  • $98 Canon EF 28-135mm f3.5-5.6 IS USM AF Lens Review Best Value Professional Photography Class 250
    Best Value lens for your Canon full frame or aps-c camera (film too)
    Camera used for the photos in this video;
    Canon 5D Classic *(mark I)
    *Also shown in this video is the aps-c camera Canon XT
    Lens information;
    Canon 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6;
    The EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens from Canon is a compact and lightweight zoom lens that offers superior optical performance plus a built-in Image Stabilizer. The IS system reduces blurred photographs caused by camera shake and allows for handheld photography in comparatively dim light without a flash or tripod. At the wide-angle end of the zoom range, the equivalent shutter speed gain is approximately 1.5 stops while at the telephoto end, it is approximately 2 stops.
    In addition, the lens has an Ultrasonic Autofocus Motor (USM) for faster and quieter AF operation, and the pulse control diaphragm (EMD) ensures precise aperture control. manual focus override is supported for precise manual control even in AF mode. The minimum focus distance throughout the zoom range is 20".
    The Optical Image Stabilization (IS) system is composed of a pair of gyro sensors to detect vertical and horizontal motion and a microprocessor that compensates for this motion by shifting special lens elements in parallel with the perceived movement. The IS system reduces blur in images shot in dim light and at long focal lengths.
    The internal focusing mechanism allows the front of the lens to remain stationary and to easily accommodate specialty filters, such as polarizing filters.
    An Ultrasonic Autofocus Motor (USM) provides fast, smooth and quiet autofocus action which is particularly important when shooting video with this lens.

    I had one of these lenses for my 7D and was less than impressed. Maybe I just got a bad copy and/or wasn’t in a position to take advantage of all the lens offered.
    Might be time to revisit it though as I’m going on a bit of a Canon tear again lol. Used 20 and 30Ds are amazing value for money these days.

    Thanks Carmine, hunted one of these down on e-bay (UK), early days yet, but some test shots look really promising, a really useful range at a reasonably compact size, yes it's weighty but nothing like my Sigma 24-105, making for a relatively easy carry around on my Canon 6D.

    Thanks for the great tip. I grew up in the film era and have been a slow adopter of digital be cause of the cost. Unlike film cameras, digital gear loses most of its value within a few years. The rush to mirrorless cameras has made full frame SLR's and their lenses quite a bargain. Now I am on the hunt for a 28-135mm IS.

    Thanks, Carmine. I've been considering a similar EF-S lens, but hesitant due to the price being a bit higher. I've also been saving to get some full frame gear (maybe a 5D mk II). This helps on both fronts. Thanks for confirming it works on full frame and crop sensor too. I just ordered one and will test it on an upcoming trip.

      @@CarmineTavernaPhotography Thank you for your answer, you supported me in a difficult moment. The lens arrived, but I haven’t been able to check it yet - the package with the memory card is still on the way. The retractable part of the lens is very loose, I don’t even know what to think...
      The only consolation is that it’s not too expensive - 135 euro.

    Very important, make sure your version says Made in Japan on the front. The newer ones that say Canon Inc are made in China and optically poor performers, I have had both and they are Day and night different. The Made in China versions have Dark and soft corners and have to be stopped down to f11, the Japan version are sharp wide open an no dark corners. I have had 3, sold my 2 Made in China versions after getting the Japan lens.

    Hey Carmine, I am so confused looking at old Ef canon lenses for my 500 and 7D. Following you here got inspired... But watching "Christopher Frost" channel (tests all kind of lenses) I just do not know what to believe anymore. Frost's channel breaks down every old lens you advice...??? It is like day and knight

    Hi! Thanks for the review, can I ask you if you believe this can be a good wedding lens to be used with a Canon 6D? I am mostly a video shooter (Panasonic GH5) and photography is mainly a passion: I love vintage lenses, and I can usually take my time to focus and shoot more pics of a given subject, but this is my first autofocus canon lens, and I would like to know what to expect, thanks!
