I have a 90 Comanche with 265k miles on it. The lifters make all sorts of racket sometimes on mine, particularly after a fresh oil change or if it hasn't been run for a month. Once it pumps up the lifter it purrs like a kitten. This is going to be a fun little truck ince you get it going.

      Ya typical 4.0 /jeep things 🤣🤣
i figured it was internally & then going back over the footage it definitely sounds like fuel/spark knock from running it solely on the ether. Which totally makes sense..
And i agree, it’ll be a fun little unit to have on the road once she’s squared away.

Ease up on the starting fluid. Flooding the hell out of it and washing all the oil off the cylinders. That's why it's making the pinging sounds.

You may have seen it, was for sale back in December. We jumped on it the day it was posted & got lucky that the guy prior to me flaked out on the purchase.

even if the bearings & other internals are toast, the beauty of an inline 6 is that you can do a inframe rebuild, maybe take a day tops! Very seldom can anyone destroy the block on these old tractor engines, but the OEM pistons and other parts arent so durable.

Yeah the heat really kicks their ass, that’s the downfall of the In-line 6 4.0 in the comanche/Cherokee. The unibody just traps that heat… obviously oil starvation will kill it too. But usually a well maintained motor always falls victim to a water pump or thermostats. Especially with the dummy gauges they won’t know til it’s too late.
Watching over the footage, it sounds like spark/fuel knock & nothing internal. Buy you are right, they’re very simple to work on. Although the tech in me would want to pull the engine completely, pressure wash the bay, you know.. going down the rabbit hole lol

Try soaking a rag/sponge with gasoline and put it under the air filter. You’ll get like 2 minutes of run time.
Sounds like spark knock from either, try some 87.
Unhook the fuel line at the engine, return at the tank, let the pump flush the line.
    When we going testing?

I should’ve thought of that! Rookie mistake huh haha. It would’ve been nice to hear it be able to run without the fuel/spark knock.
Either way, once i get a new fuel pump in we will try to test it again, i don’t want to keep leaning it out.
Once i have some seats in it, we can take it testing hahaha
