The way Courtney ends this performance with the oscillation of screaming and singing "this could all be yours" is so much more powerful and passionate than the studio track. It literally gives me goosebumps every time. Also, I love how Courtney approaches the mic like she's about to friggin' attack it.
Same! I keep coming back to this version because it's just hits differently. There's a shadow of that scream in the album version, but you have to strain for it, rather than relax into it.
Watching Elizabeth slowly become a metalhead and go from "Harsh vocals aren't my cup of tea, but I appreciate the skill and technique." to "Hell yeah, I love harsh vocals and get pumped every time I hear them in a song now!" has got to be my favourite character arc
It's honestly my favorite thing seeing people like this appreciate art they weren't a huge fan of before only to see them get really excited whenever they see that specific art. It's beautiful when someone who loves what they do can appreciate (and eventually become a fan in this instance) the work that goes into the art, even if it's not their cup of tea.
Elizabeth is the better person to watch reacting to metal songs, because she was able to put her music taste aside to understand what a metal singer needs to make those sounds so well she became a metal head step by step. Sorry for my English and greetings from Brazil.
You know what, I completely agree! I thought the song was OK when it was released, far from one of their best. But then when she dropped this performance I fell in love! This take shits all over the album version to the point where it seems like a different far better song lol it's one of my favorite now.
Ahhh I've been waiting for this reaction for so long!! All I want in life is someone who looks at me like Elizabeth looks at Courtney between 26:10 and 26:28.😂 This passion is why I love this channel
I'm so surprised at how little Spiritbox you've covered, and so excited to see you do more! This version is absolutely brilliant, and I'm so excited to see what you think.
I've seen them live a week ago in Amsterdam as a support act for Architects. The band was even better live then I expected, Courtney is a (lovely) beast!
5:32 lol the way your eyes light up when you discussed the opportunity to get more cameras down people’s throats was pretty funny. I admire the passion you have for the science behind vocals.
YESSS. All the goosebumps. Courtney’s vocals are perfection. And Mike deserves more love because the music he writes is phenomenal. The variety in their music while keeping their sound consistent is supreme.
@@snowflake4656 Mike literally writes all of the songs. I don’t know how much more integral one needs to be to be considered as life of the band. Courtney 1000% deserves all of the credit and praise, if not more, she receives. She gets most of the attention because she’s a woman in a male dominated genre doing it better than most of the men in the genre. That doesn’t and shouldn’t minimize Mikes contribution to an incredibly diverse catalog of songs that make the band as a whole stand out beyond having Courtney dominating in her position. They are both key to the success of Spiritbox. I feel like labeling Mike as “average” is just wrong.
Regarding the "how does being sick affect vocals, and does it affect extreme vocals or clean vocals more" question I actually have a super cool piece of anecdotal information about this. Ben Duerr is the vocalist for the Deathcore/Melodeath band Shadow Of Intent. He performed extremely complex difficult screaming sets while sick with a lost voice. (He's probably the best extreme vocalist you haven't reacted to on the channel yet). He's a bit of a legend in the deathcore community because they started as a studio only band for their first two albums, when they ended up going on their first live tour Ben got really sick and completely lost his voice. Like he couldn't do interviews or anything because he couldn't even talk. But he is a legend in the scene because he went out and ripped his entire set every night with his screaming, all the other metal vocalists that were on the tour talk about it, and say how insane it was that Ben literally couldn't talk but still screamed his set almost perfectly every night. He is friends with Will and Lorna, and also lurks/posts on the r/deathcore subreddit often, so if you wanted to ask/interview him about it I bet you could! (Also you should react to "The Migrant" by Shadow of Intent. )
Easily one of my favorite female vocalists. Courtney's technique is incredible, and she has the voice of an angel. She has inspired me to learn how to scream!
Wow, I got the chills at "I held the power of a dying sun". So good and it sounds "raw" in a good way, damn! I've suggested this song a couple of times so I'm happy to see your reaction. I love the ending with the pitched screams.
I am now sitting here in utter anticipation of you announcing a teatime interview with Courtney. You have to do more songs from Spiritbox before then, but seriously, you would need to do a teatime interview.
The way she transitions is pure perfection, especially at the end of the video. She's top tier . Ultraviolet is my new favorite, so versatile, It's ridiculous
This is the first time I'm watching Courtney's one take of Circle With Me. Holy hell such a huge difference between this and the official music video. Also how crazy excited you get! Love it.
This exact one-take of "circle with me" by courtney was what got me hooked with Spiritbox over a year and a half ago - great choice, can't wait to hear your professional opinion on this masterpiece of a performance!
Elizabeth, this was a delight! Your excitement and knowledge is so fun to hear, and the way you broke down and discussed some of the tangential knowledge around the techniques here was just pure joy. Thanks so much for covering it, and sharing!
Courtney is by far my favorite vocalist next to Howard Jones from killswitch engage. You should listen to some of Courtney’s newest stuff. Cellar door especially. I would definitely watch a tea time with her if you did one.
I’ve listened to this so many times I honestly thought it had already been reviewed on this channel. It’s long overdue! She really needs to hear “Constance” though. That’s the one that really makes me love Courtney.
Between Courtney’s amazing performance and Elizabeth’s pure joy and fascination with the voice I think I’ve watched this 10 times. The way she says “brilliant” near the end is true love for voice dynamics.
Listening to the song actually brought tears to my eyes. The depth and weight of the emotions that she brings is just beyond on point. Thank you for bringing all of us this. The more I watch your channel the more I learn about music and a singer inflection of emotion that they impart upon us the viewers and fans. Keep up the awesome work
I’m glad you reviewed this. I have watched this one take SO many times. I love the back and forth clean and screams at the end so much. It has always blown my mind.
I cannot express how excited I am for this. I have watched this hundreds of times. I have not taken my spiritbox box cd out of my truck since it released. A cd for anyone that doesn’t know is..
I was late to the party and discovered Spiritbox last year with this song. I instantly fell in love with her voice. I was blown away. She is absolutely incredible.
Elizabeth is becoming a metalhead at heart and I am all for it! One of the best feelings as a metalhead is when someone else begins to understand why metal music is so damn good
I've been waiting for quite a while for you to review this version of Courney's vocals. The ending is so epic and different from what was released. The flip from harsh to clean instantly is so impressive, powerful and passionate that it makes me smile with a little bit of tears in my eyes. Your enthusiasm and expressions are awesome. Keep listening to all these incredible bands and providing your professional expertise.
Courtney is amazing, and the rest of the band is right there with her. They are just an incredible group. The music and the vocals always seem to reflect each other. Thank you for taking the time to go through this in such detail.
I was beaming when I saw how excited you got at the end when she was seamlessly transitioning between screams and cleans. Because I knew it was coming and just how impressive and euphonious it is!
Geez, the way I listen to metal music will never be the same again. Your breakdowns and explanations give a deeper dimension that I never noticed before. This is so enlightening. You are awesome!
That live performance was one of my most watched videos last year, so good. Wonder if you'd ever make an " opera singer tries harsh vocals for the first time" video.
Never knew about Spiritbox until I saw them at their first show on their first US tour at Louder Than Life in 2021. Immediately fell in love with this band! They totally should have won a Grammy, hands down.
Not only do I love her singing... But her energy in general is AMAZING. I love how she approaches (AND departs) the microphone like a total BADASS. She even starts to bob back and forth like she's a character from a Street Fighter game and the round is about to begin! 😁
You should really check out “the Mara effect live at silverside sound “, I think it’s their best work and it happens to be also a live take. Great reaction/analysis!
I’m so happy you get to experience her voice as we do! This band is incredibly talented all the way around And I think they’re going to keep changing the world of metal
You need to do anything from Thursday! Vocals are so unique and beautiful. Id start with understanding in a car crash, but listen to more please. You'd make a great video on them. Saw them live 3 times and they were amazing
This song means a lot to me, and this live performance really encapsulates that oceanic intensity that Spiritbox has become know for. Thank you for the deep dive
So glad you returned to Spiritbox, Courtney is a powerhouse! One song I can't get enough of recently is Illumishade - Enemy, they deserve more exposure because their music and vocals are something to behold.
Your commentary around 27:45 about how intermingling harsh vocals adds this extra layer of expression that isnt possible with just clean singing is exactly how I feel. So happy to see how your appreciation for harsh vocals has developped! They definitely raise the bar for how much intensity and emotion can be expressed in music.
This is such an incredible performance, especially those final lines, made even more impressive by the fact that she was sick when she recorded this video.
I have been waiting for this reaction for a really long time now. So thx for finnaly doing it. And yes, Tea time with Courtney will be really interedting to see.
They shouldve won the Grammy. Metallica is my favorite band, but Id rather see a new band get it. The Grammys doesnt understand metal, and constantly snubbs it.
Can I just say I not only appreciate the way you get excited over the songs I move, but you give technical explanations that scratches this specific curiosity itch in my brain. Thank you for these videos!
Really is such an amazing performance! Always blown away when I listen to her. I would LOVE to see you react to Ado! Her vocal control and range are ridiculous. I've watched hundreds of reactions to her songs and everyone is blown away. I'd recommend the live version of either Unravel or Show!
I could have sworn every big vocal expert channel had already covered this video. Well, what a nice surprise. Thanks for giving me another video to get through the day, Elizabeth!
I was just looking up reactions to this song for the first time today and was wishing you had one... I swear this is like the 5th time you've read my mind and uploaded right after I thought of something lol
Please do a video for OTEP's Blood Pig. She was my first experience of a woman doing harsh vocals in the same style as the guys in metal (i.e. Slipknot, Korn, etc...). Her lyrics and emotional message are so brutal and impactful, I really think it's worth you checking out.
This one take by Courtney.... every time I watch it I get shivers down my spine. And I am very cerebral person and hard to impress. I have never encountered anything else in 45 years of existence that had me getting shivers almost every time. Before Courtney, "shivers down the spine" was only an expression in my mind and not something that you could experience for real.
Elizabeth, that moment when Courtney growls and you felt that power I noticed your voice tremble a bit, you nearly teared up. Isn't this kind of moment or power in music just the most amazing thing ever? Dio's "My eyes are bleeding!" at the end of Stargazer does that to me every single bloody time. I find that rock and metal music is just filled with moments like these.
The amount of times I've rewatched the ending of this track too!! So impressive, the way Courtney switches from clean to scream, it works so well. This one take is ultimately better than the studio version hands down. I really wish Spiritbox would add the one-take versions to Spotify.
My goodness you enjoyed that so much. I had a smile the whole time watching your reactions. Thanks for this. Great analysis, and so fun to watch you watch it.
I can say this calmly: Courtney is one of the best vocalists in the world today, regardless of the musical genre. And Spiritbox is the best metal band of the new generation. Liz, review "Rotoscope," it's amazing.
This song came on my radar and I thought it was two singers and didn't think much of it. Then watched this video and cried my eyes out at the end. If you have perfected your craft so much as this, it's incredible. Had the pleasure of meeting her after the gig last summer and she is SO SO nice, humble, 100% herself and breaking the metal game. Not just for woman, for everyone.
You have quickly become my favorite TH-camr! Love that you will listen to ALL music. I really love the breakdowns of how they are creating certain sounds. Also love your friendship with will ramos! You’re an incredible talent! I used to listen to all true crime all the time. And then I found you 😅😅😅 Edit; Courtney gives me chills
You have to check out live performance by Andy Cizek of Monuments. There are a lot of one-takes and also some short form covers that he's done on his own channel. Phenominal vocalist with exceptional range.
She should check out the live version where Tatiana from jinger joins them on stage and sings along. It’s even better than the recorded version and you can see the comparison between two of today’s best female singers
"I would like to see WAY more cameras down people's throats.... And I'm working on that!" -Elizabeth 2024 100% does not sound like a threat. On another note: As someone who's been a fan of your videos for over a year and a half at this point- I found spiritbox through your reactions of them a few months back and have developed an obsession with their music (which I may or may not have harassed my brother into as well) if you're looking for more spiritbox to react to I'd highly recommend their performance of "Blessed Be" for liquid metal; it's a band performance so the camera isn't on Courtney's vocals the whole time but it's still live and I believe her performance clearly demonstrates her insane vocal range as well as ability to transition between the most beautiful cleans and brutally gorgeous harshes and her innate skill to be able to pull off such flawless live performance as she does!
Will never get tired of this version of the song. It's simply epic. Courtney kicks butt in all the best ways. Sirens song indeed. Will never get tired of Liz geeking out to epic songs like this either... The sheer joy is amazing.
i love seeing you be so pumped over her talent, i can certainly relate! i just found out today she also does the screaming in their songs and was shocked. i've only listened to them on spotify and always assumed they had a different (male) vocalist doing the screaming parts. learning its all courtney has made me fall even deeper in love with her. loved this video!
I love seeing your analysis of heavier tracks. Please, please, please, consider listening to Invent Animate, especially Heavener, Sleepless Deathbed, or Without a Whisper. The vocals on these tracks are unreal, and the emotion behind them is something else. I promise you won't regret checking them out
Love Courtney LaPlante! I can feel the emotion everytime I see this video or listen to the track. Sooooo cool you finally analyzed this one! Tea time for sure!! Peace.
This video has finally gotten me to fully check out Spiritbox. I have heard them a number of times but not fully checked them out. New band to get into! Thankyou!
There are a lot of great singers that i can get down to, but Courtney is one of the very few who speaks to my soul. My soul lights up to her voice. Amazing.
Now I really hope you will invite Courtney for a tea time interview!
I second this!
This must happen

Between this and Bad Omens' V.A.N., we need more live adaptations being re-recorded in-studio
I love her live/one take vocals so much more than her studio. It just sounds better. The liquid metal performance is still one of my go tos
i actually strongly prefer the album version, but thats taste for you haha. this is still amazing though. rule of nines one take blows me away too

This is the greatest vocal performance of all time. Tears of joy at the end for me every single time.
Who here has been listening to Courtney since Iwrestledabearonce?
Iwabo, do you wabo?
Since unicron
I've been waiting for this reaction since they dropped this video !
THIS right here is why they DESWERVED the Grammy....Metallicas song sounded like many other things theyve done for 40 years
The amount of times I've rewatched the ending of this track too!! So impressive, the way Courtney switches from clean to scream, it works so well.
This one take is ultimately better than the studio version hands down. I really wish Spiritbox would add the one-take versions to Spotify.
I couldn't help but think "why yes I do have a potty mouth" when Elizabeth talks about having your own personal bathroom with good acoustics. 😅
I love how when watching Elizabeth her facial expression reflects all the gears turning in her brain its amazing thankyou for making videos.
Please analyze "My Love For Evermore" by The Hillbilly Moon Explosion!!
I’d love to see her react to Old Gods of Asgard
She already reacted to Carnival of rust, but i agree that hearing her take on "The poet and the Muse" would be incredible.
You have quickly become my favorite TH-camr! Love that you will listen to ALL music. I really love the breakdowns of how they are creating certain sounds. Also love your friendship with will ramos! You’re an incredible talent! I used to listen to all true crime all the time. And then I found you 😅😅😅
Edit; Courtney gives me chills
You have to check out live performance by Andy Cizek of Monuments. There are a lot of one-takes and also some short form covers that he's done on his own channel. Phenominal vocalist with exceptional range.
She should check out the live version where Tatiana from jinger joins them on stage and sings along. It’s even better than the recorded version and you can see the comparison between two of today’s best female singers
"I would like to see WAY more cameras down people's throats.... And I'm working on that!" -Elizabeth 2024
100% does not sound like a threat.
I loved watching your reaction to her performance. It's so amazing, so inspiring. This is probably my favorite one-shot.
My mouth is a bathroom. 😂
That’s one way to call me a potty mouth
Absolutely LOVE that you covered Courtney and you're reactions are so genuine. Another well done video.
they got robbed. Courtney and co. definitely should have won the Grammy
VOLBEAT!!! When will we ever get some VOLBEAT in here?????
I second that!!
Honestly love your reaction videos - helps me appreciate details in the music more
Will never get tired of this version of the song.
I promise you won't regret checking them out
Amazing reaction Elizabeth. Courtney is my favorite female vocalist of all time, her voice is mesmerizing and soulful. 🥰🤘
I am soooo stoked to see Spiritbox on here!!! Love the channel and Spiritbox is my absolute fav!
Amazing.
I have been waiting for this!! yessss Courtney is unbelievable and this is my favorite performance of hers.
That" WhaOooooo" that equaled mind blown was awesome .
I'm so glad you did this! Courtney has great vocals and they are awesome live!
