this game looked cool. A 2008-2014 era Bethesda horror game would have been awesome. I know it wasn’t developed by Bethesda but still.
Back when this game was made, “indie games” weren’t really a thing yet. There were just big and small(ish) developers and publishers. There wasn’t any of this “one dude made this amazing game” stuff or even an ability to crowdfund a product. So props to these guys for even getting this over the finish line.
