In this lesson we’re going to look at the jazz standard ‘Autumn Leaves’.
Autumn Leaves is one of the best-known of all jazz standards and is frequently called at jam sessions so it’s a good idea to learn and memorise these important chord changes.
Usually played in the key of G Minor, the tune follows a 32 measure AABC form and contains both major and minor 251 progressions. The same 251s are repeated throughout which makes the form easy to memorise and fun to play over.
We’re going to start off with some simple two handed voicings so that we understand the chord changes and the harmonic movement through the tune.
We will then create both a slow tempo, ballad arrangement and also an up tempo swing version for the second time through.

@@PianoGroove I would really appreciate any tips on how I can learn the theory behind the harmony used in the advanced voicings section. E.g. why does that g major upper structure work so well over the F dominant chord? How would somebody think to use that here?

Showing a figured bass line gets the fear of what key your in while promoting modulations. Adding a bit more Bach theory would assist your very delightful examples. I’d enjoy a printable version of exactly what you’re actually playing- nice work & please keep it coming.

There is another, simpler, and even easier to memorize way of looking at section A: it is such a great example of 4736251 progression - going down the circle of fifths through all the seven steps of the scale, all perfect fifths except one, one diminished 5th (6-2) has to be used in order to stay within the scale and to limit the progression to just 7 chords instead of 12. Actually, nothing to memorize at all. Just start at 1, then begin playing the melody while going down a fifth each time until you reach 1 again, dominant 7th chord @ 5 - who uses natural minor anyway? (1)4736251 sounds great in minor keys.

Frankly this is one of the best videos I have ever watched in YT. It is useful even for beginners because the information is coming little by little, and the player is not too worried about showing his obvious skills or overwhelm the viewer with his knowledge, he is just interesed in making the concepts understood gradually. This is a really pedagogical lesson. Ty a lot, it was awesome.

I was trained in classical music when much younger (now in my 60's). I love this piece and can already play the 'normal-style' of (full) sheet music, with all the notes. Now, I'm trying to learn to play this lovely piece using these chords (w/your 'VERY high level' of 'modern chord language - yikes!) is really quite daunting. However, I'm trying to follow you - and this jazz version sounds beautiful. Chords seem very advanced. Now, I think I'm just getting stuck and very frustrated. :(

I found it difficult also after playing classical for years. To me it’s a whole different ball game. It helped me a lot when I slowed down the video and try to pick apart the chords he played. This version he played so beautifully. I also love the Beeji Adair Trio Version. It’s similar to this but a bit faster.
