Let me preface this by saying I am not a big time sewer. I can hem and do minor things with my sewing machine (I'm 56) but let me tell you! lol I watched your video to the end, walked into my craft room, cut the Reese's bag and (with minor changes since I didn't have the sticky vinyl) I CREATED A ZIPPERED BAG! I'm so excited. You even showed me how to put in a zipper that I'd never seen before but that is the best tip I've learned in a long time. I love the extra pop that the material on the zipper ends gave. You have made me very happy today. I thank you and my Mom (83) will thank you when she receives her new Reese's bag which are her favorite candies.

My mother and I wanted to make this a long time using plastic bags that had my family company logo on it. My father closed the business several years ago. My parents both passed in the recent months and in cleaning out we came across the company bags. So I just made one and it is fabulous! These will be great gifts for my siblings, nieces and nephews. A wonderful memento for everyone.

I had the idea to use this tutorial to make bags out of vintage pattern envelopes. After 2 bags that weren't good enough to give as gifts, #3 finally came out to my satisfaction. If you are using vintage pattern envelopes, you might consider the following modifications: after bonding the vinyl and squaring up the front and back, use a 1 inch fabric strip (either the same as the lining, or a contrasting fabric) to border all sides of the front and back. I also cut the 2 bottom corners with my curved ruler, so that the 2 bottom corners were not square, but rounded. You could use a small plate to get the same effect. The first 2 bags, I quilted. The third bag, I just stitched in the ditch (between the pattern and the fabric strip). Turning the bag right side out is a challenge, and having the bottom corners rounded makes it just a little bit easier. The other thing I noticed is that the pattern becomes wrinkled as a result of turning it right side out. I can't see any way to avoid that. I did try putting the finished bag in the ironing board, covering it with the paper that came off the vinyl . . . but no difference. Still a great idea. One bag finished. Five more to go.

A helpful hint for turning vinyl inside out is to heat up your ironing board then lay the pouch on it to warm it up. It turns a lot easier when it is warm. Works well for all vinyl & oilcloth. Love your bags!

You never fail in your great tutorials. Easy to follow. My daughter loved the bag I made her. Candy bar is a Big Hunk. An old candy that is for sure. It came with a clear window in the front. So instead of looking at the batting, I put some lining material in the window. But if I was really thinking.....I could have put rapers from the candy bar in the window going all different directions, then the lining material. What a simple amazing wonderful project. Thank you being a amazing wonderful person. I wish I could have met you when I visited Hamilton a couple of years ago. P.S. not sure what needle to use sewing on vinyl, so I used a Sharps needle.

    Hey Jenny!
Well this just proves, one woman's trash is a quilters treasure!😉 I love it and my family will love the presents I have in mind for each of them. I love your teaching style. I would never have been able to quilt without your tutorials. I know you are not going to believe this but I have never read a pattern successfully. I have to watch a process to understand it. I have always struggled with this, let's just say Mrs. Leaphart, my high school Home Ec teacher, retired after teaching me. Anyway, you give such JOY to my life with quilting, sewing, and crafting. Thank you Jenny! Have a blessed and happy Fourth of July 😘!!

Laura, I just wanted to let you know that there are many of us out here that can learn by seeing and doing better than reading. And if you go back and read the directions after you’ve seen someone do it, they tend to make sense ‘then’. There are visual learners, auditory learners, and kinesthetic (sp?) learners. The more you engage all three areas the more connections in the brain it makes. AND the best way to put something in permanently, show someone else how to do it. That’s how a little girl that I taught some basic sewing skills to, at age 7, was teaching her friends how to sew in zippers by age 10. You tube videos became her source when I moved away. She even won a district sewing award at 11 from Kohl’s Find someone to share with. And have a wonder filled day.

Me too!! Me too!! This ol’ grandma has been sewing since she was 7. I even made my own wedding gown. Put a quilt pattern WITH precuts in front of me and promise me the (guaranteed) winning lottery ticket plus a bag of mini m&ms if I finish and I’ll still be poor and sugar deprived at the end of the day. I need a good Missouri Star video first.

These candy bags are a huge hit! The year I saw this in your Block magazine I made about 30 of these for Grandchildren and friends using their favorite candies. They are still in high demand. I'd like to suggest when you are giving a tutorial for quilts, pouches, runners, etc. you let us know if they are in a Block mag. and which one. I spend a lot of time researching where I saw that in print since I have so many of your Blocks. That way I can use the printed info along with watching the video when creating. Thanks, Jenny and Friends!

I watched this tut last night. Today I'm buying candy just for the bag. Tip, I thought I would be clever and press the candy bag before I applied the vinyl. Don't do it! It rolled up so tight, I had to tape it down with painter's tape just to apply the vinyl. That worked fine, then I applied the vinyl. This project is the cutest thing and I'm seeing myself making lots of these for my friends, coworkers and family! There are so many items that come in these plastic bags. I work with a girl from Jamaica , she loves Jasmine rice, I will make her a jasmine rice zip bag.

Can the iron on vinyl be ironed onto both sides (on top of candy bag and also on top of the fabric lining) of the bag so that the inside of the bag will also be waterproof? It'll make an excellent bag for toothbrushes, small bottles shampoo, etc., especially for my grandchildren to take those items to mamaw's house for sleepovers.
