@@sofiaflorina that's one of the reasons why I don't watch the recent anime, the colors are so bright, there's no elegance in the characters movements and when almost all new anime used CGI. I don't like it. I'm not hater tho. If I saw a good anime, I just go and read the manga unless it is hand drawn.
A bit of context - this film is Super Dimension Fortress Macross - Do You Remember Love. Released in 1984, it had a $4MM budget ($9MM today). For any animated film this was a huge budget, which is one of the reasons it holds up so well today. It also had some huge talents, such as character designer Haruhiko Mikimoto
To add a little more detail for anyone else still reading; it's a movie adaptation of the anime show Super Dimension Fortress Macross, which people of a certain age outside of Japan might better know as the first season of Robotech. More fun facts; the creator of the Macross franchise, Shoji Kawamori, was one of the designers of Optimus Prime's original look; another anime you might know him for is The Vision of Escaflowne. Also, a good many of Macross's designs actually made their way into earlier editions of BattleTech, before they got sued into taking them out, such as the Warhammer (whose design was taken from Macross's Destroid Tomahawk).
I work at a cute Sanrio/KPop store in Washington, and we're allowed to play our own music as long as it fits the vibe of the store. I've made a playlist with dozens of different Japanese and Korean songs. Out of all the songs I play, this one always gets the whole store moving again. I usually open the shop while this is playing, since it's such a powerful sound. You can literally feel the beat through your feet when this is playing. I love it!
I’m currently in school for animation and I’ve gotta say... The visuals of Macross is spectacular, but really thinking about it, all of the effects, drawings, and layers put into each frame must’ve been an absolute HELL. I don’t think anyone outside of animation truly understands just how much work TRULY goes into making cartoons, and lengthy animated films. Once you understand how much blood, sweat, and tears goes into animation, you’ll appreciate it to a whole other level. The Japanese are strict, disciplined, and very hard working individuals. When it comes to animating, they’re at an entirely different level in comparison to animatiors from the States.
Drawing is hard... animation is that times 5 trillion. You can draw well but you have to understand motion and timing. You can spend hours on a drawing... but when you're doing thousands upon thousands- it's harder to have as much detail. Comics can easily have so much detail because it is only one frame conveying an entire action or series of actions. The Japanese are so devoted. I am starting to get more into 80's anime. I believe cartoons at that time (and even today probably though I haven't kept up with as much of that) were superior to what we had on Saturday mornings in the U.S. though there might have still been quite a few gems. Personally I haven't seen much of U.S. 80's cartoons that I can remember right off the bat. 80's Japan and 90's as well as today display animation at probably the highest extent of what it can do. There were great animators outside Japan though like Richard Williams. Imagine if he was Japanese and/or made anime. That would make our entire dimension shake... more like all the universes.
Justin Wah .Well American Saturday morning cartoons weren’t meant to be revolutionary. Almost all of them existed as giant advertisements for the toys they’re based on. Seriously, so many 80’s American cartoons are based on toys.
Same thing with most 80's anime, most of them were made to be a toy commercial (especially the mecha stuff). but then again it's kind of unfair to compare a "movie" anime with a saturday cartoon. If we were to compare 80's animes to say Heavy Metal, i'd say they were't really that far behind (even though obviously DYRL are (for me) FAR superior than anything western made at the time,for me at least). Also there's that perspective that cartoons are for kids, that made these western animated movies pretty hard to find audience for (which luckily in these modern times,the view are rather wear off, even though unluckily most of the western made ones are 3D)

80s and 90s styles had so much personality compared to today's shows. The fact so much was drawn traditionally and by hand (characters and backgrounds) only adds to it.

Yo the timing of the stage lights at 3:00 is underrated as hell and absolutely perfect Also the motion of the camera syncing with the beat of the music between 2:55 and 2:56 is just *chefs kiss*
For real, for real. The editing is superb. The visual flow of movements, the cuts/scene change per beat, the lights intensifying and changing with the beat -- they're so good. The song itself is already enough to make you feel alive, but this music video makes you feel emotions you don't understand swell up and intensify, breaking into goosebumps as soon as the song and the video reach the climax.

Sci-fi future-settings from the 80's are so interesting. They're bleak and emit this sort of, "cherishing the moment before the apocalypse"-feeling that's super charming. That's something that isn't as present in modern-day "futuristic-fiction". So whenever I come across these 80's future-settings, I can't help but fall in love with their unique environment/setting and tone.
Gabriel Rosalez its funny because i feel like perhaps that wasn’t the intention. Anime in the 80’s had limited color palettes because they were using old fashioned paints on cels instead of computers, meaning they couldn’t access the variety of colors that computer graphics can.... As a result a lot of 80’s anime have very dramatic and saturated color palettes to make up for the lack in color variety. Really makes for intense imagery

That made me cry in the best way. I can't tell you how amazing this show was. the music was so important and the emotions everyone had just imprinted on me as a kid growing up. I didn't know what the 80's were, but Macross told me all there was to know :) I hope it comes back someday. Someone cool always used to say "The carnival comes and goes, if you wait for a while, it'll always come back to you.

ROBOTECH is NOT and actual anime. but someone in the US bough the rights to a few macross seasons. but since they number of chapters of the first show didn't meet the standards they had to mesh up together several seasons into 1 with rewrite dialogs. so is a big mess compared to the original.

@@3new_tires The anime is Macross: Do You Remember Love. It's an in-universe movie so the events are very different than the original Macross series. Still fantastic to watch though. And Tenchi Muyo will always be one of my all time favourites! It's one of the few anime I actually like in both English and Japanese.
This song appeared every time Kyousuke Kasuga realised how important Ayukawa Madoka was to him. I watched all the episodes including the OVA + movies with Corona! It was sometimes hard because of Hikaru, but in the end it was a great memory that I will never forget and every time I listen to this soundtrack I remember the best moments of this series. Now i am 29 Years from germany but I envy the children who grew up with this series.

Most of the clips are from Macross: Do You Remember Love?, which was the high budget movie version of Super Dimension Fortress Macross (which older folks in the West might know as season 1 of Robotech). It was actually created by one of the guys who designed Optimus Prime, and a lot of its mecha designs would influence that of Battletech/Mech Warrior (to the point where it actually led to a lawsuit).

Hell yeah it does. To me its such a classic that since I found it in my junior year of highschool till I graduated and even to now its my favorite! When I graduated I got in my car, rolled the windows down and put this on full blast "ITS OVER! IM FREEEEEEEE!!!!" Absolute and undeniable banger indeed.

You really, REALLY, can't get anime like this anymore. The closest thing we had to an original, handrawn, anime was Redline. And that was utterly spectacular, but it nearly killed Madhouse.

Glad "Do You Remember Love?" is getting more love. Beautiful movie. It's a shame Harmony Gold hasn't been playing ball. At least now we'll get a proper North American release.
I’m hoping they do a great dub for the official release. This movie is so important in the development of modern mecha anime. Gundam started the trend in 1979, but Macross, especially the film Do You Remember Love, blew the genre up and it made mecha the best genre in anime. I love the original JP track with subs, but I would love to see them put the effort that was put into Princess Monoke’s release. That movie is one of the few anime films I actually prefer in English. There was a level of love and care put into it that you don’t see often. Cowboy Bebop’s English dub is another fantastic one, too especially Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door’s dub.
I miss when normal Japanese believed in silly ideas like achieving national greatness through absurd levels of effort and self-sacrifice. (That never really took off here in the West.) I can understand why the culture moved on - all it brought them in the end was the bursting of the bubble and the Lost Decade - but it produced some amazing artifacts. A moment in time perfectly poised between reverence for tradition and passion for the future, with piles of cash to realize the visions of a young and vigorous people - late Showa Japan!

@TheIgors20 - It's actually worse than that. In Japan, Animation, Story Writing, and Voice Acting are not centralized like here in the USA or over in Europe. Or in most anywhere else. Multiple studios can be involved to do everything at once, but few have actual power in the direction and development of what they work on. That's why you have Gundam SEED Destiny, whose characters where essentially butchered and put back together as poor imitations of what they had been prior in Gundam SEED. And why Gundam SEED seemed to forget that it was called Gundam SEED for a reason. Fortunately, they remade the series, but still... Criticism of it was well deserved. One of the most, if not The Most, infamous, being Cagalli Yula Athha's character change. Apparently, there was talk that one of the directors' had a wife who hated the character. Others in higher up positions also didn't show much consideration for her as well. So her entire character was altered and became something of a living disaster until they could correct it later on. This has also affected other works. Sometimes, some people have too much power over the work and take it in the wrong direction. I know a director who had that kind of pull, sank an entire Anime and was thus fired and blacklisted. Other developments have also happened that have not been... Popular. Yeah... SAO has that in several spades. Rather than passion for glory, there's only the usual grind of daily life and in Japan, where people overwork to the point of death being a leading cause of death in Japan... Well... It's little surprise that the few gems that come out of it, come out so well. The funny thing about Macross, was that it wasn't really developed by a professional team. A bunch of Gundam fans got together in college and formed a club they called Gunsight-One. Interestingly enough, they used their club name for Macross' combat callsign in Macross. They were rank amateurs and yet they managed to sell their idea of Macross to the right people who thought it a good enough try. And as Master Yoda says, 'Do or Do Not, There is no Try!' Macross proved so wildly and unexpectedly popular, that the series was extended by nearly double the original number of episodes and was further developed with DYRL, Flashback 2012, Macross II: Lovers Again (great OVA by the way, I liked it), Macross 7, Macross Plus, and Macross 7 additions all through the 1990s. Plus some video games and, needless to say, the spin off Robotech. Macross was essentially on haitus when it abruptly created Macross Zero and then continued development, including getting a physical attraction, Macross: The Ride, and several manga, including a reconstruction of the original TV series by one of the original creators of the series. Macross First is still being written last I heard and released, sadly, Harmony Gold and its Italian criminal owners (literally, they were convicted of crimes and suspected of more) are preventing Macross' full release in the West! Anyways... Macross is still alive and while it still has much of the touch that made it originally popular, like most developments these days, it's going against what it originally was, a Real Robot Genre with an emphasis on the Characters, surroundings, and the drive the backdrop has on them as they live through it. And yes, I'm quite passionate about Macross. And Robotech. And Gundam. And a few other series I've watched get flushed down the toilet for short term profits rather than long term existence.
@@TheUltimateCrash1990 - I never said they recovered. Gundam SEED is still deserving of the heaping helping of criticism it got. It tried to use multiple Gundam formulas and failed. Then you throw in some idiots and it was like watching a car accident and just standing there looking like an idiot yourself. As for Gundam F91, I hate to disagree there. Though while I suspect it would have been well made, the whole Newtype thing has been honestly quite crippling to Gundam UC as a whole. In addition to the highly overplayed Corrupt Federation and incompetent leadership. Given the number of disasters, you'd think people would have wised up, but nope. Gundam UC was essentially stuck in the same mode until it utterly collapsed and then we got Reconguista and I have to agree with a lot of people how THAT one turned out! Hopefully, if they do remake F91, and believe me when I say I hope they do, that not only do they follow through on the original attempt to make it a series, but they also minimize the whole Newtype thing somewhat and show the Federation in a more positive light and development. Maybe make most of the Newtype enemies more like Boss Enemies and that the Federation hasn't exactly been idle since Newtype Weapons keep appearing around every corner. Actually, I wouldn't mind if they redid all of Gundam. Giving Mobile Suits that First World War feel when they first show up. A weapon meant to break the stalemate and yet is clumsy, clunky, and so new that there are so many different issues with it. Maybe make Mobile Armor appear first and then Mobile Suits afterwards. Sort of like a Hyper Mega Tank being countered by a Tank Destroyer that it can't target because it's too damn fast and nimble? Or stick with the First World War where they first appear and are cumbersome to use due to being only just developed to break the stalemate and by a later war are more refined, but still have their role being figured out to what precisely they will do and how they would go about it. Then the point where they are now much more technologically refined, tactically understood, and how they fit in with the larger military (pun unintended) war machine. Maybe a Patlabor-style spin off too. Hmm... That would be interesting for the next Macross. Rather than an out and out intergalactic war, some sort of Policing force try to keep law and order. Space Pirates, Criminal Gangs, Mafia-like Mobs, Narco Cartels, Terrorist Groups, and even criminals using old Military Destroids, Veritechs, and Civilian and Work versions of them for crimes and terrorism. And in between, pulling some idiot who didn't obey the Air Traffic Laws and did Mach One through a No Mach Residential Zone.

A bit of context - this film is Super Dimension Fortress Macross - Do You Remember Love. Released in 1984, it had a $4MM budget ($9MM today). For any animated film this was a huge budget, which is one of the reasons it holds up so well today. It also had some huge talents, such as character designer Haruhiko Mikimoto
and disney needs over 100million to make mostly trash lol

To add a little more detail for anyone else still reading; it's a movie adaptation of the anime show Super Dimension Fortress Macross, which people of a certain age outside of Japan might better know as the first season of Robotech.
More fun facts; the creator of the Macross franchise, Shoji Kawamori, was one of the designers of Optimus Prime's original look; another anime you might know him for is The Vision of Escaflowne. Also, a good many of Macross's designs actually made their way into earlier editions of BattleTech, before they got sued into taking them out, such as the Warhammer (whose design was taken from Macross's Destroid Tomahawk).
I work at a cute Sanrio/KPop store in Washington, and we're allowed to play our own music as long as it fits the vibe of the store. I've made a playlist with dozens of different Japanese and Korean songs. Out of all the songs I play, this one always gets the whole store moving again. I usually open the shop while this is playing, since it's such a powerful sound. You can literally feel the beat through your feet when this is playing.

I’m currently in school for animation and I’ve gotta say...
The visuals of Macross is spectacular, but really thinking about it, all of the effects, drawings, and layers put into each frame must’ve been an absolute HELL.
I don’t think anyone outside of animation truly understands just how much work TRULY goes into making cartoons, and lengthy animated films. Once you understand how much blood, sweat, and tears goes into animation, you’ll appreciate it to a whole other level. The Japanese are strict, disciplined, and very hard working individuals. When it comes to animating, they’re at an entirely different level in comparison to animatiors from the States.
Karla Miracle Except maybe when Walt Disney was alive, but that’s prob about all us Americans had lmao. Japanese are truly King’s of animation.
Drawing is hard... animation is that times 5 trillion. You can draw well but you have to understand motion and timing. You can spend hours on a drawing... but when you're doing thousands upon thousands- it's harder to have as much detail. Comics can easily have so much detail because it is only one frame conveying an entire action or series of actions. The Japanese are so devoted. I am starting to get more into 80's anime. I believe cartoons at that time (and even today probably though I haven't kept up with as much of that) were superior to what we had on Saturday mornings in the U.S. though there might have still been quite a few gems. Personally I haven't seen much of U.S. 80's cartoons that I can remember right off the bat. 80's Japan and 90's as well as today display animation at probably the highest extent of what it can do. There were great animators outside Japan though like Richard Williams. Imagine if he was Japanese and/or made anime. That would make our entire dimension shake... more like all the universes.

Justin Wah .Well American Saturday morning cartoons weren’t meant to be revolutionary. Almost all of them existed as giant advertisements for the toys they’re based on. Seriously, so many 80’s American cartoons are based on toys.
Same thing with most 80's anime, most of them were made to be a toy commercial (especially the mecha stuff).
but then again it's kind of unfair to compare a "movie" anime with a saturday cartoon.
If we were to compare 80's animes to say Heavy Metal, i'd say they were't really that far behind (even though obviously DYRL are (for me) FAR superior than anything western made at the time,for me at least). Also there's that perspective that cartoons are for kids, that made these western animated movies pretty hard to find audience for (which luckily in these modern times,the view are rather wear off, even though unluckily most of the western made ones are 3D)

For real, for real. The editing is superb. The visual flow of movements, the cuts/scene change per beat, the lights intensifying and changing with the beat -- they're so good. The song itself is already enough to make you feel alive, but this music video makes you feel emotions you don't understand swell up and intensify, breaking into goosebumps as soon as the song and the video reach the climax.

Sci-fi future-settings from the 80's are so interesting.
They're bleak and emit this sort of, "cherishing the moment before the apocalypse"-feeling that's super charming.
That's something that isn't as present in modern-day "futuristic-fiction".
So whenever I come across these 80's future-settings, I can't help but fall in love with their unique environment/setting and tone.
Gabriel Rosalez its funny because i feel like perhaps that wasn’t the intention. Anime in the 80’s had limited color palettes because they were using old fashioned paints on cels instead of computers, meaning they couldn’t access the variety of colors that computer graphics can.... As a result a lot of 80’s anime have very dramatic and saturated color palettes to make up for the lack in color variety. Really makes for intense imagery

That made me cry in the best way. I can't tell you how amazing this show was. the music was so important and the emotions everyone had just imprinted on me as a kid growing up. I didn't know what the 80's were, but Macross told me all there was to know :)

ROBOTECH is NOT and actual anime. but someone in the US bough the rights to a few macross seasons. but since they number of chapters of the first show didn't meet the standards they had to mesh up together several seasons into 1 with rewrite dialogs. so is a big mess compared to the original.

The anime is Macross: Do You Remember Love. It's an in-universe movie so the events are very different than the original Macross series. Still fantastic to watch though. And Tenchi Muyo will always be one of my all time favourites! It's one of the few anime I actually like in both English and Japanese.

Most of the clips are from Macross: Do You Remember Love?, which was the high budget movie version of Super Dimension Fortress Macross (which older folks in the West might know as season 1 of Robotech). It was actually created by one of the guys who designed Optimus Prime, and a lot of its mecha designs would influence that of Battletech/Mech Warrior (to the point where it actually led to a lawsuit).

You really, REALLY, can't get anime like this anymore. The closest thing we had to an original, handrawn, anime was Redline. And that was utterly spectacular, but it nearly killed Madhouse.

I’m hoping they do a great dub for the official release.
This movie is so important in the development of modern mecha anime. Gundam started the trend in 1979, but Macross, especially the film Do You Remember Love, blew the genre up and it made mecha the best genre in anime.
I love the original JP track with subs, but I would love to see them put the effort that was put into Princess Monoke’s release. That movie is one of the few anime films I actually prefer in English. There was a level of love and care put into it that you don’t see often. Cowboy Bebop’s English dub is another fantastic one, too especially Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door’s dub.
I miss when normal Japanese believed in silly ideas like achieving national greatness through absurd levels of effort and self-sacrifice. (That never really took off here in the West.) I can understand why the culture moved on - all it brought them in the end was the bursting of the bubble and the Lost Decade - but it produced some amazing artifacts. A moment in time perfectly poised between reverence for tradition and passion for the future, with piles of cash to realize the visions of a young and vigorous people - late Showa Japan!

@TheIgors20 - It's actually worse than that. In Japan, Animation, Story Writing, and Voice Acting are not centralized like here in the USA or over in Europe. Or in most anywhere else. Multiple studios can be involved to do everything at once, but few have actual power in the direction and development of what they work on.
That's why you have Gundam SEED Destiny, whose characters where essentially butchered and put back together as poor imitations of what they had been prior in Gundam SEED.
And why Gundam SEED seemed to forget that it was called Gundam SEED for a reason.
Fortunately, they remade the series, but still... Criticism of it was well deserved.
One of the most, if not The Most, infamous, being Cagalli Yula Athha's character change. Apparently, there was talk that one of the directors' had a wife who hated the character. Others in higher up positions also didn't show much consideration for her as well. So her entire character was altered and became something of a living disaster until they could correct it later on.
This has also affected other works. Sometimes, some people have too much power over the work and take it in the wrong direction. I know a director who had that kind of pull, sank an entire Anime and was thus fired and blacklisted. Other developments have also happened that have not been... Popular.
Yeah... SAO has that in several spades.
Rather than passion for glory, there's only the usual grind of daily life and in Japan, where people overwork to the point of death being a leading cause of death in Japan... Well... It's little surprise that the few gems that come out of it, come out so well.
The funny thing about Macross, was that it wasn't really developed by a professional team. A bunch of Gundam fans got together in college and formed a club they called Gunsight-One. Interestingly enough, they used their club name for Macross' combat callsign in Macross.
They were rank amateurs and yet they managed to sell their idea of Macross to the right people who thought it a good enough try.
And as Master Yoda says, 'Do or Do Not, There is no Try!'
Macross proved so wildly and unexpectedly popular, that the series was extended by nearly double the original number of episodes and was further developed with DYRL, Flashback 2012, Macross II: Lovers Again (great OVA by the way, I liked it), Macross 7, Macross Plus, and Macross 7 additions all through the 1990s.
Plus some video games and, needless to say, the spin off Robotech.
Macross was essentially on haitus when it abruptly created Macross Zero and then continued development, including getting a physical attraction, Macross: The Ride, and several manga, including a reconstruction of the original TV series by one of the original creators of the series.
Macross First is still being written last I heard and released, sadly, Harmony Gold and its Italian criminal owners (literally, they were convicted of crimes and suspected of more) are preventing Macross' full release in the West!
Anyways... Macross is still alive and while it still has much of the touch that made it originally popular, like most developments these days, it's going against what it originally was, a Real Robot Genre with an emphasis on the Characters, surroundings, and the drive the backdrop has on them as they live through it.
And yes, I'm quite passionate about Macross. And Robotech. And Gundam. And a few other series I've watched get flushed down the toilet for short term profits rather than long term existence.

@@TheUltimateCrash1990 - I never said they recovered. Gundam SEED is still deserving of the heaping helping of criticism it got.
It tried to use multiple Gundam formulas and failed. Then you throw in some idiots and it was like watching a car accident and just standing there looking like an idiot yourself.
As for Gundam F91, I hate to disagree there. Though while I suspect it would have been well made, the whole Newtype thing has been honestly quite crippling to Gundam UC as a whole. In addition to the highly overplayed Corrupt Federation and incompetent leadership.
Given the number of disasters, you'd think people would have wised up, but nope. Gundam UC was essentially stuck in the same mode until it utterly collapsed and then we got Reconguista and I have to agree with a lot of people how THAT one turned out!
Hopefully, if they do remake F91, and believe me when I say I hope they do, that not only do they follow through on the original attempt to make it a series, but they also minimize the whole Newtype thing somewhat and show the Federation in a more positive light and development.
Maybe make most of the Newtype enemies more like Boss Enemies and that the Federation hasn't exactly been idle since Newtype Weapons keep appearing around every corner.
Actually, I wouldn't mind if they redid all of Gundam.
Giving Mobile Suits that First World War feel when they first show up.
A weapon meant to break the stalemate and yet is clumsy, clunky, and so new that there are so many different issues with it.
Maybe make Mobile Armor appear first and then Mobile Suits afterwards.
Sort of like a Hyper Mega Tank being countered by a Tank Destroyer that it can't target because it's too damn fast and nimble?
Or stick with the First World War where they first appear and are cumbersome to use due to being only just developed to break the stalemate and by a later war are more refined, but still have their role being figured out to what precisely they will do and how they would go about it.
Then the point where they are now much more technologically refined, tactically understood, and how they fit in with the larger military (pun unintended) war machine.
Maybe a Patlabor-style spin off too.
Hmm... That would be interesting for the next Macross.
Rather than an out and out intergalactic war, some sort of Policing force try to keep law and order.
Space Pirates, Criminal Gangs, Mafia-like Mobs, Narco Cartels, Terrorist Groups, and even criminals using old Military Destroids, Veritechs, and Civilian and Work versions of them for crimes and terrorism.
And in between, pulling some idiot who didn't obey the Air Traffic Laws and did Mach One through a No Mach Residential Zone.
I still the VHS of this series!! Damn the memories!!
