  • For years now, Coheed and Cambria has been on the top 5 patron poll options fairly consistently, but never won the poll? Winners like The Who, Alice In Chains, Fleetwood Mac, AC/DC, etc. always took the top prize. But sometimes, I have to feed that monster - that being our lovely patrons that have been pushing so long without a payoff. So, here we are with the first time I've ever heard Coheed and Cambria!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Coheed and Cambria for the first time, performing "In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth pt. 3” Live!

They have a lot of good songs that can be listened to as singles, but they are kind of a "listen to the whole album" kind of band for the full experience.
A pretty accessible starting point for them is the album "Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Volume One: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness", but the album this song came from is also a good one. They are still making good albums, although I am less familiar with their newer stuff.

Definitely need an album cut for analysis. Coheed may be proggy but it's like emo/post-punk prog, and their live shows are appropriately chaotic. Live performances are expected to be all over the place and out of tune. This band gets super precise and pretty when they get in the studio

I suggest checking out "A Favor House Atlantic" to get an idea of how comfortable he is in a high register. These guys are my all time favorite; Claudio Sanchez is an absolute legend and a huge inspiration for me. You wont be disappointed by diving into their music. Even though there is a fictional story behind most of their songs the lyrics still have lots of relatability and realism. Claudio has often said the songs start from a very real place and then he morphs them into fiction. All the other guys are great too and really bring the songs to life. Truly an awesome one of a kind band.

IKSSE:3 and GA1 are considered their best by some. Some will say Aftermans. Color Before the Sun is considered to be worst by most.
She kinda touched base on it in the video but Claudio has written a whole universe that corresponds with the songs. Mostly in comics, but there's a novel and some smaller literature pieces. SSTB through NWFT go over the main story. Black Rainbow is the prequel to that. Afterman is the prequel to everything pretty much. It's hard to explain. Then Vaxis saga is YEARS AND YEARS after No World. Color Before the Sun isn't part of the concept cause the band was dealing with some stuff and just wanted to express their emotions without the veil of the concept.
THEN Claudio has a side project called Prize Fighter Inferno that deals with a major side character in story.
Theres a lot there. If you're looking for a good group, look up Cobalt and Calcium on Facebook thats the officially unofficial fan group.

For what it's worth, Claudio (lead vocals) has gotten *drastically* better as the years have gone on. This is a very early recording as he's still learning to carry himself live. I've seen them since 2003 every tour and he just gets tighter and more consistent every pass. This is a very rough demonstration of what he's capable of.
Also, thank you for starting with one of my absolute favorite Co&Ca songs. You really tapped into some of the crying desperation in his tone that is so important to the song. Listen to their album work or more modern live performances if you really want to understand how he works his voice. This song, I still believe, is one of the best opening tracks of the modern era for their genre(s).

Honestly, I'm surprised every time when I hear you talk about how someone sounds, and all the language that comes with it. I never took any voice lessons, so I never had the terms in my knowledge, but they make perfect sense when you also visually show us. And while I still couldn't describe someone's voice who is new to me using those terms on my own, I understand what you describe 100% for these videos, it really activates my mental visualization for it. It's just really cool that that is how voices can be described, especially when you talked about having resonance or a dome, or a forward, pressed voice etc.

Omg, like, I just can't say enough. Coheed deserves so much more acclaim than they get. Claudio is masterful, the entire group are musical geniuses.
Did you know their music tells the story of their comic? It's like a soundtrack for the narrative. I will never get over how complex their artistry is.
Coheed has played such an important role in the evolution of my understanding and appreciation for musical expression.
Every song is a whirlwind of emotion, exploring the depths of the soul, of what it means to be human. Concepts relating to psychology, faith, suffering, conflict, hope, and so much more.

Not only do I love that you picked this particular song; I love that you picked a live version of it. And probably the best live version on TH-cam. That ending part is simply magical and one of the best things I've ever witnessed in person.
If I may, I'd recommend The Light & The Glass from this same exact show to get the full Claudio experience. Just a musician and his guitar playing (at the time) a brand new song by himself. It is extraordinary.

This song is such a rollercoaster of emotion because it is about a battle and its great that you got to experience it for the first time! Wish I could go back and feel that feeling again and again! You know what, hearing you describe it gave me a new way to understand it and was almost like the first time!

The lead singer has another project called The Prize Fighter Inferno.
That project and this band are both tied into his series The Amory Wars. Their album titles are usually the titles of each Amory Wars volume.
It's a pretty neat thing he's done. Dude's also just a chill, nice guy.
EDIT: Claudio's vocal range is pretty insane. Especially in songs like 'A Favor House Atlantic' and 'Blood Red Summer'.

C&C albums should all be listened to in their entirety and really in one sitting. The concerts are not just a greatest hits list, and they truly play the albums from start to finish. When I was a teen, I listened to Blink 182, Lincoln Park and more commercial music. It was once I hit senior year in high school that I heard Delirium Trigger and I have been hooked ever since. Forever expanded my ideas of what music could be.

They are such musical perfectionists. Saw them in 2003 when this album came out at the Newport in Columbus Ohio. They melted everyones faces off for well.over an hour and the last song, they got a few stanzas in and Claudio just stopped mid song and started saying damn guys Im so sorry. I messed up a bit back there and it has been just such a perfect show I didnt want to end on that note. They then started back at the beginning and rocked it. Nobody woulsve known he messed up but they love their fans so much and want to give us our money's worth. Forever fan after that night.

I 100% agree! He's always been solid but ever since the Afterman albums he's done nothing but get better and better. His voice is phenomenal now. One of the few vocalists who get better with age. Id put him in the same category as Devin Townsend with how good he is now and how he just gets better and better. I'd LOVE to hear her thoughts on Window of the Waking Mind. He uses a lot of voices on that song. And it seems up her alley with how theatrical it is.

Please do more post-hardcore and Emo bands. So glad you're finally getting to Coheed! This video and song is great, but if you'd like something more recent to follow up with I have a few recommendations:
The Dark Sentencer (Live) - Official live performance of another excellent progressive song meant as the intro to one of their recent album "The Unheavenly Creatures"
Domino The Destitute (Official Music Video) - Another prog banger, whose official music video really shows off the story behind the song.
The Pavilion (A Long Way Back) - a shorter and less intense song, and a great performance from Claudio.
Thanks for everything you do! Love the content. 😃
