Hey guys! This is a really special episode and I'm happy to present it on the official channel with this extended cut. Dad recorded this during a scary time, and Gamecube helped distract us from all the chaos. Have any great Gamecube launch memories? Let me know in the comments. Thanks everyone.
Amazing clip the extended cut is more wholesome idd. GC was such a great console in EU where I'm from it launched around April to May 2002 but be4 that we were graced to witness Luigis Mansion in our local video games store ( the Japanese version) we were blown away by the gfx and gameplay LM wasn't Mario 64 but it certainly had its own unique powerful formula going on for it and at that time it was just amazing to see the leaps in visuals every new system was light years ahead..Later we bought the Pal version of the game when we finally got the system. Amazing console worth every penny. Your Dad was amazing!
I’f your dad is still with us bless his heart. He really loves technology unlike a lot of dads. If he isn’t, I’m sorry you’ve lost such a great father. Thanks too your father and yourself for such great content man.

This video is very notolgic and it feels like going home again. Thank you for sharing these moments with your dad, Tyler. It warms my soul whenever I watch.
GameCube helped my family get distracted from what was going on. We’re a family of first responders from the east coast. Even our local volunteer ambulance got into an accident to assist North NJ on the way due to the attack. Thankfully my dad was not on it. But we got to think of something else for those few moments.
I can’t imagine the fear and uncertainty. So glad he was OK! My Uncle was a few blocks away from the towers when it happened. We didn’t hear from him until 7 pm at night. He had to walk all the way from Lower Manhattan to Queens

I remember saving up and buying a Nintendo Gamecube - I was 17 and had a job that allowed me to save up and get it. It was the first console I bought with my own money and I was so excited with getting it that I forgot to buy a memory card! I had rushed home to play Resident Evil and got pretty far in it. I didn't want to stop playing but I knew that I was getting to a point where I needed to save so that I wouldn't lose my progress. I had to suck it up and run back to the store, my console still running with Jill waiting patiently in a safe room. It was one of my favorite consoles that I still regret trading in many years ago. I wish I still had my GameCube. It was hands down one of the biggest collection of games in my entire library for that generation of consoles. What an exciting time to be alive in those days, and as for 9/11/01 I’ll never forget that morning sitting in class and the teacher next door running into my home room to warn everybody about what was on the news. There was no teaching that whole entire day, and luckily my gameboy advance came in handy with advance wars. Always love the content Tyler. These videos take so many of us back in time with these visual capsules you share.
I played so many Sonic games on the GameCube when I was a kid. Your father's a national treasure and I wanna be like him when I have a family of my own.
Doesn't seem that long ago really. I bought a GameCube in 2002 because they said they were going to remake all the resident evils for it. They only remade the first one... GC library was pretty boring.
I know it's been said a trillion times but as someone who's real dad was never around I am constantly jealous of the relationship you and your dad had. Gaming together and documenting almost all of it is just amazing. Maybe I shouldn't say jealousy because I am truly happy you got to experience it. Just wish it could have been my dad! This may get my Nintendo fan card revoked but I've never actually played Luigi's mansion.. I was a bit younger than you at the time (just turned 11) and had gotten a PS2 that year and was well into becoming a huge Sony fan. I still loved Nintendo I just didn't play GameCube until my stepdad got one so he could play Metroid Prime. We never really gamed together but I did eventually play a few games like Mario Kart and Wind Waker/Twilight Princess when it came out (much prefer it to the Wii version). Never actually played Mario Sunshine, either. It was a weird time in my life lol. Sometimes it's a bit painful for me watching how close you and your dad were but that's just the immaturity and jealousy coming out because I wanted that so badly with my dad. I quickly get over it and get happy because you deserved it man. And your dad was just an awesome guy. Thanks for the nostalgia trips. Hope all is well.
I'm always amazed with how much footage this channel preserved. These are personal family memories caught on tape, but it also captures important moments in life that SO MANY people can relate to and lived through in their own way. Love it
A friend came over one afternoon to play some video games with his kids in the summer of 2001. With me being a PlayStation and Xbox gamer I’d never seen the GameCube or it’s games before. My friend had just picked one up with some games and brought it over to try out. I was blown away!! The remake of Resident Evil and Luigis Mansion made it a system getter for me!
Wow your Dad invented the Unboxing Videos we see every where today. Amazing!! I remember getting my son his gamecube for Christmas and playing games with him on this amazing console. Thanks for making these videos always takes me back to my times with these old consoles to.
Thata not true, every father worldwide filmed their kids unboxing gifts(mine did back in the day too & my home videos are older than this one)these are facts.
Man, your dad is cool 🥲 Thanks for these videos! I was a sophomore in high school and my mom took me to a midnight launch where I got Super Monkey Ball with my indigo console. My parents let me have it as an early x-mas present. I still play the GCN on a regular basis ❤
I appreciate videos like these. They help recapture that moment of fleeting nostalgia. A chance to relive that moment in our childhood/adolescence that we yearned to re-see. Thank you for these.
I do believe this was my favorite generation of consoles. Such an exciting time. I graduated HS in 2001, and was going to College/Dorm Room in the fall of 2001. I was in my dorm for 9-11. Everything was cancelled on campus for 2-3 days. I had a PS2 first, XBOX 2nd, and a GameCube last. I've always found myself leaning towards the "underdog" when it comes to consoles. The PS2 was fantastic for the first 2-3 yrs. Then I got into the XBOX, which by 2002/3 had really turned it up. It looked so much better than anything else, and XBOX Live was just the coolest thing (I wish I could relive those early XBOX Live lobbies playing PGR2, Rainbow6, etc.) I finally got a GC in 2003 or so, and it quickly became my 3rd party machine. I loved it. It was right in the middle of the PS and XBOX in terms of power/graphics. The GameCube controller is STILL my favorite controller of all time. It doesn't look like it would be good at all, but it simply melts in my hands.
My first video game console was a GameCube, got it way back in 2nd grade. Still have the same one to this day, and I will always cherish the amazing experiences I have had with it over the years. Still is one of the best consoles ever made!
GameCube launch was exactly half my life ago. Really brings me back to see this. Your dad is awesome for capturing all these memories and you're just as awesome for opening up and sharing them with us. Magical.
I got so addicted to this TH-cam channel. You guys are so awesome for archiving this kind of history. It really took me back to the day I first saw a GameCube in my home.
Tyler, another great video! Even during a dark period of global history, times like this brought a sense of calm and normal to our households. I also was a sophomore like you when the 9/11 happened, turning our worlds upside-down. The 6th generation of consoles brought me a needed distraction and sense of happiness. Thank you!
Put your hands together for all the awesome dads. This brought tears to my eyes reminding me of my dad who also used to bring me the latest consoles from overseas.
Bro, your videos are like a time machine. I remember the Gamecube launch. I can feel it like it was yesterday. I can't believe it's been 21 years. OMG.
Only a week and a half after that horrible day, I was 17 and just started high school and saw it all unfold. Glad we got Xbox and GC a few months after, really helped me personally. Never forget the north tower antenna falling and collapsing ☹️ Wish I had the relationship and video games w my mom or dad, still remember my mom taking me to Fedco and target and getting snes and n64 boxes out from behind the glass and getting rung up. 90s-mid 2ks games were unmatched.
TYLER!!!!! I couldn't comment on your video for your daughters top 8, but I just wanted you to know. I LOVE YOU! I think you put the most heartfelt video game shows out there! Your nostalgia is our nostalgia! thank you!
Im going through every one of your videos. Just watching the interaction between you and your dad makes me tear up. My step dad was always... I mean ALWAYS away on business and never interacted with me. I always went to friends houses and saw most of the kids have a close relationship with their parents. I always wondered what that felt like. I know ive always wanted it. But watching you and your dad bond over video games warms my heart. Im almost reliving my childhood watching these. Thank you dude! I hope you truly realize just how much you are doing for everyone, especially us 30 somethings who never had relationships with our pops.
I bought a black one at the european launch with Rogue Leader 2, and my goodness I played that game so much! I neglected the GC a lot that generation (was mostly a PC-sweatlord during those years), it mostly functioned as a Star Wars and Resident Evil console for me. In the later years I've bough a lot of games for the system though!
Great memories! Gamecube was the first console evolution i got to see. The jump from the n64 to something like smash bros melee felt mindblowing to me: graphics, sound, faster gameplay and framerate,...And you actually got to live the whole snes and n64 eras before, so this must've been even more special seeing all these recognizable characters with more detailed looks
Oh man, this hit me really hard, I was tearing up pretty bad by the end of it. I have a lot of similar memories from this era, Luigi's Mansion was one of the few modern games my mom ever played. Your dad seems amazing.
I remember playing the GameCube with my cousin at our grandma’s after we finished school playing smash bros, and now I’m a dad playing on a Nintendo switch with my little girl. It never leaves you gaming, you can’t beat that feeling of getting a new console. Great video 👍
I love how clear your footage is! And how much time you guys spent really appreciating and discussing the tech. My personal Gamecube story: I waited in line at a KMart in Sacramento in the morning and walked away pretty quickly with the system and Rogue Squadron II. My parents even let me stay home from school for the day 😁I was blown away by that game.
This vid brought up many emotions for me. Firstly, i adore your dad. He seemed like a genuine, loving, sensitive, fun guy and I'm so sorry you lost him too soon. My father died when i was 13 in 1995, so i know what it's like to lose a wonderful dad. Watching your dad interact with you helps me to imagine what life might've been like if he hadn't died. Secondly, I'd completely forgotten that the GC was released around the time of 9/11. That churned my stomach. It's one of those moments you'll always remember. I was 19 and getting ready for work that day. It was so surreal. I live on the west coast, but i sobbed my eyes out when all the names of the deceased were read on TV. Thirdly, seeing the joy on your face as you first opened the contents and played on the cube reminded me of how excited my sister and I were that Xmas when mom got us the system from Costco. I still have it, actually, and all the games we got. :) Such an amazing console. Thank you for sharing these hone videos with us. They felt so warm and homely. ❤
Love that your dad caught all these moments on camera and then the videos that you went on to make from the footage are amazing, the nostalgia factor is off the scale, growing up a gamer was the best you definitely had to be there before the days of online gaming
I actually got tears in my eyes from this video thinking about the Christmas I got my GameCube. I was so dang happy. My favorite Christmas of all time hands down.
Awesome memory ty for sharing Tyler, I remember 9/11 very vividly but the rest of the year I draw a real blank, everything seemed to be about the attack. I dont even remember the Gamecube launch at all.
Powerful video, man. Yes, I remember the feeling at that time, so well. It felt so dark, everywhere you turned. Even games were hard to get into, at least for me, personally. There just seemed like so much fear and hopelessness in everyday life. But sometimes a game, or a movie, or even a good music album could still just transport you from all the pain and fear and connect with your soul.
When I was 19 in 2001, I was at an Army PX with a man who WOULD HAVE been my father-in-law. He was looking at hunting and fishing gear, and I was going on about the Gamecubes that were in stock. He didn't like me.
This is so cool to see from a younger persceptive. My first game system was in 2000/2001 with the n64 at 5. My childhood systems were the Gamecube and Wii. WiI U was my sendoff from high school. You were the first generation of nintendo kids
GameCube was my first ever console, and I still have it to this day. Works like the day I got it. I owe my love for video games to this console and the GBA.
Hey Tyler! Meeting you at Retropalooza was such a blast! Thanks for being so kind and approachable. Your videos have brought so much joy to my life these past few years. You've helped me reconnect with a lot of special family memories. Keep up the amazing work. Your dad is a legend. God bless brother!
Great video, I love how your dad always comes across as just getting pure enjoyment out of watching you discover the new consoles/games and worlds they opened up for you. How amazing that he took all the videos for you and us to enjoy! Always enjoy your videos
I was lucky enough to visit Japan exactly after the Wii came out there before it came to the west and there was something magical about playing it before I knew others in Europe or North America could. Thanks for triggering this memory for me!
This was so great! Brings back memories of my older brother getting the Gamecube from my Dad the day it came out, and then booting up Luigi's Mansion when they got back. Such simpler times!
n64 was brilliant, the days of spending time with friends going out and then going to 1 persons house with controllers goldeneye and other multiplayer games...the joy
@retrolife I just commented about your dad being apart a mini doc on how he become such a tech guy, then I started reading the comments and noticed how many other views comments about your pops. Love these vids wish my dad was into it like I was
Me and my lil bros first console was the Ps1 but our second was the gamecube, i had never played Nintendo growing up but my older cousins would always be playing Dreamcast, Super Nintendo and N64 i love the channel dude ive literally binged like exery video this week, amazing memories and what a great time youve had with your dad and family. Lucky to have it all on tape too thats wild
Great video. Thanks for sharing this with us, American history and gaming history. I didn't get my GameCube around launch time. I got my Platinum Edition Nintendo GameCube bundled with Super Smash Bros Melee and I bought WWF WrestleMania X8 in 2005. It was my console I bought with my own $ that I worked for. I will never get rid of it. Nintendo 64 and GameCube are my favorite consoles. My best friend got the Jet Black GameCube and WWF WrestleMania X8. I have fond memories with that game. At the time we were wrestling fan when it was great the Attitude and Ruthless Aggression Era.
Bro it’s so dope your dad captured all these pure, wholesome and nostalgic moments! I grew up with the GameCube and I just recently bought one so had to check out a vintage unboxing. Just subscribed. 🙏🏽
We're glad Nintendo exist, for creating the most nostalgic games we've played in the past when arcades and OTG/Home Videogame Consoles are still a thing.
This makes me miss my Gamecube, it was my personal favorite console, I had found memorys of playing, Super smash bross melee, Mario kart dubble dash, Paper mario the thousand year door, F-zero gx, Batman begins, Super mario sunshine, Star fox adventures, and Zelda wind waker + I got mine bundled with collectors edition.
I got the gamecube on launch as well, I got the purple one, with a couple of games. I never quite got used to that joypad, but man, what an awesome little console!
This was the first gaming anything that I had bought myself. I'd saved birthday and christmas money for like three years and bought the purple GC and a ton of games from the local CompUSA. Man seeing a video from the same year is taking me down memory lane.
In 2001 i remember playing system shok 2 which was released in the year 1999 and i struggled allot in solving puzzles this is the first game that have puzzles that i played

Oh totally. Stay tuned- I’ve got a future video coming in October all about Resident Evil Remake
@@drizztdourden666 where’s your videos?
@@lionheart5329 in vhs tapes, genius,I'm not putting home videos on TH-cam since I don't want strangers looking at personal family tapes.
”Watch it buddy!” Cracks me up every time 😂

Man, your dad is cool 🥲
Thanks for these videos!
Well I think you’re in luck! Because there’s a custom server named Insignia that’s a free replacement to Xbox Live v1. I think you might like it
This video is just wow.
Loved every minute of this video. So real, so natural and so beautiful
My first video game console was a GameCube, got it way back in 2nd grade. Still have the same one to this day, and I will always cherish the amazing experiences I have had with it over the years. Still is one of the best consoles ever made!
The GameCube is probably the most underrated console in history.
Definitely a crazy time to grow up man
What's Fedco?
That nintendo game cube start up theme got me emotional. So many great memories.
Thanks for sharing
I honestly can't thank you enough for unlocking childhood memories I totally forgot about.
I'm glad you guys have so much gold filmed. Not a lot of people back then thought about filming video game related stuff.
Oh man, this hit me really hard, I was tearing up pretty bad by the end of it. I have a lot of similar memories from this era, Luigi's Mansion was one of the few modern games my mom ever played. Your dad seems amazing.
I can’t explain how precious gaming is to me. With this channel, I don’t need to.
That cover of the Nintendo Power from November 2001 will forever remain seared in my brain!
My parents even let me stay home from school for the day 😁I was blown away by that game.
man this made me kinda emotional. used to play gamecube with my dad a bunch as a kid and I'll never forget getting it that Christmas. great video!
Love these extended vids. As a kid I loved Nintendo but never got a Gamecube and missed all the hype. I'm glad you and your dad made these videos ❤️
You dropping these videos "is enough to make a grown man cry" 🤠👍
I actually got tears in my eyes from this video thinking about the Christmas I got my GameCube. I was so dang happy. My favorite Christmas of all time hands down.
Got mine on launch day in November 2001. One of my favorite consoles of all time.
Awesome memory ty for sharing Tyler, I remember 9/11 very vividly but the rest of the year I draw a real blank, everything seemed to be about the attack. I dont even remember the Gamecube launch at all.
This is my favourite My Retro Life video so glad it got an extended cut I really enjoy hearing you and your dad reacting to the mini CDs.
Hey thanks yeah hopefully you were able to pick out the extra bits!
@@MyRetroLife Either way I love the video so it's always a pleasure to watch it again 😊
Wow its incredible you have all these VHS videos of your #1 hobby. Great times. Thanks for the memories.
I just got out of HS when this was shot. I think we all had the same reaction to the Gamecube. Still one of my favorite consoles.
This is so cool to see from a younger persceptive. My first game system was in 2000/2001 with the n64 at 5. My childhood systems were the Gamecube and Wii. WiI U was my sendoff from high school. You were the first generation of nintendo kids
This was an awesome watch. You have an amazing dad
GameCube was my first ever console, and I still have it to this day. Works like the day I got it. I owe my love for video games to this console and the GBA.
Dang. You have a really good dad.
Hey Tyler! Meeting you at Retropalooza was such a blast! Thanks for being so kind and approachable. Your videos have brought so much joy to my life these past few years. You've helped me reconnect with a lot of special family memories. Keep up the amazing work. Your dad is a legend. God bless brother!
since the gamecube was my first system, seeing your initial playthrough of Luigi's Mansion really gives me a warm feeling
That's awesome! You're welcome
dude your dad was one of the great ones i wish i had a dad like that
This was so great! Brings back memories of my older brother getting the Gamecube from my Dad the day it came out, and then booting up Luigi's Mansion when they got back. Such simpler times!
I remember getting the black GameCube for Christmas 2001 with Luigi’s Mansion, Tony Hawk 3 & Star Wars Rogue Squadron 2-what a time to be alive!
your dad is a beast with major bde for getting you guys a console ahead of time
Love this series so much always brings me back
n64 was brilliant, the days of spending time with friends going out and then going to 1 persons house with controllers goldeneye and other multiplayer games...the joy
Thanks for bringing back memories to me of the good old GameCube days.
14:12 Thankfully.... We still had Nintendo!
@retrolife I just commented about your dad being apart a mini doc on how he become such a tech guy, then I started reading the comments and noticed how many other views comments about your pops. Love these vids wish my dad was into it like I was
man I'm always happy when you upload a new video thanks, this is my favorite channel on youtube
Thanks 🙏 Appreciate you
Agreed & brings back great memories with every upload
Me and my lil bros first console was the Ps1 but our second was the gamecube, i had never played Nintendo growing up but my older cousins would always be playing Dreamcast, Super Nintendo and N64 i love the channel dude ive literally binged like exery video this week, amazing memories and what a great time youve had with your dad and family. Lucky to have it all on tape too thats wild
Great video, top notch story telling.
This channel has a gift of capturing nostalgia and a period of time.
9/11 may we never forget. 🇺🇸
Glad you enjoyed it
Your dad is amazing dude. I, too want give my son the same gaming experience that your dad gave you.
At the time we were wrestling fan when it was great the Attitude and Ruthless Aggression Era.
love these videos there a time capsule TO THE GOOD OLD DAYS OF GAMEING R.I.P. TO THOSE WE LOST ON SEP 11 01 9.11😟😟
Bro it’s so dope your dad captured all these pure, wholesome and nostalgic moments! I grew up with the GameCube and I just recently bought one so had to check out a vintage unboxing. Just subscribed. 🙏🏽
We're glad Nintendo exist, for creating the most nostalgic games we've played in the past when arcades and OTG/Home Videogame Consoles are still a thing.
loved that indigo gamecube, still my favorite console design ever
This channel is one of the biggest gems on the Internet
GameCube is definitely in my top 3 video game consoles ever, awesome video!
Probably the 5000th comment of this nature but, your dad is a legend. What a great influence
The GameCube was an amazing console with excellent games! I still remember picking up mine a few months after launch with Star Wars Rogue Leader.
I was a senior in high school when it came out I didn’t get it until graduation. Was a great console, wish I still had mine
Great childhood along with PS2 and Wii
I didn’t get my GameCube til 2005
