Extroverts too can choose a simpler life. The people I know who live in small towns and villages have way more friends than those who live in cities. It's not about introversion vs extroversion, it's about more time and space, quality of life, stress-free living and high conscious relationships - especially the relationship with oneself.

I once saw graffiti that said "Stop the glorification of being busy." It made me pause and think about why we glorify running around to the beat of another person's drum. I saw that about a dozen years ago, and never forgot it.
And not sleeping! I'm still struggling with undoing that idea, that resting early is a waste of time and something losers do, better to run on fumes and live on coffee and brag about that.
OH man the quite life...something I had as a child in my home village in Africa. Then we moved to the west...10 years later barely 23 years old, knee deep in school debt, majorly depressed and stressed out at work because I'm too "passive", "too timid"- I miss my village days- ....that's why I like that song by 21 pilots, "We used to play pretend, give each other different names, we would build a rocket ship and then we'd fly it far away...but now their laughing in our face, saying..wake up, YOU NEED TO MAKE MONEY!"

Happiness does not come from outside, but from within. I agree completely with your message. If we are not able to find peace and comfort within our own turbulent minds, then how our we going to fair when we include more dynamic and complex relationships and ventures to our daily living? Situations will become more complicated and our minds will be more demanding. Exterior goals should only be sought after when we have a concrete foundation to sustain their purpose. But we acquire that meaning through inter-reflections to know oneself.

Hello School of Life! Once you grow large enough you should create a sister channel for the soul purpose of teaching the younger kids. Directly addressing the problems kids go through & what obstacles they may face will surely have a huge impact. It could also be a good channel for parents to run to if they find trouble explaining something to their kids. You could call it 'Welcome To Life.' haha
I think this is spot on. There's been many times people are criticised for "lacking ambition" when they don't aim for a promotion or a bigger job, but sometimes it's because you realise you don't need it. Why risk more stress if you are already content with what you have? And if you're not content, it's important to realise the reputation and value gained from a higher position and pay won't make a difference. I've known many people that have gone for a harder job because they think it will make them feel better about themselves, it never does, not truly.
+Joe Lay Very true. I just think there needs to be a balance though. Poverty obviously sucks and wealth has its dangers. People should just live more simply. I know that's relative, but we should all pause once in a while, slow down and enjoy the simple things God has blessed us with. We get so caught up in the excitement and magic of technology and wealth that we forget about all the wonderful things that surround us every day. But that is the danger of wealth. It blinds us and makes it difficult to draw that line that says, "enough!"
I think I already am living the "quiet life". Well, atleast technology wise. I don'thave Facebook nor a twitter account and if i had i would nly use it for work if it was demanded of me. I still use my smartphone as a normal cellphone i grew up with and the only "social media" i use is TH-cam. I couldn't have been better off. Yeah, sure i have become more isolated because of it but i have become the wiser for it too. Especially about myself.
Totally agree. My family when they get together all they talk is about work, money ,money, money.... They do my head in. I see other people do it at functions. Huge cars my old friends have. Huge houses. I think is this what it takes to make you happy. And they reluctantly buy you a coffee when you make an effort to see them once in a while. I keep myself to myself now.
I'd rather have a sunrise gently open my eyes than the harsh sound of an alarm going off in the dark. I'd rather walk in the grass complete with morning dew than rush around my home, preparing for my 8 hour day. I'd rather ask myself what I want to do from day to day than have a stranger comand me what to do with my life. I'd rather live the quiet life and be happy and at peace than live a life full of noise, and have a mind of chaos.
There is one group that is forgotten in this video, and they often choose the quiet life. That group is the mentally ill, especially schizophrenics and schizoaffectives. They have enough noise and static in their head that they have to choose a quiet life. It's not a choice. It is a necessity. They often live in poverty and many of them are extremely bright. They just kind of fall off the grid. Society does not understand them. We live in a noisy and busy world which is constantly centered around making money and being productive. I think it's time to give respect to those who choose to live the quiet life and live life on their own terms. The next time you see a homeless man, you may want to think twice about who he is exactly. He may be a brilliant genius who has mental illness and he has no choice to choose the quiet life.
Nice post. I have dissociative identity disorder Past 30 yrs had to be quiet and w little money. Grew up rich and was award winning teen model and stage actress by 19 in nyc. Then breakdowns started. I was a good child and well liked by all. I had a prominent future. Then my brain was tormented for years. I am so grateful my brain is calm now. A real daily treat of existance. There's this big part of me that just wants a simple job that makes enough money for me to live in a little apartment with maybe a cat. And like that's it. Everybody else in my age group have these big plans with their life centering on a career and I've been told ever since I've been in school that a career should be my goal and so I've felt like maybe there is something wrong with me. I don't really want a career. I'd just like a job. This video made me feel better about that.

Yesterday I rode for the whole day through Germany on the train from NW to SE (Aachen to Munich). At sunset I was looking outside and it hit me. The fast life is that of being in the train all your life, you get to see the beautiful fields, the different colors of the sky, and markers of the season. But you never get to plough a field, to smell a maturing flower, to live close to the animals and the trees. Not to mention whats beyond those farms, the coast lines, the hidden escapes, the mysterious roads... So at the next train stop, get out there, get your feet in the mud, and smell those wild flowers, before you reach you desitination

I've always considered enjoying a quiet life as a personal goal of mine. As an introvert, I dream about leaving the 'rat race' and moving into a peaceful, aesthetically pleasing place in the country side. There I could pursue some intellectually and physically fulfilling activities, and live in a simple and meaningful way. Fame and great wealth are definitely not appealing to everyone. Still, it's the goal that society seems to impose on the general public.

I often feel that my lack of self confidence is really all that separates me from being happy, since whenever I think about it, I find that I personally don't need much at all to feel good, it's all the external pressure I feel to be much bigger and much better that makes me feel so small. It's come to the point where I feel bad just for not having those ambitions - that whole "you don't want it because you know you can't have it" way of thinking the video mentions.

I overcame the inertia a few years ago when I lost most of the things that made up my world. To my surprise, it felt liberating. Now I feel less cluttered, my thinking is clearer, I am more aware and compassionate, the choices I make are a lot more wise and based in what I want (which implies that I had to understand myself and what's best for me in the first place), I am amazed by the beauty and richness of the world, more careful with the things I do decide to bring into my life and I just feel more fulfilled. There is a certain kind of beauty and freedom in a minimalistic lifestyle and now that I came to know and love it, I wouldn't give it away for anything. I'm glad somebody took the time to explain all this in such a lovely manner. I will point people to this video next time I'm asked about my life choices.
I keep coming back to this. I have high ambitions, and yet the road toward it rips my soul apart. I'm coming to terms with the fact that prestige and honor is not worth my soul and peace of mind. Some prices are just too high for certain types of character.
I can relate to that I live in Hong Kong. It is busy and expensive. The housing price of new built has reached 3000 USD per square foot. With the price of 500 square foot that is 1.5million USD, you can buy a 10 bedrooms castle in Scotland. the advantage of living a quiet life in a country is that it is much cheaper :)
I come from a small scandinavian village. I now live in Amsterdam. Altho im still depressed, im way less depressed than at ”home”. Im very openminded and philosophical. Nobody undarstood my and i didnt feel a connection to anyone. I didnt want to live in the social game that everyone seemed to like back there. This doesnt apply to alot of situations. I feel more silence here.

It's a kind of balance I think. Sometimes you're bored as all hell and you yearn for more in your life. Other times, you want to do nothing at all because you feel run down. To each his own, right? I don't smoke but I occasionally drink. I'm in bed by 11 PM, and make sure I get 8 hours of sleep no matter what. after a glass of warm milk and doing about twenty minutes of stretches before going to bed, I usually have no problem sleeping until morning. Just like a baby, I wake up without any fatigue or stress in the morning. I was told there was no issues at my last checkup.

Compromising political ideals in order to suffer less. This video makes a very idealistic image of living the quiet life, in real life, you'll probably won't live on the mountain side. You still have to pay taxes and even tho you feel autonomous, your peers will always continue to influence your ambitions and behavior. I think the best way to go is to think why do you do what you do? Do you have enough time to enjoy life for what it is? Are your ambitions a reflection of yourself? or a reflection of other peoples expectations about you? I think striving for integrity is the mid-way between the quiet life and a killing carreer. also the most realistic one imo :P

It is the age of information overload. I'm constantly bombarded by advertisements and click-bait at every turn. Teens cannot go more than 5 minutes without checking their cellphones. There are 157 channels on TV and nothing on. Highways are packed with vehicles. It goes on and on. I refuse to get a smartphone cos I don't want people who want something bothering me every minute, especially when I go out the door. Very soon I will be downsizing to a smaller manufactured home on a small plot so I will have fewer expenses and more recreational time. Is it any wonder the therapists have all the business they can handle with stressed out adults and teens who have no idea how to take a walk in the woods and relax.
gwwayner I go days without checking my cellphone and it honestly frees me. People always bother me when they know I'm on, asking for something or wanting something. The media has practically ruined everything. Can't even read a newspaper without literally being like read-baited. I wish we could go back to like 2000.
It’s not that the phone is a bad thing. It introduces us to good ideas and gives us grasps of knowledge we never knew we were inclined too. It’s how you use your phone which indicates the state of your mind. If u watch videos which help your contemplation and help you gain knowledge the phone is not a waste of time. But again you can use your phone to always stress your mind by watching something you know is not good for your mental state and gives this sort of mind state to always text and catch up with people and that really does not help you with the peace of mind. In all the cellphone is only a distracting device if you choose it to be. For me it is beneficial as it gives me knowledge to contemplate deeper about my past, present, future and pleases my state of mind, it keeps me at peace.
I love all the school of life videos, but I think this is one of the most touching for me so far (and, by synchronicity or not, came to me at the perfect time). I've never been an ambitious person when it came to career. And because of that I felt (and still do feel) strange, like an outsider in my heavily career driven community. I don't dare to share that maybe all I wanted would be to work at a small bookstore with my peers, because that would seem stupid and a waste of my parents' efforts to give me a good education. Yet, all this pressure haven't changed what I felt, only made me approach it with a mean gaze - thinking I am probably just a lazy fool. It's videos like this one that make me feel validated in my "weird" existence, and for that I am truly grateful to the creators of school of life.
So many of my friends and former coworkers dont understand why I opted to live as an artist. Do I make a lot of money? Not even remotely! Do I have to rely on friends and family for things like food? Hell yes! Am I a parasite on society? Probably! But what I don't have anymore is the constant stress and uncertainty of the workplace. I dont get treated like garbage, constantly being told that nothing I ever do is good enough. I don't wake up after two hours of sleep ready to pull another 13 hour shift. I don't feel that constant burning rage under every breath anymore. I can sit back and enjoy the simple rotation of the earth. I can get proper sleep. I can BREATHE. Would I like to be making more money than I do? Well yeah. With money comes ease of life. But with taking things at my own pace comes ease of existence, and that means more to me in the end.

I feel like modern society made us unaware of our obsession with wealth and status. This is most common in big cities, where I see people just work their ass off, and they're constantly reminded that they are worthless. OR they start to have a nasty ego after gaining some status. When they're trying to be "social", they don't actually care how people are doing. They just want to know that they're doing better. I try to stay away from those types of people. It's depressing to see people act like that.
Thats why I hate social groups more than 3 people, anymore than that people start to become less interested in exchanging deep thoughts and feelings, and the whole social thing just turns into a show off contest

As a registered nurse, I can totally understand the need for a quiet life. If I had been told the truth by college counselors about the sum of life this career drains from your soul. I would have run away so fast it would have been record breaking!
This video has its roots among the privilige, people from many areas exist where farming doesn't fill the plate enough for a two-meal-a-day lifestyle. I feel as if they have taken thoughts directly from my head. I have a seemingly radical view among my peers at school, and that I do not care for status and wealth. I don't care if I make $20000 or $70000, but if it cuts off my happiness, then I would avoid it. My classmates and everyone else at school, even siblings and parents say that I need to get good grades, to then go to college, then get a job to make money, retire at 60 with a good amount of money set aside for retirement and family. But I realize that the lofty idea that this can happen will most likely not happen. But yet I'm told to avoid my feelings of ideas of the future to focus on the assignment at hand, doing another worksheet that I know will never contribute to anything other then a score in some online book that states how good I am to society.
+Caius Filimon I think you are right. Short-term happiness doesn't necessarily mean long term happiness. You can have a hedonistic youth that you pay the ramifications of later on. That being said, burning yourself out at a young age can leave you bitter to the point that you can't enjoy your later years. As with most things, it's a delicate balance and some hard-to-find spot in between the two extremes. Something to consider.

Im 40, work in the Covid unit of a major hospital, live in the same studio/apt for 10 yrs, commute everywhere on bike and just lead a quiet life in the middle of a big city. 2020 was a good year to me.
I left the busy corporate job life at the age of 25 ( I realized quickly that a cooperate life is a wasted life) I'm almost 32 and still living the quiet life never regretted leaving the job world and loving every minute of it. No alarm clocks, no stress, and no boss. Every minute is my own to do with it as I wish and every day is a new adventure.

It is wonderful that you want to learn German. It is a very impressive language! You know, for this, there are Goethe Institute's everywhere. If there is one in your town, you could start there. If you prefer to learn by yourself, the best online course is Rosetta Stone. But if you don't want to pay, you can also go to the Duolingo websight. That's very good too. If you want to go to the university here in Germany and want to study music, you can consider going to Dresden. There they have a world music department. You could study acoustic guitar/jazz with a professor named Thomas Fellow. Just go to his website, choose English, and on the right click on "Teaching", you will see everything about the studying programm. One thing about Dresden is that unfortunately after the refugee crisis, there had been a rise in Neo-Nazi movement. But of course they aren't all like that. Besides everybody love Brazilians:-) And they say the city itself is wonderful too. In Germany the universities are for free. You could also study jazz in Holland, but there you will have to pay. Oi Vinicius! That's great news! I knew you were making your own music, but you didn't tell me that you were studying music in such a great university. So I am sure it won't be hard for you to be accepted to a university here. Besides, it is always flattering for a professor, having a musician coming from overseas to study with him. The important thing is to apply to several schools ( at least three I would say) and then choose at the end the one you like the most. I am glad you have time. +The School of Life thank you for putting these concepts out there. so many goals that we believe are our own are actually just memetic legacies. being ludicrously wealthy, having fast cars, having lots of children and even attending a prestigious college... alot of the time we strive for these goals because it's what we believe "everyone wants" but not everyone wants these things. not really. maybe they're only doing it because their parents did. and their parents may have only done it because their parents did. one of the greatest challenges in life (to my understanding) is learning how to separate what you actually want from what you think you want.
A quiet life, for me, is a life away from toxicity, peer-pressure, and stress. A quiet life, for me, is a life with self-confidence, mindfulness, and kindness. A quiet life, for me, is not a life of poverty, recluse, and laziness. A quiet life, for me, is a bliss.
Having lived for several years on both extremes of the spectrum, I can confidently say that the extremes are problems, not because of their different attributes, but because they're extremes. To be happy, you need balance. You won't be content with a too simple job, just admiring nature for the rest of your life, if you're an intelligent, creative person. Equally you don't want to waste your life/time on things that does not truly matter to you. In essence you want freedom AND a stimulating challenge that capitalizes on your abilities and rewards you properly. You want relaxation AND stimuli for suffering - because suffering demands expansion of your consciousness and turns into growth. Jordan Peterson said it well when he said CHOOSE your damn sacrifice. That's the key, making a conscious, intelligent choice, rather than passing up the opportunity, or choosing unwisely, and ending up with less optimal types sacrifices and suffering.
Wow, I needed to hear that. I always feel so under pressure to do something BIG but I get overwhelmed by the thought of it and I'd just rather relax, learn new skills, and enjoy my life.

Joblessness is a very real problem in the UK. There is unemployment because there aren't enough jobs for everyone. If we could accept that some people are able to live happily on a reduced income then we could leave the available jobs for those who feel that they 'need' to work. Some folks completely identify with their jobs and don't have the imagination to live without identifying themselves in an employed role. Perhaps one day we will reaslie that 'not working by the clock as a wage slave isn't the only way to be.
Thank you Matt, it's good to have people support this view. Way back when the silicone chip made its appearance many folks were concerned about the loss of jobs due to computers. Suddenly only one person was doing a job that previously employed 3 or 4 people. Concerns were raised and the government assured us that there would be enough work in the leisure industry to compensate for the loss of jobs. The figures didn't adequately take into account the growth of our population, ( and remember folks leave the uk as well as enter it, so no comments on immigration), and they didn't take into account that computers would reduce jobs within the leisure industry. But I guess they'd rather we point a finger at the 'unemployed' than take responsibility for the REAL situation.

In this age of the internet, where everybody knows everything about everybody, and everyone has a presence on social media, soon the most fashionable, prestigious thing will be complete invisibility, privacy, and anonymity.

As someone who grew up with a volatile father and abusive home life, I know for sure all I want is days to wake up feeling peaceful. That's it. I couldn't and don't want to ask for more than that. A simple life is the happy ending I deserve.
I wonder if it could just be a case of longing for what you don't have. As a person in involuntary poverty, now that I just started working in an office, I feel so incredibly fulfilled by it, and I find that I love paperwork, because of how it feels like I'm doing something important, or something that matters to someone. I don't think I could stand the idea of living simply on a farm or a mountain. Maybe that'll come to change in several years, I can't know for sure.

I've always felt I was born in the wrong age..I would have been a great hunter/gatherer..I'm strong and tenacious, compassionate, and a quick thinker with high intuition..I would find and bring home food and fight off predators to protect my family..But here I sit alone, thinking about how many men in this age I see that would just fold doing these things..but yet, I'm alone in this day and age, living a quiet life, eating from a can (ie prepared foods) and dream of my highest potential on a mountain picking Chrysanthemums for a wife and family..Maybe all us quiet lifers were born at the wrong time..

I'm thinking that, in an objective sense in an indifferent universe, there's no such thing as a right or wrong path. On a personal, subjective sense, I think the right path is considering the situation you are in now and trying to veer yourself toward what will make you happy (while striving not to cause harm to others along the way), as that is the only thing you are able to do to try to achieve happiness. But I don't think people are born at the wrong time. I think you're just born when you are born.

I once saw graffiti that said "Stop the glorification of being busy." It made me pause and think about why we glorify running around to the beat of another person's drum. I saw that about a dozen years ago, and never forgot it.
And not sleeping! I'm still struggling with undoing that idea, that resting early is a waste of time and something losers do, better to run on fumes and live on coffee and brag about that.
OH man the quite life...something I had as a child in my home village in Africa. Then we moved to the west...10 years later barely 23 years old, knee deep in school debt, majorly depressed and stressed out at work because I'm too "passive", "too timid"- I miss my village days- ....that's why I like that song by 21 pilots, "We used to play pretend, give each other different names, we would build a rocket ship and then we'd fly it far away...but now their laughing in our face, saying..wake up, YOU NEED TO MAKE MONEY!"

Happiness does not come from outside, but from within. I agree completely with your message. If we are not able to find peace and comfort within our own turbulent minds, then how our we going to fair when we include more dynamic and complex relationships and ventures to our daily living? Situations will become more complicated and our minds will be more demanding. Exterior goals should only be sought after when we have a concrete foundation to sustain their purpose. But we acquire that meaning through inter-reflections to know oneself.

I think this is spot on. There's been many times people are criticised for "lacking ambition" when they don't aim for a promotion or a bigger job, but sometimes it's because you realise you don't need it. Why risk more stress if you are already content with what you have? And if you're not content, it's important to realise the reputation and value gained from a higher position and pay won't make a difference. I've known many people that have gone for a harder job because they think it will make them feel better about themselves, it never does, not truly.

I know that's relative, but we should all pause once in a while, slow down and enjoy the simple things God has blessed us with. I think I already am living the "quiet life". Well, atleast technology wise. I don'thave Facebook nor a twitter account and if i had i would nly use it for work if it was demanded of me. I still use my smartphone as a normal cellphone i grew up with and the only "social media" i use is TH-cam. I couldn't have been better off. Yeah, sure i have become more isolated because of it but i have become the wiser for it too. Especially about myself.
Totally agree. My family when they get together all they talk is about work, money ,money, money.... They do my head in. I see other people do it at functions. Huge cars my old friends have. Huge houses. I think is this what it takes to make you happy. And they reluctantly buy you a coffee when you make an effort to see them once in a while. I keep myself to myself now.

There is one group that is forgotten in this video, and they often choose the quiet life. That group is the mentally ill, especially schizophrenics and schizoaffectives. They have enough noise and static in their head that they have to choose a quiet life. It's not a choice. It is a necessity. They often live in poverty and many of them are extremely bright. They just kind of fall off the grid. Society does not understand them. We live in a noisy and busy world which is constantly centered around making money and being productive. I think it's time to give respect to those who choose to live the quiet life and live life on their own terms. The next time you see a homeless man, you may want to think twice about who he is exactly. He may be a brilliant genius who has mental illness and he has no choice to choose the quiet life.

There's this big part of me that just wants a simple job that makes enough money for me to live in a little apartment with maybe a cat. And like that's it. Everybody else in my age group have these big plans with their life centering on a career and I've been told ever since I've been in school that a career should be my goal and so I've felt like maybe there is something wrong with me. I don't really want a career. I'd just like a job. This video made me feel better about that.

Yesterday I rode for the whole day through Germany on the train from NW to SE (Aachen to Munich). At sunset I was looking outside and it hit me. The fast life is that of being in the train all your life, you get to see the beautiful fields, the different colors of the sky, and markers of the season. But you never get to plough a field, to smell a maturing flower, to live close to the animals and the trees. Not to mention whats beyond those farms, the coast lines, the hidden escapes, the mysterious roads...
So at the next train stop, get out there, get your feet in the mud, and smell those wild flowers, before you reach you desitination

I overcame the inertia a few years ago when I lost most of the things that made up my world. To my surprise, it felt liberating. Now I feel less cluttered, my thinking is clearer, I am more aware and compassionate, the choices I make are a lot more wise and based in what I want (which implies that I had to understand myself and what's best for me in the first place), I am amazed by the beauty and richness of the world, more careful with the things I do decide to bring into my life and I just feel more fulfilled. There is a certain kind of beauty and freedom in a minimalistic lifestyle and now that I came to know and love it, I wouldn't give it away for anything. I'm glad somebody took the time to explain all this in such a lovely manner. I will point people to this video next time I'm asked about my life choices.

I can relate to that I live in Hong Kong. It is busy and expensive. The housing price of new built has reached 3000 USD per square foot. With the price of 500 square foot that is 1.5million USD, you can buy a 10 bedrooms castle in Scotland. the advantage of living a quiet life in a country is that it is much cheaper :)
I come from a small scandinavian village. I now live in Amsterdam. Altho im still depressed, im way less depressed than at ”home”. Im very openminded and philosophical. Nobody undarstood my and i didnt feel a connection to anyone. I didnt want to live in the social game that everyone seemed to like back there. This doesnt apply to alot of situations. I feel more silence here.

My name is yoshikage Kira I am 33 years old my house is in the northeast section of morioh where all the villas are, I am not married, I work as an employee for the kame yu department stores, I get home every day at 8 PM at the latest. I don't smoke but I occasionally drink. I'm in bed by 11 PM, and make sure I get 8 hours of sleep no matter what. after a glass of warm milk and doing about twenty minutes of stretches before going to bed, I usually have no problem sleeping until morning. Just like a baby, I wake up without any fatigue or stress in the morning. I was told there was no issues at my last checkup.

This video makes a very idealistic image of living the quiet life, in real life, you'll probably won't live on the mountain side. You still have to pay taxes and even tho you feel autonomous, your peers will always continue to influence your ambitions and behavior. I think the best way to go is to think why do you do what you do? Do you have enough time to enjoy life for what it is? Are your ambitions a reflection of yourself? or a reflection of other peoples expectations about you? I think striving for integrity is the mid-way between the quiet life and a killing carreer. also the most realistic one imo :P

It is the age of information overload. I'm constantly bombarded by advertisements and click-bait at every turn. Teens cannot go more than 5 minutes without checking their cellphones. There are 157 channels on TV and nothing on. Highways are packed with vehicles. It goes on and on. I refuse to get a smartphone cos I don't want people who want something bothering me every minute, especially when I go out the door. Very soon I will be downsizing to a smaller manufactured home on a small plot so I will have fewer expenses and more recreational time. Is it any wonder the therapists have all the business they can handle with stressed out adults and teens who have no idea how to take a walk in the woods and relax.
gwwayner I go days without checking my cellphone and it honestly frees me. People always bother me when they know I'm on, asking for something or wanting something. The media has practically ruined everything. Can't even read a newspaper without literally being like read-baited. I wish we could go back to like 2000.

It’s not that the phone is a bad thing. It introduces us to good ideas and gives us grasps of knowledge we never knew we were inclined too. It’s how you use your phone which indicates the state of your mind. If u watch videos which help your contemplation and help you gain knowledge the phone is not a waste of time. But again you can use your phone to always stress your mind by watching something you know is not good for your mental state and gives this sort of mind state to always text and catch up with people and that really does not help you with the peace of mind. In all the cellphone is only a distracting device if you choose it to be. For me it is beneficial as it gives me knowledge to contemplate deeper about my past, present, future and pleases my state of mind, it keeps me at peace.

I love all the school of life videos, but I think this is one of the most touching for me so far (and, by synchronicity or not, came to me at the perfect time). I've never been an ambitious person when it came to career. And because of that I felt (and still do feel) strange, like an outsider in my heavily career driven community. I don't dare to share that maybe all I wanted would be to work at a small bookstore with my peers, because that would seem stupid and a waste of my parents' efforts to give me a good education. Yet, all this pressure haven't changed what I felt, only made me approach it with a mean gaze - thinking I am probably just a lazy fool. It's videos like this one that make me feel validated in my "weird" existence, and for that I am truly grateful to the creators of school of life.

So many of my friends and former coworkers dont understand why I opted to live as an artist.
Do I make a lot of money? Not even remotely!
Do I have to rely on friends and family for things like food? Hell yes!
Am I a parasite on society? Probably!
But what I don't have anymore is the constant stress and uncertainty of the workplace. I dont get treated like garbage, constantly being told that nothing I ever do is good enough. I don't wake up after two hours of sleep ready to pull another 13 hour shift. I don't feel that constant burning rage under every breath anymore. I can sit back and enjoy the simple rotation of the earth. I can get proper sleep. I can BREATHE.
Would I like to be making more money than I do? Well yeah. With money comes ease of life. But with taking things at my own pace comes ease of existence, and that means more to me in the end.
I´m an introverted schizophrenic, and over the years I´ve mastered the art of living in a manner that is outwardly simple and unremarkable yet inwardly very fulfilling and rewarding. :)
I feel like modern society made us unaware of our obsession with wealth and status. This is most common in big cities, where I see people just work their ass off, and they're constantly reminded that they are worthless. OR they start to have a nasty ego after gaining some status. When they're trying to be "social", they don't actually care how people are doing. They just want to know that they're doing better. I try to stay away from those types of people. It's depressing to see people act like that.
Thats why I hate social groups more than 3 people, anymore than that people start to become less interested in exchanging deep thoughts and feelings, and the whole social thing just turns into a show off contest

This video has its roots among the privilige, people from many areas exist where farming doesn't fill the plate enough for a two-meal-a-day lifestyle. People wanting to live simply ironically need to save enough money to keep them alive, and more or less need to get into the rat race of money in the beginning

I feel as if they have taken thoughts directly from my head. I have a seemingly radical view among my peers at school, and that I do not care for status and wealth. I don't care if I make $20000 or $70000, but if it cuts off my happiness, then I would avoid it. My classmates and everyone else at school, even siblings and parents say that I need to get good grades, to then go to college, then get a job to make money, retire at 60 with a good amount of money set aside for retirement and family.
But I realize that the lofty idea that this can happen will most likely not happen. But yet I'm told to avoid my feelings of ideas of the future to focus on the assignment at hand, doing another worksheet that I know will never contribute to anything other then a score in some online book that states how good I am to society.
+Caius Filimon I think you are right. Short-term happiness doesn't necessarily mean long term happiness. You can have a hedonistic youth that you pay the ramifications of later on. That being said, burning yourself out at a young age can leave you bitter to the point that you can't enjoy your later years. As with most things, it's a delicate balance and some hard-to-find spot in between the two extremes. Something to consider.

Yessss, I understand, brother! I felt this way in High School and everyone just thought I was lazy. They were the lazy ones though. They were too lazy to ask themselves the tough questions.

Im 40, work in the Covid unit of a major hospital, live in the same studio/apt for 10 yrs, commute everywhere on bike and just lead a quiet life in the middle of a big city. 2020 was a good year to me.
I left the busy corporate job life at the age of 25 ( I realized quickly that a cooperate life is a wasted life) I'm almost 32 and still living the quiet life never regretted leaving the job world and loving every minute of it. No alarm clocks, no stress, and no boss. Every minute is my own to do with it as I wish and every day is a new adventure.

Me and my dad aspire for a kind of reclusion from the city, the busy schedule, the stress and constant fear.
We plan leaving the capital, to go live by the beach. It makes me happy to think this may occur soon, for I see no beauty in letting the city consume our precious time. Of course money is good, but what does it worth if you dont have time to spend it with things you like? As a musician, all I want is to make my art and study a lot, in peace, by the beach.

It is wonderful that you want to learn German. It is a very impressive language! You know, for this, there are Goethe Institute's everywhere. If there is one in your town, you could start there. If you prefer to learn by yourself, the best online course is Rosetta Stone. But if you don't want to pay, you can also go to the Duolingo websight. That's very good too.
If you want to go to the university here in Germany and want to study music, you can consider going to Dresden. There they have a world music department. You could study acoustic guitar/jazz with a professor named Thomas Fellow. Just go to his website, choose English, and on the right click on "Teaching", you will see everything about the studying programm.
One thing about Dresden is that unfortunately after the refugee crisis, there had been a rise in Neo-Nazi movement. But of course they aren't all like that. Besides everybody love Brazilians:-)
And they say the city itself is wonderful too. In Germany the universities are for free. You could also study jazz in Holland, but there you will have to pay.

Oi Vinicius! That's great news! I knew you were making your own music, but you didn't tell me that you were studying music in such a great university. So I am sure it won't be hard for you to be accepted to a university here. Besides, it is always flattering for a professor, having a musician coming from overseas to study with him. The important thing is to apply to several schools ( at least three I would say) and then choose at the end the one you like the most. I am glad you have time. one of the greatest challenges in life (to my understanding) is learning how to separate what you actually want from what you think you want.

Having lived for several years on both extremes of the spectrum, I can confidently say that the extremes are problems, not because of their different attributes, but because they're extremes. To be happy, you need balance. You won't be content with a too simple job, just admiring nature for the rest of your life, if you're an intelligent, creative person. Equally you don't want to waste your life/time on things that does not truly matter to you. In essence you want freedom AND a stimulating challenge that capitalizes on your abilities and rewards you properly. You want relaxation AND stimuli for suffering - because suffering demands expansion of your consciousness and turns into growth. Jordan Peterson said it well when he said CHOOSE your damn sacrifice. That's the key, making a conscious, intelligent choice, rather than passing up the opportunity, or choosing unwisely, and ending up with less optimal types sacrifices and suffering.
Wow, I needed to hear that. I always feel so under pressure to do something BIG but I get overwhelmed by the thought of it and I'd just rather relax, learn new skills, and enjoy my life.

Joblessness is a very real problem in the UK. There is unemployment because there aren't enough jobs for everyone. If we could accept that some people are able to live happily on a reduced income then we could leave the available jobs for those who feel that they 'need' to work. Some folks completely identify with their jobs and don't have the imagination to live without identifying themselves in an employed role. Perhaps one day we will reaslie that 'not working by the clock as a wage slave isn't the only way to be.

Thank you Matt, it's good to have people support this view. Way back when the silicone chip made its appearance many folks were concerned about the loss of jobs due to computers. Suddenly only one person was doing a job that previously employed 3 or 4 people. Concerns were raised and the government assured us that there would be enough work in the leisure industry to compensate for the loss of jobs. The figures didn't adequately take into account the growth of our population, ( and remember folks leave the uk as well as enter it, so no comments on immigration), and they didn't take into account that computers would reduce jobs within the leisure industry. But I guess they'd rather we point a finger at the 'unemployed' than take responsibility for the REAL situation.

In this age of the internet, where everybody knows everything about everybody, and everyone has a presence on social media, soon the most fashionable, prestigious thing will be complete invisibility, privacy, and anonymity.
I see how a lot of people could miss the reason this video is so important for us to appreciate. You can live a peaceful, quiet life and still be ambitious. Sometimes it takes taking a moment of reflection for the important things to become clear in life. As someone who grew up with a volatile father and abusive home life, I know for sure all I want is days to wake up feeling peaceful. That's it. I couldn't and don't want to ask for more than that. A simple life is the happy ending I deserve.
I wonder if it could just be a case of longing for what you don't have. As a person in involuntary poverty, now that I just started working in an office, I feel so incredibly fulfilled by it, and I find that I love paperwork, because of how it feels like I'm doing something important, or something that matters to someone. I don't think I could stand the idea of living simply on a farm or a mountain. Maybe that'll come to change in several years, I can't know for sure.
That's because everyone is different. You may enjoy the paperwork but someone else enjoys the farm.

I've always felt I was born in the wrong age..I would have been a great hunter/gatherer..I'm strong and tenacious, compassionate, and a quick thinker with high intuition..I would find and bring home food and fight off predators to protect my family..But here I sit alone, thinking about how many men in this age I see that would just fold doing these things..but yet, I'm alone in this day and age, living a quiet life, eating from a can (ie prepared foods) and dream of my highest potential on a mountain picking Chrysanthemums for a wife and family..Maybe all us quiet lifers were born at the wrong time..

I'm thinking that, in an objective sense in an indifferent universe, there's no such thing as a right or wrong path.
On a personal, subjective sense, I think the right path is considering the situation you are in now and trying to veer yourself toward what will make you happy (while striving not to cause harm to others along the way), as that is the only thing you are able to do to try to achieve happiness.
But I don't think people are born at the wrong time. I think you're just born when you are born.
