It's a problem they have mostly corrected with the Switch where they create their own ecosystem, but in a way that is responsive to fans and with a big catalogue and variety of games. I grew up on team Playstation, but the GameCube has always been a favorite of mine. I didn't know until years later that the GameCube didn't really do all that well. It's a shame, because I consider the GC era a golden age of Nintendo first-party games.
I grew up with the GameCube and had no clue why games were deciding to skip it until I got older and learned that it did WAY worse than the PS2. In my mind though I got to play Luigi's Mansion, Mario Party, Mario Kart, Sunshine and Melee so I really didn't care haha.
I was just about out of high school when the Gamecube hit the market and was absolutely the kind of gamer they were failing to sell to with most of their software focus. My friends and I enjoyed Smash Bros. Melee but other than that, we mainly had Gamecubes to play the port of Phantasy Star Online on it which we were already playing before on the Dreamcast when it came out there. I gave Super Mario Sunshine a shot but I lasted about 45 minutes and took it back to Electronics Boutique to exchange it for GTA3 because I also had a PS2. I think now looking back, I was disappointed with Nintendo because I had started on their games on the NES, and they weren't "growing up" with me which is kind of a given in your late teens/early-20s when you crave "edgy adult" content. But now all these years later, I better recognize why they do what they do, I see the younger audiences now and the kind of joy they get out of Nintendo's modern games and that made me reflect with how I felt as a kid playing their games for the first time. Every Mario game is somebody's first Mario game and it's something we can all relate to regardless of age.
It's kind of nice to see how relatively powerful the GameCube was, when compared with its contemporaries, not only because it was my console of choice for that generation, following the death of the Dreamcast, but also because I personally noticed that the system's graphics often looked better than competing titles/ports of the same game. It wasn't even like a "my choice is inherently better" console wars kind of perspective. It's just something I naturally noticed from having experienced all three systems from hanging out with different friends.
The Gamecube era is one of personal favorite eras of Nintendo. This era had some of the most creative and wacky Nintendo games like Pikmin 1 & 2, Luigi's Mansion and the Wind Waker. Nintendo weren't afraid to take risks during this era and make games that truly felt distinct like Mario Kart Double Dash. Despite selling worse than the PS2 and the XBOX I feel like the Gamecube left a stronger impact on those who grew up with it.
Gamecube was a odd little thing. Its render ability was pretty darn good. Its why you see games like like RE4 run well and PS2 version struggle with ingame cut scenes at times.granted it was made for the GC in mind but still interesting
I had a Gamecube in my early teens. It was super frustrating seeing what to me were obvious errors in judgement. The small discs and low capacity memory cards that couldn't hold as much data, controllers with fewer buttons and vibration motors than the competition, no DVD playback, making purple the primary color, releasing a modem and broadband adapter... but no actual online support. But I made my choice and parents weren't going to get another console so that was that. Even now, looking back a lot of those limitations seem so deliberate
I love all these systems but I cannot deny how many hours I’ve put into my Switch. I think it easily passes every other video game console I’ve ever had… which is strange since I’m an adult now (I technically was when the GC came out but entering college isn’t exactly “adult” adult). Because of how much I’ve played the Switch, it had to become one of my top 3 systems, doesn’t it?
@@jbbrolicI think a lot of PS1 games also aged poorly. The ones that didn’t were basically nice versions of 16 bit games. But try and go back to racers on the PS1. They are straight trash.
@@leeartlee915 Not to me, I love and still play Gran Turismo 2 on the PS1. It is my favorite racing game next to the Mario Kart series. It was so amazing the big selection of cars more than any racing game I have ever seen even to this day. Plus the graphics on the game really pushed the PS1 to its limit. Also had an amazing soundtrack.
My favorite video game console ever, it brought a lot of great times for me when I was 8 to 10 years old! I played so much Star Fox Adventures, Super Mario Sunshine, Mario Kart: Double Dash, Sonic Heroes, Wario World, Super Smash Bros Melee, Kirby Air Ride, Custom Robo and Pokemon Colosseum! My biggest regret from my childhood though was getting rid of my Gamecube for a Playstation 2, I only did that because I was desperate to play Grand Theft Auto. But, I missed Mario so much. Thankfully though, I got a Wii in 2006 and I was able to play those games again ASAP. Backwards compatibility is a blessing sometimes.
I was never a "GameCube" or "PS2" guy even though I owned a PS2 first - I was always just a gamer and I played my friends gamecube relentlessly every weekend until I finally got mine.
GC was the last of the generation that I purchased. It became my 2nd favorite behind the Xbox. Loved the multiplats on it. Never have been big into Nintendo ips. But had alot of fun with the GC. Perfect system to take to friends houses and play Madden or NBA/NFL Street or THPS. Move to today, and it has the best emulation of the generation imo. Dolphin is excellent and so easy to use.
Really good run-through! I understood the Rare buyout slightly differently though, I thought they tried to sell to Nintendo but were turned down. On the GC vs Playstation et al, Sony blew the market open. They sold to non-gamers. I'd wager a good proportion of their sales were to people looking for a cheap DVD player and got the option to play games along with it. Wife asks what they've bought, they can say it plays movies. There was still stigma at the time around playing video games. Nintendo could never have made that play. Sony was a known "adult" brand. Nintendo made toys for kids. It wouldn't have worked. The best they could have hoped for out of that generation was a console that sold well to existing gamers. Which they kind of achieved. That generation was also the real beginning of games taking years and years to make though. It's easy to forget that only 5-10 years earlier, games were being made by developers in the single digits in months. Not hundreds of developers over years. It caught Nintendo cold, especially without Rare and with weak 3rd party relationships to plug the gaps. There were massive amd frequent game droughts. You could own the GC and another console as a gamer. It was difficult to sustain your time with the GC alone. With better 3rd and 2nd party support, the GC would have sold closer to 40-50 million units, no doubt. It wouldnt have dented the PS2 numbers much, again because they were playing in a different market, but it would have meant the GC was a very successful video game machine. As it was, it just ended up as a brilliant console with a handful of the best games of all time, a whole host of missed potential, and my favourite of all time.
@@ЕгоркаКорабль I have to wonder how much adding DVD functions to the Wii would have added to the cost of the device. The player was capable, did Nintendo opt not to pay for licences or for a software player?
@@ЕгоркаКорабль Absolutely. I looked it up the cost Per device (Wii) would have been about $2. For Nintendo, excluding DVD playback saved them $202 Million dollars. If the software was also shipped on a standard DVD they'd have had to pay for each disk sale as well. I'd say that was a quarter billion dollars well saved.
I got into the GameCube late, summer of 2005. I bought one at my local Toys R Us (RIP) for $99. Came with Super Monkey Ball 1&2, a controller, and a memory card. I still believe that is the best gaming deal I've ever had.
It's a shame that their is such an aura of gloom to the life of the GameCube as it was such a neat system with a stellar line-up of games. A fascinating tour of the history of this console with some particularly interesting insight with the stuff covered in the 'The Dolphin Needs Flippers' being mostly new to me. The many comparisons of both tech and employee count against it's competitors was also informative and well presented.
I think in recent years the perception has turned around to be much more positive. I'm glad there was something new for you to enjoy! And in reality I thought that the comparison would help paint a picture as to why Nintendo has made certain decisions, like not using DVD with the GameCube. Glad you enjoyed it!
@@VideoGameDocs I think a Gamecube Mini would easily outsell a PS2 Mini for the following reasons: - Being able to play DVD's would no longer be a factor - The best PS2 games are mostly third party which would be expensive to license for Sony - These mini consoles only hold a limited number of games, so the PS2's much bigger library would be a non-factor - Nintendo's games have aged much better than any other game from that generation. Just imagine how many people would buy it to play SSBM in HD and maybe even added online play.
@@VideoGameDocs Nintendo didn't have their own semi conductor factories like Sony did at that time. So it would've been more expensive for Nintendo(much like how it was with Microsoft as they were losing over $220 off of each Xbox console sold at that time; hence why they lost over $7-billion that generation) because of expensive royalties off of each disc drive sold within each said system sold. So if DVD was the future, it was the future only for Sony as they had more resources than Nintendo did at that time.
I think something that would've been interesting/helpful when rattling off various numbers over and over again would be to show EXAMPLES of those instead of just dropping numbers. None of those numbers mean anything without an example. Few to no one knows what 600k polygons looks like vs 2 million.
I bought the GameCube at launch(I'm 50 today so I was already a working adult at the time) and it was a real internal struggle for me whether to buy the GameCube or Xbox, but in the end I did not regret my decision because I loved that little cube! Even the launch games I was really impressed by and just the overall design and feel of the device, down to the elegant splash screen loading. It's a beautiful console and even though I also had a PS2, whenever there was a GameCube version of a 3rd party title I was interested in(like a Prince of Persia game or Beyond Good and Evil), I always opted to buy the GC version of it just for the cool factor of playing it on that device instead.
I may have started with the n64, but the gamecube I have so many memories from. It's when I was a middle schooler, moved to a new place, making new friends and playing coop games on said gamecube. Animal Crossing, Gotcha force, paper mario, Phantasy Star, smash bros, and on and on. So MANY great games I loved. Yes Playstation had more games but so many gamecube games were just so good.
The Game cube controller became my favorite controller. The large central button, surrounded but the supporting buttons was good design. I liked the shoulder buttons as well, the trigger feel was an interesting addition. Lots of smash bros on the game cube. I enjoyed this console.
The GameCube was my first gifted video game system for X-Mas 2003 (I Still Own It, in all its Platinum Glory)... but it would be quickly replaced by the graphically superior Xbox (which like the GameCube I still own my childhood console) multiplatform games simply looked better on it although it's a bit odd that I got a 2002 model in the Summer of 2004 (in hindshight I probably bought it used or open box, at that point I saved for well over a year towards it). I still like the GameCube for compilations (Namco Museum, Sonic Gems and Mega Collection ECT.) and of course for its original IP. Tne games I do regret selling when I was younger is Mario Strikers, Mario Kart Double Dash and Super Monkey Ball... despite not playing them in a very long time I know for a fact that these are some of the best games Nintendo has ever created.
The Gamecube was my first home console and my intro to Nintendo and gaming (along with my Gameboy Advance( at the age of 7. I loved the edgy early 2000s aesthetic it had. The purple cube was so fucking cool to me, with it's dark and shiny menu. Melee, Kirby Air Ride and Mario Kart DD had a similar aesthetic and I miss that chill vibe so much. Times were simpler and I don't just say that from nostalgia. I love the Switch but the Gamecube was the last true home console just made for games in in a sense, that is missed. So many memories. :') Love you forever, little purple lunchbox!
I was a ps2 kid but my best friend had a gamecube. We would play a higher variety of games at my house but the mainstays at his house like smash, Mario party 4 and 5, and warioware, we would play over and over. I didn’t get to experience the gamecube library until my family got a Wii. It sucked cuz I had to share it but after a few months, no one touched the things and I got to experience games I still love to this day like wind waker, Metroid prime, viewtiful Joe, and the very slept on Kirby air ride
The GameCube was an awesome system. It instantly became more niche bc it wasn't as popular as PS2 or Xbox, and it had all the Nintendo IP stuff, which lent it a devoted cult following. At the time, no one really realized how good the GameCube games were, myself included. I just thought it was the inevitable progression, refinement, and followup to the type of gameplay the Nintendo 64 was doing. I didn't appreciate just what a refinement it was. It perfected N64 type gameplay like the SNES did for the NES
The GameCube is like the Harry Truman of game consoles. Not as popular/living up to expectations when it was an active console (especially the later part) but after it was "retired" in 2007, over time it grew to me more and more respected and popular. Just like how Truman was viewed during his Presidency, leaving the White House with among the lowest approval ratings...and how over time he grew to be better viewed as far as his place in history goes. If all of this makes sense.
There are many small reasons for its failure but the main reason in my opinion is Sonys DVD compatibility. The second reason was one that nobody could see at that time but gamers matured at a younger age. Most gamers would rather play GTA3 than Pickman. So Nintendo would go on the offense creating and licensing games like eternal darkness and resident evil remakes but it was too late. They even tried new markings appealing to that older audience. They lost this round but somehow managed to win the next. This goes to show you that you can never predict what people want or can afford. The small family Wii would beat out the big bad PS3 and the flawed 360.
The GameCube wasn’t a finical disaster, but it wasn’t as popular as the PS2 or GameBoy Advance. I would argue that the GameCube was the last good Nintendo console before they started favouring weaker specs that have a specific gimmick as a selling point.
I agree 100%, the game cube blew me away when I finally got one and a copy of the resident evil remake shortly after that game released!! I got the purple game cube (as in my mind it was the original) that came with Mario sunshine and I got an extra controller, memory card and a copy of resident evil and went home and was absolutely shot at just how good the game played and looked?! As well as how comfortable the controller was, despite my thoughts to the contrary!! Everything about it was awesome and it felt special?
There is no argument, it is the truth. It all goes under the Miyamoto motto "INNOVATE OR DIE." I would love a funny little nintendo box that has horsepower half a gen behind current gen each time the other 2 guys bring out their updated not-pc machines. I have gotten a ton of miles out of my switch, but it's the only nintendo console I have ever had to buy a second one of, in additional to multiple controllers, because of its low quality.
It does suck that Nintendo doesn't compete with the other guys… as the Wii was noticeably weaker than the competition… in a way where it was incredibly obvious when you looked at the Wii's games compared to its competition. But I disagree that this was their "last good console." I'd argue that this doesn't really matter as much anymore. We're at the point where each new jump in graphical power with each generation has given us diminishing returns. If the rumors are true that the Switch 2 will have PS4-esque visuals… I doubt most would notice the difference between the Switch 2 and the other current-gen consoles. Especially with things like DLSS among other things…
27:30-27:35 was the main reason Nintendo had to 'drop out' of competing against Sony and Microsoft during the 7th generation. They didn't have a choice back then; it was the only way for Nintendo to survive as both a gaming company and a console manufacturer. And people out there sadly still don't get that message!
@@G.L.999 you’re right! But even back then I’m not sure Nintendo was a David. Hell Sony wasn’t too hot outside PlayStation and monitors/tv’s. They are even worse now. Phones are basically gone. I’m 48 years old now. So I was old enough when the Cube came out to buy all my own shit. I had a PS2 and the Cube. FZero GX and Metroid Prime were light years ahead of their time. To me those two games were just as good if not better than all the games I had on the PS2. The cube was awesome too bad it did not get more 3rd party games. I was a Tekken, Final Fantasy and Resident Evil playing fool.
@ActionGamerAaron no I didn’t forget those games. But when Metroid Prime came out I got so hooked on it I did not bother with playing re4 till ps2 and I did own the remake of re1 And played the shit out of it. Good times 👍
@ActionGamerAaronRE 2 and 3 also were ported to the GC; so for a time it was the only place you play the entire series excluding the Outbreak and Survivor, and the GBC game. It had 6 RE games.
I think the GameCube not supporting dvd 📀 playback was a major mistake by Nintendo. Look at the sales figures of the GameCube (38.4 million) versus the PS2 (155.8 million) and DVD was the difference.
The love for the GameCube is interesting to me. I enjoyed nes ,SNES and then loved the N64...then I got a game cube and thought it looked aweful like a kids toy compared to the PS2. I got it anyway because I loved Nintendo games. Mario Sunshine to me lacked the magic of Mario 64, I was disappointed by wind waker (I actually came to love it later on wiiu) and Mario kart double dash was the only game I thought was better than the N64 Version. I ended up selling it for a PS2.
I love the GC. Mario Party 7 is the best MP game...and Mario Kart Double Dash is still a blast! ➕️ Plus, the GC has one of the best, if not THE best controllers!
Aw the GC. Crazy optimized little lunchbox just for Nintendo as always. Only thing I truly technically dislike about it is how little fast RAM it has and the “narrow” SIMD capabilities of the PPC750 CPU. The CPU SIMD capabilities never seemed to hold it back against the PS2 or Xbox though…….
As a NES , SNES, Gameboy and N64 owner I never considered getting the Cube, I knew the Small Disc idea was poor, bad controller design and lack of graphics kept it off my radar. N64 was the Last Nintendo Product purchased. I jumped to both PS and Xbox, ironically enough I still have all my Nintendos except the Gameboy and have went through a few PS and Xbox consoles 😂
I'm going to have to buy a Gamecube again since Nintendo refuses to give us Windwaker for the Switch. That is one game i never got to play on my Gamecube.
@@kebby8251 Oh right, maybe not? The early models of the Wii are 100% GameCube game compatible if you're looking to play the original Gamecube release other wise?
27:54 to be fair the comparison of all 3 companies based on their number of employees is very very bad due to the fact that Microsoft and Sony have a lot of other divisions than just their gaming division. It’s like talking engine size with cars and so you compare wheel diameter. The two aren’t correlated. (Microsoft’s gaming divisions employ 22,000 people, Sony Interactive Entertainment has 12,700, and Nintendo has 7,724) they are still smaller but the difference isn’t as massive as you suggest. The company is solely focused on video games, where the others have other divisions focused on things that aren’t gaming.
Now it's sinking your wallet😂. Man the idiots paying for GC games. So stupid. You can get a GC Reader for the same cost of 4 games. Use the money to get you a HDMI board. Man norms are so STUPID.
@@therealjaystone2344 The Wii U was bad because of marketing, but at least they were coming off their most successful system of all time right before it. The N64 got destroyed by the PS1, and the Gamecube did even worse against the Xbox and PS2.
Nintendo suffers from an affliction where they are such a small company they feel the need to resell you the same game over and over with each platform. And they love to sue anyone who is trying to preserve their old library.
And get Nintendo continues to be the most innovative and in reality Nintendo doesn’t really need to release anything else and I never thought I would be defending Nintendo all these years later because at the time of the GameCube I didn’t really like Nintendo outside of the handheld anymore, but for people to say Nintendo makes the same games over and over again yes they do but at the end of the day they bring creative ideas and innovations to keep these games freshwhile competition continues to stagnate with the same interactive movies masquerading as video games with the same long boring cut scenes not to mention the focus on one of the biggest scams of the current error of gaming live service games
Well if the games in question are made commercially available on subsequent platforms, then Nintendo are, by definition, preserving the games. So what are you saying, do they sue themselves? That doesn’t quite sound right. Perhaps there’s a key piece of information you are privy to and deliberately leaving out of this narrative. Come on, do elaborate.
Zelda 128? It was just Zelda. The concept that never happened. 128 was only on the Mario title as a tech demo, as it was an achievement at the time to have 128 independent npcs on screen at once. The tech would later be used to create Pikmin.
I think one should take some skepticism on the comment on the company size. I think the fairer comparison would be against the Xbox and PlayStation divisions respectively, given that Nintendo is strictly games and Microsoft makes software, operating systems, a leader in cloud computing, and Sony has everything from cameras, televisions, a movie studio, a record label, high fidelity and consumer grade stereo equipment and basically anything you could want on a consumer electronic side. While I get what they could potentially have more resources to throw at problems, they would also have more problems across the board being in so many arenas.
At @15:35 you mention that the GameCube was the first Nintendo console to launch without a Mario game. This is not true. The Famicon released in Japan without a Mario game.
It's funny to me how Nintendo America tried really hard with their advertising to appeal to teens and young adults with cool, weird, and sometimes slightly edgy presentation... then they showed the console. I love how it looks but even I can't deny that the color combined with the proportions and the handle just make it look silly. If Nintendo REALLY wanted to capture that demographic, they should have taken a page out of the SEGA Saturn's book and used a different shell color in the west, and then maybe removed the handle. The later released Jet Black, Platinum Silver, and Pearl White colors would have much better sold the system to the edgy youth of 2001-2006

I couldn’t agree more
Eternal darkness is a GameCube gem I highly recommend, it got passed over in sales compared to how good it is and its high review ratings
@@lightfeather9953yes!!!!
Maybe the Gamecube were the friends we made along the way
Gamecube was a odd little thing. Its render ability was pretty darn good. Its why you see games like like RE4 run well and PS2 version struggle with ingame cut scenes at times.granted it was made for the GC in mind but still interesting
Excellent video, I love the Gamecube era of Nintendo.
GameCube was such a fun time of my life
I had a Gamecube in my early teens.
The Game cube is probably my 3rd favorite Nintendo system, only 3rd to NES and SNES.
I like SNES and GameCube. I don't think N64 aged well. Way more PlayStation games I can still enjoy.
@@jamesofficial6829 Welp of course there will be exceptions but I would still wager a guess that GT1 is not often revisited.

Great video! I love the custom Luigi paint job!
Thanks! I did it in High School and looking at it now it has some rough edges lol
👏... This was a well made video especially when you broke down all the specs and numbers I never know the history on the

The mini discs was an interesting choice, but what’s really crazy to me is that even the Wii didn’t play DVDs 🤷♂️
First revisions of wii actually CAN play dvds. You can do it by using homebrew
@@ЕгоркаКорабль I have to wonder how much adding DVD functions to the Wii would have added to the cost of the device. The player was capable, did Nintendo opt not to pay for licences or for a software player?
@@EddieSlabb i think it was a license problem
@@ЕгоркаКорабль Absolutely. I looked it up the cost Per device (Wii) would have been about $2. For Nintendo, excluding DVD playback saved them $202 Million dollars. If the software was also shipped on a standard DVD they'd have had to pay for each disk sale as well. I'd say that was a quarter billion dollars well saved.
Thankfully Nintendo learned their lesson and always used the best available format for their games after this
the way a gamecube disc pops into the drive is so satisfying
this was the 1 system nintendo went all out on. it was also the last system they went all out on.
How did you come to that conclusion?
@@PrinceMarcusWilliamProbably because it was the last system that competed with Sony and Microsoft in a technical aspect.

@@VideoGameDocs I think a Gamecube Mini would easily outsell a PS2 Mini for the following reasons:
- Being able to play DVD's would no longer be a factor
- The best PS2 games are mostly third party which would be expensive to license for Sony
- These mini consoles only hold a limited number of games, so the PS2's much bigger library would be a non-factor
- Nintendo's games have aged much better than any other game from that generation.
I think this is not that type of video, you are looking for a Digital Foundry type of video
Things would’ve been different if the GC used the dvd.

Still one of my favorite systems and I’ve had my system since 2002 👍
I bought the GameCube at launch(I'm 50 today so I was already a working adult at the time) and it was a real internal struggle for me whether to buy the GameCube or Xbox, but in the end I did not regret my decision because I loved that little cube!
GameCube will always be my favorite home console. 💖
The PS2 was not by far superior to the Dreamcast it had a DVD player.

Man I loved my GameCube i waited in line the day it came out to snag one for Christmas

I loved myGamecube from day 1. Pikmin, Windwaker, FZero GX, etc. so many great console exclusives.
I don't think you mentioned it but there was also a pearl white GameCube in Europe that shipped with Mario Smash Football in Europe.
If Nintendo had used standard DVD format for GameCube games, they could have really been onto something
Great video, what is the music in the beggining ?
The intro music is "A Heart Made of Pixels" by Christoffer Moe Ditlevsen. Hope this helps!
I feel like people don't talk about Double Dash enough. Still my favourite Mario Kart to this day.
R.I.P My Melee machine.
The GameCube wasn’t a finical disaster, but it wasn’t as popular as the PS2 or GameBoy Advance. I would argue that the GameCube was the last good Nintendo console before they started favouring weaker specs that have a specific gimmick as a selling point.
I agree, and Nintendo still turned a profit from the GameCube.
But I disagree that this was their "last good console."
I'd argue that this doesn't really matter as much anymore.
You act like that’s some hot take. It’s not at all. You basically sound like most Nintendo followers.

27:30-27:35 was the main reason Nintendo had to 'drop out' of competing against Sony and Microsoft during the 7th generation.
It was a solid console for 4 player action
I think the GameCube not supporting dvd 📀 playback was a major mistake by Nintendo. Look at the sales figures of the GameCube (38.4 million) versus the PS2 (155.8 million) and DVD was the difference.
GameCube is still Nintendo's best console to this day. This was their peak.
FZero GX is way better than DX.
You missed out bigly.

Dreamcast 1998 in Japan *********
I think one should take some skepticism on the comment on the company size. I think the fairer comparison would be against the Xbox and PlayStation divisions respectively, given that Nintendo is strictly games and Microsoft makes software, operating systems, a leader in cloud computing, and Sony has everything from cameras, televisions, a movie studio, a record label, high fidelity and consumer grade stereo equipment and basically anything you could want on a consumer electronic side. While I get what they could potentially have more resources to throw at problems, they would also have more problems across the board being in so many arenas.
Gameboy Advanced?
Best games ever made were one the nintendo gamecube.
At @15:35 you mention that the GameCube was the first Nintendo console to launch without a Mario game. This is not true. The Famicon released in Japan without a Mario game.

It's spherical...SPHERICAL!!!
