    4:24 I liked how Sony handled the PS2 media. At launch, due to a lack of newer DVD pressing factories, DVDs cost a bit more than CD media, so they only used DVD-ROMs for games that absolutely required the extra data. I.E. ICO was on a CD, while Twisted Metal Black used a 4.7GB DVD, and God of War was launched on a Dual Layer 8.5GB DVD.

    • @crazedlunatic43

      @teezee44 The PS2 was also more notoriously difficult to program games for, and the main reason why programmers stuck around was because of it’s impressive install base at the time. If it hadn’t been for the impressive install base it generated, it wouldn’t get as much support because let’s face it, no programmer is willing to torture themselves with such convoluted hardware that was programmer unfriendly.

    The Cube was weird throughout it's lifecycle. I had one and so did some of my friends, but even though we played it a lot we didn't really even notice. Like when friends were over we'd play Kart, Smash or Soulcalibur. One day I asked a friend if he was playing a ton of Cube? We both thought about it and started rattling off titles. Rogue, Eternal Darkness, RE4, Windwaker, Luigi's Mansion, etc. Anyways you get the point, the library is loaded and we beat most AAA titles. Despite that we didn't even realize how great the system was or even how much we were using it until we reflected on it. The whole Cube era was really odd.

    I know it's easy to laugh at now, but the PS2 diubling as a DVD player really did help it push numbers. I distinctly remember being given the choice between getting a PS2 or a GameCube, and I chose a PS2 with that being one of the major reasons. No you didn't. Everyone wants to dismiss that GTA 3 was worldwide massive! Halo was on the rise, and everyone just wrote off the GameCube. It was for babies. The DVD player was a bonus but nobody bought it for that as DVDs had just barely come out, and the medium had barely even a footing. Wal marts and fye and music movie stores, barely had 20 DVDs in a tiny section. My local music store,In a mall, was huge, and the DVD section probably had like 30 or 40 DVDs. My first DVDs I bought where Jay n silent bob strike back, Godsmack live, scary movie 2, and disturbed documentary/live. But now GameCube is all the sudden loved by everyone, but In it's day nobody gave. Single fuck whatsoever. It was for babies. I got made fun of for buying a GameCube. Those same ppl now want you to be impressed that they bought all the Mario party games yet aren't Gunna play em. It's ridiculous and I hate the way history has been rewritten. GameCube was the lamest POS in just about every gamers eyes. No system since has been so uncared about as the GameCube was at the time. Nobody cares and now everyone acts like they where there at the time drooling over it and supporting it. History shows that ppl wrote it off until 15 years later

    Haven't spoken to 98% of them in 21 years. Those ps2 and Xbox owners took fanboy-ism to the extreme back then.
    Edit: Me and my late best friend wanted to test how far my Wave Birds signal could go. He had his Gamecube setup in his dads camper, and he told me to keep going, and keep going, and keep going. I eventually reached close to maybe 200+ feet from his dads camper, to the point I was almost falling into a river. That might be overstating a bit, but I did go pretty far.

      "I lost friends because I had the Gamecube. Some even threatened to break into my house and smash it, simply because I had it." Who needs enemies with 'friends' like that?

    • @KRS2000
      @KRS2000 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @dancampbell5717 Yeah. High school was a different time back then.
      Christmas 2001 really brought out the worst in many people that I knew, and they continued being ass bags until we graduated. Those many all had a major shift in personality after that Christmas holiday and became the people I described up above, just because their parents could afford more expensive consoles. Thankfully, I haven't spoken to many of them in over 2 decades.
      I had enemies who didn't transform and treat me worse than garbage because I had a Gamecube. Hell, some of them actually treated me with a bit more respect (and hearing through the grapevine that they had Gamecubes as well 😁).

      Little did your “friends” know that the GameCube has had a grand library compared to it’s predecessor and that games have now become ridiculously expensive to obtain.

    • @KRS2000
      @KRS2000 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @crazedlunatic43 Darn skippy.
      There were quite a few Gamecube games that I tried looking for during the early days of the Wii, and even then, they became either impossible to find or still fairly pricey.
      If Gamecube doesn't get added to Switch, then hopefully, it will see life in the next console after the Switch. Or (and this idea may suck), all of the greatest Gamecube games get remastered for the Switch. I know there's quite a few I would like to play again.

    I still remember seeing one of these pre-launch in a Curries (UK electrical store) a couple of weeks before you could buy them and being completely BLOWN AWAY by the graphics!!
    I can't remember what basketball game was running a demo at the time but I had never seen SOOO much detail on a games console in my life.
    I got right up close to the screen and could see someone walking up and down the seating isles selling hotdogs, people getting up to go to the toilets and even the coaches of teams were doing different things as well.

    You, like ALL gaming youtube channels forget. DVDs were made by Toshiba and Sony. therefore, you have to pay royalties every disc you make. Nintendo didn't want to give their rival any money. Hence Sega and Microsoft didn't do the same. What Nintendo messed up on a monumental scale was the failure to take advantage of their network and broadband adaptor.

    The great thing about the Gamecube to me was, that it wasn‘t really popular in Germany compared to the PS2.
    Therefore, larger supermarkets regularly sold great games for just €20-€30. Like Splinter Cell PT/CT, Beyond Good & Evil, Resident Evil CV, Metal Gear Solid TS, Aggressive Inline, 007, Beach Spikers, Time Splitters, Tomb Raider, Rogue Squadron…
    The first console i could afford to own more than 15 games for.
    Superb system with some outstanding titles that i still enjoy playing on my emulation handheld…
