If live action remake happens I'm going opening night to point and laugh, and I am curious how bad they can fuck up Kaneda's powerbike cause you know they will.
well, you shouldn't forget that budget of this anime was skyhigh for whole anime industry of its time. And besides it failed on theatres ))) But sure it is something special and outstanding I'd also advice you to watch Ouritsu Uchuugun: Honneamise no Tsubasa (Royal Space Force). Its detalisation is also superhigh and eyecandy!

So you can't compare two different arts. If you want to know my PERSONAL opinion, I think that Akira film is one of the best if not the best animation in History. Manga has other beautiful things, but you can't compare the two, they are two different masterpieces. Otomo didn't compress anything, making the film longer consists in creating a TV Serie and not a Film.

I just watched the whole movie yesterday after edging on the opening scene for years. And I gotta say, it was everything I expected it to be judging from the articles I've read about it. I'm no film connoisseur by any means, nor do I watch enough anime for my opinions to be deemed valid, but the pacing was admittedly a bit all over the place. Aesthetically speaking though, this gem from 1988 is still a fucking treat to the eyes. Granted the artstyle ain't for everyone, especially to anyone who actively avoid anime made before 2000 and heavily prefer the ones made during the 2010s. To me however, Otomo's artsyle ain't like anything else I've seen before, and I fucking love it. Everything, from the backgrounds, to the characters and vehicles moving on-screen, have this certain level of detail and grit to them. While that did drive a good portion of the studios that worked on the film to bankruptcy, I'd say it was well worth it in the coming years. I think modern anime fans should atleast try watching it just for the amount of hard work put into bringing Katsuhiro's, well atleast some of the important parts of his vision to the big screen. It's just that good.
Two thoughts: I need to watch Akira again.
And, I hope that American live-action remake never happens.
