You should read Xenophon’s “Anabasis”. It’s what the Warriors was based on. Those Greek Hoplites had to Bop their way through one fierce tribal area after another to get back home. You can listen to the audio on TH-cam.
Even though I wasn’t born in the 70’s, I admire the ambition driven to produce these masterpieces throughout that decade. And continues to hold relevancy up to this day!!!
One of the best movies ever made. Simply an outstanding work of art. On the level of alien, aliens and blade runner. Everything from the cinematography, costumes, concept, action, acting, casting, and moody, depressing atmosphere. And especially the score of the soundtrack. Even the ambient background pop rock bands chosen to give the scenes the omnipresent realism and authentic feel of the time. It's an insurmountable piece that is for me a must watch every now and then. Seeing it in the right mood puts me on the edge of my seat like predator. Never disappoints. Absolute classic 👍
The amount of kids walking around in 1983 in Brooklyn chanting "Warriors, come out to play-ay-yee!" is something I'll never forget 😂! I was 5 years old, and I had no clue what it meant but seeing all of the older tough kids in my projects saying it scared the hell out of me!
I was in Thomas Waites acting class in New York City for three years, and I can tell you firsthand he’s helped me grow not only as a performer, but as a person as well. He loves to tell stories about being on sets, he looks upon them fondly despite some unfortunate circumstances, he has a genuine love for the stage and screen. He admits that he made mistakes in his youth, some due to his struggles with alcohol, but his experiences have given him wisdom which he’s passed onto his students for three decades. He continues to be a mentor for me today, I’ve learned more from him than I did in 12 years of public school. I can not recommend his class enough. A great actor and an even greater human.
We saw this at the theater in '79, it was easily one of our favorites, and to this day we still occasionally quote the line at the end of the movie when the main bad guy taunts the Warriors to 'come out and play'. Movie has certainly aged, but still very good.
Classic! I loved this movie! Having grown up in the NYC, I knew every bit of the areas that were shot, so it was such a viscerally moving movie for me. Also, I grew up in the time period. I remember them pulling the movie from certain cinemas because of gang fights breaking out. Thanks for the memories!
One of the best movies ever made. The locations, fight scenes, wardrobe, etc. It all came together with the realistic fine acting of a group of young actors that with their dedication, they put together a memorable project. It's hard to imagine that there were so many issues and challenges that had to be overcome to make this movie. An absolute classic! I always like to imagine The Warriors takes place in the same universe as A Clockwork Orange. The ads for The Warriors were quickly taken down off of NYC's public transportation because of the amount of complaints. Imagine you're on the subway at 2 am in New York City in the late 70s after a long day's work and you get paid cash so you've got your entire week's salary, then you look at a poster with a huge group of threatening gangmembers staring back at you with the tagline, "These are the Armies of the Night. They are 100,000 strong. They outnumber the cops five to one. They could run New York City." From what I've been told of New York City during the 70s, it wasn't just "The City That Never Sleeps," it was "The City That Never RELAXES."

In the early 1980s my friends and I rented this movie on VHS so many times and we would usually rent The Wanderers too, to watch them together. Happy days.
One of the most quotable movies ever made. Here are some of my favorite quotes: Rembrandt: The chicks are packed! The chicks are packed! Vermin: Those were some desperate dudes. Cowboy: So was we. Ajax: I'll shove that bat up your a$$ & turn you into a popsicle. Swan: Everybody packin'? Cochise: Yeah. Swan: When we see the ocean, we figure we're home, we're safe. Why'd you do it? Why'd you waste Cyrus? Luther: No reason. I like doing things like that. Masai: You Warriors are good. Real good. Swan: The best.
Every line that the new Riffs warlord says is epic, especially his first address to the Riffs: "Who are the Warriors? There must be some word. I want all the Warriors. Alive, if possible, if not, wasted! Send the word!"
Dude. I grew on on this movie, and films like it...thabk you for bringing this to the forefront. Have you done Streets of Fire yet? I'll have to check... And David Patrick Kelly is one of the most under appreciated villains of the 80s. His turn as the insanely villainous bad guy in Dreamscape stays with you.
I first seen the movie in the early eighties. At the time I hung out with quite a few other teenagers , all from broken homes . Watching this movie was mandatory if you were in a "gang" in the eighties. I think some part of me said this is what family is , those who choose to stand with you no matter what. The come out and play line will always give me goosbumps
I'm stoked that I got to see this when it first came out! I was in High School, on the baseball team and we were blown away by the reality it portrayed, with all the hidden confrontations and the masterfully coordinated violence...not going too far, but being ugly and aggressive enough to make us understand how these type of people existed. I wish the producers would've given more working cash to the directors!
I'm 22. I watched this movie when I was around 7 years old. I've watched a lot of movies but this movie has got to be one of my favourites. I played the ps2 game too, which me and my brother loved. Crazy how when I bring up the warriors, 80% have never heard of it.
D.P. Kelly came up with the iconic line from when he was a kid the neighborhood bully chased him home and stood in front of his house chanting “ come out and play “
This movie definitely pulled me in the first time I watched it, and I think a lot of it was for the same reason I enjoyed the first John Wick film: both of them allude to a world greater than what is depicted in the films.
I might be wrong, but I always felt like this movie was the inspiration for a LOT of video games. Plenty of old 80's titles that feature fighting through gang territories where each stage has it's own unique flavor and new enemies.
Rockstar who became famous because of their legendary crime series of games GTA made the greatest movie game ever and that was of course called The Warriors and was released on the original Xbox and PlayStation 2 and the PlayStation PSP,it’s also been made available for PlayStation 4 as well as the Xbox 360..if you haven’t played it i can not recommend enough..when it comes to movie games check out Scarface: The World Is Yours which follows on the story with Tony getting the guy who killed him before he has the chance and another that i personally love is Reservoir Dogs which plays the heist that we don’t get to see in the movie
This movie is awesome. Then and now. My dad gave me an old vest from his suits for work. Picture this! A huge fan of Dukes of Hazzard. I'm wearing my vest jumping home made ramps on my bike. I'm trying to sound like the General Lee. I did some weird stuff as a kid. But I had a blast.
I remember watching this film as a small kid, and that moment when David Patrick Kelly is taunting them to "come out and play" with those bottles...that stick in my mind... he is a musician and maybe that is how he got the idea to use those bottles, and his face is such, that scene has particular quality...
Yeah, the whole overblown comic aspect killed it for me. "Let's make a gritty movie about a running street battle between youth gangs." "Yeah, yeah, and there will be mimes and Bond villain and..." Sigh. Hollywood. I wonder what those peoples' lives are like that they keep doing this.
The game was definitely awesome. I played (and completed) it on all three levels. (It was three, right? Easy, medium, and difficult?) Getting to interact with all the different gangs that are (mostly) only briefly seen in the film was one of the best aspects of the game. Plus getting more insight of the Warriors' history was great.
@@skyden24195 yeah the prequel how they all joined and leading up to and going through thr actual movie was epic. Pretty sure it was like soldier, bopper and hardcore. Loved playing on harder difficulties. Then you had the bonus 2d side scrolling armies of the night game that was epic as well
Director Walter Hill directed “The Warriors,” and he directed “48 Hrs”. Albert Ganz is a character in the 1982 film 48 Hrs. He is portrayed by James Remar, who also played Ajax in the cult film The Warriors. David Patrick Kelly portrayed the character "Luther" in the Warrior, and he was "Luther" again in "48 Hours".
My older brother came home from the theater and began to reenact the movie. He stood up on a chair, screaming can you dig it!! He said that phrase for years. Instant classic.

The fact that in spite of many rumors of a remake, and hasn't happened yet, is a blessing.

Every line that the new Riffs warlord says is epic, especially his first address to the Riffs:
"Who are the Warriors?
WARRIORS COME OUT TO PLAYYYYYY....
They spoofed the plot in an episode of The Simpsons. It was awesome and hilarious.
Excellent background info. Great work 👌🏽
I'm 22. I watched this movie when I was around 7 years old. I've watched a lot of movies but this movie has got to be one of my favourites. I played the ps2 game too, which me and my brother loved. Crazy how when I bring up the warriors, 80% have never heard of it.
21 years before my birth. One of the best movies Ive seen and games I've played. God bless.
Awesome. My friends and I were 17 when it hit VCR video. I watched it many times after!
This was a awesome movie and your video made it so much better
Great reaction, thank you for all the info! No remake, please!!!!! The Warriors needs no remake!
D.P. Kelly came up with the iconic line from when he was a kid the neighborhood bully chased him home and stood in front of his house chanting “ come out and play “
It was an annoying neighbor of his as an adult. And it was the tone, not the line itself.
a masterpiece classic 🔥
This movie definitely pulled me in the first time I watched it, and I think a lot of it was for the same reason I enjoyed the first John Wick film: both of them allude to a world greater than what is depicted in the films.
This movie would have been completely different for me , if they had not capped it off with The Eagle's ,"In The City". That ending was movie history.
Props to all the cast and crew ! They went through a lot to get the movie done!
Love this film, and played the game for days and days when it came out on the ps2. One of my favourite ever ps2 games
Awesome video! What is the name of the background song that starts at 00:59?
Easily a top-10 movie. I believe It came out when I was 13. Great job by all involved.! Every time it's on I watch it. Masterpiece!!!
I might be wrong, but I always felt like this movie was the inspiration for a LOT of video games. Plenty of old 80's titles that feature fighting through gang territories where each stage has it's own unique flavor and new enemies.
Totally, the guy who developed the arcade games Renegade and Double Dragon said it was a big influence.
@@metalcali680 Those were the first two games I thought of, too lol 😂
The Warriors is a complete classic!
They better not remake this masterpiece! It is perfect as it is!
Great informative video.
Great Bio - Doc about one of my all time favorite movies. Thanks for your research about it 👍👍
I remember when Boyz in the Hood and Colors was released they were worried about gang fights in the theater. Lol. The Warriors was first.
It became one of the best beat ‘em ups ever made! The rockstar game is easily my favorite co op game and expanded the lore and depth of the movie
Then you had the bonus 2d side scrolling armies of the night game that was epic as well
Guess it's about time I played it then, I'm in the need for some more grounded beat em ups.
@@Crowens it’s an awesome game. You can play it on ps2, psp, ps4 and OG Xbox
@@sharebear421 I'm just gonna emulate it, glad to see it's available on PS4 though.
Thank you Joe Bob Briggs from sharing this film on Drive in theater late one Saturday night. Amazing film! In the City…. Great song
A classic. Recently shared this one with my son.
This is one of the best movies of all time, I dont care what anyone says.
Saw this movie for the first time when I was 10, immediately got the game for PS2, and have been a massive fan since.
